Mell, you should make a curly hair app, where people go in and find their routine and product recommendations according to their hair type, length, etc… along with various styling tutorials and other tips for their specific hair
I'm a nurse, and I'm soooo glad you talked about no poo and the scalp. Our scalp is skin, and it needs to be cleansed regularly. The purpose of shampoo is to cleanse the scalp, to remove/prevent pore blockage (from sebum, sweat, shedding skin, dirt, and product), and, most importantly, to prevent infection. Thank you, Mell!
I agree. After doing co washing for a few months, I had so much seborrheic dermatitis and then had to go on medicated shampoo every day for a month which absolutely wrecked my hair. Never again!
Humans existed for a looooooong time - millennia - without shampoo or soap. Some still do and without skin conditions. Grooming is still a thing. Animals still exist in the wild with beautiful coats and no shampoo. Your house cat will have a beautiful glossy coat if you feed her correctly, not because you shampoo her.
@@sarahrosen4985that is true but for most people it wouldnt be worth it going through the "no poo" phase where you just let your hair get oily and dirty then hope for the best. it might work for a few, but for most it would just be a safer bet using shampoo since theres nothing wrong with it in the first place if you use it correctly.
@@sarahrosen4985We also existed without medicine, houses, decontaminated living areas, hand washing before surgery, etc. The creation of these haircare measures is proof of their demand, not the other way around. Clearly the "au naturel" way of haircare doesn't work for everyone, and definitely not enough people to stand the test of time. If you think you're smarter than several thousand dermatologists and trichologists working together to understand the human body and health measures necessary to take care of skin & hair; then you've clearly underestimated its complexity and overestimated your own knowledge.
Yes! My whole life (38 yrs old), I was told I had thick hair simply because it was curly. It's not! It's fine! Learning this from Mel has been so helpful! I stopped using the heavy Shea butter products, and heavy conditioners, and my hair is so thankful. 🙏
This!!!!! Everyone tell me I have thick hair. But I don’t know if it’s coarse or fine. My mom has straight fine hair, and my aunt has extremely coarse corkscrew curls. But I don’t know what my hair is. It’s curly, but it doesn’t feel like my moms, and it doesn’t feel like my aunt.
@DannieGirl24 Do you mind sharing the products you switched to? I've been using shea moisture for a while now but their conditioners are really weighing down my curls so I need to make a switch but I don't know where to start.
@@Zie731avoid Shea butter like the pest in any form. My hair does well with coconut instead. I have found treseme curls does wonders to my hair as well as avoiding thick heavy styling gels (I use mousse)
Especially when it comes to type 4 hair (the type most associated with Black ppl)! Just because it's the most curly doesn't mean it's thick! I had to learn that my hair is fine and also, gave up the heavy products.
I used to have a very minimal hair routine and my hair looked gorgeous. Then when I started to adding and a whole bunch of extra steps and products my hair got so bad in my curl pattern went away. It's been about a year since I went back to my minimal routine and my hair is finally getting back to normal.
It truly felt like a battle when I began to try and brace my curl pattern. I love it very much, but curly girls usually make things far too complicated and it takes quite the trial and error to find the right balance
Dang, Mel, I thought I had my routine down...but this video put everything into perspective! I was doing the MOST when I need to be doing the LEAST! I can't wait for wash day now! Thank youuuuu! 🙏
My toddler has fine curly hair… mine is nearly perfectly straight. I’m here because there’s no way I’m raising them not knowing anything about how to to keep their hair healthy. So far, I’ve been avoiding all the “don’t” techniques and doing all the “do” techniques ^_^ (Including only doing an all done scrunch)
I destroyed my hair while going curly girl. If your hair is beautiful with sulfates/silicones, please don't change it. My hair went from 3a/3b, curling from root, bright and medium to thick to a dry mess, 2b/2c/3a, fine/thinned and shedding like crazy in the 7 years I was curly girl. Long story short, I was dianosed with alopecia androgenetic, but didn't accept it. I realized some things about my routine and finally understood it was the curly girl all together. I left it behind 3 years ago and my hair is mostly back to its previous state (except for curling from root).
Hello! I think you should definitely do a K18 or Olaplex no.3 treatment to repair all your damage. Also look for products with keratin, amino acids, everything that says Hydrolyzed will help you.I think you should be able to find in your country the brand Trust my sister wich has products especially for your porosity.
@@lizuca0199 Hello 👋 thank you for the answer. It is really hard to get any answers, and advices. Olaplex is possible to find here, but I haven't heard about this other brand. Will try to find 😊 Thanks again 👍
@Sanja Radoman If you have high porosity hair I think you could benefit from using an serum\light oil in the ends to protect them and If it has keratin\protein is even better.I think you have DM stores in Serbia and from DM I would recommend the Traumlocken line and it is for curls.I have the oil and I use it between washes,to preserve the hydration, there is a spray to refresh the curls, the shampoo is also good, great to use once a week to clean all the build up.
Mel, I’ve been on my curly hair journey since 2020 and following you since the beginning. Lately I’ve been dealing with a lot of frizz. Watching this video made me realize that I had strayed from the basics and product wasn’t the problem, it was the process. I was not using enough water when styling. I returned to styling wet and problem solved. A review of the basics is always a great idea! Thanks for the reminder.
When I go to a hair appointment, I never know what to ask for in terms of enhancing my natural hair. I have very thick and wavy/curly hair and no one seems to know how to deal with it. In the past I've gone to hair dressers where they looked visibly intimidated and they end up thinning my hair like crazy. A video on what to ask for instead of thinning it out would be great! :)
Yes! I would really like for a video on this. I am like you, thick wavy hair. I can totally relate when it comes to going to a hair salon, seems as if no one wants to deal with you.
Salon stylists are always surprised by how thick my hair is when they go to cut it because the curl is 2C and I tend to grow it out. Volume is never a problem. My brother's is so thick that it stands straight up until it's almost 6 inches long, so he lives in a buzz. Seriously, his hair won't part because it's so thick.
I honestly have learned so much from you that I walk down the shampoo isle at Ulta and tell the curly girls to tune in. Your show should be a requirement for all in cosmetology school. I don’t know how many bad haircuts I have had, especially when they tell me curly hair is just a texture. The last person cut my layers by a difference of 2 inches on opposite sides. No one is allowed to touch it now. 😂😂
Hi Karana thank you so much for your kind words ❤️ I’ve had people share that they DID watch my videos in cosmo class and it’s such an honour. Always happy to help you understand your hair, thank you for sharing the word❤️
I’ve had a similar cut experience more than once. The layers attempted (with those awful shears) ended up being two distinct frizzy chunks of long and mid length. It was awful! I wish I could find someone who knows how to cut curls. Any tips on finding those people??
@@rtracy1216 I had the same issue...first, I moved but traveled 40 minutes to keep seeing my stylist, but then after Covid she stopped cutting hair and I had to find someone new...scary. I just looked for curlies who had hair that I liked and asked. I also asked local people on Nextdoor for recommendations. I got lucky and found a stylist who is curly trained. Once, I had to let someone else in the salon cut my hair because my new stylist got sick. The receptionist assured me this other stylist was trained under mine. Well, she did some thinning technique that left the back of my head in a tangled frizzy mess for a few months. Never doing that again!
@@christinec3170 Update: I found one and it’s exquisite! Looked up curly dry cuts in my area and found one girl, about an hour away but sooooo worth it. She also does a full “first-cut” apt with appropriate product recommendations and styling instructions. My hair has NEVER been happier! She even gifted me a denman brush 😮
@@rtracy1216 Yay! That's great!! I just got my hair cut last week with my new stylist. My hair was getting long with dry ends. This week my hair is so happy 😊 I just need to do a deep conditioning treatment to keep it in good shape. Enjoy your new stylist and denman! 💕
I loved this video so much but I just wanted to clarify on the twisting the hair while deep conditioning. I know the reason why people with thick or tight curly hair do this is so their hair doesn’t tangle when letting the deep conditioner sit. Wouldn’t recommend it for lose curls or people who don’t have lots of hair but if you feel like your hairs to much to handle I would recommend braiding twisting or just sectioning the hair with clips to deep condition while letting it sit
this is a great point! I was confused at first bc I always do some twist when i deep condition, I do find it tangles if I don’t. So yes it might not help my pattern but it does help it stay detangled and hydrated, as that is the point
Thank you so much for this video! I have naturally wavy hair and this simplified, well explained process makes me feel less intimidated and actually want to wear my hair in its natural form again. I've been straightening it for about 18 years and it feels like it's time to embrace the wave.
Thank you Mel! Would you please consider doing a video about women over fifty with curly hair. I fall in this group. My hair was wavy and has gotten curlier with age. I’m graying naturally and the gray is soft and curly as well. Celtic-Germanic roots here. Products are overwhelming to me! Appreciate your videos!
@@ManesByMell do you add oil after leave-in? I’ve read some places that say yes, but I’ve also seen some places that say oil forms a barrier making it harder for the hold/styling products to work. Also - does it make a difference if I’m doing the Olaplex 0, 3, 4/4c, and 5?
@@rmeredithm mell has a video on this, I can’t think of it off the top of my head but definitely at the END END of your routine, it does make a barrier. I think the video was about the styling process. I think it’s the video that she references in this one.
@@larissajohnson2581 ya I know most people add it after drying to scrunch out the gel cast. I’m just wondering if the olaplex routine is diff? Can the oil penetrate thru all the product??
OMG, thank you. Ever since the pandemic, I lost interest in maintaining my hair and realized that my hair is still curly despite the low maintenance. Thank you for validating, because a lot of the things mentioned here are stuff I stopped doing when my country went into quarantine.
You are so spot-on! I was actually born with straight hair and did not acquire my curly hair until my early 50s. It was a horrid curl pattern and very loose. I would say 1c. I even went and saw a dermatologist who specializes in hair about why all of a sudden my hair was Curly, and he said that this happened sometimes during that change of a woman's life. So, learning how to deal with curly hair was a brand new thing for me to learn. It's taken me several years and lots, lots, and lots of different products and trials and errors. I should mention here that I have very thin, low porosity and now have 2A 2B curly hair. And I finally love it! Every single thing that you said in this video is 100% percent true. I only wish I would have found you 6 years ago when I started learning about how to deal with my new curls. Men, ladies, LISTEN to her because this is exactly what 6 years of hair fails brought me to. This is my exact program, and my hair looks so flipping great all the time. And I don't spend an hour finger curling, scrunching, etc.
me, for the past 27 years of my life, think I have frizzy and dry fine straight hair that are uncontrollable my WHOLE life (curly hair/ wavy hair is not common in our region). Finding your channel changed my life. Although I still haven't found the perfect product for my hair, I found my hair way healthier after applying some extra leave-in conditioner. Thank you for sharing all these valuable information with us!!! I love your channel!!!
Same but I'm 44 and now learning 😅 I had curls as kid but my mother always brushed them out when my hair was dry and told me I outgrew them as I got older. My whole life I thought it's fine frizzy dry straight hair that will never be really pretty or controllable. Since a few days I'm following the curly/ waivy routine and I'm excited to see what happens in the next weeks and months
Doesn’t matter what they say, you can control your hair routine. Try her tips. God loves you. Romans 8:38-39. You can cast all your anxieties on God because He cares about you. 1 Peter 5:7.
People are always going to tell you stuff about you that you already solidly know. Only you know about your body. Learning to love your hair is so important
Hi Mell, my name is Aliyaa and i live in South Africa. I love watching your videos and i cant explain how much you have helped my curls. Please please please do a video on what you would recommend for the climate i live in, as Durban is so hot and my curls need you. Keep posting as i literally wait for your videos weekly. Keep on studying and sharing with the curly community. You will never know how much you are contributing to us all. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Dear Mel, I'm a 64yr old woman who has tried for years to get this hair on right track. Finding your podcasts has changed my stress level n my hair. Thank you so very much! If you ever consider video consults I'll be in line. 💛💜
Omg i have asked people to not use the thinning sheers and mentioned that it gives me more frizz and split ends but i have had so many stylists who deny that that i just stopped going to get my hair cut. One of them was actually a teacher at a beauty school. 😖 The lesson he gave the student was some people say whatever but they don't know what they want .
You've inspired me to try one last time to get my wave pattern to show through. My hair has always been (since puberty) fine/frizzy/wavy and it has never looked very good with the curly girl method. The one time it looked amazing was when I used the VO5 vivacious curls that has long since been discontinued. If this doesn't work I'm getting a digital perm so I don't have to deal with tedious heat styling or a frizzy, limp, lifeless mess. 🤞🏽
It would be great if you could do a video like this but for natural/transitioning gray. Besides cutting it off, how can we properly treat the good new hair and the old over-treated hair. Really, just anything that applies to natural gray curly hair. Wouldn't ask except you make a lot of sense 😁
I agree we need more gray info. I had never dyed my hair, was trying to get curls with the CGM for 2.5 years when I did a favor to help a young guy finish cosmetology school during COVID. He wanted to treat me to a whole hair makeover and I let him use permanent color to add some lowlights that also made my remaining brown hair more gray. He used semi permanent violet color and silver color. My own white hair provided the highlights. He cut it and blew it out and curled it. I learned a couple of things. No matter what, my natural curls (2B, 2C) provide long lasting curls compared to even professional heat curls. My heat curls did not last the day. My own curls will still be able to be refreshed on day 3, and will be waves until I shampoo somewhere in days 4 - 7. So, don’t fight my curls! He said my hair was coarse, because it was gray/white. He gave me some conditioner for softening gray hair. It does not help me with curls, so I save it for when I might just blow dry straight. My hair hardly took any of the violet color. Now I know I can’t get colorful hair with semi-permanent dye. If I want a candy color, I will need to use colored conditioner that comes off on your clothes. My permanent dyed hair lost much of its curl for several months, so if I want curls and waves, no color for me. Mell, does this make sense to you? My biggest question is if my white/gray hair is likely to be coarse? I have always had frizzy, fly-away hair that weighed nothing. Now, I just have less of it, but it is white. Using methods like in today’s video, I get some waves and some spiral curls. I can brush out my curls for day 2 and get some bouncy waves. Or I can refresh even with just water and get spirals back in some places. I wish I knew my hair was curly 30 or 40 or 50 years ago!
I just continued with my same routine as I grew out. Did a couple of chops along the way to speed up the process. I guess it depends on what your coloring routine was like, but I focused on the new growth rather than worrying about the part that was eventually going to get cut off. The biggest difference was that new growth was less porous, so I needed lighter conditioner/fewer emollients.
@@Silverhaired59 silver/gray is not automatically more coarse! I still have fine to medium hair, but I need more humectants and fewer emollients! I think silver hair is generally drier, just like aging skin.
@Silverhaired59 me too. My mother always combed it straight and never taught me how to work with my curls. I'm now 50 and embracing my waves and curls. It's completely different methods I don't know what to do. I started with OGX shampoo and conditioner for curly hair. It feels so much healthier and everyone loves it. I'd like to enhance the curls more though. And letting my grey grow in may change things, but I'm still learning. I was surprised at the change a different shampoo/ cond.could make. Leave in conditioner after the shower and always sleeping with my hair pulled above/off me on the pillow now it curls/waves all the way to the root.
Mell I just found you on my journey to have healthier hair and embrace my curls and I'm so glad I did!!! I've avoided the curly girl method as it seemed to extreme and felt lost in all the advice videos but since finding you I feel like I have the best guidance out there. Thank you for your content and continuing to help us on our hair journeys!
Hi Mel, it’s been almost 1yr since I started watching your channel and I can’t thank you enough for all the information I have learned on how to care for my curls!! It’s my first time posting. I ditched my hairdresser in February 2022 after she wouldn’t stop using the thinning shears even after I told her I felt they were affecting my curls. She tried to tell me it was my hormones and I almost believed her. Thank you for posting about this because since I stopped going to that hair dresser and found a curly hair specialist, and I started my curly hair journey thanks to your videos, I’m falling in love with my curls again!! You have been an inspiration and I look forward to continue to watch all your content! Every time I get a compliment on my curls I tell them about your channel. So keep them coming 😊❤ Thanks so much!!
Finally someone not only delivering attainable curl maintenance but also explaining the facts through scientific education to back it up and not just an influencer trying to sell me something and saying obsessed every 3 seconds. THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! ❤
This was awesome! I have a lot I need to change. Thanks so much for this content! I didn't start trying to style my curly hair until I was in my 60s and I have been incorporating several unnecessary steps. Always learning!
Just want to thank you for helping this 65 yr old curly hair lady. I finally know how to handle my curls to make them look nice because of your videos. I follow this video routine and love it. Now I have to decide if I want to continue to dye roots or go gray. Haha. Always something. Your hair is just stunning. Love your curls Nice job. Thanks
Mell, i can’t thank you enough for making these video’s. Started my journey Almost 2 months ago and for the first time ever, i haven’t washed my hair for Almost a week. Didn’t have to refresh for 4 Days. And this video proves i’m doing everything right ❤
Great tips! 🥰 But It definitely also depends on your curl size & texture. I’m not sure about loose curly heads, but many tight curly heads can’t just use oils to detangle their hair before shampoo. Especially when they use mild shampoos, it won’t get the entire oils out. It needs water & a slippery product to effectively get shed hairs out, if we don’t want to detangle after shampoo with conditioner. So many don’t just use conditioners bec they want to condition dirty hair, they want the slip to detangle. The reason some do gel before cream is that gel is water based & controls frizz. Creams/leave-ins contain oils/butters seal hair and don’t give hold. So many tight curly heads don’t get the maximum definition if they apply cream first. So all curls aren’t the same.❤
Great video. Glad I stumbled across your channel. I’m a guy with long, coarse, curly, red hair and I love it. I have been trying to figure out how to reduce frizz and dryness. I just thought my hair was my hair and there wasn’t much I could do. Watching your tutorials and step by step process with great tutorials and explanations gives me hope that I can get my locks looking luscious. Thank you 😊
Great video! I especially enjoyed inserting previous video content as a reference. Sometimes creators say to go look at the other video, etc. The way you inserted the clip makes me want to watch it more than just reference it. Lastly, listing how many products you used was helpful. I'm sure curly girls appreciated your advice and styling steps ✨️
I'm trying to stop straightening my hair and love my curls, so I've been watching a lot of these videos. It's hard when you've doing so for over 10 years and feel ugly with curly hair. I always see curly hair routines and think woah they're so lucky to have beautiful curls unlike mine. I saw your childhood pictures and started crying, your hair is similar to mine. It's the first time I ACTUALLY want to drop the heat, get a fresh cut and learn to style and love my natural hair. I understood that my hair is simply damaged and my curls just need some love and styling. Thank you so much Mell, may God bless you, and I hope I'll find the right products and have healthy looking curls soon.
Always upfront and on point! Again, love when a creator can be honest like you are. Some creators videos just feel like a commercial, even when unsponsored lol. Keep it up Mel ✌️✨
I was about to do the big chop-glad I saw this & reminded us of how awesome Eva NYC products are excellent & affordable! Oh God Bless ya Mel! Thank goodness for you Curly Queen!
Mel and Amanda, thank you so much for being my ride or die curly girls. You have helped me master my routine and every single time I have a question I no longer go to google it's Manes by Mell!
I'm so glad I caught what you said about thinning shears! A temporary hair dresser (my normal one was busy) did that to me without asking once. I suddenly heard that distinct loud chopping noise, and I was so upset, I froze. I knew it messed my hair up from previous experiences as a kid. And it takes so long to grow it back 😞 (3b hair). It's so validating to hear someone finally explain why it's not good to do. When straight hair people try to tell me what they think my hair needs, it is so frustrating when I don't know how to properly explain why they are wrong. RUclips has been a huge help.
Mell…I appreciate all the information and tips you give curlies! As a permed curly, I do implement a lot of your tips and have found that since doing so, my curls last way longer than they used to! I go 4 months between perms, that is when there is just too much grow out and only the bottom half of my hair will still be wavy…well, actually, now I can still get a good curl at that point! I am sooo happy there is going to be more of a product focus on hair type…I have fine, low density, high porosity hair and really have to be careful what I use because it can weigh my hair down something awful! My favourite additions to my routine because of you are my perfect hair towel and the Ouidad lightweight gel. Fabulous! I also now use a leave in conditioner on my ends and sometimes start my styling with a bit of Ouidad styling cream. Gotta have crunch if I want the style to last though! I started getting perms 35 years ago (yeah…I’m old!) and did that in combination with *shudder* Sun In to be blonde! How do I still have hair?? I took about a 10 year break and have been permed again now for 7 years. Products have come a long way!! Thanks again for the education.
You're the first person I could actually find that I trust styling and at home cuts for natural curly hair!! It's hard out here in Portland, OR I REALLY appreciate your content!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
Can you PLEASE do a video on how to texturize curly hair. I’m pretty sure getting my hair thinned out has really impacted my curl pattern. I’ve been in the process of growing it back out but I still wanna know how to get texture and dimension without ruining them. TANK UUU ❤️
Thank you for sharing a simple, doable routine. I have the straightest of straight hair, but I was blessed with a daughter who inherited her curls from her daddy, so I'm trying to figure out what the heck I'm supposed to do with her hair! Since she's still so little, I can't really do a super long, complicated routine on her. It has been a very intimidating and confusing journey for me, and it doesn't help that there is very little info on what to do with fine curly hair!
I can literally follow every single step the way you do it Mel, and my hair still doesn't turn out the way I want to! I don't know if it's products or technique but wow, I'm in a curl funk
Have you experimented with different types of brushes? I ask because I know for me, certain brushes will not give me definite curls as much as others. Brushes like the denim brush, Felicia leatherwood and tangle tweezer splits my hair and makes it look more like a perm. I don’t use those brushes to style. They do however do well with detangling so I normally tend to use those for that. Bestool detangling brush (which is normally for natural, kinky hair) gives me better results. I found a cheap dupe on Shein and I think any detangling brush for natural hair will do the job. I know you’re probably exhausted but I do suggest try to experiment all avenues. May not be the product itself
I cut my hair some time ago to get rid of all the damage caused by years and years of chemically straightening it Now that it's grown quite a bit, I was actually thinking about giving up because of how long it took to care for it, but you have definitely changed my mind! Thank you! 🤗
Also a simple question, some ppl recommend not brushing your hair after you get out of the shower, so they don’t ruin the curl pattern, and i even heard someone says they don’t like to part their hair while applibg product cuz they find they put too much product in there, what do you think about this, Mell?
The biggest hurdle for me regarding haircare products is how fragranced everything is. Same with skincare & personal products in general. It's very frustrating & I get tired of fighting about it with stylists who don't get it.
Thank God I found this video!! TikTok “hacks” are so overwhelming and it feels like people online are competing to have the most extreme / “perfect” curly girl routine instead of actually doing what’s right (and minimal) for their hair type. I got so overwhelmed and thought I’d never be able to actually get curly hair. I was trying strainer drying, pre-conditioning, 2-hour masks, ect…but not applying conditioner correctly and using enough water while styling. I’m following this routine on my next wash day, thank you Mel 💞💇♀️
This video is a gem ❤️ could you please make a video recommending specific products for low porosity hair. I’ve honestly been trying different products for years and I feel like my hair keeps getting worse 😭
I have fine low porosity hair but a huge amount of it and I’ve gone through so many products my bathroom looks like a supermarket. I still haven’t found my perfect combination
No joke for the longest time I just thought I had really frizzy hair until I met a friend with curly hair and they commented on mine and asked me questions about it and then saying how I most likely have wavy-curly hair, now trying to learn healthy hair tips so I don’t waste money, Tysm your channel has been a lifesaver ❤️🙏
Girl this video was reassuring about my current routine, but man do I feel dumb 😂 I’ve been letting my hair drip dry while I do my skincare routine and you mentioning the claw clip made me realize how goofy I am 😂 I don’t have any idea why that never registered to me as an idea, but thank you!
I actually prefer using a mask pre shampoo to after shampoo :) And it definitely has a conditioning and smoothing effect on my curls, so I cannot confirm that it's wasting products. As my hair strands are ultra fine, deep conditioning after using shampoo only weighs down my hair 🤷
I also mask pre shampoo with coconut oil, olive oil and castor oil (for 1 - 2 hours). Condition with moisturizing conditioner post shampooing, and even at first try my hair felt instantly softer even prior to adding the leave in.
Make sure when ur about to come out the shower wash your hair with cold water doesn't have to be freezing just cooling and it also helps smooth ur hair strands and make sure you also take out any excess products I've started doing this and it helped a lot tbh
Thank you Mel I really needed this for years I didn’t know how to properly take care of my waves or curls I’m still working on it but I seem to get really better at it , So thank you ❤
Love you. You have changed my hair. I would like to see more videos on different hair, textures and curl types, etc.. I would also love to see a video share some tips and tricks on how to find the best I kept sleeping. I feel like the trick is to have your hair on the top of your head? Because whenever I sleep in a nightcap, my hair is very frizzy and flat. I find that doing a touchup is more work than just re-washing it every day. Tips and tricks would be appreciated.
It's been a process, but I think I'm finally getting somewhere with my wavy/curly hair. Thanks in big part to you and your generous library of knowledge. 🙏 Do you have any advice for grey hair?
Ive been WAITING to find a chanel like yours, someone who knows their stuff and understands how curls work, AND isnt just promoting products because they're getting payed, because they work. thank you for posting🙏😭
💓this video! Every step has been so helpful to me! Also fellow curlies, take the thinning shears tip seriously (I learned from a VERY bad haircut) Thanks Mell and Amanda for the video!
Deva Curl was ruining my hair in 2019-2020, I was losing over 40% in 6 months in 2020 even after I stopped it. I was diagnosed with Telogen Effluvium from stress but I attribute Deva Curl’s formula change as a cause too. My hair was past my bra, henna red, curly and full. Now it is at my shoulders or less because each hair that I lost to TE has to regrow from the start over a 30-40% of my scalp. I’m hanging in there, people have way worse to deal with. But at 68, when I already feel like I’m getting frumpy, my self-esteem has taken a beating. Love this community and love Mel and “seester!”
This is a great post! I have fine curly/wavy hair and lots of it. The less I do to my hair the better, even don't use conditioner every time I wash. Cheaper shampoos have always worked better than expensive ones #1 tip is to get a great cut from a hairdresser who understands curly/wavy hair ..90% of issues solved. #2 tip is to watch good haircut posts on RUclips...get tips on how to trim hair so you don't have to go to hairdresser esp if wanting to grow your hair. #3 tip if you prefer wash n go... airdry and don't touch it till it's dry..shake/fluff it out. I've never used a diffuser. #4 tip experiment with styling products. My hair prefers one styling product on wet/damp hair...a lighter weight curl cream, a "smooth n groom" one is better than gel. #5 tip is scalp massage to get the blood flowing to the roots. Lovely at the end of the day.
Great video Mel! I think I'm a pretty experienced curly, and like all of your videos I always learn something new and helpful while also being entertained. You and your sister are wonderful!
The non-stop scrunching! When I started styling my hair curly, I thought I had to scrunch every step; because that's what I was told by the people on the internet!. Gladly I realized it wasn't necessary. But is good to have backup advice.
Great info Mel. I am now in the midst of a dilemma I cannot figure out. For the life of me I can no longer get a cast on my hair. I have always been able to get a good cast and it just stopped. Same products, same technique, no cast. I've taken your suggestions about letting it be not so soaking wet. I have three key products that I use that always give me a cast and no longer. What on earth has happened?
I had my first curly perm 6 months ago and am ready to have my roots permed. My natural hair is fine-textured with some waves, so I'm still doing my best to learn how to style my new hair and recreate Ilana Glazer's curls! She's a hair inspo of mine. Love her curl clumps. I havent watched your video yet, it'll have to wait until my kid is napping. Subscribed! Thanks!
Hi Mell, I noticed you saying that we should be using products based on our hair texture rather than our curl type. I was just wondering how you would recommend selecting products when you have multiple hair textures? Most of my hair is medium in texture but the back top third is extremely coarse and thick. I'm finding it difficult to find the right balance in products as my medium-textured hair has a looser wave pattern than my course hair (which is more curly) and I'm concerned it will be weighed down by products designed for coarser hair. Any tips for finding the right balance?
This is so helpful! Thank you Mel! I thought I had my routine down pat. I’m coarse, thick and medium to very high porosity. I struggle with dryness but I think I’m good now. I’ll be implementing the style tips in this vid. The thinning shears thing is so true! I’ve know that for 5 years now and I don’t thin anymore because of the lack of definition it gives me
Whoa! I started my curly journey about six months ago and haven't ever gotten brush styiling to work for me. I came cross your channel, watched this video, tried it again and it finally turned out!!! Thank you for your help!
I learned so much. I am currently 15 (in my last year of high school) and since I was in fifth grade (perhaps 8-ish at the time) my mom started straightening my hair and making me do keratins because she got stressed with my hair (she has straight pin hair), I used to have 3b curls. Last year, I convinced my mother to let me go back to my curly hair, I had my curly¿ roots till my shoulders and the rest was straight (till the waist), being impulsive, I went and chopped my hair a bit under my shoulders, now I have mixed curls, some strands are super curly, some are wavy, and my front pieces don't curl. My ends (maybe 2 fingers long) are still straight so my theory is that those straight ends bring the curls down and they don't form. I really need help because it does affect me a lot knowing my curls are not the same, if someone has some tips or something I would really appreciate it.
@@dumbnoodleman The first grade I skipped was like kindergarten because i already spoke english HAODKA then mainly because my parents thought they sent me to play😭 it’s a really funny but complicated story, mainly it was my parents fault
I don’t have much experience since I’m also learning but I believe that your hair will heal eventually. Treating the hair with its due care and letting it grow and cutting the ends that are not healthy will bring back your natural hair. It may take time, but there’s hope. Also, there is people that has different hair types in their hair. I hope it helps. Good luck through this process :)
i definitely feel like the internet has me doing too much but my main issue is that NOBODY IS GIVING CURLY HAIR ADVICE FOR YOUNG GIRLS. my daughter doesn't take a shower before school every morning, i'm misting dry hair that got tangled overnight (yes she has a satin pillowcase, no she won't wear bonnets or plop) and we don't have time for a whole wash-diffuse-product-style routine just to bring out her natural curls every morning. so instead of the springy curls she has fresh out of the shower, her hair just falls into a half-assed wave for the rest of the day and there's nothing i can do about it. in fact it seems like all of the curly hair advice is for like SUPER curly hair, not the big shirley temple sausage ringlets. i just wish i could bring out her curls in the morning without getting her hair SOPPING wet or putting a ton of product in it.
Honestly, I have a similar texture to your daughter and what works is using a bonnet/pineappling the hair, but I get why you might not want to do that haha

I have hair that is more wavy than curly and I use gel as a finishing when I wash it. That way my hair is usually defined enough for 2 or 3 days. After that I either do mist it with plenty of water and reapply the leave in or I wear updos for the rest of the week. But the definition does get lower and lower as tou get farther from washing day. I just don't mind it very much!
Braids…I have the Shirley Temple curl pattern and braids are about the only option. It will also drastically cut down on tangles overnight. You could try something like curl rollers or flexi rods, it would allow you to set the shape a little better but I haven’t tried it myself. Maybe rag curls for something a little more comfortable. From my own experience, this curl pattern is one that only really thrives for the first day or two after washing. Because my hair tangles if you look at it sideways, I keep it braided and/or bunned if it’s not drying. This does help keep tangles at bay and reduce the time I spend trying to somewhat control the wildness, but it does mean the curls change to braid waves after a couple of days. It’s a trade off, depends on if you want curls or to reduce the time required each morning.
I learn something new every time. I had no idea if you can't brush through your hair in the shower, add more water. How simple! I think your next video will be about hair oiling. fingers crossed.

Mell, you should make a curly hair app, where people go in and find their routine and product recommendations according to their hair type, length, etc… along with various styling tutorials and other tips for their specific hair
That is such a good idea!! I second this!
And third!
Or offer paid virtual consultations. I’d pay for that.
Yeah!!!!! Like Skin Bliss does, for example
Great idea!! I have naturally wavy curly hair (not the pic as I straightened it) and am starting to embrace it. I love it so far. I’d love an APP
I’ve always felt weird about it, thank you for this comment!! Nice to hear it from a medical pro!
@@melikaaziminia9522 Does it have to be one or the other? My hair isn't fine but it isn't thick either it's kinda somewhere in the middle

Will try to find 😊
Thanks again 👍

I also have wavy hair and currently have a pixie. Love it, but if I decide to grow it out I will have a lot of good tips to follow.
I'm glad you mentioned adding water. I learned that long ago and it's been the key to making corrections every step of the process for me.
Thank you so much for this video! I have naturally wavy hair and this simplified, well explained process makes me feel less intimidated and actually want to wear my hair in its natural form again. I've been straightening it for about 18 years and it feels like it's time to embrace the wave.

Finally! Someone who prioritizes cruelty free products!
Loooove to be validated about not wasting my time with excess products and techniques lol. Really great video, thank you!

I’m graying naturally and the gray is soft and curly as well. Celtic-Germanic roots here. Products are overwhelming to me! Appreciate your videos!

I love the claw clip in the shower tip!! Styling soaking wet hair is a game changer for me and I hate the drippage as I get ready to style!

I am not a beginner and still found this really helpful. Great info. Thanks Mel
As a stylist, I usually have to talk people with curly hair OUT of having their hair thinned.
Thank you. 31 years of curls and I spent more than half straightening it because I couldn’t figure my hair out this is a major help!!!

Love this! Plz do a product routine for porous, fine, wavy hair!! Please 🙏 🙏 🙏

This made me smile ❤
Is it one with some more detail on how to choose the the right products?
please consider that this IS in fact a sponsorship and is only mentioned as so in the very bottom of the description
I bought a diffuser because everyone had one and I think I needed it.
Nah. I just absolutely hated it.
Nothing is a one size fits all. Thanks for this
I was about to do the big chop-glad I saw this & reminded us of how awesome Eva NYC products are excellent & affordable! Oh God Bless ya Mel! Thank goodness for you Curly Queen!
Mel and Amanda, thank you so much for being my ride or die curly girls. You have helped me master my routine and every single time I have a question I no longer go to google it's Manes by Mell!
WE ARE HAIR FOR U❤
You got a new sub from me!!
Can you PLEASE do a video on how to texturize curly hair. I’m pretty sure getting my hair thinned out has really impacted my curl pattern. I’ve been in the process of growing it back out but I still wanna know how to get texture and dimension without ruining them. TANK UUU ❤️
I’m not the only one asking to please do a video on how to texturize curly hair. Thanks
What do you mean by texture?
I feel your pain My hair wants to separate into small, stringy curls. Idk if it’s the years of straightening or something else. It is frustrating.
I can do the same exact things for 5 weeks and get slightly different results each time.
Wavy hair is very tricky, i feel you
Wonder if it's due to damage? Also, Mel does have impeccable curls. I wish I had as much density as she does.
I cut my hair some time ago to get rid of all the damage caused by years and years of chemically straightening it
Now that it's grown quite a bit, I was actually thinking about giving up because of how long it took to care for it, but you have definitely changed my mind! Thank you! 🤗
Also a simple question, some ppl recommend not brushing your hair after you get out of the shower, so they don’t ruin the curl pattern, and i even heard someone says they don’t like to part their hair while applibg product cuz they find they put too much product in there, what do you think about this, Mell?
I bought the primer once at target and instantly feel in love with it! Sadly i ran out but definitely buying more
The biggest hurdle for me regarding haircare products is how fragranced everything is. Same with skincare & personal products in general. It's very frustrating & I get tired of fighting about it with stylists who don't get it.
I have shared a few fragrance-free routines!
I've always been told to never leave in conditioner longer than the directions say because it will damage hair.
A complete banger of enormous importance. A guide to healthy hair. Mell, my love, you are unmatchable.
I loved the pics of you growing up! I felt those in my bones after all the struggles with zero knowledge of how to take care of my hair in the 80s🫣
Girl this video was reassuring about my current routine, but man do I feel dumb 😂
I’ve been letting my hair drip dry while I do my skincare routine and you mentioning the claw clip made me realize how goofy I am 😂 I don’t have any idea why that never registered to me as an idea, but thank you!
HELLO i am a preteen. i recently figured out that my hair has gotten curly and you are SO reliable with this. thank you from the bottom of my heart 😭
Legit question How would deep conditioner weight down your hair if your suppose to wash it out ?
@@uwuiseeyouuwu2819 because you only wash it out with water (after shampooing) and some of the conditioning agents (oils etc) remain on your hair
Make sure when ur about to come out the shower wash your hair with cold water doesn't have to be freezing just cooling and it also helps smooth ur hair strands and make sure you also take out any excess products I've started doing this and it helped a lot tbh
My hair is more on the coily side than curly, but I’m definitely happy I discovered this video before right before my wash day 😊
Thank you Mel I really needed this for years I didn’t know how to properly take care of my waves or curls I’m still working on it but I seem to get really better at it , So thank you ❤
Happy Texture Thursday!! Excited for this one!! Much love and happiness!! Xoxo 😘
Yay! Thank you Deanna !!!Same to you😘
15:09 👏🏽 to all of these! Next topic I think will be … oils and which to use for which texture🧐
It's been a process, but I think I'm finally getting somewhere with my wavy/curly hair. Thanks in big part to you and your generous library of knowledge. 🙏
Do you have any advice for grey hair?
Ive been WAITING to find a chanel like yours, someone who knows their stuff and understands how curls work, AND isnt just promoting products because they're getting payed, because they work. thank you for posting🙏😭
💓this video! Every step has been so helpful to me! Also fellow curlies, take the thinning shears tip seriously (I learned from a VERY bad haircut) Thanks Mell and Amanda for the video!
So true about the thinning shears!! My hair is still recovering after many months.
Always breaking it down in an understandable format. You are the best Mel! 🥰
i have to say, the transition between the video cover and the start... amazing
Mel… you’re amazing!! My hair is looking sooo much better because I’ve been following your tips and techniques.
This is a great post!
I have fine curly/wavy hair and lots of it. The less I do to my hair the better, even don't use conditioner every time I wash. Cheaper shampoos have always worked better than expensive ones
#1 tip is to get a great cut from a hairdresser who understands curly/wavy hair ..90% of issues solved.
I hope for a video on oils - which oils for which hair and when how to use. Loved this video ❤
Coming soon! 😉
I learned a few new things today, thank you Mel 😊💗
The non-stop scrunching! When I started styling my hair curly, I thought I had to scrunch every step; because that's what I was told by the people on the internet!. Gladly I realized it wasn't necessary. But is good to have backup advice.
I love your science backed videos Mell. I’ve learnt so much about hair from you, thank you 🙏🏻 ❤ also you and Sis are super entertaining 😂
Happy texture Thursday!! Can’t wait to watch!! I hope you’re having a great day ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you! You too Lynzi😘😘😘
This is such a good way to promote a product, love that we're being educated as well as a prod recomendation 🙌🏾
I'm not calling you a liar or nothin but i was wondering did you skip a lot of grades if so thats cool howd you do it?
@@dumbnoodleman The first grade I skipped was like kindergarten because i already spoke english HAODKA then mainly because my parents thought they sent me to play😭 it’s a really funny but complicated story, mainly it was my parents fault
I don’t have much experience since I’m also learning but I believe that your hair will heal eventually. Treating the hair with its due care and letting it grow and cutting the ends that are not healthy will bring back your natural hair. It may take time, but there’s hope. Also, there is people that has different hair types in their hair. I hope it helps. Good luck through this process :)
@@LA-lf2rk Thank you! Good luck for you too🫶🏻
The dark hair is beautiful!
i definitely feel like the internet has me doing too much but my main issue is that NOBODY IS GIVING CURLY HAIR ADVICE FOR YOUNG GIRLS. my daughter doesn't take a shower before school every morning, i'm misting dry hair that got tangled overnight (yes she has a satin pillowcase, no she won't wear bonnets or plop) and we don't have time for a whole wash-diffuse-product-style routine just to bring out her natural curls every morning. so instead of the springy curls she has fresh out of the shower, her hair just falls into a half-assed wave for the rest of the day and there's nothing i can do about it. in fact it seems like all of the curly hair advice is for like SUPER curly hair, not the big shirley temple sausage ringlets. i just wish i could bring out her curls in the morning without getting her hair SOPPING wet or putting a ton of product in it.
Ooh new ManesByMell intro M✂️M. Who designed it? It simple yet elegant 1:07
Amanda really included a clip of someone throwing a $100 bill down the toilet😂

Happy texture Thursday ❤❤❤❤
Amazing info, Mell! I usually twist my hair when deep conditioning since I have high porosity hair that tangles.
