What's the most efficient technique for audience mics that you have used?

We were doing a live recording this one time and we had Decca Tree (Shotguns) above the audience facing away from the PA and two other Shotguns under the stage pointed 30° up towards the audience and two condensers (SM81's) at FOH facing behind the engineer. They worked out really phenomenal and they really captured the energy of the audience.

MxU actually had a pair of SM57s on each side of the speaker stacks for front crowds. Worked fantastic. For some reason those mics are great for rejecting the pa when right next to them. I had researched what makes CBS to use and 57s came up... so I tried it. May not work too well if you also have front fills...

@Bodie Sylas I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process now.
I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.

Please tell us how you tackle and approach time alignment. It is been one of the biggest frustrations for me mixing live.

They mentioned using mics up near the board to get the house mix sound along with room/audience ambience. What mics do you recommend for that technique? Also, I’m watching this series newly at the time of the 2020 Covid-19 restrictions, and we are live-streaming our services without an actual congregation in the room. What might be some good mixing techniques to getting a large room feel without feeling hollow?

I love the idea of the audience mics and room mics. But how do you time align, mixing Console.. audience mics.. and ..room mics?
Currently I have an analog console. When we can we will upgrade to Digital Console, however until then what is the fix and how do I do it??

Brilliant! So how do we set the correct delay to the Room mics?

I know this is a 2 year old vid but here's what I think. Get a backup multitrack recording of your service. Load them in your DAW and listen to the close mic'd drum kit and the crowd mics. Slowly dial in the negative track delay until you hear they are aligned. Once you're contented, apply that delay in your digital mixer in the actual service.

Hello brother’s we have two ambiance mics are placed on the walls not pointing towards pa speakers but pointed towards the crow. By the way these are shotguns mics. My question is do I really need to time align these mics? They are about 25 feet away from speakers.

How about the idea of sending the room mics signal at the console to the inears along with the audience mics so that the performers feel the whole room as they always complain about getting diconected form the room and audience while using inears.
And in doing that shall we put the delay on the input channel of the room mics?
Suppose 70ft from the stage to the console so 70ft delay on the channel?

    • @balkipapek

At that point in ears would be useless. Just imagine playing drums that are 70ft away from you.

When you say "room mic", what exactly do you mean? Can you provide an example or two of a make / model? Or is it a generic term for a microphone (any microphone) that is just out "in the room"?

    • @jonathanwashington440
      @jonathanwashington440 3 года назад

You hit it right on the nose a room mic is just a mic out in the room facing the performance
