Great video! Tamron lens is always on my A7III but I still love Sigma 18-35

I have sony a6500 and a7lll the sigma 18-35 it always on my a6500 and now I want something similar to my a7lll in autofocus .already I have the tamron old version 24-70 2.8 with sigma mc 11 but Idont have autofocus in video but I want Prime lenses with good autofocus for video but the g master are so expensive:-(

I think A7RIII with Sigma 18-35 is a better combo if you already have this lens. with crop mode you still get 18mp, 5K down sampling to 4K in video.

Thank you @THS, this video answered several questions and saved me much time doing the evaluations myself. It also confirms other tech-bits I had gathered. I have a lot of vintage glass, 4ea-LeicaM & 7ea-CannonFD; it looks like the Sony A7 iii will be a good approach to re-purpose that glass in full-frame for 4k video use for the foreseeable future. The A7Siii and PansonicFF both appear to be over the horizon. Of course, I could continue to procrastinate...

I made so many videos on this and I wouldn't recommend for photos but for video I do recommedned it's a APS-C lens for APS-C. But I'd love the 18-35 so much
On APS-C it is indeed a great lens.
I think the same for video it's amazing on a6500 the only downside that's it's so heavy and the noise .but quality it's a 10 for apsc

Yes, the quality is much worse, I definitely recommend using full frame lenses with A7 III.
What do you think about using this Sigma lens in 4k crop mode on the A7RIII? I heard that the A7RIII has better video quality in crop mode because in full frame mode it does some form of line skipping. Thanks for the video.
Yes, that is truth, using crop lenses on A7R III or A7R II is different story, those indeed have better image quality in 4K video in Super 35 mode, because of that line skipping in full frame mode.
I just purchased this exact same gear set up, have you had any issues with the body supporting the weight of the lens? My only worry is the weight of the lens while the body is mounted to a tripod.
First of all, I don't recommend buying this setup on purpose or using APS-C lenses on A7 III, as I have explained in the video. Weight of this lens is not an issues.

Would love to see what the old Sigma 18-35 with MC-11 adaptor is like on the new Sony FX30 with continuous autofocus in video. I have been using a GH5s for years and I am trying to get some money together to buy the FX30 to get good continuous autofocus in video, but can't stretched to a new lens just yet (obviously will do in the future). Are you going to do a review of the FX30?

I always wanted this lens. But I never got it because the mc11 didn't support auto focus on the video or live view. I'm guessing you were manually focusing on the video?
No, it is all autofocus, which is supported in video of course.

I have a question. If it's been asked already please forgive the ignorance. Could you record a video in full frame mode to keep the resolution and then crop in post. Would this get you the benefit of the full resolution image, or would it just be a waste of time?
You can shoot 4K 3840 x 2160 video in both full frame and APS-C mode, so that wouldn't help you.
@@TheHybridShooter Do you loose any details of the image for being in APS-C mode vs Full Frame mode? I understand they are both 4K, but is it a lesser quality image because it's in APS-C vs Full Frame. I'm thinking the same way a Red Camera's 4K image is better than the Mavic Pro or a Mobile phone's 4K due to the sensor size. The a7iii in Full Frame mode is actually recording in 6K, is it still recording 6K and down sampling to 4K in APS-C mode?
@@stevenattaway Yes you are loosing detail and quality in APS-C mode due to the decrease of the donwsampling rate, even though it is still 4K.

Great review as always! I've seen some footage with the 18-35 f1.8 at 24mm and the vignetting was almost gone. Have you experienced the same?

Can you comment at all about the focusing sound while using continuous focus for video? It was a problem in the past that the focusing sound would be picked up by the mics, making the audio virtually unusable. I'm not sure if firmware/algorithms in the MC-11 have been improved to mitigate this problem or not.
Focus motor on 18-35 is just very loud, so it is still a problem and it can't be fixed by FW update.
I have Sony A7Rii and purchased Sigma MC-11 and Sigma 18-35 but its not working in video autofocus mode, the focus is keep hunting
That is caused by rather poor contrast AF on A7 II.

How did you come up with 8.7 MP? I thought it was 12 on super 35mmm
Pictures shot in Super 35 are 3936 x 2214 pixels, so that is how.

Yes, but you won’t be getting the same results as with F1.8 on full frame, if that is what you want to ask.

No, A6300 has much better image quality than A7 III in APS-C mode. You need full frame lenses for A7 III to get better IQ.

Hi William! What about "Clear Image Zoom" feature in FF mode? will it give any advantage, wider angle of view? or black frame will give only equivalent of ~35mm on all focal lengths?
Good question, you can use it with 1.4x clearimage zoom but there is still some vignetting at wider angles.

No, the performance is much better with Sigma 24mm F1.4 on A7III.

Why would they write 18-35mm if this lens can not effectively give a 18-35mm focal length on a super 35 camera? What's the point of writing that focal length? In reality, it should be around 28-55mm. This just makes it very confusing.
18-35 is the actual focal length. Full frame equivalent is never in the name of the lens, that would cause confusion.

No, I haven't. Only on A6500.

You can theoretically use it with clearimage zoom, but it makes no sense.
What if you used a speedbooster to adapt the Sigma 18-35 from a Canon to Sony mount? Then you should be able to get almost the same results as from a fullframe lens, right? Aaah, had to edit this. Won't make any sense since the speedbooster reduces the focal length and reducing it to a bigger sensor would crop it even more.
You're right, it won't work, because it is APS-C lens, it only works if you use full frame lens.

How did you calculate the megapixel count in super 35 mode? I think it should be around 10MP instead of 8MP.
By using the resolution of images that it outputs.
Sony shows it as being 10MP in stills and 8.7MP in video.

I’m a bit confused or I’m having trouble. I have a Sony a7rii E mount and I have the same Mc-11 adapter as you. Sigma MC-11 Canon Ef-E. I cannot get the sigma lens attached to it at all. Is there something I don’t know? Struggling here

My lens is a 18-35 A mount version. The MC-11 is Canon EF-E. Just won’t fit on! I have no idea. Possible to show a video how you attached it? I really don’t know what I’m doing wrong

Can you test the Canon 16-35mm f2.8 II on the a7iii for photo and video (AFC)?

@@contatofelipesoares The Canon 16-35mm II is an old lens and is not a sharp lens. It has poor image quality. With the Sony a7iii you will have a strong autofocus.

The reduced ISO performance in APSC Photo mode is obvisous to me. But how is the low light performance in video changing? Is it getting significantly worse in apsc even in video mode?
Could you make a video on High ISO comparison of 4k vs 1080p video in both FF and APS-C mode? Would be very interesting to see how the performance changes in lowlight.

Yes, both are in 4K. 4K is better because of down-sampling noise compression, and 4K codec is much better, so it looks much better overall, but I can't really quantify that difference. O have made full comparison of A7 III and A6500 with high-ISO samples: bit.ly/A7IIIvsA6500

I have a7lll and a6500 and I found the autofocus in video with the sigma works better on a6500 and I have the same settings :-(
If you have A6500 I see no reason to use it on A7 III anyway.

I noticed when i was shooting video not that long ago that 4K did crop a bit but as far as i could tell APS-C/35 mode was turned off.
Any suggestions someone ?
It crops 4K if you shoot at 30 fps. Only 24 and 25 fps is with no crop.

Really disappointed in this lens, its sharp but the vignetting kills it for me
It is meant for APS-C sensor so you can't really blame it for vignetting on Full Frame.
The Hybrid Shooter I don’t love the vignette it gets in super 35mm mode either. And even when I use it on my GH5 I can notice it
I don't see any vignette on APS-C cameras, on the GH5 it depends on the speedbooster.
