Also want to add…any major biological change can impact your hair. I have a friend who got an autoimmune disease and her previously wavy/curly hair started growing in straight. When Mel posted this I was actually concerned she was going to say she was sick! So I am glad to hear that’s not the case.

I don't see a huge change in her hair TBH. I actually think it looks better and healthier. If there was any health issue going on would make it look much less healthy and likely thinner, change in texture and feel. That's what's happening to me. hairdressers are having a hard time doing my hair and it breaks easily if they use too much heat tools. Hard to not just shave it off.

This! Any endocrine/metabolic/hormonal/etc fluctuations (and women in general can have many) directly affect hair texture, skin, etc. My hair has changed drastically many times throughout my 65+ years, due to adrenal, thyroid, pregnanies & menopausal challenges. Thicker, thinner, crazy loss, grayer, darker, curlier, straighter, you name it!

Hormones. Let me say it again for the haters in the back.. your body changes constantly, and your hair will also especially as you age and your hormones change. Example every women I know who got pregnant, had kids, had their hair change. One used to have straight up curly hair and after those hormones kicked in, her hair went almost straight, she had to start getting perms to achieve curls again. Hormones change everything as as we age.

    • @lilyskitchen3637
      @lilyskitchen3637 Год назад +60

Exactly, hormones! When I was a child I had frizzy but straight hair and there was no way to make it wavy or curly, even though my dad has 2 c wavy hair and my mum and my brother have 3 b curly hair.
However, when I got my first period my hair started to get a very weak 2a wavy pattern.
Fast forward to my first pregnancy and my hair turned into a 2b wavy hair.
By the second pregnancy it became a 2b/2c wavy hair.
Now that I'm back to my period and I'm in the process of stopping breastfeeding my hair has never been more beautiful with a 2 c / 3 a pattern.
      My crazy hormones journey 😂😂😂

During my pregnancy straight again. After my pregnancy my pituitary gland stopped working and so did my thyroid... my hair thinned and got curly again. Now it's not thin but it is fine and curly. Yes, finally good to know everybody struggles with hair texture changes. I had straight hair as a kid, waves entered the scene in college, and after each of my four kids the hairs got curlier and curlier. I’m a legit curly with looser curl in the back, super tight in the front. But, I have had fifteen surgeries with anesthesia since 2011, and anesthesia can really mess with the body for many months, also I have hypothyroidism. And when having multiple surgeries a year, I’ve struggled a lot with my curl pattern, extreme hair loss and also a few good years in there. Really appreciate you and the wonderful teaching.

Mel! Thank you so much for making this video. I feel like, especially in women’s spaces. Nobody really talks about your curl pattern changing? Especially over the last almost 3 years where the pandemic has caused several people to have hair loss. Whether it’s due to the virus, or just stress in general. I’ve even heard of in some cases, the coronavirus causing peoples curl patterns to change completely. I think, for myself, I was such a shock when my hair started changing texture, because I just didn’t know that that’s what it’s like going into your 20s. The doctor says I’m healthy, but my hair definitely changed. I also like to tell people that even going on birth control can change your hair is texture and thickness. When I was on birth control for three months, my curls started getting dryer. My hair started growing faster! And when I got off of birth control, I started noticing increased shedding. So please make sure that everything is safe and secure.

I always think a person's natural hair color is the most beautiful on them (unless it's something wild that suits the person, like green or cherry red or rainbow or multi-pastel). Bleach kinda projects "I'm young and experimenting" or "I want to fit in" while natural hair colors project "I'm comfortable in who I am" and wild colors say "I'm just having fun with my life." I had my bleach phase too, but it felt wrong. I got the family "start greying in your 20s" gene, so now I rock my natural black with crazy deep blue demi-permanent streaks and I *LOVE* it. So much happier and more confident like this than being "on-trend."

I totally agree with what you said about natural color! I used to hate my hair color (dark blonde/light brown) cause it looked so dull. Had my phase where I bleached it once and instantly regretted it. Now that I’m back to natural, I’ve realized that taking care of the health of my hair has made the color so much better looking! Deep conditioning regularly brings out the natural shine and I love it!

Great video Mell. I think it’s important to help people understand why hair changes even if it’s just a visual change. Personally I think your hair is just as curly but like you pointed out because it’s healthier it clumps more and may not have quite the ‘volume’ or ‘grit’ it had before which changes its appearance. In this vid both sides looked as curly but you could see the salt spray had added slightly more texture and volume than the side without. I notice these days my curls sit much ‘heavier’ being uncoloured and healthy than when my hair was bleached and dry. I also think highlighted hair shows the curl more than dark hair. Either way I think you are still a curly haired goddess and your hair looks super shiny and healthy and luxe ❤

In my case, when I was a little girl I used to have super straight hair, but then puberty hit and it changed in an extreme way... it started to get curly (although, at the beginning I thought it was frizz), and also, it got a bit darker and thicker. My hair is wavy and fine (2A-B with some 3A curls) and it gets much wavier when bleached. I always assumed it was because my fine hair didn't have as much grip, so the curl groups didn't stay together easily, but when the cuticle is roughed up a bit, I have more friction to keep my waves from falling. So I ironically used salt sprays and other products that contain magnesium sulfate, but I thought it was mimicking the grit, rather than actually chemistry!

I’m also relieved to hear that even for someone with your expertise and tight curls that growing out the bleach can change the texture!
When I first started with CGM I found my perfect technique that made my hair look like it had literally been curled with an iron. (I’m 2a) it soaked up gel perfectly. Problem is I wanted to grow out the bleach. It’s been natural for a couple years now and it just barely holds the wave. Everything weighs it down. I’ve tried to adapt. Styling damp instead of soaking wet has helped. Best I can do now is use some mousse to get a rougher beachier look. Oh well, if I can only have one, I’d rather have my natural color.

THANK YOU FOR THIS. In the past few years I have gone from virgin hair, to heavily bleached hair, back to virgin hair again, and my curl pattern has changed drastically. I could not for the life of me figure out why my curls got tighter when they were seriously damaged! It was obvious that it was due to bleaching, since when I have regrown them, they went back to being more wavy than curly, but the mechanics of it remained a mystery. It also makes me wonder if my change in curl pattern between my teenage years and now is not only due to changing hormones, but also the level of care put into my hair. Back then, a 2in1 shampoo and some styling mousse were all I used. And the curls were crunchy as hell, but my god, were they tight. Now, with hair oils, masks, creams, protective mists, they sure behave very differently.

Definitely age and hormones change a lot the pattern of everybody's hair, unaffortunatly in menopause we can star loosing hair and looks less curly.
You are so young and your hair is beautiful !!

Hi Mell, I wanted to know how your routine has changed now that you have medium porosity hair (in regards to using protein on your hair).
I’ve been struggling to figure out a routine for myself, I too have medium porosity and fine hair.
Also I love the website, I’ve already subscribed to the newsletter 💜

So many root causes of hair changes, HORMONAL fluctuations being #1. Also METABOLIC changes as we age. I love your natural hair color btw, looks much more natural/healthy compared to the heavy bleached look. Keep up the great work, will checkout ur new website!

Not really new research shows it doesn't slow until 60-70 it's more life style changes like becoming more sedentary and bad diet

My hair behaves differently at different lengths. The longer the length, the heavier it is, the less curly. Very short, it’s also far less curly.
I lighten my hair monthly for 30 years, and that doesn’t seem to inhibit my curls.
My hair didn’t start to show it’s true curly nature until after I had a full hysterectomy at age 38. Am now 71.

I wonder if you have many old subscribers. I embraced my curls only last year at the age of 70!. I'm finally my real self, well except for a semi-permanent color. I found your channel and started getting educated and discovered product. I now went from short, blow dried hair to scrunching my medium length curlsand loving it. Thanks for your curl coaching.
