    Bane and Luke having a conversation about the force would probably be one of the most interesting ways to frame the contrast and conflict between the light and dark sides

    • @Wright805
      @Wright805 7 лет назад +113

      I agree that would be fascinating to read. We get a hint of something like that in the Book of Sith when Bane writes "the Force is not fire, it is venom" (i.e. the dark side is stronger when concentrated in one rather than spread among many) and Luke adds his own comment "Bane was wrong. The Force IS fire" (i.e. the light grows stronger as one torch is used to light many others).

      If such a conversation or debate about the force would exist, then I belive they would find one point to agree on. There is no death, there is the force. And as we all know, if there would be a thing such as a master's degree in the Force, then Bane would be a Doctor, giving Luke a run for his money, but Luke is also a Doctor in his very own kind of way :) So yes... it would be interesting to see these 2 debating the harmony of the light side vs the benefits of the perks of the dark side.

    Luke was in many ways the prefect Jedi, as he embodied a much healthier idea of light side attainment. He didn’t shut off his feelings and he still had attachments to the ones he loved. He experienced emotions while still having a strong sense of emotional control to keep any chaotic emotions he may have controlled. He’s not a Jedi who has simply made a life based around avoiding adversity at all costs, but a Jedi who has made a point to maintain control through adversity. So to me, Luke is a true Jedi.

      @@kibatgrenbuku He does. In fact, Luke represents the Jedaii of old, who accept the dark side as a necessary to the preservation of all life while embracing light side that was within them all. The Jedaii of old in EU however, turned away from this true ideal of force by an excessive fear of the DS true nature and as of result of “preventing the evil of the DS”. They committed greater evils to their brothers who wanted to maintain the ways old of which is the Balance between both sides of Force and it resulted 25,000 years horrors for the entire galaxy.
      Luke’s New Order represented the end to these horrors and the acceptance of humanity for all sentient beings within the galaxy which would result in the eventual end to Sith since they were allowed to freely express their individuality without excess fear of the DS.

    One thing I've always found fascinating about Darth Bane is that his nature and training are not at all suited to his goals. He is a soldier, equipped and able to batter and brutalise his opponents and tear through opposition. while not unsuited to cunning and adaptability, he is *not* a grand schemer, or someone who fights as one. And yet, he forces his way to that end through sheer indomitable will. This leaves him open to many mistakes, as he is trying to create the mould that would eventually be exemplified in Darth Plagueis while having the inclinations and temperament of Malgus, seeing that *that* is what the dark side and the Sith need to survive and thrive. His success, despite these shortcomings, are I think his most laudable accomplishments.

    • @jaydom8264
      @jaydom8264 2 года назад +9

      I disagree that he was not a grand schemer. He literally created “the grand plan” of the sith, which succeeded in darth sidious. He also became the sole dark lord of the sith by tricking the brotherhood of darkness into destroying themselves with the thought bomb. He schemed his way into extraordinary weath and power in his lifetime in order to further the grand plan. Not bad for the son of a drunken miner.

    I really liked this video. Very good production values and editing. I thought this was a great matchup, you excellently chose the versions of each character and the way you analyzed and detailed their characteristics made clear the close similarities alongside the stark differences in philosophy and execution each character possesses. When I initially saw the title I actually thought of Bane as the Paragon and Luke as the Renegade. Bane a paragon of the Darkside, an example of a somewhat more traditional powerful pure Darkside, whereas Luke is an example of a somewhat more unorthodox Jedi given the way he was trained, being unafraid of the dark and taking a variety of aggressive and even Darkside skills and applying them with a Jedi bent (hence the renegade part). The heart of this matchup seems to me to be about a difference in philosophy and application as it pertains to Jedi vs Sith approaches with similar skill-sets. It's very well done.

    Surprised you think DE Luke is only PoD Bane level. I've seen at least one favorable comparison of DE Luke to prime Exar Kun, who is comfortably above DoE Bane let alone Bane near the beginning of his Sith Lord career. Granted even DE Luke gets a bit overwanked. People think he took on DE Palpatine alone, which is decidedly not the case. He would've been mincemeat had he not been amped.
    Excellent versus though. Definitely one of your best matchups and puts a fresh spin on two waaaay overrequested/overwanked characters. And dead on with that panning of New Canon Luke... ugh. The NJO storylines weren't always the greatest, but taking GM Luke (as ridiculously powerful as he was) and downgrading him into a disgraced nomad and failure is such a huge bitch slap to the fans raised on EU continuity.

      I think it's not fair to draw conclusions about canon Luke until the next two movies drop. Maybe he's playing a longer, deeper game. I will say that I will be greatly disappointed if he did just wuss out and ran away. That being said, I didn't much care for EU Luke's evolution. He was made into a sort of gary stu. I think him being a "force god", as Jensaarai put it, was not compelling at all. He was the Superman of the SW universe, but even DC did a better job of establishing Superman's limitations than Lucasbooks did with Luke Skywalker.

      I agree that Luke was pushed into Gary Stu territory and the DBZ-level of power he achieved was more than a little ridiculous. Mace, while this is true, i wont dispute that, I would like to point out that on Tython, Bane was aware of the advantages offered by the orbalisk armor and molded his lightsaber style around basically being an untouchable juggernaut.
      in Dynasty, he was aware he wasn't lightsaber impervious and so had retooled his style.

    After seeing The Last Jedi, I concretely agree with your statement at 4:12-4:35. The backstory behind Ben Solo's failure is an insult to how Luke handled Kyp Durron, and his struggles with the Darkside. Most of the scenes between Luke and Ray were reused from Vima Sunrider's apprenticeship under Ulic Qel-Droma, blended with Metra Surik's detachment from the Jedi and the Force tempered with Kreia's philosophies.
    While I do agree with some topics and scenes inThe Last Jedi, Luke's story and actions were an insult to the character. However, on the flip side I cannot think of a better way for Luke's death than in The Last Jedi: using his powers to provide a final aid to his allies and family, accomplishing a feat like a mass Force-illusion towards tens of thousands of people from an entire planet away before releasing himself into the Force.
    You are completely accurate in your description of comparing Legends Luke to Cannon Luke.

    Do you think your next vs video can be Anakin Skywalker vs Darth Malgus? I feel that Anakin takes it because he goes in to a fight on the offence, but unless you piss him off prior you get a very deadly and a calm deadly Anakin Skywalker, Malgus falls victim of going too crazy with his lightsaber moves when he gets heated and develops a sense of tunnel vision because of this, I personally feel this is why a level headed fighter like Obi Wan Kenobi or the afore mentioned Anakin Skywalker(he is usually level headed but he won't be unless you piss him off)would beat Malgus in an out and out fight to the death, though I am a BIG Anakin Skywalker fanboy so I will concede to bias. However this is Anakin Skywalker vs Darth Malgus.
    Physicality = Anakin, Malgus is about 60 by the sacking of the Jedi temple and has a respirator which Anakin can easily exploit, they have comparable strength but Anakin is faster, they both have very high pain thresh holds as well so that is moot.
    Use of the force = Equals, Anakin has more raw power yes and their variety with their power is comparable. Malgus is a very well rounded force user, male storm, push, pull, choke, lightning, saber throw, cheating death and I wouldn't put it past him that he can use basic mind tricks and all that, Anakin has comparable variety in his powers having all of that minus male storm and lightning, but he makes up for it with force scream, being able to override the will of the force itself, he could subdue both entities of the light AND dark sides of the force and he's able to move really heavy objects with ease(using this to also rag doll certain individuals namely Assaj Ventress and Barris Offee)like the separatist dreadnought in the comics he was able to redirect with no issue so they're equals in my eyes.
    Duelling skills = Anakin, I feel that his showings are more impressive than Malgus as a pure lightsaber duelist as he bested THE master of makashi for his time in Count Dooku, his mentors hold him as only below Yoda and Mace Windu, he was duelling said makashi master as a fucking padawan and held out for longer than his master, bested the infamous Assaj Ventress as a bloody padawan although she was talented with killing Jedi masters and held her own against Mace bloody Windu and he was credited as being a natural warrior. Malgus isn't particularly bad but I feel his kills come from outlasting his adversaries or having them piss him off just before he engaged them increasing his strength, Satele and Cao Sen Darach = Vindican and Darach dying(the former gave Malgus a power boost as he wanted vengeance for his master), Satele Shan = Malgus won the fight, but he didn't kill her and he only won the duel when he used his force abilities on her when she was off guard and his most famous kill Ven Sallow = he did kill the Jedi, but moments prior he did witness his wife get harmed which fuelled his passion to kill the Jedi that did the deed and nearly killed both of them as Sallow almost stabbed him near the end of their duel so Malgus's victories in said duels is considerable, but for the reasons I have given his skills as a duelist have been largely over-exaggerated I feel.
    Weaponry = Anakin, though this doesn't really matter all too much tbh but the extra blades on Malgus's lightsaber are cool looking but have no real purpose in battle, Anakin's weapon of choice is standard but because he has given it a different option for length of the blade, it could be helpful in pushing Malgus back.
    The verdict:
    Let's say this is more comparable to Malgus's duel with Sallow, but with Anakin in place of Sallow, I feel it would start with Malgus on the attack but Anakin would be able to hold off his assault and when Malgus attempts to kick Anakin in the face, Anakin grabs his foot with his right hand pushing him back into a pillar with the force, Malgus would be staggered momentarily as the 2 engage in a blade lock with Anakin on the offensive, Malgus would try taunting Anakin however this effort would backfire as Anakin broke off the lock and sent him flying backwards into a whole group of Sith with him in the temple and he was met with a huge pillar coming his way. This kills his whole group but not him as he evaded the pillar and immediately got back up to engage Skywalker, but the duel would swiftly end while they are charging one another as Malgus would have his blade above his head, but Anakin would be running low with his blue blade at his side while sliding underneath Malgus and splitting him in half, vertically.
    And thus, I declare Anakin Skywalker, the chosen one of the force the victor.

    • @wristofkings
      @wristofkings 7 лет назад

      I dunno, I think Malgus takes this one 6/10. Sure he's slower and his bloodthirsty nature sometimes hinders him, but between his augmented cybernetic strength and terrifying power blows I don't see Anakin easily blitzing him. Plus Malgus never gets tired, is a more cunning fighter, has an arguably superior defense, has a much more varied arsenal of Force powers and is more willing to use them than Anakin.
      On top of that Anakin may have taken on some fairly impressive opponents but his record is somewhat inconsistent and circumstantial at best, and on any given day he is much more used to fighting droids, bounty hunters and the like during the Clone Wars era. Get him in the zone like he was against Dooku and Malgus is fucked, but even his win against Dooku must be tempered by the fact that the old man was already depleted from fighting both Ani and Obi Wan prior to that.
      Meanwhile, Malgus has literally been at war for something like 30-40 years against other Force wielders and has taken on the best of them with overall strong results. He beat an exhausted Kao Cen Darach while still a Sith apprentice, outclassed Satele Shan in both their bouts before outside interference, and killed Ven Zallow fair and square, along with a slew of other Jedi and (presumably) Sith. It's a very close match, but Malgus should take slim majority.

    • @andrewstokes6623
      @andrewstokes6623 7 лет назад +1

      Like I said, I feel Malgus's duels are usually in his favour circumstantially before they even begin as almost every duel he's been in his strength was amplified due to someone hurting someone close to him and the only time that didn't happen, he got hurt himself and sure he bested Shan when she was an apprentice and Jedi knight, but he has extreme tunnel vision in both fights, the one on Alderaan being most obvious example where he cannot hear that one trooper rushing towards him like a madman so his tunnel vision is a major hinderance in his duelling style. By contrast, Anakin was more well versed in defensive manoeuvres as well as a brilliant offence as his whole style revolves around that very concept, attack defend attack and using his superior acrobatics which I mean were VASTLY superior, he can easily out manoeuvre Malgus and either hit him with a force attack or engage in lightsaber combat with him.
      In my verdict, I made it clear that Anakin here is basically the Anakin that bested Dooku mindset wise so Malgus is screwed and when I said get through and exploit his respirator, notice how Anakin's style is strength but elegance at the same time? I simply feel Malgus wouldn't be able to defend due to his style being like a bar brawler squaring up to a trained fencer, sure he's threatening with his brute strength and clear experience advantage but his mindset is all over the place in a fight so that strength is often hindered whereas Anakin is tempered and more controlled than Malgus, the ROTS novella notes that Anakin out-fenced the best fencer of his era given what I've said about Anakin's state of mind being more akin to his bout with Dooku than say Obi Wan, Anakin should take it 7/10 I feel.

    • @wristofkings
      @wristofkings 7 лет назад

      You make a fair point when it comes to Anakin's acrobatic prowess, but virtually all of Malgus' ranked Jedi opponents were speedy Ataru users (Darach's a Niman user but I see a lot of Form IV in there) and he still beat them down or tricked them into exposing an opening. The only speed fencer that consistently matched him as a duelist was Aryn Laneer, and she still lost when Malgus started leveraging his superior Force abilities. Which he could easily do against Anakin.
      I don't see the respirator nor the tunnel vision as huge deficits in a one on one duel, though it would depend on the environment. In someplace like the Jedi Temple there's not a whole lot of hazards Ani would be able to use against him. As for the respirator, Malgus is certainly not anywhere near as vulnerable as Vader and can still function without the respirator up to a point. My understanding is that it's more a treatment option than a life support device. He also has about 90% or more of Vader's defense (his main weak point being the head, everything else is very well protected).
      As for the brawler vs fencer analogy.... I've argued the case before that Malgus (on a good day) is more than fair competition for Dooku, but that's neither here nor there. Fencers care about technique and precision, to the expense of practicality (I realize Dooku's kind of a poor example to cite considering he always focused on not being enslaved to form). An experienced brawler on the other hand goes with what gets results, and Malgus is *very, very* experienced.

    • @alexalexalex92
      @alexalexalex92 7 лет назад +1

      I'd put Malgus just barely ahead in this one--I place a lot of stock into how physicality and martial ability hybridize, and Malgus does a GREAT job at this--he's all about flow and chaining EVERYTHING together the second he gets an advantage. Against someone like Satele or Zallow, who don't get quite as swallowed into the move-by-move cadence of the fight, this works against him, but Anakin is all about focusing on the here and now in his fights. He could step back if he wants to, but against an opponent this tough his instinct would almost definitely be to lean in and keep pummeling. But when Malgus inevitably puts him on the retreat for a moment, this same fact would allow Malgus to keep on pushing for longer than Anakin can fully deal with, and because he doesn't look around to escape or environment to get out of Malgus' way, he essentially gets pummeled by the bigger and far stronger Sith.

    I think Emperor Viscuit is an extremely difficult character to use. He is one of the sith that has empowered themselves to such tremendous extends that they can't really handle their own power. Another that falls into this category is Nihlus who has it to an even greater extent. Vishuit's powers differ greatly depending on time and location as he tires extremely fast and is constantly absorbing power and energy.
    Vischuit is more of a conduit for the powerful force energy of his empire than a powerful force individual.

    I feel I have to say this. The new cannon about making a crystal bleed to make it red is utter bullshit - its far better to keep it as a synthetic because it shows talent in creating it, and there are ideological considerations regarding its performance with cutting rather than handling being emphasised, and the creation of something by the individual that could stand against natural crystals used by Jedi. Fuck Disney for changing things.

    The new EU continuity makes it seem as if order 66 killed all but 6 Jedi and I don't like that, I trashes the abilities of the Jedi. Now I am a Sith sympathizer but how can the sith be strong if all they had to do was get the soldiers to gun down the Jedi.

    Hey Jensaarai1 , i am a bit confused about your comment with regards to Banes saber styles. You say , you are analizing Bane from Path of Destruction , and you mention he uses Djen So exclusively during this time , but if i remember the book correctly , by the time he dueled his Zabrak nemesis ( forgot the name ) , he was already using Soresu for defense and Djem So for offence , with hints of the 7th form already beggining to show their face head , during the duels with Kasim.
    Or do i remember that wrong ? Its been a while since i read the novels , so i apologize if i am confusing some stuff.

  • @GrizzlyHansen
    @GrizzlyHansen 7 лет назад +3

    Kinda a unfair match up, Luke is from the age where Jedi Power are off the charts and they made shit up as they went along, while Bane is from a more structured time where having over powered characters is kinda lame, kinda like putting old school Superman who could sneeze away a galaxy against Thor from the Avernger's movie. Old school comics made all thier characters OP as fuck, though this was a fun video.

  • @ariesstorm9577
    @ariesstorm9577 7 лет назад

    As ever well done Jensaarai1, this was a well balanced matchup between two warriors who were just beginning to discover their true potential. It's been a while since I've read Dark Empire.
    Loved the honest comparison between the Luke we all grew up with and depressed drunk we see in TFA.
    So could Jedi like Luke and Obi-Wan be considered unofficial masters of Form VI, just with an emphasis on Form V and Form III respectively?

    • @AkosKovacs.Author.Musician
      @AkosKovacs.Author.Musician 7 лет назад +1

      Star Wars Lore Keeper I don't think they are master of form 6, but took the element of force integration, only and built it into their style.

    • @ariesstorm9577
      @ariesstorm9577 7 лет назад

      Ákos Kovács I meant purely in terms of just skill with the blade, since Form VI was described in the Fightsaber Article as a combination of Forms III, IV and V built upon the foundations of Form I. Both Jedi use all four forms to some degree or another, and both Jedi are proficient in Jar'Kai which is associated with Form VI (although not exclusively, their use of Jar'Kai has more in common with Form IV tactics).
      But on the subject of Force integration, do you think the way a Jedi uses the Force in combat is dictated by their chosen Form? For example would a Form III stylist use telekinesis to affect the world around the opponent, seeking to off-balance rather than outright knock over with a Force push? Would a Form IV master hurl Force pushes and shoves at an opponent's exposed flanks while using the aggressive acrobatic blade work? A Form V user redirects or absorbs an attack before retaliating in kind with a solid telekinetic blast to knock the opponent on their back side. If so then would a Form VI master use any and all three tactics in Force combat against their enemies?
      In the novel Darth Bane Rule of Two, a young Zannah (before she even becomes Bane's apprentice) uses the Force in a subtle way, aiming a force push at Bane's feet to trip him rather than attempt to knock him in the back to the ground. It fails but Bane appreciates the method that Zannah used. Looking back it could foreshadow her personal use of Form III in lightsaber combat, never directly engaging an opponent head on but using patience to wear them down until they leave themselves exposed to a lethal counter strike.

    Noice. But one complainant: You said that Luke can deflect turbolaser fire with his force shield, however, the panel in question makes specific note of his lightsaber abilities implying that it was rather a blast deflection. To confirm this, if I remember correctly, the audiodrama gave the lightsaber deflect noise on that part showing that it was meant to be understood as blast deflection. I know he appeared to use a barrier, but I always assumed that was simply part of the surreal art style.

    • @opporancisis5237
