    The bat isn't supposed to be literal. He was looking at "the bat" like he was looking into a mirror. The giant bat was a reflection of himself. That's not man-bat. The scene was too dark and artsy for the tone of this movie.

    • @joshsauer4725

      If Scarecrow had replaced Riddler, this scene would have worked. Crane would have also fit into Riddler's backstory: he invents fear gas, wants to use it for exposure therapy, and Bruce Wayne denies it.

    • @mortenpotzdidler4677
      @mortenpotzdidler4677 5 лет назад +43

      And yet, the idea inherently leads to a problem: Wayne integrated the two personas, no longer struggling with his schism (which, let's face it, appeared to already be gone from the opening scene of this movie), and also no longer blames himself for his parents' murder.
      You can see how this sets up an even lighter Batman for sequels. This scene is about fully closing the book on the Burton Batman.

    I get why this scene was removed. It's near the end of the movie, Chase has just been kidnapped and Batman needs to rush out and save her, but this scene would have added so much to the movie. You've got Bruce referencing his father's journal earlier in the film, but yet it never goes anywhere. This scene provides closure to that, and shows Bruce letting go of the guilt he carried over his parents deaths, and finally accepting that he and Batman are one in the same. That's a big deal. It also makes his comment to Riddler at the end of the movie make more sense when he tells him that he is both Bruce Wayne and Batman. The scene is so incredibly perfect, and now that I've seen it it kills me that it's not in the film.

    Of all the scenes to have been cut, this one would have given Kilmer so much more depth as his version of the character. He blames himself because he learns that the only reason his parents went to the theater and subsequently died was because he as a child insisted on going. And it would have given more meaning to that speech at the end about how he's both Bruce Wayne and Batman, as represented by the mirror metaphor with the giant bat.

    • @jackthegreek6092
      @jackthegreek6092 4 года назад +4

      The problem was, the studio wanted a fin summer blockbuster after Batman Returns, this would have been seen too deep, I guess. J would love to see this movie again with this added back in though. Though to be honest with the villains being so silly, how much would it fix?

    • @dimitrikr9968
      @dimitrikr9968 3 года назад +2

      Actually it's the opposite. Bruce has always been beating himself up with guilt over his parents' murder because he thought it happened because he dragged them to the movies. In the scene where he grabbed the notebook during the wake and ran during he didn't actually read it, he was crushed by noticing the blank sheets. That notebook wasn't to be seen again, the guilt remained and grew. Now, finding it as an adult, he realises it WASN'T actually his fault because his dad wanted to go see Mark of Zorro anyway. Which ties in perfectly with his choice to remain Bruce and Batman, like he tells the deformed Edward Nygma after defeating him.

    This scene changes the meaning of the ending and for the better in my opinion. I always thought it was a little strange Riddler was screaming in fear as batman was apprehending him. Cutting to the flying bat didnt really explain much at the time. But now I see it as Riddler seeing batman as that Giant bat in that moment. That's why I feel like the cut of the flying bat is more effective.

Now I’m convinced that WB has some of the dumbest studio executives. The time period between this scene and the scene where Bruce wakes up after being shot in the head is a time for recollecting himself.
    That time period is basically about Bruce taking some time from the current circumstances, the reign of the Riddler and Two, and resolving the psychological problem he never faced. His amnesia is giving him time to rediscover himself and his identity of being Batman.
    When he encounters the bat he regains his identity of Batman.
    Needless to say, this is all in my opinion. I also think that to truly understand the meaning and message of this scene, us as an audience need to watch the film as it was originally intended to be viewed.
