So my hair is over-moisturised! Now that I know this, I can already see tomorrow's wash day going down a treat. 🔥 THANK YOU!!! 😍 I would also love to see a video about split ends - why it splits, how to stop the hair splitting, etc. 😉
Split ends are totally normal! It happens from styling, eventually the ends of our strands wither away and split. Prevent them with protein moisture balance, limited styling, and sealing them. Protective styles help reduce split ends because you don’t do you hair as much. And the ONLY way to fix them is a haircut!!
@@katerirose8540 I haven't tried them yet but yesterday I bought Loreal Elvive Total Repair *Extreme* Renewing Shampoo/Conditioner, it has wheat protein and ceramide. I kind of settled on this brand bc of the cheapness bc I'm having trouble finding affordable natural products with protein and this brand actually caught my eye because it said protein on the bottle so that was enough for me 😅 After I'm done with these I'll try to decide where I should go from there but I'm hoping I can just get like a protein shampoo and then maybe a moisturizing conditioner to rinse out so I don't absorb too much moisture in my hair. I also bought a spray gel that is supposed to work well on fine hair to eliminate frizz bc I have frizz from my frizzy/fluffy/undefined hair 🙃

Love love love you Mell...Could you pleaseeee do a review of cheaper shampoos such as L’Oréal, Sunsilk, Herbal Essences etc.? Basically low end products...
Hi Mel. Just wanted to say thanks! This has been one of the most helpful & informative videos I've ever watched. Not even all the hairdressers I have spoken to in my life have provided me with this much insight into how to care for my low porosity, fine textured 2a wavy hair! I now realize I have been using way too much protein and that silicone is not the devil! In fact, I used Pantene (insert horrified face here) conditioner this morning and my hair is silky, perfectly wavy and frizz free! I now know how to read my hair and give it what it needs! Love you and your videos! 🥰
Oh no! Sorry to hear that! Make sure you listen to your hair by testing the elasticity and porosity to make sure you treat it for what it needs! I hope that helps
Same here :( If I try to add protein, it seems like it's too much, then add moisture, then that's too much, etc. No happy medium. It's pretty humid where I live so I'm wondering if it'll get better once Fall gets here.
@@elizabethcarroll8526 yeah that's pretty much what I go through all the time. I tried something new yesterday and the high protein made my curls much tighter and springy but it felt so producty and sticky that my hair got all roughed up very easily. I can't win!
@@000snow000 yes! I tried to add a little more protein and my hair did that, too! If my hair doesn't improve once the temperature goes down, I'm going back to my old shampoo and conditioner and just using the new techniques that I've learned!

I just love the way you explain everything and how much effort you put into your videos! 💕 they're always keeping me entertained and they're educational at the same time. Can't wait to see your continued growth and blossom into a huge star.
I’m so so grateful for this video and all the hard-work you put into it with the note pads, the ingredients list, the checklist for us to screenshot and for making this video interesting. Thank you so much Mell♥️♥️♥️
So informative! My hair is not curly but watching your videos I realize that hair care for any type is about observation and applying products that your hair need at the moment. Thanks!
I would like to see videos on “curly hair brushes 101” and “how to pick the right hair straightener for curly hair”(even though straightening is not good for curly hair)
You guys are doing an awesome job with editing your videos! Being a video editor myself and a girl with wavy/ curly hair, I've watched tons of videos about curly hair and your channel is one of the best!
Hi Mell, this was an amazing video as always!😍 I would also love a video about the differences of styling brushes like Denman, Behairfulbrush, Tangle Teezer... or no brush at all! And I just feel like different hairtypes need different brushes? This would be really helpful! Greetings from Germany!!!🇩🇪❤️
You are the curly hair queen. I recommend your channel to all CGM newbies !!!!! Even tho you don’t do CGM- the education you provide is on point and reliable and REALLY helpful to the CG community!!!!
I honestly found it easiest to figure it out by buying one moisturizing conditioner and one with lots of proteins and trying them both. The one with all sorts of proteins made my hair feel and look better than the mostly moisturizing conditioner. I had my answer.
@AgathaVelvet For moisture I tried a few: Hask coconut conditioner, purezero coconut moisturizing conditioner, and a few others. For protein conditioners, I used the soCozy kids curl conditioner, and the purezero biotin conditioner. Both did WONDERS for my hair so i incorporated proteins into my stylers as well. I use the SGX 10 in 1 leave in and the hairitage curl cream. Then I use the biotera alcohol free styling gel
I am SO glad I came across your channel. I started my natural hair journey a few months ago (not like anyone was going to be seeing my hair after lockdown was announced!) and quickly realised there's many elements of the CGM that aren't for me. Since following your tips and tricks (ESPECIALLY for finger coiling and diffusing) the last couple of weeks I am finally starting to find my groove with my routine. Thank you so much!
@@ManesByMell Seriously! Thats is beyond wonderful. I wish you did a video of all your very best favorite products for either protein wash or moisture wash. I think i have almost 10 different lines of products already. Is it good to switch them around??
I'm learning so much about my hair like so many I have never had a good curly hair day until your tips and tricks. My daughter (9m) can't crawl fast enough when she hears your voice that's how much I watch your videos! Thank you for preparing me to give my curly head baby girl a good hair day!
I’ve watched this video twice (I get so excited waiting for Texture Tuesday). It’s very informative and helpful. I still don’t really understand my hair though. 😭 I’m fairly sure I’m low porosity but it gets over moisturised so easily. The elasticity is good to fairly long stretch before breaking. But high porosity is supposed to be prone to over moisturising. It takes a while to get wet and is shiny, which makes me think low porosity. I feel like I need a phd in hair to understand my own silly strands.
But does it absorb Water when you spray it? Mine is low porosity and it's pretty obvious cause the water won't get absorbed unless I press it. Tricky thing to me was understanding if it's medium or low porosity. But given what you wrote, I'd advise you to use less products. Test which one (and if) you can take one off
I stumbled across you on tiktok, literally yesterday and have watched hrs of your videos on youtube , learning so much about how to care for my hair down to the small nitty gritty details that I don’t even think about. I went straight to looking at my products after this video and noticed very little with protein ingredients. I was just wondering, how many protein ingredients should I look for roughly in a product? And the chart that you gave as a rough guide, can it be any mix and match of products as long as it’s an equal amount of both moisture and protein? I hope that made sense! (I have high porosity - i believe) . Thank you so much for making these videos, I cannot wait to practice everything I have watched and see the progress xxx
OH YAY I'm so glad the tiktok algorithm led you to me!! The higher up on the ingredient list, the more protein will be in the product. there doesn/t have to be many but with high porosity, the more the merrier! Thanks for being here! I hope all this info helps xoxo
I finally have my routine!! But I can always use some more tips. My high porosity hair loves protein, but not to much. I have protein in my deep conditioner and in my gel. My hair feels and looks amazing after I found the right balance, thank you Mel, because you helped me a lot!! 🥰
This is one of the best videos ever! Everyone is different and this really helps to know your hair...so many in and out factors can influence your hair so it's helpfull when you know what your hair needs at the moment. Thanks!!!
For the first time in my life, I can actually look at the ingredients and know what they do! Thanks, I think this video is the best I have ever seen about hair care.
For the elasticity test, do we pull taut and then stretch a single DRY strand of hair or should we be doing this when wet? Hope you see this! This was a very helpful video.
Wet in my case. When I did it dry it didn’t stretch at all, just broke. when I did it wet it stretched almost 3 inches and didn’t return back to normal.
@@racheljordan3876 this is the case for me too. which got me so confused. i’m still confused tbh lol. but im going to check my ingredients list for all my products and see what i need more of to be more sure. the trial and error sucks 😭

You and your seester are curly gurl goals!! I started my natural journey a couple years ago and now I convinced my seester to do the same. WE LOVE YOUR CHANNEL so THANK YOU!!
I have a hard time determining what my porosity is and whether I’m using too much protein or moisture. I’m definitely going to use this video and hopefully start being able to balance my routine a bit more. I’m really hoping to get my hair back to its healthiest state since I’ve never bleached or dyed it but I do have to wet it every day for work so I might suffer from over-moisturized hair.
Mell: "I feel like I wanted to add more" Yes please. A part two would be nice. Normally manes by Mell are light, fun and exciting but every now and again she puts her foot down and says u all are gonna learn today. Even though in patches of the video I may not have fully understood everything. Mell always has a way of delivering the moral of the story I could be wrong but I think I have the gist of it. Protien and moisture balance is a tricky business and whilst investing in the right products and understanding the science is important these must be complimented by time and patience Side note: I don't know what was more perfect that tie dye shirt's white outline or all the on screen aids, the transitions and the graphics
I think I’ve finally got my routine down. I’m currently using the not your mothers cream and mousse, and I love it! I got my mom hooked on the brand as well, she loves the Volumizing hair spray from nym. ❤️
I remember when tacos made Tuesdays awesome..now it’s You and these fabulous videos! Thanks for always being here every week to help us out! Oh, and where did you find that cute pineapple? I need it.
The amount of screenshots in my camera roll from your videos is borderline stalkerish. Lol I’m learning so much about my hair, I’ve been doing this all wrong! 😭
I would LOVE a product guide! I.e. major products sorted by type (wash, condition, mask, leave-in, cream, gel, mousse, etc), Protein (type & strong/medium/gentle classification), moisturizers (ingredient & heavy/medium/light classification), etc. I have a chemistry background - would love to do it myself but I don't have the resources to do it large scale 😅 Anyway, love you Mell! Amazing video.
Question! When we’re determining what problems our hair has, (dry, brittle, oily, frizzy) what state should our hair be in? Washed and dry? Wet with no product? Or would it be dry with product and can still identify these problems?
Revisited this video today because ive been having a few issues with my low porosity hair over the last year. I thought I had been getting moisturizing products to help it, but realized after re-watching that almost all of them have protein! Swapping in non-protein products soon and hoping to see some improvements!
Mel: "The first source of moisture is from your nutrition... stay hydrated" Me: - hits pause, goes to drink a bottle of water and proceeds to stare at my hair in the mirror, waiting for it to improve -
Hey there, i really don’t know what to do. My hair is long and is slightly wavy. When i brush my hair it easily becomes straight but it is frizzy and i look like electroduced sheep. But when i try scrunching and all it has waves but they fall off immediately and my hair looks like a mess after. Is there someone who can relate and maybe offer some advice? 🥺 Also thank you for your videos they helped so much. ❤️
You're over moisturizing. When your hair can't hold the shape, it's too heavy with moisture. Use more protein, less moisture, think about a lightweight haircut with layers so your hair can take the shape. The top layer may weigh the hair beneath it down. Try the strand test. Stretch a strand of hair and see how it behaves. She explained it very well. And you may wanna use lightweight products as well. No gel, little oil, no butter masks (maybe once a month), very little conditioner... And cleanse your hair with shampoo that has sulfates in it. Wavy hair tends to built up pretty easily. So we need to clean the hair. Hope that helps.
Try the Shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie! i have really long hair and when i scrunch with no product the waves fall out as soon as it dries but with the smoothie it really brings them out!
Ummm...when is Mel going to offer online consultations? We need some love in the states since I think Canada is still closed to us and stalking is frowned upon 😄
Lots of IMPORTANT info!! Thanks!! Does the weather affects on either one of them? I mean If I live in HOT tropical ( beach) weather could I probably need more moisture or protein? And what if I go a lot to the beach? Its summer and... beach life 🤷🏼♀️😂 Gracias again!! Great videos!!
Ever since I have found your channel I have followed the moisture/protein balance and my hair has improved tremendously!! Thanks to you and your sister
Mell!!! I've focused on getting my hair back to a healthy state, now i finally got there, but still why does healthy hair won't hold my curls? (colored but healthy hair) my waves dissapeared progressively since i started coloring it and i follow every step you say, i has made an improvement but nota enough
Thank you for sharing this information!! So many people talk about having protein/moisture as a part of your routine and how too much can damage your hair, but not enough people explain it in a way that makes sense!! I'm definitely going to start paying more attention to what my hair needs by using the tips you provided!
Hey, I’ve got a question about Hair Masks and Conditioners. When should I use these products in my wash day? Conditioner or Mask first? Should I use both or just either the mask or the conditioner?Should always apply a deep conditioning mask (or just every now and then)? I suppose I have pretty normal (medium porosity) hair. Thank you very much ❤️
Hey! Hair dresser here! With most masks you want to apply your mask first, runde and apply conditioner after. This is because shampoo (which we use first) opens the hair cuticle. This means your hair mask will be “absorbed” better by the hair shaft. After the hair mask you then apply conditioner, which will close the hair cuticle again. Of course sometimes a mask can close the cuticle as well, so you won’t need to use conditioner, but this depends on the brand, so read the label of the one you are using. Some masks you can use before shampooing, and again this comes down to the specific mask you are using, so again, read your labels. Hope this helped 😄
With normal hair you don't need many deep conditioning treatments (mask deep conditioner or treatments are all deep conditioning just diff names) the standard advise of one a week does not apply and will overload your hair so try once a month or every 3 months mabey even just twice a year. I wash my hair once a week and use a mask once a month and i have bleach fine porous hair if i deep condition more often i can't style my hair its to limp_soft it won't hold the curls but if i don't use them often my hair tangles to much and is dry. Its all trail and error experiment make a geuss after the elasticity strand test and write it down and make a plan keep it up for a few weeks or until you notice it doesn't go well. Write down what doesn't feels good about your hir and adjust from there ann write down the new plan so you can always figure out what went wrong good luck
This is the first video I’ve ever seen that truly explains the differences in elasticity and porosity. I am a new subscriber because of this video! I’m new to the curly hair world and you have some of the best content I’ve come across thus far.
High porosity low moisture - i literally don’t know what MORE moisture my hair needs I use prepoo, conditioner, deep conditioner, leave in, and some dry oil after literally every single time I wash it 😭
Thank you for this video!! I just started my curly journey and I quickly became overwhelmed with all the terminology and figuring out my hair type. Your videos are so educational!
I had to come back and leave a comment - I have been *so confused* trying to get my hair to look healthy and not frizzy for 20 years, and have tried *every product* and nothing worked. I was slathering it with oil, using expensive treatments - nothing worked! I could barely touch it without it frizzing up uncontrollably. After watching your video, turns out I have low porosity hair, I switched products, stopped using coconut oil and voila! Within one day, my hair looks better than it *ever has*. You're a genius, thank you so much for your wisdom, finally life can be easy!! X
Manes by Mell hi mell, I was wondering if you could help me. Ever since I’ve been trying to take care of my curly hair, I’ve become more and more frustrated by it still being frizzy. I use the Shea moisture hair mask for protein and not your mothers curl talk gel and hair thickener and kinky moves hair cream along with herbal essences mousse in type 3. I recently went to a hair stylist and she cut my hair along with using avedas shampoo and condition along with their hair styling prep product and hair cream and my curls turned out amazing with little to no frizz at all. You’d imagine how devastated I was when I used my own products and saw how frizzy and less tight my curls looked than when a hair stylist cut my hair and styled it. I nearly cried because I was so frustrated. If you can help me, that would be great. I’m so desperate for my curls to look the way they did when my hair stylist did it. Thanks and love ur videos ❤️

I watched her VERYYYY first video and she said THROW THOSE OUT! 😬
Specially since some of those brands have released new products. I would definitely watch a video on those!
@Maria B whoaaa, which one?
I have literally never had a good curl day. It's always either curly and crunchy/dry/rough or limp and soft :(
Oh no! Sorry to hear that! Make sure you listen to your hair by testing the elasticity and porosity to make sure you treat it for what it needs! I hope that helps
I feel your pain. More bad hair days than good 🤷♀️
Same here :( If I try to add protein, it seems like it's too much, then add moisture, then that's too much, etc.
These types of videos stress me out and make me feel like I’m doing everything wrong but I need to learn to get better 😔
Mel: When do you eat?
Me: Whenever I'm awake.
Mel: When you are hungry or malnourished.
Me: Ooops.
Lmaooooooooooo relatable
I said all the time😂
Right!!
You are the Queen of Curls! I don’t know what I would do without your incredible work that you put into your videos! I mean the charts are just amazing! Thank you so so much 🌞
I really need this cause even tho my curly hair is pretty healthy I think I’m lacking something yet don’t know what. Thank you like always!♥️😭
Contact @the.curl.garden on Instagram she redid my entire routine & now my hair is balanced 😁
yeah same it’s like my hair would fall into the protein overload but it has traits of moisture overload i’m so confused mu
C'est le video le plus génial que tu as fait :) Good job !!!!
Perfect time, I just got a refresh spray that has protein and have been trying to balance it out.
Your channel is a miracle for the analytical curly girl. God bless you.
You guys are doing an awesome job with editing your videos! Being a video editor myself and a girl with wavy/ curly hair, I've watched tons of videos about curly hair and your channel is one of the best!
Thank you!!! My seester does the editing and I do the researching! We make a great team😂❤️
Mell, the info u provide in this video is just insane! Thank you so much for taking the time and patience. Wish u all the best
Hi Mell, this was an amazing video as always!😍 I would also love a video about the differences of
styling brushes like Denman, Behairfulbrush, Tangle Teezer... or no brush at all!
Which 2 did you buy?
@AgathaVelvet For moisture I tried a few: Hask coconut conditioner, purezero coconut moisturizing conditioner, and a few others. For protein conditioners, I used the soCozy kids curl conditioner, and the purezero biotin conditioner. Both did WONDERS for my hair so i incorporated proteins into my stylers as well. I use the SGX 10 in 1 leave in and the hairitage curl cream. Then I use the biotera alcohol free styling gel
@@maraw8658 , thank you. Good strategy you had! I want to buy all new products, but don't want to waste my $. Need healthy hair asap. Lol.
I wish you had a website So I could reference all this later when I'm shopping or going through my wash day
Website is under construction but coming soon!!

@@ManesByMell
Seriously! Thats is beyond wonderful. I wish you did a video of all your very best favorite products for either protein wash or moisture wash. I think i have almost 10 different lines of products already. Is it good to switch them around??
YAY WTF
Test which one (and if) you can take one off
most informative and easy to retain curly video I’ve ever watched. I’ve been searching for this info everywhere!
hey mell, can you work with low density hair one day? i think it’d be pretty interesting
Yes, please!
Oh yeah! Please!
This is hands down the most complete hair video I've seen yet. Just amazing, so much information.Well done

I recently found out I have cury hair! Your method has TRANSFORMED my life and the way I treat and love my hair
And once again, Mell saves us (my hair and I) 🎉 gurl, I don't know what we would do without you
Does anyone else struggle to do the stretch test? My hair is so fine I can barely get a grip on it
Yep. I did the test & still have no idea lol🤷
Me too! It seems to slide out between my fingers. But if I use my nails to help hold it tight it snaps. Anyone have tips?
This is the absolute best video I've ever found on this. You are so thorough!! Thank you so so much!!
I really love the editing on this one. Such a great job and it makes all the information so much easier to understand!
I always once in while come back to this Video
Love your educational Videos!
Thanks!!!
WHY DO I FEEL LIKE I HAVE BOTH PROTEIN AND MOISTURE OVERLOAD???
For the first time in my life, I can actually look at the ingredients and know what they do! Thanks, I think this video is the best I have ever seen about hair care.
For the elasticity test, do we pull taut and then stretch a single DRY strand of hair or should we be doing this when wet? Hope you see this! This was a very helpful video.
Dry I think
Wet in my case. When I did it dry it didn’t stretch at all, just broke. when I did it wet it stretched almost 3 inches and didn’t return back to normal.
@@racheljordan3876 this is the case for me too. which got me so confused. i’m still confused tbh lol. but im going to check my ingredients list for all my products and see what i need more of to be more sure. the trial and error sucks 😭
I have been straightening my hair since I was 14ish, now I'm 32, I found you somehow, and now I have been wear my hair naturally for 1 week! And I LOVE it! I have spiral curls in my hair, I never knew I had! Your videos are so helpful ♥️♥️ your now My Mane Girl Mell
Mel, this is just what I needed to finally understand moisture/protein balance. I'll put it into practice! Thank you 💜
This was so informative thank you!
LOVE this video.. just what i needed! I have video recommendations though....is it possible if you could do a series of manes by mell fans that send you a text of their curly hair routine or a video of it that you can react to and give us some advice on that too.....thx for reading this love your channel🤗
Wow! That’s an amazing idea!!
Hi can i know thé résult of following her steps ?
That "Stronger" scared the shit out of me 🤣🤣🤣 i wasn't expecting that. Keeping us on our toes I see.
My hair only curls at the front, and the back is just flat, the slightest wave. Idk if I still have damage or the hard water in my house lol

Mell: "I feel like I wanted to add more"
Yes please. A part two would be nice.
Normally manes by Mell are light, fun and exciting but every now and again she puts her foot down and says u all are gonna learn today.
Even though in patches of the video I may not have fully understood everything. Mell always has a way of delivering the moral of the story
I could be wrong but I think I have the gist of it. Protien and moisture balance is a tricky business and whilst investing in the right products and understanding the science is important these must be complimented by time and patience
Side note: I don't know what was more perfect that tie dye shirt's white outline or all the on screen aids, the transitions and the graphics
Best on RUclips for curly ! I love you and Amanda! Remind me of me and my sister!
I think I’ve finally got my routine down. I’m currently using the not your mothers cream and mousse, and I love it! I got my mom hooked on the brand as well, she loves the Volumizing hair spray from nym. ❤️
Amazing!! I can’t wait to try NYM when it comes to Canada 😍😍 one day hopefully soon haha
So it's "not your mother's" but you got it to your mother, that's hilarious to me
How do you like the cream from them? I want to try it, what type of curls do you have?
Neidy A I have 3a curls, the cream defines and it has some hold. I like to use it with their mousse, but you could use the cream alone.

Results?

My hair has gone from oily to super dry thanks to pregnancy and your videos have saved my curls. Your videos are so informative!
@@MonaHerSelfM Thank you very much, i really appreciate that you responded. I will definitely try your tips.
Try the Shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie! i have really long hair and when i scrunch with no product the waves fall out as soon as it dries but with the smoothie it really brings them out!

Lots of IMPORTANT info!! Thanks!! Does the weather affects on either one of them? I mean If I live in HOT tropical ( beach) weather could I probably need more moisture or protein? And what if I go a lot to the beach? Its summer and... beach life 🤷🏼♀️😂
Gracias again!!
I've been in and out of curly hair groups for the past couple years. Thanks for making this so simple.
Is it me or are Mell's videos getting extra awesome during Covid times? Silver linings CurlFriends! ;)

Thank you very much ❤️
I also want to know lol
Contact @the.curl.garden on Instagram. She was able to completely revamp my routine & answer all my questions 😁
