I'd love a video on how to avoid the 'wet look' after styling. I have fine hair and it takes literally over a day to stop looking dark and wet, even with just using a super light gel. don't want to look 2000 and late! thanks girls!

I have avoided that by applying a hair oil to break the cast once my hair is completely dry. The oil helps break the crunch up and fluff the hair out a bit.

It’s a hard topic to find good videos on.
I am so frustrated right now because I was getting (and probably will still get some) highlights and using toners or colored glosses on my hair.
I’ve never been a fan of all over permanent hair color. I did it once years ago and despised having to go in for frequent root touch ups. I’m low maintenance when it comes to color and prefer things that will wash out and grow out/fade nicely.
The last time I had my hair done I asked for a semi permanent strawberry blonde color just before fall. I stressed that I did not want permanent color, I was waiting for more gray hair to come in and I was going to move toward gray blending after that.
The girl used a permanent auburn dye and repeatedly lied about it being permanent.
I had spent years letting my new gray hairs come in and grow.
** She did use a colored gloss on my hair one time after this as a temporary correction because she also didn’t apply the dye evenly. I waited for it to fade and then did a strawberry blonde gloss. The owner of the salon was helping her mix the gloss and kept being very snappy. She said - you keep asking for things that won’t cover your gray hair!!
That’s because I’ve been stressing that I don’t want my gray hair covered. I was growing out a full head of highlights, letting more gray come in and just wanted a hint of color for the fall.
I’m back with my Aveda stylist. She did my hair for a decade but went out of work before the pandemic due to child birth complications (she and the baby are great now). We’re working out a game plan with my hair. I need to go to more of an ashier dark blonde while I grow the remaining permanent dye out. I want to minimize damage in the process.
On top of that I’m trying to get styling with it down pat.
Brush styling is helping with that (I had to keep playing with it) though I can’t do much with the new growth that won’t lay down.

    • @pollysshore2539
      @pollysshore2539 Год назад

I had to switch to brush styling every section toward my face. I could do a mix before (though admittedly I was lazy with it). Finger rolling/coiling helps too though it time consuming.
It helps tame the gray hairs and work them into curl clumps.
I’ve got to be gentle and add in more moisture where I can while still maintaining balance.
      It’s a juggling act.

One category that wasn’t included was heat protectants. I know other items like leave in conditioners can have heat protection. I have a question about heat protection- when should I apply it?
At the end of my styling routine- bc it will be the outer layer or shield against the hair dryer? Do the benefits of the heat protectant still work if I use it as the bottom layer? I have problematic hair so I layer on at LEAST 3 styling products not counting a heat protectant.

I dont use thaaaaat many products because I have ultra baby fine curly hair and too much can weight it down and make it feel dirty. So these are the product categories I use:
    - Shampoo - mid range 😅 (I have been using the brand Giovanni Eco Chic since highschool, so over 15 years now) under $20 for me
    - Conditioner - I like my shampoo and conditioner to be a set, but I have a few sets for different needs, so also mid range. Under $20
    - Deep conditioner - SAVE! I have good results with deep conditioners that are $3 so why change that? From $3 to $12?
    - Treatments - SPLURGE! My baby fine hair is very very dry, and I also bleach it and color it, and while deep conditioner helps, the dryness makes it prone to breakage. So I splurge on bond builders and such products (Olaplex #3 is a godsent for fine hair!) Up to $45
    - Leave-in conditioner - mid range. I only have to make sure that it is water based, lightweight and that it doesnt build up! That is good enough for me. So I can't go with the cheapest, but mid range are great for me. Under $20
    - Gel - mid range - just like leave in conditioner, if it is lightweight, not crunchy and water based, it is good for me. Under $10
    - Hair brush - Splurge! A good brush will last a long time, and your hair will thank you! Up to $30
    - Hair serum - Splurge! It has to be light, not build up, but also do its job well. Too light it doesnt protect that much, as it doesnt coat my strands too well. Too heavy and it weights my hair down and makes it feel dirty. So a high end formula, a mix of oils and silicones is the key for me. I live in high humidity place and oil is key to keep my hair looking great, less frizz, and retain the moisture. Up to $40
    - Heat protectant - save. Affordable ones do a good job so I cant complain. Under $10
    - Heat styling tools - mid range. Im not gonna be spending $500 for a dyson, but will not be using a $30 flat iron from Walgreens. I only have a blow dryer with a diffuser, a blow drying brush (Hot Tools), a flat iron and a wave wand. I barely use these. Maybe 3 to 4 times a year!
The other categories, such as Curl Cream, Refresh Sprays, Hair Spray, Dry Shampoo, etc... I dont use. My leave in, gel and serum are enough! And I can dilute my leave in conditioner between washes. Oh that is another thing, I dont wash very often because after experimenting, this is what works best for my hair! My scalp and hair are dry, I barely produce any sebum, so I can go a long time between washes, and this has made my hair feel so good, and look healthy!

I think Anthony did very well. Even when *HE* would be cheap (which since he has both short hair & a very simple, minimal style haircut, makes sense), he explained why most of your viewers would splurge.
As to products - overall, I agree with your Assessments, Mell. I would spend big bucks on a dryer, but unless I'm straightening, I very rarely take heat to my curls - don't want to spend the time (until my Sept 22 4inch chop, shoulder-mid back length 3B/3C curl patterns that is fine but thick took around an hour to blow-out straight + 30 minutes finishing w/ flat iron) + my results were better via air-drying versus diffusing.

Putting my favorites in each category here as I play along! Would love to see replies with your favorites/recommendations 🥰
SPLURGE: Shampoo: still searching for my holy grail!
SPLURGE: Conditioner/Deep Conditioner/Leave-In: I LOVE the Curlsmith Multi-Tasking Conditioner. Never fails me! Plus, I almost always use a mask instead of conditioner. The only thing missing from this product is a heat protectant.
SAVE: Hair Treatment: I've tried both Olaplex No. 3 and Curlsmith Bond Rehab Salve, but I find that they both do about the same for me, and since my hair isn't too damaged it isn't worth the splurge.
SAVE: Brush: Original Tangle Teezer. I'm interested in their wide tooth comb, though! And love the wet brush for detangling in the shower.
SAVE: Curl Cream: The OG! Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie
SPLURGE: Gel: Curlsmith In-Shower Style Fixer
SAVE: Mousse: Not Your Mother's Curl Talk Mousse
SPLURGE: Hair Oils: I LOVE the Bread Beauty Supply Hair Oil.
SAVE: Refresh Sprays: I actually only use the Verb Curl Foaming Gel @ManesByMell for refreshing! I find it most effective in this step of my routine.
SAVE: Dry Shampoo/Texture Sprays/Hairsprays: aren't a part of my routine. Open to recommendations!
MID-RANGE: Hair Dryer: I use the Dyson Supersonic, but honestly find that the price tag doesn't justify the benefits. If I could go back, I'd probably buy the Shark FlexStyle which is still a high quality dryer while also being less expensive and more versatile.
This was lots of fun! Loved the video, all you Guido Siblings!

Lol.....poor Anthony!! I say keep him! I say keep showgirl Amanda but give her extra balancing practice. 😂😂😂 Great fun Mel and thanks for the advice as well. I say mid range or splurge on shampoo. Save on conditioners, splurge on styles but some good mid range ones also exist.

I've tried a bunch of refresh sprays and they just make my hair gummy or sticky, and my curls don't curl up right. A little water and a tiny bit more or my styling products does better

Do you recommend using sulfates and silicones? I’m black & have naturally curly hair and I feel like when I used to use Pantene back in the day, my hair was thriving and growing. Silicones to me feel like they protect my hair like when I use heat on it and when I wear it curly, but I haven’t used silicones when my hair was curly in a while.

    • @em6644
      @em6644 Год назад +1

Not sure about sulfates, but I’ve definitely seen her say she likes silicones! They smooth the hair well. She has her favourite products but she seems to acknowledge that everyone’s hair is different and if something works well for you, you should do it! I’m not black myself and my hair’s only wavy but I have heard other black people with curly hair say they had a good experience with those products, even though I know not everyone does. It sounds like they worked really well for you before, so I think that means it’s worth trying again! If they have a travel set I find that’s good way to test out hair products? Good luck!!
