    I like videos that SHOW the problem. I get tired of videos that just talk without showing. This one shows symptoms very well. Diagnosis steps are shown. You don't just say what you did. Also A-B-A. You showed the problem (A). Showed it fixed with the cap off (B). Then put the cap back on to make it go back to the original bad condition (A) again. You are able to "turn the problem on and off", showing a correct diagnosis.

    We're too many generations removed from direct hands on fire tending(campfires, coalstoves, woodstoves, etc.)..
    Oldsters generations ago taught us well about giving fire enough air to breath.
    When I was little ,my best friend had a coal fired furnace in the cellar just like in "The Christmas Story" , only his father was friendly with and he spent time teaching us all about tending it properly.
    I still remember the sweet smell.
    That's why coal oven 🍕is heavenly.

    Nice detective work… I wager that most techs would have diagnosed as a bad heat exchanger. You went the extra mile and figured out what was making it roll out.
    Nicely done!

    Just an FYI. The switch you pointed to is not a rollout switch, it is a blocked vent switch since it is nowhere near the burners. Also, just another FYI, right above the status codes is an explanation of how to decipher the status flashes. The number of short flashes is the first digit and the number of long flashes is the second digit, so, it was displaying a 31 code.

    • @taylormack34
      @taylormack34 2 года назад +1

      FYI it was unsafe to run a furnace when the venting is disconnected while testing for a blocked vent. Just spilling the flue gas in the space.

    Hi there, thanks 4 expert diagnosis. I just had the rollout switch replaced but the hvac tech told the tenants possibly not to turn on the heat due to flame rollout. Tomorrow Im having a licensed tech that Ive worked with before check out the system and if more repairs r needed. Your video gave me a few places we can ck albeit we may need a new system wh is wh this tech recommended but if that is so, why wld he install a new switch. The unit is 3-4 yrs old. I got the info 2nd hand from the rental agent as I don't live there. Jan

    Thank you so much , I am having a similar issue , narrowing down my furnace noises . I don't have a bad rollout , but ignition bangs after a switch activates canceling fuel .Fan stays on , then igniter glows , fuel clicks 3 , or 4 times , the a loud thump , and burners ignite with a good blue flame , very small Orange streaks every few seconds flowing with blue flame , not rolling out . Looking into blocked flute , and others next .

    Check draft, combustion with an analyzer and formulate an opinion. Excess backpressure (flue too small, too many elbows/offsets partial restriction very dirty or decomposing combustion chamber. The cap would be step one or beginning not the finis of the investigation. Exhaust gas temp would likely be high if draft and/or inlet air is not correct. Looked like a lot of flame there not staying where we want it - in the cumbustion chamber tubes. This is not a one diagnosis answer.
    Particularly on a unit that old I'd ring her out good. A 20 year old gas furnace with that kind of roll out still evident has problems just a new cap are not going to fix. Draft check, attic ventilation, inlet air adjustment, gas pressure, stack temp % CO in the stack. visual of the stack in attic as the top looked kinda ratty. *Also noticed it appeared they reduced the stack size coming out of the roof*! Wow see what I mean? The cap is a hint and evidence not the end of the diagnosis!!
    I respect your skills but 36 years of experience is wrapped up in this comment from me with the best of intentions to benefit you and all of us that want to do good work and keep our customers safe!

    Before you put on a new cap, what would the new cap fasten to. the venting is so chewed up, that top section of venting must also be replaced. don't just put a band-aid on it. Good diagnoses.

    Put your hand over the small square area where the draft rollout switch is that you reset. If it isn’t negative pressure there, you have a blocked flue, and the draft safeguard switch is just doing its job.

    Keep that cap; just put a pipe clamp on the chimney, or better yet just take a piece of 3 inch PVC and slip it over the chimney. That will support the cap, protect the chimney from further rust damage, and look more visually attractive -- for a cost of about 12 bucks for an 8FT length of PVC.
