Saw them in fall of 91.
Some people comment ignorantly like.. these people didn’t even know what they were seeing. Like they knew. They weren’t even there. And oh yeah, I’d travel five hours to see them or get in a plane and go see him.
Stupid comments about we didn’t know. We knew the greatest music ever back then. We’d see Tool in small clubs. Kyuss, sound garden, janes addiction, Hole ( the we’re amazing before Nirvana .. thst witch was great ) smashing pumpkins al the best in small clubs and no one had cell phones. We just rocked out. We did t miss out on nothing back then. We lived !!

This video is a great example of how good the sound is at the Opera House. What was this shot on, one of those shoulder mounted VHS camcorders? The video isn't great but the sound is even, not too much of the high or the low. Pretty rare for a live show on video in the early 90s.

Nirvana was kind of like the Sex Pistols for the 90's they woke people up from bands like poison because most of it was boring.Nirvana brought back something new ,different and refreshing raw rock'n'roll back again. Now were back in a rut because of shit like Bieber,1direction.We need new bands like Nirvana to rid the music world of the garbage that's out there today. There is always hope.

I remember people-watching a lot of fans who were dancing around in the flat upper area of the Opera House who looked like quite-unquote “normal” people (ie not regular punk/grunge kids). I said to my girlfriend who I came with, “hey does it look like to you like this band is going to become really massive, like Guns and Roses massive.” Hahaha.

God, they were so fucking good. They were just so tight as a band. I'm stoked I lived thru this era. I was young. Just about 13 yrs old when Kurt passed and I remember being absolutely devastated. My mom didn't understand, she'd ask my why are you so upset over a singer? They/he wasn't just a band or singer to me. At that time in my life, I was going thru some shit. My parents had just divorced, my mom re-married. My step dad had 2 sons that lived with him, once we all moved in together, which we moved in with them, I had to leave all my friends and my step brothers just started beating me nearly everyday. My mom would ask why I had bruises all the time so I'd lie and say just playing at school. 1 I didn't want them to hurt me worse they had already taken a golf club to the back of my head and left me bleeding on the floor, woke up with blood all over me, the worst headache I've ever had and blurry vision and 2 my mom seemed happy so I didn't want to ruin that for her. Anyway, I felt so fucking alone and was very suicudal but the ironic thing was it was my oldest step brother who introduced me to Nirvana. So in a twist of fate I guess, the very person I wanted to get away from was the same person that introduced me to a band that for the first time in my life not feel so alone or so completely worthless. Nirvana gave me hope I guess you could say. I couldn't understand why it seemed like everyone hated me and just wanted to hurt me. Nirvana showed me I wasn't the only one. To this day my mom doesn't know what I went thru for 3 yrs and she's still married to the same guy. I'm glad I didn't say anything to her, she deserves to be happy. To this day Nirvana helps me feel okay. They helped me after my wife's suicide in June of '09 and helped me raise my two daughter's by myself. Sorry for the lengthy post, I am just so thankful for Nirvana and other fans like me. Much love and respect to you all.

Surreal to not hear the crowd go nuts when they start into teen spirit. 4 days before nevermind was released and 4 days before the world was changed forever. In 91 I was very aware of Nirvana don't get me wrong, but as far as the average music fan being aware of them at that time, they weren't from what I can remember. Pretty cool to see this piece of documented history. I saw them live in my hometown of Cincinnati in '89 and was completely besides myself. They were that good live. I even got to smoke a cig with and give kurt krist and Chad high fives after the show. There's an audio interview with them right after the show on RUclips and I was standing right there with them smoking a cigarette. This happened at murphys pub in Cincinnati Ohio in 1989. They were all such cool dudes to talk to. What I'd give to be 22 again.

I've always been so ambivalent about Nirvana's success. On the 1 hand, it brought their music to fans all across the world & enriched millions of lives.
But I can't help thinking that, had Kurt not gotten so famous so quickly, he'd still be here today makin music at a more modest scale. The hardcore fans would've gotten to see him musically mature & evolve. Courtney probably wouldn't have married him. Which would've been better for him from a mental health standpoint. We would have a legacy of excellent music; a John Lennon or Neil Young for Generation X, a generation with relatively few rock n roll heroes. Some critics call Kurt "the Last Rock Star" (which he probably would've hated). But they might have a point. What rock artist in the wake of Kurt has managed to define the zeitgeist? Jack White? He's excellent, but he's just an artist with a sizeable cult, not a superstar. Josh Homme? Same deal, basically. Nobody has come along and tapped the culture's mainline like Kurt. Is there even any rock n roll in the Billboard charts in 2019? I don't follow the top 40, but I doubt it. As a mainstream force, if rock ain't dead, it's inna coma. But, if it IS dead, I believe it shall one day rise from the grave to eat the brains of, I dunno... Rihanna? Ed Sheeran? Taylor Swift? Whomever, rock n roll's rotting corpse will run amok on the charts again eventually...

Did anybody reading through these comments see this Nirvana show at the Opera House?
If so, what are your memories?
I can see the back of Lee's Palace and the Dance Cave from my front window, I remember back in the 90s they had a list of past shows including Nirvana. I think it was also in 1991.
When I finish my Saturday morning coffee, I'll check and see if it's actually still there.

The RUclips sites LiveNirvana, Mr Nirvana 12, and Nirvana Archive all seem to have the audio from the Lee's Palace Show.
Unfortunately it's just the audio for all three.
Does anybody know why RUclips stopped letting people post websites in the comment section? I know a lot of people have said people were posting advertising websites, but I PERSONALLY never was interrupted by any advertising compared with the ANNOYANCE of not being able to post websites. Anybody else feel this way?
