Danzig is a huge Devilman fan, he even has a tattoo of the Japanese logo.
He was a fan of Captain Harlock as well, screen printing his skull and cross bones on shirts to wear in the early 80s

Monkey Punch is like Mick McMahon to me (Only far more sexual in terms of his content) because Monkey Punch's art really REALLY changed over the decades. His initial Lupin III Manga was quite close to the stuff of the time, such as Leiji Matsumoto but it was quite scratchy (He was 100% a Dip Pen user) and I think he was also a dude who followed the trends of Manga (When it began becoming slightly more scratchy with the appearance of Go Nagai and his Devilman/Violence Jack work) but then he was also FAMOUSLY a lover of western comics, where you can see his Mort Druckerisms (Namely in female faces and hands) where as his men are straight out of Sergio Aragones and his silly but also incredibly detailed style (who he was a massive fan of).
What's even funnier is that Monkey Punch wrote the Japanese intro to "The Death of Superman". ALSO if you check it out in the later years where things get SUPER freaking lose, you can tell that the guy and tight deadlines had a price to pay on his output. Dude didn't get anywhere NEAR as much heat as Go Nagai did but that was because Go Natai started in kids comics and almost had to flee the country at one point because of the amount of fuss that he was causing due to the Parents Association and Monkey Punch was in the clear because he mainly worked for the equivalent of Playboy Magazine where he could get away with that stuff.
Anyway, one of the fun things is seeing Monkey Punch not having the time to change some of his mistakes because some Lupin pages are rougher than sandpaper across a snakes arse. Again? I THINK the dude was juggling a hit series (that had brief hiatuses), other commitments (such as cinderella boy) and I think the dude was stretched thin at points.
EDIT - Jim! Ed! GOTTA tell you guys. If there's a Kamen Rider you guys NEED to get a hold of, it's Kamen Rider Black's Manga. Ishinomoris last Kamen Rider comic (I think he wrote the Skullman Manga and someone else drew it) and it's his tezuka style cartoony manga but as a pure body horror story and it's GENUINELY surprising. I think the best way to do it is making your own bootleg from scanlations, but oh man, it's REALLY something.

Heh glad you guys discovered these. If you guys wanna know about manga reach out to us manga fans. SevenSeas is super well known in our community haha.
Devilman and Kamen Rider are 10/10 and essentially two of the best manga ever created. I like the others but Devilman is beyond insane. I actually prefer the sequel Violence Jack which is top10 manga of all time, and underated in the West, but well known over in Japan.
That Kamen Rider is the origin of real Cyberpunk. People put the origin with Akira but Otomo himself says the whole Biker Punk angle was from Kamen Rider and the same came be said for films like Crazy Thunder Road and Burst City. Kamen Rider set that cyborg-biker punk vibe up for the 80s to run with.
Agree with you guys I wish seven seas published more classic stuff. Go Nagai and Mitsutera Yokoyama alone are a treasure trove. Wish i knew how to print manga and get the rights myself!
Cheers for discovering this stuff guys. Welcome to the team.

Most of these can be found pretty easily at stores like Barnes and Nobles or online through RightStuf, I rarely see comic shops selling manga in general.
I can only speak on Lupin but Seven Seas is going to publish the second best of collection, I haven't seen a third one come out in Japan yet but there was an "Unpublished Collection" for the stories that never were collected. I doubt Lupin sells well enough here to publish the whole series again (TokyoPop sold them in the mid 2000s) or the later stuff that only had Monkey Punch as a writer but it would be amazing. He's definitely one of my favorite mangaka so I've been collecting his work for about a decade now, too bad I can't read it.

Very thankful to hear about Seven Seas! It's continually bewildering and frustrating that American manga publishers sort of stay in obscurity. Even the Vertical stuff is hard to come by (only been able to track down one issue of Tezuka's 'Phoenix' for a decent price.) And the websites of these publishers are...rough. Definitely seems like it must be a labor of love for publishers but would be great to see more stuff on shelves or at least more accessible and known online. This is a great PSA!

I found those Kamen Rider and GoRenger books at a Books-A-Million of all places, had no idea about the others but I do love the book design. I'll note that the "before Power Rangers, there was Super Sentai" header on the GoRenger book is what Shout! Factory puts on the header of their super sentai DVD box sets, I thought that was a nice touch and it doesn't seem to clutter up the design too much. I do like those cover designs as well, very simple, very eye-catching.
I'd never heard of the publisher either before finding the books, very curious how they're doing their marketing. Feels almost niche within a niche.

Regardless of how the stories themselves aged, you can open any of these damn books and go oh damn so that's how this whole style started from the art to the stories. Stumbled onto Seven Seas because they put out an english translation of Yokohama Kaidashi Kiko recently. Odd publisher, they seem to put out either cult classics or just really trashy stuff. I remember Lupin III being one of the big mangas that Tokyopop put out when they were still in business but I'm not sure how many albums of it they put out before folding. I'm sure people can find those floating around, since they were in stores at the same time CN was showing Lupin III cartoons on adult swim, so I'm sure they sold a few.

Enticing video! I was also surprised with the scratchy, sketchy art for Lupin III when Tokyo Pop had those volumes on the shelves of Borders Books - nothing like the style I'd associated with the Lupin anime, Lupin III: Castle Of Cagliostro (I was first exposed to that by way of the arcade game that utilized scenes from the cartoon - much like Dragon's Lair arcade game). I may need to pick up those Captain Harlock hardbacks. Interiors look luscious. Heard a lot about Devil Man, but never read it. I've been reading Tezuka's Dororo omnibus - it's the one Tezuka manga I've honestly enjoyed (I've tried Astro Boy, Adolf, Black Jack, Phoenix...) Thanks, gents

I have the Cutie Honey, Kamen rider and Goranger sets so far, picking up the rest over the next few weeks, I think the quality is amazing, Mazinger Z is only 5 volumes long for the fist run, They could do that in one or preferably two volumes, Have the colour pages, maybe include the individual volume covers for fun, Maybe some promos for the tie in movies, As far as Ishinamori he has so many amazing series, Cyborg 009, Inazuman, Kikider all great stuff, could see them doing any of them, But to me Mazinger Z is probably the one most likely to happen as the series is pretty well known out west despite only having a partial poorly done dub that people have nostalgia for.

These were all in your Barnes and Noble type bookstores. They don’t get restocked at my local one very often though, probably due to their price and their footprint. I don’t know if there are any additional releases currently scheduled aside from a second volume of Lupin III. Also missing from your stack is Claudine, which is a shojo manga from the master Ryoko Ikedq, creator of Rose of Versailles.
There are some other classic manga releases by other companies to keep your eye out for. Kodansha has been rereleasing a lot of the Tezuka material that Vertical published a while back and also just released Bomba, a lesser known Tezuka production. Rose of Versailles is also in print thanks to Udon.

Got into matsumoto later bc someone gave me a harlock DVD and aesthetic alone sold my ass. I'm primarily a superhero and Western comic guy but the 70-80s manga and anime I'm super into thanks to those. It took a fuckin Netflix anime to get those devil man books out here. THERES STILL COMIC BOOK STORES THAT DISCRIMINATE AGAINST MANGA. WONT CARRY AMYTHING BESIDES A FEW THINGS IN A CORNER. BARNES AND NOBLES USUALLY IS BETTER THAN COMIC SHOPS, WHICH IS SAD.
