The Mask (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthrough of THQ's 1995 license-based action platformer for the Super Nintendo, The Mask.
Played through on the normal difficulty level.
The Mask, released about a year after the Jim Carrey movie upon which it is based, was one of the later SNES releases in North America. You play as Stanley Ipkiss, a regular guy who finds a Loki mask that gives him super powers when he puts it on.
Am I the only one that wished that it instead had been based on the Cher movie about the kid with the messed up face? :D
The movie was notable for its special effects that blended live- action video with a lot of comic-styled computer animation to give Stanley's character a super exaggerated look and feel. Though the game's graphics resemble the original comic's art style more than they do the look of the film - there are no specific actors' likenesses used in the game - the animation nails the over-the-top look of the film's special effects nicely. Ipkiss's eyes bulge across the screen when a boss appears, and his special weapon attacks all come with funny, flashy bits of over-exaggerated pizzazz. The level backdrops are all a bit mundane, but the characters all look and feel the part nicely.
The gameplay is solid, but nowhere near as memorable as the presentation. The levels tend to all be huge mazes with some irritatingly convoluted layouts, and though they are fairly easy to get through, they feel like they were designed to prolong the game's short length. The seven stages can all be easily cleared in under an hour once you've run through them a few times. There are tons of hidden items to find, and the enemies all have generally discernable patterns so you dont often take unavoidable hits, though the timing can be annoyingly particular with some of them, especially during the excessively drawn out boss battles.
Overall, The Mask is a pretty decent game, and far better than what you might've expect from THQ, who in 1995 was only just starting to make inroads on improving their reputation after the deluge of garbage they unleashed on consoles in the early 90s. It feels to me a lot like Irem's Rocky Rodent, though lacking a lot of the polish and good level design practices. Still, it sits firmly above mediocre, which isn't a bad place to land as a movie tie-in game from this time period.
Just one question - why would they not secure the rights to Jim Carrey's likeness for a game based on one of his movies? That alone probably would've sold the game!
Oh well. There was an Ace Ventura game from around the same time that features his likeness quite prominently. If you're curious, check it out here: • Ace Ventura (PC) Playt...

As a kid, I remember spending weeks, if not months trying to beat that game. Seeing it getting beaten in 40 minutes is really surprising.

this movie was my childhood
i had no idea there was a game but i remembered the cartoon
OMG same
krystalfan I played the game when my sister and I were little, and it’s fun!! SMOOKIN!
Same here. Never played this one. Old school Jim Carrey was the best though.
@@linclogames True words. Ace Ventura, Dumb & Dumber , Liar, Liar, Cable Guy, The Mask, The Riddler
What a legend.
neither did i lol
I was at the local flea market when I was 11 years old.
I remember cracking up just by watching some guy playing the game, as I never saw a SNES game this cartoonish and hilarious!
It looks seriously awesome. This is coming from a Genesis kid.
I haven't played this game in years but the soundtrack gave me so many memories, now I wanna play it again.
It’s exactly 2:00 am in the morning and I couldn’t sleep, and I was thinking about my favourite childhood game so I looked it up on YT ❤
HOLD ON TO YOUR LUG NUTS, IT'S TIME FOR AN OVERHAUL!!!!!

Dude 1:30am such memories
I remember how hard it was to beat the final boss and watching this video, now I know my memory is very good haha he just doesn't die, damn!
The soundtrack gives a flashback to my childhood. What nice days they were.
Nice to see that Cubby from the movie made it into the game.
They kept the same music style as the movie and cartoon.

2:00 The Mask: HEY!!!
2:04 The Mask: HEY!!!!
2:06 The Mask: HEY!!!!!
2:15 The Mask: HEY!!!!!!
lmfao
The Mask is one of my favorite movies of all time. Thanks for showing us the gameplay of The Mask.
Stumbled upon this now. I never even knew this existed.
The Mask was one of my favourite movies when growing up.
Looks fun, but also looks like a Mask-version of Micahel Jackons Moonwalker game.
Reminds me more of Disney's Aladdin (Genesis) actually.
The Mask (SNES) ALL BOSSES
5:40 Granny (Apartment)
11:53 Construction Worker (Work Zone)
16:09 Fat Gangster (City)
20:00 Leaf Blower (Park)
26:05 Prisoner (Jail)
33:57 Masked Mobster (Casino) FINAL BOSS
The first boss is Mrs. Peenman, the grouchy and grumpy intern and the final boss is Mask Dorian Tyrell, the villian of the movie. Also, the casino is actually the night club Coco Bongo.
In the End, How were there 2 Mask 🤔
I thought there was only 1 Mask
The First Boss is Mrs. Peenman, Stanley Ipkiss's Evil Landlady
I have tbe power of sket skeet skeet Tyler dundar
Loki(Stanley ipkiss) vs loki (dorian tyrell)
This is the most beautiful Super Nintendo game in my opinion.
Not a controversial opinion at all imo.
Have you ever played EarthBound?
Can't believe I didn't know about this game, until now. This looks awesome, the animations are spot on and funny. Just alone the way he walks makes me laugh.
When I was a kid, I for some reason had a DVD with some of the episodes from the cartoon. So, I thought that when I'd grow up I'd make a game about Mask, and he as one of powers would have become super strong, like in cartoon. And as it turns out, this game actually exists
Wow, this game looks like a forgotten masterpiece. I would have loved playing this as a kid growing up in the late '90's. My exact type of platformer.
This is great game...so much good memories from my childhood in 90's.
The animation here is incredible for a SNES game
True! This game is gold
True
it's is 100% Alladin game animation.
I like the satisfying chaos this game has lol there is no one dimensionalism. He's dropping through floors, slipping through vents, sliding past a hitman and taking the elevator to a different floor.
Ik I Never Played This🥺
The last boss isnt necessarily hard. But it tests your patience on how long you can hear that AOOOOOOOGA sound before you take the catridge out and unload a clip into it
6:03 That landlady in the game and movie is a REAL pain in the ass.
You gotta admit this is one of the best intros of all time
His walking animation cracks me up so much
I walk like that irl 👍
Bro be doing the Dr. Livesey walk.
As a kid this was my favourite movie, we rented this game from blockbusters and I was gutted I couldn't get past the first level, couldn't work out what the hell to do!
"Erhm actually this is a videogame 🤓"
This game is sssmokin!
You said it, brother.

Very good and underrated game for the snes. The graphics and animations are really cool. The control works really well. Music feels like the MOVIE. The difficulty is high but has a lot of humor in the game. The game can makes you smile in some moments. very good on overall. One of first snes games I play on emulators
Amazing looking game and will be one of the first games I emulate as well. I'm blown away that I never knew about this one.
me:
RUclips recommendations: have a full playthrough of the mask on snes
I used to watch this movie back when I was a kid that had no idea there was a video game of it.
It might not have been the most polished platformer on the SNES, but especially for a movie tie-in published by THQ, it was a surprisingly solid and entertaining little game. But I gotta wonder - where is Jim Carrey?!
He's gonna be THE eggman!
...
That's right, all I know is that they will use both names in the movie: eggman and Ivo Robotnik.
*SSSSSSSSSMOKIN"*
TIL This game is actually beatable, that first boss alone is nonsense. The platforming barely works. OwO
It was good to me you can only become Jim Carrey when you get defeated but you were too good to be beaten well played
Well animations look cool, plus super moves look fun as well, but I got tired of only watching these insane maze-like levels, I can only imagine how tiring running through them for the first time.
Such beautiful visuals. What a greatly drawn game
It’s a game based on the hit film based on a comic book.
Yeah
Yep, that's how it works a lot of the times.

This was surprisingly awesome and hilarious. I'm used to movie tie-in games being rushed to meet the release of the movie and being a load of crap, but Toy Story and The Mask have pleasantly surprised me. :) Great playthrough!
Watched the Movie, read the book. Watched the cartoon. Never thought there'd be a video game! 😀
Underrated snes gem
totally agree
Thanks, Alex. I played that game "The Mask" on SNES.
I wanted to play this so bad as a kid. I had to be maybe 10. I remember Chips Ahoy had some kind of giveaway where they were giving away copies and I tried so hard. The Mask was a big character of my childhood. Super underrated by today's standards I think. Beautiful movie and one of the last vestiges of old hollywood with sets. I was in love with the ambience of Edge City.
Finally getting to see the gameplay, the movement looks "rubbery", like Bubsy. It doesn't give me the vibe of intuitiveness. For example, I would have never guessed you could use the vents to move to new areas of the level. They look like part of the general environment. Love that the game had an Edge City ambience, but the stages seem repetitive. Boss fights felt unstructured. I could see this having been hastily produced to capitalize on the movie's success lol. I see that the game was in 1995, the movie was a year earlier.
thanks for sharing!
I like the sound effects for the money icons in the game
God, I have spent so much of my grandma's spare change at my neighbourhood arcade playint this one.
This was never an arcade game though, unless someone jerry rigged an SNES into an arcade cabinet, and set everything up to cost money to play. It also wasn't on Nintendo's Super Play cabinets either, though I have never seen one of those with my own eyes.
Yeah, welcome to Latin America.
I love his animations, brilliant 😂
"Whoops! Sorry, wrong pocket!"
Legit 7y/o me that time didn't know what 'rubber' was, until I hit 12.
I can't believe I beat this game as a kid... The last boss is so long to kill and the ending so not worth the effort lol. Good memories tho!
I never knew about this game! 😂glad I found this and also the horn is a weapon too😂😂
Eu era viciado nesse jogo no super Nintendo 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Massa relembrei de mais a minha infância.
Esse jogo é foda de mais. Um dos melhores do SNES. Ótimos gráficos, história e jogabilidade.

This 16-bit opening logos were something else.
I think this game takes place in a different universe such as the events of the movie go differently like after the second time Stanley puts the mask on, he got never shot at by Kellaway but instead by Dorian Tryell who shot a tiny piece of the mask and it grew into another mask which Dorian Tryell put it on and overthrew his boss, which he becomes the most powerful crime boss in the city in hours, while The Mask discovers that the mask is temporarily sealed while it regenerates the piece that got shot off and finds out it lasts for a couple of years, so therefore he decides to take Milo and all his stuff from the apartment and moves to a house that is more to his style, such as a big fancy house with curtains of cartoon characters, a large swimming pool with animal water rings by the side for him to float on, a big tv screen, a large water bed with other large beds to sleep on, massive sofas to sit on and a large kitchen to cook in due to spending the money he stole from the bank, then he finds out about Dorian Tryell’s takeover of the city and him holding Tina captive somewhere in Edge City, so he decides to stop Tryell and save Tina so he goes to every place to find out information on where they are, which is why he was in the apartment building to begin with because Mrs Pennman was forced to work for Tyrell like nearly everyone else and after stopping him and saving Tina, he sees the other mask on the floor and picks it up, which is when Tina picks it up from his hands and puts it on her, which she turns into a green-headed woman with a flaming long hair, a blue dress, blue slippers and blue long gloves on her arms which is when The Mask gets overwhelmed by the beautiful sight of her and turns his head into that of a cartoon wolf again and kisses her, which she changes her head into that of a cartoon wolf as well and kisses him as well, which after they did that, The Mask cleans up the city most of the crime and becomes the new mayor of the city with Masked Tina as his wife and breaking the fourth wall says to the audience Smokin!! And he and Masked Tina starts kissing each other again.
You know what's crazy I just finished reading the mask comic book the other day and wow it was a very very gory
i played this game a lot in my day, it was too good
Am I the only one who thinks this would make a good AVGN episode
ur good kid real good, but as long as I'm around..you'll always be the 2nd best u see!
Here's something funny. I entered the GamePro contest for this game, and won a year's subscription. My name actually got printed in the magazine because of it. I've also never actually played the game. Lol.
Hahaha that's hilarious
sounds similar to my TNMT - Turtles in Time - EGM Tricks of the Trade Code of the month submission (Konami Code 2nd controller)...never got my game!
TMNT. You have the M and the N reversed.

Fun to play, funny, fast, colorful and well designed
If you got a super nintendo,an like platformers, you GOT to play this game
If not, get an emulator and play it anyway
I'm not a big fan of platformer but this one is the exception
Thanks for the share, bring back good memories, nostalgia :)
*sigh*
Thanks for making these videos and turning back the clock. Sincerely.
You re-lived memories that I forgot, thank you boss
Hey i played this game when i was a kid. Best game ever :D
(I was confused at first then got a hang of it)

This game is perhaps best known for the Nintendo Power contest that was run in conjunction with the game's release, where the grand prize was getting to visit the set and appear in The Mask 2, which obviously never got made. What we got instead was Son of the Mask with Jamie Kennedy, many many years after the original.
I remember reading online that the winner that was supposed to be in the movie was given a choice to receive a copy of the video game or $5,000 cash and he chose the money. Obviously.
This game aged really well
I really love the mask's magical powers.
I was a 90 kid, but just thanks to this video i know this game exist
yo this was satisfying to see you play this game so well!
I Never played this game before but the mask is awesome
Man I remember this game like it was yesterday.

Am I the only one who wouldn’t mind seeing the Angry Video game Nerd review this?
Nope
I don't remember that I ever passed the boss at 19:59. I was about 10 years old when I played this game. It was nice and I remember that l played it a lot, but like many video games of those times, this game got too hard as you progressed in it, and there was no save game.
First time trying out the game 🔥🗣️🔥🔥🔥
When I was a teenager I played this game on Super Nintendo I loved this games
Finished this game today using emulator. I played this as a kid in arcade and never finished this because of the last boss. I realized you can have a life and power by taking the notes .. My goodness!

There was originally going to be a Genesis version, but it was cancelled thanks to how long it already took for them to make the SNES version, not to mention they assumed the hype for the film would've already died down by then.
I never knew this was a video game until just now and I had a SNES. How crazy is that?
I feel like Genesis owners might enjoy this game more instead of SNES owners. Those people are probably too busy playing Mario Kart with each other at the time.
I'm a Genesis '90's kid and this is 100% accurate.
The good ole block buster days
_It's explained why the Super Nintendo was the best of all time in its generation - Check out the gameplay of this game - Congratulations_
Trashcan lid and a baseball bat, truly creative right their
Imagine paying full price for something you finish in 40 minutes back in the 90s. Those movie tie in games were notorious for being too short.
I suppose that doesn't happen anymore, huh?
I remember cartoon and it was on boomerang channel I had all Jim Carey films growing up that's where I was introduced to the mask, I rented the game from blockbusters and have it on emulator for my son
If you want an example of how big Jim Carey was in the 90s, The Mask, Dumb and Dumber and Ace Ventura were all turned into cartoons.
What. My childhood game.. I'm not dreaming. Wowwwwee
That game looks awesome!
I was very unfortunate to have been exposed to the second Mask film on the Cartoon Network channel; it was hell

very well made game animations.
I wonder how Stanley and Dorian managed to battle at the end as they both wore the mask at the same time xD
Great patience you had there, congratulations.
PD: The ending dance is gold, very respectful to the actual movie :O
For development, lead programmer Matt Harmon played the original Sonic and Virgin Interactive's Aladdin for speed and collision, hence the fast moving style.
and if i remember during last years or was 2016's agqd they actually got in contact with him during speed run and was a bit embarrassed when people learned to exploit the fast pace gameplay
reminds me of boogerman too, the warping through the map ie
the mask and rorschach are my favorite superheros
Great playthrough. I remember playing this at a friends house all the time and loving it. Plus, I loved the movie.
Holy... Those enemies sure are spongy... If only the devs made'em less durable, I'd play the game.
Edit: Thanks for completing the game!
I laughed so much while running and punching in this game... When I saw that again I almost pissed myself. Hahahahaha
This game needs to be in the switch!
