  • For those of you who do not know, because nonStar Wars fans who don't know still exist, shockingly enough, Emperor Palpatine, a.k.a. Darth Sidious, is the primary antagonist of the Star Wars saga, portrayed in live action by the stage actor Ian McDiarmid, and by various voice actors in the tie-in media, examples including Nick Jameson, Ian Abercrombie, Sam Witwer, and Tim Curry.
This breakdown of Emperor Palpatine's martial proficiencies and weaponry was not drafted for a match-up, but instead as a dedicated profile of Darth Sidious' lightsaber skills, specifically in pre-Disney Legends material; I am not discussing Sheev Palpatine.
For this reason, I will be taking Palpatine's appearances in the 2008 Clone Wars animated series into account, as the series is still pre-Disney. Furthermore, Palpatine is the one established character who isn't done dirty by TCW, his appearances reflecting well on him and actually adding to what we know, as opposed to retconning and replacing the existing lore with an inferior copy, as is TCW's usual trend.
This breakdown of Emperor Palpatine's martial arts will be emphasizing his direct combat feats and training, and will be drawn from the following sources, listed in chronological order:
Darth Plagueis, The Wrath of Darth Maul, the TCW episodes The Lawless and Sacrifice, Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir, Revenge of the Sith, Dark Times: A Spark Remains, The Force Unleashed, Return of the Jedi, and Dark Empire.
Background information on the Star Wars setting will be drawn from the following:
The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, The Complete Visual Dictionary, Lightsabers: A Guide to Weapons of the Force, the Book of Sith, The Jedi Path, and the Jedi Academy Training Manual.
With all of that out of the way, let's begin.

A personal fan theory of mine is that in terms of raw developed skill and technique, Sidious is at the same physical level of skill as Maul. But his overwhelmingly greater power in the force allowed him both precognitive reflexes and raw force power to speed blitz opponents it never became an issue because except for Yoda Mace or Dooku no swordsman was superior to him enough to exploit the skill difference and even if they did he was so godlike with the force he didn’t need to be better. Like you said he mainly did it to humor opponents and he let that stagnate his abilities.

This is just a personal theory on my part but I believe that Sidious’s digression as a lightsaber duelist had already begun between TPM and ROTS. As he was busy operating as both the chancellor to the republic and the Sith Lord and orchestrating the clone wars he had very little time to hone his skills besides his sparring with Maul who was presumed dead at that point. From there I believe that he coasted on force augmentation and the skills he knew by muscle memory until Mace Windu and Yoda both overwhelmed him in a lightsaber duel. After he became emperor and the Jedi were nearly wiped out Sidious ultimately turned to the path previously taken by Darth Traya and Valkorian and doubled down on force powers thinking he’d never find himself in another lightsaber duel again. And then Luke Skywalker showed up…

@@muhdaqeel7330 agreed, armored krayt while still strong compared to others is still hampered by the armor and wouldn’t handle both the speed blitz of sidious lightsaber and the power of his force abilities. Reborn krayt on the other hand I think has an edge over sidious in the physical department, arguably a more skilled duelist and without the armor hampering him could keep up with sidious speed, and while I think sidious in terms of raw power in the force is above krayt, krayt isn’t that far off from him and does wield abilities to help him hold his own against sidious. I think with his loss against Luke and Leia it's worth mentioning that just before their fight he summoned a force-storm which must have taken a significant amount of energy and he was in a ailing clone body. Given Lukes performances before and after Dark Empire I don't think DE Luke&Leia could beat him with any consistency, with their victory being very circumstancial, even though their special twin bond likely gave Luke a bigger amp than any ordinary battle mind.

Oh yes, Luke and Leia's win there was highly circumstantial. However, the point that Jen was making was that all those circumstances did was even the playing field in their force amplification and make it a contest of pure skill, in which Luke won. Not because he knows more techniques, but because his style is actually focused and made for combat, while Sidious let his skills atrophy and was flailing, letting muscle memory direct his movements.
Totally agreeing with you here, just to make that clear.

First time you've ever put a video centered on Sidious. Nice job.
However, I would stress that Sidious only lost to Mace Windu when the latter sensed Anakin in the building, unwittingly using the young Jedi's fear to tip the scales. And Lord Sidious himself played the helpless victim, smiling in triumph as Anakin sliced Mace's hand off. It is also mentioned in _Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader_ that Sidious' confrontation passed "without incident", meaning he had everything under control from the beginning.

Firstly can I just thank you for making this video. I have waited years for somebody to do a martial breakdown of Darth Sidious, and you sir have delivered. Seeing you dissect his fights and providing a breakdown of the actual techniques he used was much more interesting than the vague “he was a master of all seven forms.” This video proves it. I understand your gripe with Disney Canon, but what about his appearance in Lords of the Sith? He may not duel but we do get to see him brandish his lightsaber and, by all accounts, having a fun time doing so.
I never saw him as a Sith Assassin but it does make absolute sense, with him literally working from within the shadows to manipulate people and events as well as how he applies his abilities. Would most Sith Lords of the Rule of Two era fall under that category, since warriors and marauders would serve little purpose to the Grand Plan other than as blunt instruments, but that would risk exposure. I know Mother Talzin refers to Darth Maul as a Sith Warrior in TCW but was that more as generic title rather than a specific archetype? In that context is “Sith Warrior” the equivalent of the rank of Jedi Knight rather than the specialisation of Jedi Guardian?
I enjoyed this video so much I’m going to rewatch it right now

Interesting that after yoda, sidious is next.
Some general points i have. The biographical format of a characters skill and development really shines with characters with long and established histories like Darth Sidious or Darth Vader. But for characters with less content to work with, I feel it drags things out to much.
And Darth Sidious training as a sith weapon master does make sense to me given that I would classify Darth Plague as a Sith Weapon Master.
Disagree that Darth Sidious is a Sith Assassin when because he is clearly a Sith Inquisitor.
Also, do you still rank Darth Sidious as a tier 3 swordsman?
Personally, I think he ranks as a tier 2. He clearly is more developed and well rounded than a tier 3 and contended well against Mace and Yoda but doesnt have their motivation for lightsaber combat, and his skill set was spread thin, leading to his skill to stagnate and lack the focus of his contemporaries.

    • @geoffreyedgson7875
      @geoffreyedgson7875 3 года назад +5

I would argue perhaps Tier 1.5. He contended with Windu and Yoda and clearly had multiple reliable skills that were at an impressive degree. Most Tier 3's specialize in only 1 approach to fight any and everyone, whether style (Anakin, Kit Fisto) or tactics (Qui-Gon Jinn, Darth Zannah), or have a critical shortfall that undermines them from standing as Tier 2 (Asajj Ventress, Galen Marik).
Darth Sidious picked his battles carefully, managed to over-whelm several Tier 3 figures repeatedly, and could alternate between offense and defensive rolls; I honestly didn't recognize his habits for roving retreats or frequently creating a home-field setting before inviting enemies to fight him. Furthermore, Sidious could recognize his own short-comings and if disarmed or wounded, he would always escalate to the Force and grow more dangerous than he had been with a lightsaber. He was disarmed by Yoda, and Mace Windu was a far more enthusiastic warrior than Darth Sidious. Darth SIdious might not be Tier 1, but he was extremely varied and always had a high performance output, even is enraged or possibly deranged; somewhat akin to Azula in the Last Airbender.
Not a Tier 1, but definately above Tier 2's, leaving Tier 1.5 has a reasonable middle.

I would think he probably still is. He has limited combat and rarely practices, so that kinda holds him back. He's not tier 1 and probably isn't tier 2, tier 3 sounds fair. At the lowest he's probably low tier 3 (Eeth Koth/Adi Gallia/ Qui Gon Jinn level) and highest might be tier 2.5 (Anikan Skywalker/Ventress Level).

I stand by my characterization of Palpatine as a Sith Assassin, as my belief is that Rule of Two Sith Lords start off training as Assassins and gradually transition into Sith Inquisitors.
As for Palpatine's rating, I place him as a Tier 3 with a Tier 1 modifier. Against anyone who isn't Tier 1, the versatility of his technique combined with his sheer output makes him almost impossible to engage, but against a true Tier 1, his thinly spread skillset becomes a problem. Ultimately, Palpatine doesn't take lightsaber combat seriously, and is only as good as he cares to be, not as good as he could be.

    • @robertgeorge4602
      @robertgeorge4602 3 года назад +4

Absolutely agree that sidious is only as good as he cares to be. Your tier assessment is also really interesting. I’ve never thought about using a modifier with how someone is rated. I thought the system was a bit more rigid.
While the idea of the rule of 2 Sith training having heavy assassin component to it, that doesn’t mean their primary class is assassin.
Characters can have primary and secondary archetypes. Like Darth Malak is a mix of Sith Scientist and Sith Warrior (to me) but his primary class is Scientist due to him focusing most of his efforts on research and development of the Star Forge tech.
To me, Sidious primary class is Inquisitor and his secondary class is assassin.

I believe Darth Sidious took Darth Bane’s teaching to heart, mastering the Fast and Strong styles rather than the multiple forms favoured by the Jedi Order.
Fast style being a refined hybrid of Makashi, Soresu and Ataru
Strong style being primarily Djem So and Shien
Prior to his first death Sidious appeared to favour Fast style supplemented with Strong style blade locks and blaster deflection (Lords of the Sith). However following his rebirth on Byss and in a much younger body, he appeared to use the much more static Strong style, perhaps if nothing more than to humiliate Luke Skywalker and his use of Form V, since he appears to focus more on brute strength and blade locks rather than the acrobatics he favoured around the time of the clone wars.
But both Fast and Strong styles served as the stepping stones to his true form: Juyo

Additionally: Do you feel the distinctions between Jedi Knight and Jedi Consular are all that necessary? I've always felt that Jedi Knights are more the intermediate Jedi still focusing on their combat development, while more advanced characters were the ones with a deeper force connection and better swordsmanship. I really think the distinction is more for the sake of videogame classes, rather than what we see in Star Wars.

While this was, of course, partly because his lightsaber was stuck inside a sculpture for several decades, not to mention his limited free time as a result of his political career, I also feel that Palpatine only got to that level in the first place just to say that he had done so, with his desire to carry a lightsaber stemming from his use of it as an egotistical exercise rather than for a love of the craft.

After 4ABY he had to change decaying cloned bodies faster and faster and by that time his final death was inevitable no matter if he managed to posess Anakin Solo and I even think that deep down he knew that but just wanted to buy himself some time to destroy the Jedi once and for all and possibly find a new apprenrice who'd continue his vision for the galaxy.

@@bluehero-96 I can't see why he couldn't have come up with a pretense for leaving Coruscant. Perhaps something diplomatic/political. He could have used a body double to fool his watchers. He is also much more well versed in deception and misdirection than his jedi counter parts. That was the biggest strength of Banite lineage. So him being able to do this isnt unrealistic to me. As for Dooku, he could have fought Maul but he was in the middle of waging a war. To add to that, this was personal for Palpatine as Maul was HIS former apprentice. Now i understand if you arent fully on board with this. So i'd like to give an example of what he could have done.
Palpatine hears of Maul's exploits. He takes action by coming up with a pretense for leaving Coruscant. A diplomatic mission in the Outer Rim. Somewhere in galactic frontier. The ''goal'' of the mission could be him (his body double) attempting to mend relations between the Core Worlds and the Outer Rim by addressing the economic and social injustices felt by the people. During this time all of his servants operate on a need-to-know basis.
He later finds an opportunity to swap places with his body double. Perhaps even using the dark side to dull the senses of his watchers or to make the process smoother. He uses a hidden shuttle to travel to Mandalore. He puts his former apprentice in his place and later has him moved to Stygeon Prime. After that he returns to his body double and swaps places for the last time. He then makes his way back to Coruscant. I know this is very vague and you could probably find problems with it but im just trying to convey (in a general sense) how Palpatine might have acted to make his attack on Maul be possible (and not be caught red handed). I could go into the nitty gritty but at that point i'd be making an overly long and downright horrible fanfiction (relative to what i've already written at least.)

Wasn’t he first named Sheev in the novel “Tarkin” by James Luceno? I assumed that novel (as it was one of the first to be published after the Disney acquisition) was written to be tied to the EU as it often references characters and events from TCW, just as Luceno’s previous Star Wars novel “Darth Plagueis” had. I see that novel as fitting in with both new Disney canon and the later years of legends continuity, so to me he has always been Sheev. In the Darth Plagueis novel Palpatine tells Plagueis that he refuses to be known by the name his father gave to him, instead going solely by the Palpatine family name instead. I honestly think less people knew Palpatine’s first name than the amount of people that knew he was a Sith Lord. In fact off the top of my head I can only think of two people: Tarkin and Gallius Rax.

Vader gets bested by The Emperor way too easily, and even unarmed, Vader should be able to drop royal guards with ease, but they give him trouble to set up a contrived scene to start a nonsensical plot. The Emperor "punishment" or "trial" is fucking stupid. After leaving Vader for dead, the latter gets temporarily droid limbs. Which is neither cool or makes sense. Then Vader finds his old jedi starfighter, just sitting there like he parked it yesterday. It's been 20+ years, that thing would be salvaged, scavenged, or destroyed within a few years. As would have been the CIS remnants. The hyperdrive ring is also still there, and ticking, which is also stupid. Do you get the point? Basing a story on references and rule of "cool" doesn't make it good.

I got an interesting new idea, have a random character in fiction be thrown into the star wars universe and say weather or not theyll survive it.

    2. Can Superman Survive the star wars universe

The reason people hated palpatine returning in the Disney one was because of how it was mishandled. If palpatine was going to be introduced then it should have been planned from the very beginning. Like if they revealed that snoke was secretly palpatine all along, which wasn't the case. Unfortunately the sequel trilogy just kind of made things up as it went along and tried to appease the fans by bringing the emperor back at the last moment

@@timothyeckard5182 Exactly. It wasn't built up. I myself, before I got into the EU, was initially confused and thought it was somewhat hypocritical, since both Dark Empire and Episode 9 brought Palpatine back, but I didn't realize that DE built the foundations and explained why. Episode 9 didn't.

I thought Dark Empire was some of the weakest in the original Legends content in the sense that it was bland, recursive and kinda made Vader's sacrifice pointless. Also the power scaling of Palpatine in that series is bonkers and there's some weird storytelling decisions.
Is it better than Rise of Skywalker? Absofuckinglutely. I would no doubt take an adaptation of Dark Empire over what we *did* get. But based on my casual perusal of the post-RoTJ Legends content I'd put Dark Empire well under the Dark Horse Legacy comics, the Thrawn Trilogy or Legacy of the Force.

@@wristofkings Not really. Vader's sacrifice meant that Luke could live to rebuild the Jedi Order and the Empire would splinter into pieces and the power vacuum would allow the New Republic to form. And that's what happened in the EU.

Ah, that wouldn't be bad though I see no point in him making Palpatine vs Caedus video. Caedus is much more suited to be compared to Vader not Palpatine. As it's uncear whether Vader would actually be defeated by Caedus (though I know many prople say he likely would), it's absolutely certain that ROTJ and even DE or ROTS Sidious would wipe the floor with Caedus. Simmilarly with Revan. However, Palpatine vs Vitiate and Palpatine vs Krayt videos is something i really hope for.

@@robertgeorge4602 Well, I know that a lot of people object to the retconning of Maul's death and how he was used in TCW, to the point of only considering his TPM and prior version part of Legends.
Connor seemed to voice that same dissatisfaction before (he pretty much only used Savage Oppress in a matchup so he could rant about what a shitty and malformed character he is) so to see him use TCW/Son of Dathomir Maul is a little surprising. I'm not gonna hold it against him though.
