New Yorker Gas Boiler Flame Roll Out & Cleaning

During this "no heat" service call, we found that the roll out switch was out caused by severe flame roll out. We disassembled the boiler and scrubbed the carbon clean between the cast iron sections.

Very well done. All too often I have seen recommendations to just swap out the boiler rather than give it a good cleaning. I have also found 2 things to hep - an air gun/compressor to blow out any carbon stragglers and borascope to search down the sections to make sure that nothing was missed.
Have you found any cleaning solutions for getting the top layer off or melting the carbon from the sections?

@@gyver471 it takes several hours to complete this service -it took 4 hours for mine. Depending on your location - the $/hour will vary but the time should be in that range.

Great job! How can one know if the heat exchanger is cracked? Will a bad damper cause this?

Fill the boiler with water and check for leaks or perform a visual inspection. No, a bad damper will not cause a HX to crack
