- What’s the difference between the Rake and Shake vs Ribbon Curl Brush Styling Technique for curly hair? Take a look at this side-by-side with pro-tips to achieve the best results with minimal frizz and no extreme heat or damage thanks to intelligent heat control on my @dysonhair Supersonic Hair Dryer. #dysonhair #mydyson #ad
Check out the Dyson Supersonic here: bit.ly/3zkFf9o
This hairdryer has been my preferred tool for years, especially when it comes to diffusing because of the unique bowl attachment - engineered to disperse air evenly around curls to simulate natural drying in a fraction of the time.
Dyson’s Air Multiplier technology produces a high-pressure, high-velocity jet of controlled air, for fast drying and precision styling, Intelligent Heat Control measures air temperature over 40 times a second to regulate the heat, preventing extreme heat damage to help protect hair's shine. Ergonomic designs make the tool and accessory easy to use and beautiful to look at. It’s a dryer like no other, and I love her.

Could you do some videos for the wavy girls??? Especially tips for very fine hair.
Exactly what I was coming here to ask too :) Styling techniques for fine wavy hair
Yes! I have very long, fine hair that’s probably mostly 2c (some 2b & 3 a too)
Yes pls! 😘
She has some vids for wavy/mixed hair a little further back on her channel! She’s how I learned the lazy CGM which tbh is easier for wavies anyway🙌
You read my mind! Techniques for jaw length wavy would be much appreciated!
The rake method seems like it will be difficult if your doing it on yourself. I’d like to see how to do it on yourself, not with a stylist doing it.
Hi Mell! I would love to see some content for curlier/afro hair (3c to 4c) and what are the best ways to style it 😊
What techniques would be best for very fine, very low density hair? I use the ribbon technique currently but it can be hit and miss, my sections are tiny. Would love to see you demo this on someone with similar hair.
❤ TWO MY FAVORITE CURLIES ARE BACK AND WITH THE VIDEO I SO DESPERATELY NEEDED!! Thank you girls for yet another great video. 😂 who else loves and can relate to the Amanda/Mell Seester dynamic? No? Just me? 😂 ok. Keep up the great work guys. Hugs.xoxo
Mel I love how your hair looks here. Has a modern 90s vibe to it that also feels timeless idk.
It is a 90's vibe to her hair, explains why I started thinking about my high school teachers! 😆😂 It's cute for her face shape and fullness.
I'm echoeing many others here... please... videos on very fine, thin, wavy, long & medium length hair! It would also be great if you really focused on showing (via camera close-ups) the technique. It is so hard to see how much hair is chosen and exactly how ribbons are formed. Maybe it's just me, but I seem to need really detailed, not rushed, video & spoken instructions. (Not thrilled this seemed like a commercial for the hair dryer, though.)
Throwback Thursday. Ouidad came up with rake and shake over 20 yrs ago.
Wish you would do one for grey wavy hair
Yes that would be amazing!!
I'd love to see you test out Swavy Curly Courtney's "Swing Clump Curl" method. It works great for more wavy hair but I wonder how it would work on your tighter curl pattern.
Could you make a video (or several!) for coarse wavy hair? I have chin length, low porosity, 2B to 2C, coarse to very coarse hair. I’ve unsuccessfully tried your ribbon technique (could be operator error or could be my hair type, I don’t know) and all brushing does is straighten my hair out. It doesn’t seem to bounce back at all. Would like to see how you style a wavy vs a curly. I am soooo envious of you and your sister’s curls!😍😍😍
Hi Mell and Amanda! Great video! Can you do a new video in fine wavy/curly hair?
Yes! Please! Wouldve been a nice heads up at the beginning of the video…
A video for styling thin hair on curly headed kids please! ❤
Love the video! Brush styling seems to make my waves super limp and stringy. Any styling suggestions as an alternative?
I would love to see more techniques, I can never quite get the ribbon curls right
Yes please on showing us more styling techniques!! My hair is very fine and very long. My old tried and true styling techniques aren't working anymore, now that my hair is down to my tailbone
ahhhh!!! i remember rake and shake by Ms Ouidad herself (yes i'm old) and had been doing rake shake until i discovered you mell. I learned about brush styling THANK YOU You both are so much fun and so informative
I've been doing the rake and shake since the 90's. I believe Ouidad introduced it way back in the day. Great technique as long as you add scrunching.
It was definitely ouidad. Love their products. The only gel that works on my corkscrew curls.
Happy texture Thursday!! Yay a seester video, I’m so happy ❤️❤️❤️
I’ve been using the RAKE & SHAKE technique since 2002 ( I’ve always just “embraced” my curls, even though I didn’t lake them) so I learned to style it and would fly to the Santa Monica, from Salt Lake City, Utah, to the ouidad salon to get it cut every 6 months
I learned the rake and shake technique from Ouidad over 15 years ago. The top tier stylist in the NYC flagship salon taught me to use a very little amount of product for each section - nowhere near the amount used as shown by that stylist that's making the rounds. This technique brings out the natural curl in your hair and their carve and slice technique of cutting allows the curls to “nestle” into each other, so you're not left with a pyramid-shaped stack of curls. My style has changed a bit since then and I prefer the body and volume that the brush styling provides. Personally, I mix the two techniques: Brush style a section for the definition and smoothness of curl and rake and shake the section immediately after to get more and smaller clumps.
I love my dyson, but what I wouldn't give for a larger diffuser attachment with a deeper bowl! Great video ladies❤
This is great. How about some styling tips/techniques for curly/wavy layered short bobs?
I’d love to see what you would recommend for the quickest way to get presentable results on a day when you have no choice but to wash/wet your hair but don’t have time for the ribbon curl and/or diffusing.
I usually use that method every wash day, but emergencies happen!
Gena Marie actually did a video like this and timed herself - super helpful!
Thank you for going over the diffusing techniques again!! I always feel like Im tweaking what I do with each video which is awesome!!
I have type 3c/4a curls and my rake and shake is just linear - gotta try both directions !!! Great tips! I also have higher /medium porosity. The rake and shake is so much healthier - less stress on hair - meaning reduced trims in the long run for him - I’m hoping
I would love to see a video on how much - or how to apply heat protectant spray for best protection
I use the rake and shake method... when I can get my hair cut by a curly specialist, it's a Ouidad trained stylist. He does the rake and shake method... I think my hair has too many layers for the ribbon curling, plus it makes my roots flat... With the rake and shake, I get tons of volume and my curls are tighter and spring from my scalp.
I love your brush styling method. The ribbon curls are so defined. My long curls used to be so stringy but now they are so curly & bouncy thanks to you! (The outtakes are so funny at the end 😂)
I have short curly hair and I prefer rake and shake because brush styling stretches out my roots and flattens my hair. If my curl pattern was tighter I could see how ribbon curls would be better.
First video of yours I've watched and the most information I've recieced from any curly video. Watching transformations are great but learning how to care for my curly hair is priceless. THANK YOU, THANK YOU SUB FOR LIFE! ❤😁
I love the definition that I get from the Ribbon Curl Technique but the shrinkage is intense on my curl type. So I usually Finger Style. It doesn't control frizz as well or give the best clumping but I personally favor the length and movement with Finger Styling more, at least currently! Both are great and as my hair grows, I could definitely see switching up styling styles.
Styling techniques for fine, wavy hair!!!!
Hey Girls! Melissa here with Zazzy Bandz, and I have wavy hair, so I do a lot of squishing to get curls, plenty of water, and then gel, and I use my Denman brush to evenly distribute the gel, then I squish, squish, squish, and finally I use a t-shirt to plop or I use it to squish out excess water before diffusing. I was amazed that brushing through even my wavy hair was so effective for good definition. Of course, you know I then throw in a Zazzy Bandz to keep my hair out of my face. Thanks for a great tutorial showing both styles. I used to rake with my fingers, and brushing is more effective for me. You girls rock as always!
Love zazzy bands! I have wavy hair too.
@@JM-vj2sx aww thanks for sharing that! I am really happy to hear you love them. 🥰
Happy Texture Thursday!! I've been doing the rake and shake method for years!! Much love and happiness!! Xoxo 😘
I can definitely tell the difference from when I do the ribbon style versus just raking when my stylist does it at the salon. I have just cut my hair to much shorter, and I’d love to see how you’d style someone with shorter curls, top is about 6 inches.
Love your brush styling technique! I've tried the rake and shake but get more definition and bounce with the brush.
OMG I was a Quidad girl for such a long time until you girls came along!!! Thank you for opening my eyes to affordable products to get the same results as Quidad products. Keep up the great work ladies!!!
Can you use the brush technique on tighter curly hair textures too? Thank you ✨💖💃🏽
Yes! Just be aware that it will cause more shrinkage but can help with volume, clumping and definition. Personally it makes my hair about 12-15% shorter so I prefer Finger combing :) The tighter the curls you have, the smaller the section you'll want to take for the Brush Ribbon Technique.
Can’t beat the ribbon method 🎉❤
I wish I had someone to diffuse my hair! 😭 Love you ladies! Love the way your hair turned out Amanda! I love the brush / ribbon method... I learned from the best! 😉
Ribbon curls for life
You girls are a great team! I have wavy hair, 2C/3A. I do the ribbon curling horizontally. I’m going to to try vertically.
This outfit is chef's kiss on you Mell
Hey Mel. Looking great as always. You and Jayme Jo should do a video together
I once had my hair styled at a Ouidad flagship salon (there's only two in the USA) a few years ago. When doing the rake 'n shake method, the way the stylist gripped the ends of my hair to shake it caused the ends to come out completely straight. So, while I had a head full of amazing frizz-free curls, I looked like I'd gotten a bad perm with dozens of little fishtails at the end of every curl - not just a few - every one of them! I never did the rake 'n shake method after that.
i would love a video about all the styling techniques!
So pretty and such great curls! I miss my bouncy thick curls. I’ve lost my curl pattern and my hair is so thin now .
I knew what the results were gonna be since the beginning of the video lol love the tension of the ribbon technique.
Quick question….What are some long hair protective hairstyles to sleep in if you don’t have/don’t want to wear a bonnet? I just started my curly hair journey and these videos have been beyond helpful! Tysm!🤍
I have been using rake and shake for 20 years now. My hair texture is such that if I use a brush I get zero length! With rake and shake it looks like I have type three curls. If I use a brush, I end up with extremely tight curls that look like type 4C. If you have short tight curls, I recommend the rake and shake method to give you more length and curl separation.
Great video! ❤❤❤ What curl textured spray did you use? I can't find it in the description box.
I've been doing the ribbon curl method since learning it from your channel, Mell, so thanks!. I do find that my hair needs to be wet enough for it to work well, if there's not enough water and product in my hair I end up with a lot of frizz.
Thanks SEESTERS!! I a huge believer in the ribbon technique As a fine wavy gal. I’d love to see a video with y’all and India Batson ❤
Will you do more to help us wavy girls? I need some real help 😂😢 love yall ❤
Lol love the realness with using the dryer to dry the pits 😂
If you can’t afford a Dyson right now what diffuser would you recommend for a lower budget
Can we get an updated hair cuts to help complement your curly hair?
Pretty shocked about the difference, did not expected this :o I will probably stick to the ribbon technique and curl rolling technique. These remains my favorite techniques
I'm hooked, I love this channel.
Hey Mell!!!!! What is a good clarifying shampoo for product buildup that is causing irritated scalp and hair loss? I really need a recommendation please!!!
Yes Dyson because of Mel and Amanda I bought my 1st Dyson 🥰
How did it only take 4 mins to brush style? It takes me at least 20 and I have way less hair than Amanda 😅
How do you know how big the curl clumps should be?
What is the styling spray you put in before drying to set and fluff the hair? Please?
I’m with my olaplex 3 on my hair and this is just what I need it cause I was gonna try the rake and shake tecnic 😅
As always, love the comparison! The ribbon curls side is definitely my favorite! I've been using that method for a while now on my own curls! I love it so much! Maybe you remember the remix I made with your reel fairly recently?😁 I have fine curls and it works amazing for me! I don't like the rake & shake on my own curls. As you mentioned, it doesn't work for me
Mell I’m living for your shirt. I kinda want to do someone’s nails with that color combo and design orrrr maybe it could be a color combo for another perfect haircare collab 😉
I LOOOOOOOOOVE MY Dyson!!!!!!
Hi Mell and Amanda, first - thank you for your amazing content! Quick question: Mell said "the right section size for your curl pattern" (@ 12:41) and I was hoping you could explain that further?
I have chunky, loose curls/waves, and have issues with them clumping (I'll end up with 4 or 5 ringlets by the end of the day) and am wondering if I'm taking too big (or small) of sections? Thank you!
I've been to the Curl Suite in New York city, that's where the video was shot. Love them, my hair always looks wonderful 🎉
Mel your awesome!Thank you for all the info.. What texture product did you use?
I have fine 2b waves and brush styling does nothing to me. There is nothing to bounce back so I might try the Rake and Shake Technique. Thank you for the video.
I would like to see you brush style shorter hair … extra points if the model is over 50😂
Love your haircare/styling guidance for us wavy/curlies! I am going to adjust my brush styling to see if I can get similar results. Side question: What your thoughts are on the new-ish brand called Ceremonia. I'm obsessed with the brands signature scent and how some of the products make my hair feel, however, I am always weary of new hair brands on the market. Thank you for your guidance and quirkiness! 💜💚🧡 You're my fav curly RUclips channel because you educate us while making us laugh at the same time!
I’ve been contemplating a dyson for months.. years really… and I finally ordered one after watching this 😅 it’s for the curl health right? RIGHT?!
It’s the only dryer with diffuser that doesn’t make my hair frizzy. I work in the industry and had access to everything. Dyson is the best.
LOVE THAT FOR YOU! I know you won't regret it:)
@@alochetto3336 I’m so glad to hear that!! Frizz from diffusing is my biggest struggle I’m so excited to test it out
Hi! ive just tried your curl foaming gel for the first time and WOW. I live in the UK (my dad very kindly brought me some CFG back after his recent trip to NYC 😂) and I was just wondering if you were thinking of bringing your product to the UK? Please do! i dont know what im going to do when it runs out 😫😂
I also live in the UK and would also love if the curl foaming gel was available here! 😊
I also am hear in the UK please can you try to sell it on Amazon 😊
U have a video for everything lol! Wow after reading some Reddit comments, and being that Ouidad strong hold is best gel for me so far, I thought raking was for me. Honestly, even though I’m still not sure if brush styling is for my hair type, overall the results are just better. Especially for refreshing. Idk, I feel like a lot of ppl with my hair type say a comb is all they use or no brushing at all post conditioner though so I just don’t know 😅. Courtney’s method of plopping after everything is in doesn’t really work well for my top layers either.
What was the texture spray that you used on Amanda's hair?
Love your both curls so beautiful sisters ❤
Mel, please please please ribbon curl tutorial for dummies preferably in slow motion or just go slower? All things ribbon curl technique questions
I do the rake and shake and use the Dyson as well.
I love my Dyson too! Definitely worth the investment
Love the ribbon side best. Mell how is your hand that you broke, doing
Awesome video Mell!
Toward the end of the segment you mentioned that “Rake-And-Shake” may not be for those of us with fine or thin hair. Same for ribbon styling with a brush.
Would you suggest those of us with thin density and/or fine hair use a comb “ribbonesque” approach? Would be much slimmer sections.
It's my first time on this channel and I'm already loving the content I've seen so far (3 videos couting this one but I'll sure watch the rest)
I've been doing the brush styling for heck of a long time now (it's pretty common where I'm from so it's the one that was easier for me to learn to do on myself) but I didn't know it was also called ribbon curls and ngl I like this name ❤
I am ALWAYS reminded of Lucille Ball when I watch you, Mel. ❤
Hi Mel, thank you for this very informative video. What name is the texture spray that you used on your sister?
My thoughts too ! 👍
I think it may have been from AG Curl line.
How do you do the ribbon technique on looser curls??
Hi Mel! Where do you buy your clothes? I love all of your outfits!
have you used Davines products? curl building serum is so good
I know this is for the Dyson, but would love to see your thoughts on the Zuvi Halo dryer. Just saw it on Gothamista and looks interesting as claims to be healthier on the hair and more eco friendly.
Could you please consider a video about wooden hair brushes since the popularity is going up -- when, how, and why a curly person might use them?
I have wavy hair. I can get those princess curls going in places, but the front of my head has decided to be no more than wavy. I come out of my wash FABULOUS, but by the end of work, my curls have deflated. Why? Is it too much product or not enough? I use a leave-in, gel, and crunch with a little oil.
Try non sticky hair spray after styling a lot of people swear it works
Try a harder hold gel, and leave in as much crunch as you can tolerate. You don't have to scrunch out ALL the crunch. I like my hair to always be a little crispy - it lasts longer that way.
And try less oil 😉
In my experience, my curls fall out when I don’t dry my hair enough. Like, every time 😂 😂
i am so struggling on how to sleep with my hair, I sleep on my right side with a bonnet & silk pillow case yet some of my curls go flat on the right side 😭😭
Can we get a how to brush your hair, how often, if you live in fear of losing more hair scenarios aka in different conditions and circumstances.
An in.. in general & how often .. as well as under circumstances of fragility and in recon hair saving statuses.
❤
You should only brush when wet with curly hair. For that reason I only brush my conditioner through and then my styling products. I never brush without a lubricant to protect my hair (otherwise I experience breakage and my curls may stretch out as well).
When it comes to snarls, I don't get them unless I really mess with my hair; so washing and styling (once to twice a week for me) is quite easy and pain free.
If I want to have a cool hair style I'll put on a cool hat (majorly berets and newsboy caps, but really any cool hat that's easy to put on and doesn't encourage frizz). I used to use little clips a lot, but I started getting migraines from it.
Gonna try the ribbon technique next time 🙌
Where is Mell's shirt from???
I like Mels technique bounce and volume. I would us the rake and shake for shorter curly hair, especially if you ha e a lot of shrinkage imo.
Any technic is faster when someone else does it lol. The stylist can see the whole head and correct quickly
Love your videos! Could you make a video about products you’d recommend for coarse wavy hair? A lot of wavies on RUclips have fine hair (for my coarse 2b hair, I currently use thick gels made for type 3-4 hair). I really want to find a product I can try this ribbon styling technique with!
Edit: I always find that heavier products instead of light weight products work for me not sure what’s up with that. I have medium to low porosity hair, medium to thick density, and naturally frizzy and a bit oily hair
She typically recommends products based on your hair porosity vs how curly/wavy it is. Maybe look at her videos on that and see if suggestions help?
I've tried the rake and shake for fine and low density and it doesn't work, I love the ribbon technique it always work on my hair.
