While the movie version is more "complete", there is no denying that this early version is absolutely gorgeous. excellent clip! thanks for uploading, mate 👍
You can hear it in there wanting to burst out.
I love it. Sounds more romantic which basically is what this scene was about. The romance between Kirk and our Lady Enterprise
sorry dumbass, the final score is better
There is no doubt that this is an absolutely beautiful musical cue/motif by Maestro Goldsmith. However, IMHO, the final"Enterprise" theme that is used in the film is the better version. They are both majestic, and provide epic leitmotif's for the USS Enterprise...yet, I still prefer the version chosen for the film sequence.
The final version is clearly superior (in having both the final theme and in the way it flows) but this really is quite beautiful. It's also interesting to see what sections Goldsmith decided to salvage for his final version.
"Thank you Mr. Scott." "Aye, sir." Big grin. :-D
It meanders without a theme. Thank god Wise sent Goldsmith back to rescore it. I always love Wise’s reaction to the new version, “why didn’t you do that in the first place?” 🤣
Jerry is the greatest. So modest about redoing it.
Certainly has more of a "wagon train to the stars" sound than the sailing ship theme we eventually got.
It's funny because I believe story went that, upon hearing this, Bob Wise heard sailing ships and editor Todd Ramsay heard Conestoga wagons lol.
Wow. I just discovered there was an alternate score and this is the first scene I've watched with it (well done & thank you Daniel!) The theatrical version of the score for this scene is so iconic and wonderful, I hesitate to say that I disagree with most of my fellow Trekkies here and MUCH prefer this track to the one ultimately chosen. The reason is that the theatrical Enterprise Theme makes the focus the ship instead of *Kirk's reaction to the Enterprise upon finally getting his command back*. This original track was much more poignant and imho the audience feels Kirk's feelings for *his* ship and crew much more deeply. It also suits the overall aesthetic of the film better. I always thought the theatrical track, amazing though it is, was too big and misplaced because it drowned out Kirk, but it also was like shooting fireworks before church, as the rest of the film is more meditative and I felt all the loud explosive sounds should belong solely to V'ger.
Johann Popper couldn't agree with you more!
The problem with the piece is not really the piece itself but the fact that it and several but not all that preceded it all lack the same thing -- a theme. There's nothing about it that reflects Star Trek as a whole. Goldsmith's rewrite corrects that with some notes from the original ST theme and turns the scene into a celebration of the entire show, not just Kirk's reaction to the ship or the ship being the focus.
@@nicksambides2628 I like this explanation so much, I've changed my mind. Thanks!
@@johannpopper1493 Thank you! I am glad that I could help.
It's like that jazz music in Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. As soon as something coherent is about to happen, it gets changed up.
It's good, but it's just not quite there. It doesn't punch at the right moments. It doesn't soar where it should. Great posting! Thank you!
It's worth noting that this music didn't go to waste. Goldsmith reused it in STAR TREK V for Scotty's Captain's Log entry about the Enterprise's tech problems. So it did get used eventually, just not as the Enterprise theme proper.
I cannot possibly imagine Jerry Goldsmith (RIP) having to write all of this without any visual effects in place as he was composing. (indeed, the film notoriously had a lot of incomplete SFX in it because they were under such a massive time crunch to get this out by Christmas 1979, so much so that some production members went to the hospital for stress-related injuries!) I can see now how director Robert Wise thought it sounded too much like sailing ships in the harbor, and that it needed refinement; it's a bit too unfocused and kinda all over the place, highlighting in the wrong places. But in Goldsmith's defense, it would have been especially stressful considering how little time he had to work on the film... and then being told he had to completely rewrite a major part of the film _almost_ from scratch!
The reason for them having to rush to finish the FX was because the original effects house hired to produce the visual effects never managed to produce a single useable FX shot. When the finished FX were delivered Wise, Roddenberry, and Livingston were agog by just how bad and cheap they looked, but even more horrified by the realization that months, and hundreds of thousands of dollars, had been wasted with nothing to show for it. They ended up having to dole work out to nearly a dozen visual effects studios just to make their deadline.
If only Goldsmith was given the same accord in Alien.
Obviously the final version was far superior but this is still a beautiful piece of music. It still kind of sounds like the theme we all know. Love how Goldsmith still used some of the music in the final version.
To be honest after hearing this alternate theme. I feel its just as strong as the the final version as well, both are beautiful and grand.
It's a fine piece. Then again Jerry Goldsmith never wrote anything else. However, like Robert Wise said, the "theme" is missing. Goldsmith's second try gave him the theme he needed for the main title and created a piece of music that is as associated with Star Trek as Alexander Courage's original score.
Sounds like Christmas music
I find myself torn with the piece of music that was finally used and this piece, which I think is superior in some ways...more evocative of the future with ample use of the orchestral bells. Personally I think it is one of the best scenes in Sci Fi movie history, despite the naysayers who say the film was boring.
Thanks for the upload, was looking for this and most of the links to the alternate version were to a video that no longer exists.
This is beautiful, but I can also see why it was rejected.
I don't.
I don't.
It's more Jerry Goldsmith. Nuff said :) I hope his themes make a resurgence in the new Picard series, it won't be complete without them.
Any particular reason why virtually everyone who comments on this has to make a point of the final version being better? It's not a contest, people. This was an early draft that was replaced by the final film version, and is presented here only as a curiosity.
That's just human nature. I think all the comments pretty much boil down to "great, but..."
The final version IS better, and highlights how much thought goes into making a soundtrack. This version would have been more than adequate, yet it was felt that it didn't quite work, and the result is that we got the Enterprise theme we all love instead.
Uhura: it's how we all feel Mr. Pullian
Dr. McCoy: Why you inhuman green blooded ...
Kirk: Stop....competing with me!
Me: why didn't you title it something about it not being a contest and how you didn't want to hear whether people preferred this one or the other if it was such a big deal to you?
You: i wanted everyone to tell me thanks for the upload and ask questions about what it was and where it came from.
it's no contest indeed. the final is exciting. the original has no theme. it doesn't call to us. it never resolves. it disappoints. it frustrates. these comments are our resolution.
I like this ship! it's exciting 😃😂
If only Jerry Goldsmith was given the chance to re-write his music in Alien as well instead of going behind his back.
This version, this recording maybe, has a lot more warmth than the final version (also very great)
I may get some heat for this. But I can see why this didn’t make it as the final version. To me it sounds all over the place. There isn’t a hook where it needs to be.
No, most people seem to agree with you.
Star Trek The Motion Picture
Sie waren halt seeeeeehr stolz auf das neue Modell.
The Goldsmith Star Trek theme has stood strong for 40 years. I guess you need a couple tries before you get it right.
While I like the one they chose, this one has its moments.
It's has many and it's just as good as the chosen one.
Any chance to go aboard the enterprise!
VERY Stravinsky-esque
You just don't get decent scores much now, apart from hans zimmer. This is a good version
these films are SO BORING....too much emphasis on the props, toys and special effects!!!!!!!!!!!! NO USE for any of them except TOS. Only TOS episodes can be viewed hundreds of times without getting boring....it never ages...Long live TOS.... nothing compares.
