    This week I have found when using the Sony A7Siii you can NOT use Clear Image zoom when trying to adapt the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8.

    Let me add a disclaimer for people that don’t understand what exactly I’m talking about which I totally understand.
    When using crop lens on this camera with a adapter (which should play NO interference between the lens and the camera) the A7SIII will NOT let you use clear image zoom.
    Why not??
    The only time I’m ever going to use clear image zoom is when trying to shoot with any APS-C lens, native or adopted. There is so many awesome lenses that are not able to be used on this camera due to a small software limitation that I think can be fixed with a update!

      I've got this exact same setup but I'm rocking the MC-11 adapter and I'm able to use clear image zoom with the lens zoomed out to 18mm, you should definitely check it out!

    First: I can't imagine why anyone would dislike this video. It's very valuable information for who it may concern (Sigma owners or A7Siii owners).
    Then: I have the Metabones "EF E-Mount T" - don't know which model exactly to be honest, but was more expensive than the Sigma back then (like 4 years ago? Dunno). Made a FW update _once_ , because before it the camera sometimes didn't recognize the lens.
    With this combo, Clear Image Zoom works @ 4k. Takes 1,3 x and then the tiniest bit to remove the vignette @18mm. I am determined to sell lens and adapter nonetheless. I heavily invested in native Sony and Sigma lenses, and they fit better. AF had always been a loud and slow affair with the 18-35, and more so with the A7Siii.
    Cons:
    1. there actually is focus hunting!
    2. whith CIZ, there is only WIDE focus area, which together with the hunting makes AF practically useless.
    3. This is ridiculously front heavy. MF only suitable when on a tripod.
    4. 18mm x 1.3(+) makes it effectively a 24mm, and I have the 24mm 1.4 GM. Which beats the Sigma. Character? I use a TBPM anyway, so I don't care.
    Pro:
    very little focus breathing (but for various reasons which took too long to discuss here, I don't worry about focus breathing).

    So here is the thing, just shot a whole wedding with this setup today A7siii + MC11 with Sigma 18-35 art. But the catch is you will get the usable focul length of 24-35 in 4k 24 to 4k 120. Just Tweek your stabilization mode to active to get that extra crop and woila you are all set. You got 24 which is wide enough and 35 a bit tighter both at 1.8 with ND on. Even works in small rooms. Trust me you dont need anything else. And this baby is super sharp. No need to do clear image zoom and stuff.

    Interesting video! I've tried the same pairing before and the Mc-11 adapter actually solves this problem! It allows you to do clear image zoom, at any point of the zoom range. Also the autofocus is great with it! Might be why none of the other RUclipsrs mentioned it.

    Okay so I did watch the video and I get what youre saying, but hear me out, if you use the 18-35mm on an APS-C camera, it's equivalent to 27-52mm because of the x1.5 times crop. If you zoom in to 27mm on the lens and it has full coverage, then youre getting the same field of view as you would using the lens at 18mm on an APS-C camera, so this isn't because it's an adapted lens, if you use a sony aps-c lens of the same focal length you'll find the same thing happens.
    Also, zooming in with the lens will give you higher quality than using clear image zoom, that's why sony defaults to optical zoom before going to clear image zoom. So this isn't really an issue. You can't use it at 18mm on full frame because the lens simply doesn't cover the field of view of an 18mm equivalent at full frame.
    Hope this helps a little.

    I’m convinced some of y’all that disliked the video and commented didn’t even watch the video or understand what he was saying 😂 keep doing ya thing bro but I think I’ll skip trying to adapter the 18-35 sigma to the A7siii if this is how it will behave when attached by an adapter.

    Thanks for the insightful info! Hopefully something a firmware update down the line can address as I'm sure a lot of people considering migrating to this camera may already own this popular lens. Well made and to the point - cheers Connor.

    Ofcourse theres going to be vignetting. Youre using a APS-C Lens on a full frame camera. Not only that but it's not even a lens meant for Sony. You need a canon to sony mount. The a7iii can go full frame and crop mode which will allow it to use only partial sensor and output for APS-C lenses without the heavy vignetting. Idk if the a7siii has that function you might want to look into it

    • @connorkasnik
      @connorkasnik  3 года назад

      What you just said is what this whole video is about.....you can't use APS-C lenses in 4k on this camera. Also the 18-35mm cant be used natively on a E-Mount System. The lens was designed with DSLR flange distance in mind, not mirrorless.

    Is it really Sony's fault or the adapter's fault?
    Its like you have a pc, and plug it a usb, the usb is not detecting, and you blame the usb.
    I just feel there is potential problem from both side
    Maybe its really A7S3 fault not detecting the adapter well due to some foremware, or it might be a hardware issue, the adapter didn't configure the pins well causing A7S3 missdetecting it

    why do you want to use the sigma 18-35 on this camera ? even if the zoom worked, @ 18mm you are so cropped in that you might be working in like 6mega pixels( not 12) & that might look like 1080p ? Just buy the sigma 28-70 f2.8 or 24-70 f2.8 problem solved :)

    • @rightangle4172
      @rightangle4172 3 года назад

      @callmesteelo i dont disagree. Its a good lens for crop sensor cameras. But if your adamant on using it on a full frame, then maybe try a speedbooster. If you have a 24-70 you can balance it at 50mm and it will remain balanced at 24 & at 70.

      I show with a E-mount sigma lens (the cameras software detects that as a native mount) and would you want to pay $4,000 for a camera that can’t shoot 4K with a crop lens?? The Panasonic S5 can shoot 4K with any APS-C lens, native or adapted...the camera can clearly use Clear Image zoom with any lens so why not Crop lens..ya know..the one time you would actually need it
