"Life was hard in ancient Greece. The amount of sandmen, armed skeletons, giant scorpions and harpies we had to endure was almost unbearable. You thought Leonidas from Sparta had a rough time? You haven't seen Issyo yet!" But seriously, this a pretty good Castlevania clone. You could easily pay good money if this was released on the NES back then.
"You wonder why we were so big on the Gods? Well, when you look at the wildlife, you understand. When at any moment a sand man can rise up out of the beach and need killing, you'll pray for help. And usually you might get a bit."
When you are in armor and put down, he defends with the shield. You did not use that once, incredible. Congratulations on the gameplay, great skill. this is an excellent game, well nostalgic.
There's not a single Locomalito game I don't love and this is no exception. I admire that he never dumbs down the difficulty of his games; Curse of Issyos is no slouch, that's for sure. But it's fun-- really, really fun. Really happy for Locomalito that his games are finally going to see the light of day on consoles; they deserve to be known and loved by more gamers.
Holy cow, this is like an amazing spiritual companion to the nes castlevania games. Super cool! This developer has a lot of passion and talent. Incredible work.
Sound effects from Natsume games on NES and Castlevania. The Sun in the BG is like taken out of Rygar on NES. The theme of the game is like Battle of Olympus. LOVING this game.
Endymion Considering that Hades is way before Dracula, its reasonable to say that Hades would be the much more earlier physical embodiment of evil, so just imagine Chaos making Hades in the Castlevania-verse one of his early Dark Lord?
So it gets to the point where Koji Igarashi buys out the rights to not only all of Castlevania but also Curse of Issyos where he actually say that Simon Belmont is the reincarnation of Defkalion and Sara Trantoul is the reincarnation of Defkalion's daughter, pointing out that Simon Belmont fought against far more then just Dracula and his minions. If something like that actually did happen, what would you do?
You know what's ironic? Earlier today, I got Castlevania: Lords of shadow from the library and it felt like it took a lot of inspiration from God of war. But this game looks like God of war if it took inspiration from classic Castlevania.
That's also possible. To be honest, Greek mythology can't be copyrighted so pretty much anyone can make a movie, TV show or videogame based on Greek myths.
The original "Clash of the Titans" had to have been the influence for this amazing game. Finding his items along the way, armour and so forth in these snake boxes of stone. It's as if the gods sent these items and weapons to help him.
Since Nameless Jedi mentioned Jason and The Argonauts, I should mention that the Hydra in this is exactly like the one in Jason and The Argonauts as well.
Truth be told, when I started watching this playthrough, the first thing that I thought was how much it reminded me of Rastan. I thought that until first boss appeared, was quickly dispatched, and the laurel fell down. It played out exactly like Castlevania. Anyways, it is a cool game!
Athena: Your help is needed. Defkalion: Look I'm just a fisherman with a wife and a daughter- Athena: One will become a spider, and the other will be with Poseidon if you refuse. ... *And thus Defkalion went on his quest!*
This has been by far an awesome Castlevania'ish game to play and always had me coming back to it. I'd wish Locomalito would've put this one on the Vita or the Switch.
Every now and then, I come back to playthroughs of this game and Maldita Castilla because of how well made they are and how faithful they are to the games that inspired them. I realised something when I rewatched this game's ending: What happened to the other mortals living on Issyos? Did they evacuate along with Defkalion and his daughter, or did they sink with the island? The game never brings it up and I'm a bit surprised by that.
I think this is probably the best indie game I've seen- it exactly looks like something KONAMI Computer Entertainment Japan would've done back in the day, along with the VRC-6 sounding music.
+Random7 I wish that raft in 6-2 was 2x smaller and those purple urchins were one-hit-killers (SPIKES IN CASTLEVANIA!) and anything in stages 6&7 deal 4Hp in damage per hit (3 with armour).

I've never heard of this game until I saw this video. Downloaded it and played it. I wish this game would have been made during the days of the NES, it would have blown everyone away and raised the bar!

Very cool! An ancient Greek style Castlevania game! I'm surprised someone didn't think of this sooner. How about a feudal Japan/Samurai style Castlevania game next?!
El juego se basa en castlevania. Al enfrentarse a los jefes, la melodia es muy parecida al momento en que el quinto ario ordena hacer pruebas de velocidad a los remeros, previo al combate naval en la pelicula BEN HUR. Se ve entretenido.
Few levels in and I’ve been having a great time! 👍 Also for anyone looking for other games like this (other than curse of the moon which is good) there’s a couple upcoming games… Darkest Abyss coming in Q1 of 2024, demo available. Transylvania the Adventure of Simon Quest, coming in 2025 I believe idk about a demo but looks great. Not quite the same but Tiny Barbarian DX might also scratch the itch it’s great
I saw plenty of NES CastleVania in this, and I also saw some Battle of Olympus in this too. Only problem I saw with this game was that it portrayed The Gods and Goddesses in a very negative aspect. The game was saying that Olympus did not care about humanity at all. Which is anything but the truth.
I actually finished this game a couple of years ago, it took me quite a long time. I spent almost all my arrows searching for the soul so I had only about 10 or so for fighting Hades. I went all in at his final form because those flaming birds were too difficult to dodge. Luckily he died before I did. A great game.
I liked the blood-red explosions - no PG rating here, you are definitely killing monsters. Also liked how the first boss casually kills a giant scorpion with its first attack - lets the player know this is a boss and that it’s tougher than what you’ve faced before.
There are only so many keys in the game. Miss too many, and you cannot rescue your daughter. You MUST A: Save Hephaestos, and B: Defeat Medusa. Otherwise...
Crazy I always imagined an 8bit Castlevania type game set in ancient Greece were you play as a spartan warrior facing all types of monsters from Greek Mythology and Hades being the final Boos and this is it!, I had even imagined being able to change from swords to spears and bows. My only gripe is it seems a bit short ,the bosses seem kinda easy and a few too many recycled enemy types.
Imagine how this game would sell back in the day accompanied with the clash of the titans film! I will check it and play it,although in castlevania franchise using allot of mythical, creatures this game is much more based in ancient mythology. If in greece used copyrights for each mythical thing used outside our territory we would be one of the wealthiest countries in the world.
Misconceptions that Hades was like the Grim Reaper or even Satan, which is far too common I notice. Poor Hades.
