There was also dry transfer tone sheets (rub down) and artists would use it for some effects like that -- it could be easily scraped off for even more effects
They also sold rub down lettering in white and black -- I'd lay money that was white type over grey tone. The other option is an overlay of the text with the printer dropping it out of the black plate before printing
This was a surprise read when I picked it up in a random box of indie books for 2 or 3 dollars at a convention. I mainly got it because the cover was so interesting and the size and format for a manga book. I knew it had to be pretty old but never would have guessed it was first published in 1990! Never heard of Jiro before then and been a fan ever since. I wanted his story Garouden to be brought over and officially translated. It's a story about a dojo buster martial artist tussles with Japanese pro wrestlers and they show him their real skills. I think it has some connection to Baki the Grappler.
Great book! We're getting a lot Taniguchi sensei here in Brazil, my favorite one is "The Book of wind" (rough translation here) a samurai tale, done with extremely tight scenarios and action.
Taniguchi has been one of my favorites since I found Benkei in New York in Pulp Magazine. I think Benkei is a better melding of hard boiled crime and his own style of slice of life but I still love Hotel Harbour View
The whole 'guy with a camers' scene would make for an interesting book. Some real creeps out there that want that scenario to happen. I'm friends with a couple of alt-models who have had some close calls. Feels sort of tossed in in the first part of the story. The silent pages are interesting though.

Recently bought the walking man. Really changed my perspective on what the medium could do, happy that it was translated in english.
The "incidental signage" on page 79. "Rachael". That reminds me of Blade Runner, the fatal brunette there as well, and looking alike :)

Which of Ed's comics features William S. Burroughs? I need to see and have it.
