- Greataxe isn't one of the most popular weapon class in Elden Ring, but it has a surprising number of good choices when it comes to infusable options. Just how should you choose the perfect greataxe for your build?

Two things I forgot >.> smh Chrightt (at least I'm remedying this ASAP!)
#1 2H heavy jump attack of butchering is also different (it has the same animation as the heavy attack)
#2 The Longhaft Axe has a 18% more hyper armor for its 2-handed attacks (i.e. 70 instead of 59 of regular greataxes for 2HR1)
Longshaft axe was the only good great axe on the first patch because of its reach and it turns out it has increased hyper armor? Oh yeah I know what im farming tonight.
Another important one: the 2-handed Rusted Anchor has some ridiculous MV's uncomparable to any other weapons in the game (R1 MV = 120), making it the strongest axe by far! (as long as you're 2-handing)
@@reflexassassin ? Did you perhaps check the wrong sheet. Rusted Anchor MV for 2HR1 1: 103, 2HR1 2: 104 (same as all other greataxes)
@@Chrightt he probably test it but forgot about the counter damage.
this feels like a very (internally) balanced weapon class. You could almost pick for superficial flavor and not lose too much. And the flavor here is great.
case in point, i did a full run with a viking cosplay using the regular greataxe (and the kaiden armor) on a charge attack strength build (braggarts roar, charge and roar talisman, charge attack physick) and it was amazignly strong. you can 2 shot every non major boss fight and, for example, the tree sentinels outside leyndell took 3 bonks each. these videos are amazing if you want to squeeze every bit of performance, or just for curiosity, but dont feel discouraged to use a weapon you like. you could finish this game with a dagger.
I think the Longhaft also has boosted hyper armor, even with some ashes of war, so that's worth mentioning.
wait really? where does it say?
(looked it up, fextralife says "Compared to the other greataxes, this weapon has a higher hyperarmor modifier when two-handing." so idk theres like a 50% chance it has lmao)
@@archie143 in the description of the axe says it.
It has greathammer hyper armor
You affirmed everything I already thought I knew, and I even learned a couple things I didn’t previously know. This is why I’m subscribed to you, always the most point blank information when it comes to Elden Ring’s weapons. I look forward to your post-DLC weapon videos.
I have an RL95 invader with 45 arcane + base requirements on an occult omenkiller cleaver because of this video and i love it. Mostly invading Shunning Grounds for 'roleplay reasons.' Love this channel.
The rusted anchor's pierce damage for PvE purposes has been glossed over. It is *the* ideal dragonkiller weapon (and some heavily armored foes like bell bearing hunters and night's cavalry), as they all tend to have 10-30% less pierce resistance even before counter hits get factored in. No other pierce-type weapon can make as much use of an attack window as an anchor jump slam. And it is buffable with dragonwound grease.
Or you could just use a longhorn AOW twice and delete ER’s entire dragon population.
Are counter hits the same as guard counters ??
Too bad it looks like trash
I gotta say , the hero class equipment plus the standard greataxe is one hell of a bling combo. Makes you look like an authentic unga bunga.
longshaft master race reporting in, does 500% more damage with knight's cavalry armor set
Simply meeting the weapon requirements
Longhaft*
I called it Longshaft for months before realizing it’s something else entirely
@@Rexis102 it's spirit name is longshaft 😎

Thank you for all of the information you've shared over this series!
My greatbow build originally used the winged greathorn and commander's standard as weapon art sticks for support, but they're also rather fun when paired together as a switch-up.
As a matter of fashion souls, there's something to be said about the tribal feel of a winged greathorn slung on your back.
Love your weapon analyses! I’ve been waiting for a greataxe one for a long time
Started a new character in anticipation of the expansion and decided on great axes, which led me to your video. This is exceptionally good work! Thank you!
Woo finally! I recently finished my Viking playthrough. I used the OG Great Axe and I admit, the shorter range was quite annoying at times but was satisfying absolutely smashing bosses heads in!
So excited for the DLC and whatever you break down whenever it happens. Always interesting information.
Fantastic content once again Chrightt. Thank you for this 🙏
Appreciate your work a lot. You are my go-to for actual, reliable info for this game. Thank you!
Congratz on finishing the series!
Also, hooray! for the fixed aspect ratio!
Another great video sir ! I really liked the new design when comparing the weapons infusions 😎👍
Just a side note for Longhaft axe ,
as you and others here mentioned , Longhaft is the only great axe with poise value of 70 instead of 59 ... Its almost as good as a great hammer ( 72 )
That means that if you get 112 poise , you can hyperarmour with standard R1/R2 through all great weapons 1hand moveset ( 1h r1 , 1hr2 , run , roll , etc ) and fist 2hr2
Thats all gs , cgs , gspear , ga , excluding great hammers ofc ...
( other great axes can hyper through only 1hr1 of the above weapons and thats with 119 poise )
thank you crightt for all the hard work
You're the GOAT Chrightt, these videos are an A+ every time 💯
fun thing about the butchering knife is it has basically the same stat requirements (1 less dex) as the golden order greatsword, so if youre using that, then you can definitely use butchering knife with golden land on the same build
Chrightt you rock sir thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!
Combining the Rusted Anchor with the Pickaxe (which power-stances with Greataxes) is a fun combo that hits VERY hard, add the Spear Talisman to that for extra fun.
Also Poison is a great Affinity for the Butchering Knife on an Dex/Arc build, at 18/45/45 (Str/Dex/Arc) it's only 1 AR weaker than Keen, Plus Poisonous Mist. Enemies standing in the mist count as 'taking damage' even if they can't be Poisoned, so you get healed while enemies are just standing in it. Technically Bleed is a viable affinity but you don't get anywhere near as much Poison buildup on the weapon as with Poison.
This is what helped my beat the final boss as Radagon spent a LOT of phase 1 Poisoned and a point-blank Poisonous Mist Ash of War to Elden Beast, dealing 700+ damage with the swing itself while creating a 'healing mist' that restored my health.
Other great skills to combine the HP upon hit effect of the Butchering Knife and Great Stars:
1. Golden Land
2. Waves of Darkness
3. Prelate's Charge
4. Chilling Mist (Str/Int or Dex/Int depending on weapon)
5. Wild Strikes
Eruption is also a good ash of war, it heals you when enemies stand in the lava
YUS
EVERYTHING I HAVE BEEN NEEDING
Power stanced Omenkiller Cleavers were my Boss killers during my Greataxe run. Fire mainhand and cold offhand for bleed and frost procs. I stopped leveling at 80 leaving me with little investment into damage stats, so the bleed and frostbite were a nice boost.
Love this guy.
This is the video you are looking for
Great guide as usual! Thanks a lot you da best
🙌 np, glad you enjoy it!
Best breakdown video 👍
That's interesting about the soul stifler, I was wondering why the list of debuffs page on the wiki listed it as 30% when a quick test showed it's 15%. Thanks for the vid as always!
Oh how I've waited for this one
thank you chrightt
They improved a lot in patch 1.09. Especially the Crescent Axe had its r2 speed increased and I love it!
Still sad there’s no Black Knight Great Axe moveset in any of these.
Prelates hammer has it. In dark souls 3 you gotta consider those ‘great axes’ as ultra axes, so colossal axes/ hammers/weapons in this game
@@johndang897 Well it only has the two handed r2, not all of the BKGA's moveset. It was so unique and refreshing.
@@wolvenedvard3049 It’s so sad that it ever was unique to have an axe you’d use as an axe instead of as a funnily shaped hammer -_-
@@nathanjora7627 Exactly!
Moveset was banned by Ranni (doesn't want mobs launched to her moon)
Congrats on getting through all the weapon classes! Can’t wait for you to have to do it all over again since many weapons are already rebalanced and we’re going to get new ones in the DLC. Maybe just make a video for each DLC if they’re similar size to DS3’s DLCs and revisit everything once active development stops Lol.
But other than that obvious way to go, now that you’ve covered everything well enough for the time being, what’s the plan for channel content if any?
I'm planning on making more build videos (including new-gen crit build after covering what is best for poise damage spam), do some requests from supporters, and probably should do the incantation tier list. And I'm planning on playing Diablo 4 too, so I will likely cover optimizing over there too while waiting for ER DLC. Will also cover any update/balancing changes in patch note videos and if DLC is taking very long I will also cover some major changes from the patch notes too! Also maybe whatever fromsoft releases like armored core 6 although I got no idea if I'll like that game (never played the previous ones).
Finally, a video for our cousins, the greataxes!
A warm hello from the greathammer family. :)
This is a great video for my upcoming attempt at a berserker meme build. All I need now is a video breaking down roars. You wouldn't happen to have one would you?
very nice video, coming into elden ring from dark souls 3 as a pvp enjoyer i was hoping that the Crescent Axe/Axe of Godrick was going to be the Black Knight Greataxe equivalent with the charged r2 shenanigans, particularly on wakeup. sadly the backswing doesn't appear to have a hitbox, which is something i hope Fromsoft implements in the future.
but for now, Executioners Axe/Longhaft Axe my beloved.
Yeah D: the cool dragging animation needs the Ghiza Wheel buff so it can get a hitbox earlier.
ah yes, the blackknight greataxe
i used it as spear of the church to great succes, the AR was like 850, enough to 2 hit a lot of players witht he fast strikes of the weapon
Be hopeful, they added a lot of weapon detection on the projectile ash of wars after all.
With Elden Ring they seem much more willing to do such changes.
I just bought your book. I can't wait to read it!
ty! Hope you enjoy it.
Omg Wat, Golden Land works w the Butchering Knife's hp reg?? That is what I love about these vids, I always learn something new!!
The Crescent Moon r2 is a decent roll catch if your opponent rolls toward you instead of away.
Powerstanced Great Omenkiller Cleaver with Occult, its awesome
I have my left-handed one infused with blood and my right-handed one heavy with blood flame blade. An L1 or jump attack into sword dance is a mean ass combo
Weird, I thought you talked about these before. I remember you saying something about the uncharged heavy of the Butcher Knife having good DPS and spam-ability. Must be remembering something from curved swords that shared the same heavy.
The omen cleaver
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAA GREATAXES
thank you so much
Ive been using the gargoyle 'great' axe for my fth str playthrough. The only reason why you would ever run it is if you really need the meet the weight limit, and at the highest level i dont think itd be an issue at all. It reminds me of the lions great axe from dark souls 2. Basically you have a lightweight weapon with decent hyper armour that becomes obsolete at high level. It should also be mentioned that its scaling is excellent, but greataxes all have high base so thats why it doesnt really help it that much.
I just want to say thanks for all of these videos Chrightt. Also I would like to enjoy your book, but I only listen to books, is there any audio option for it yet? I don't mind AI voices if that's the best way to enjoy it.
For me personally move set is everything. Crescent Moon Axe for the win.
another banger, would it bepossible to add the frame data in the corner of the screen when you show off the moveset - so we can see hyperarmor and stuff
Makes sense. I'll see if I can stuff it in without making it look too cluttered (cause the frame data text is pretty small to read on screen without stretching it out)
Hi Chrightt, love your videos! What is the build calculator you use? I love the starter class percentile list on the right hand side.
I use multiple calcs. For this video I used a new one only for calculating weapons: www.tarnished.dev/weapon-calculator
My older ones are Cryptid's spreadsheet (on my discord cause it gets updated all the time).
I prefer Crescent Moon Axe over Longhaft because it looks better ) Heavy attack is a just a small bonus.
maximum elden bling I see.
Pick warrior, grab the greataxe, go to town in limgrave bopping everything in front of you once you have the strength (and/or axe talisman). I slapped sacred blade on it to start, which helped farm the executioner's greataxe.
Finally!!!
Chrightt I would love to see how you would optimize a build for the occult brick hammer, since it retains a B in strength along with an A in arcane.
Wespon scaling letters can be deceiving. Always look at the actual AR of the weapon rather than the letter grade.
The Ripple Cresent Halberd has an S in arcane but has low AR compared to other halberds with only an A scaling in a stat.
I only ever use 3 greataxes, the greataxe because it has the highest physical AR of all "great" weapons, the crescent because it's the coolest and the omen cleaver for status application. All the others look too weird to be used
'fishing for counter hits' automatic thumbs up, hook line and sinker
The only reason I picked the executioner is because that's Dragonslayer greataxe from ds3, my main weapon. Dragonslayer greataxe has the highest R1 in the game. But I still didn't know the AR scale in elden ring.
Is spiked caestus still best with occult after 1.09?
Does the fact that greataxes have their crits divided into 2 separate damage instances affect what the total bonus damage of an executioner's crit would be, or how much gets eaten by absorption?
Yes, when crit damage is split in two each instance will have to go through defense on their own (negation is just an overall reduction so this part is unchanged regardless of how many hits). The lower each AR * MV is the more it is affected by defense as well.
Rusted Anchor + Jar Cannon = THE ADMIRAL
Does pierce dmg not get bonuses when counterattacking if the weapon has infusions like flame?
It does , but only the physical damage part will get the bonus , making it a trifle buff , but still a buff ... if you want numbers , you are looking at about 30 ish extra damage
The deception of all time!
lets go thx lot
This man just said soul stif-ler not soul sty-fler. Iove it
I don't really run these as I find the timing frustrating, but thank you nonetheless
Well, now that you've finished all the weapon classes, it's time for From to shadowdrop the DLC on us. :)
I'm a simple man. I see a Chrightt video, I click.
You left out that the butchering knifes 2h jumping heavy is also a unique attack like the light and heavy attacks
ASKDJLSALKDJ forgot it behaves like the CGS.
what is a counter hit?
Btw, Chrightt I heard that the Longhaft Axe has _extra hyper armor._ Where this supposed hyper armor is, if it exists, etc I don't know. Just something I heard awhile ago that you might know something about*
I wrote it in my pinned comment.
@@Chrightt 👍
dammit, i spend a ton of smithing stones on the greataxe because i'm convinced it's the only one with more charged heavy damage, and it turns out to be one of the weakest ones out of all of them
i just killed radahn and regal ancestor on NG, too, so i'm not gonna be able to get those stones back so easily
That's not how "stifler" is pronounced. The base word is stifle, not stiff.
gotcha
after all the patches are these analyses still accurate?
Is the weapon reach graphic updated for 1.09?
Yes, the range is unchanged for greataxes.
Ash of wars use 1 hand AR as oppose to 2hand AR given you meet 1 hand requirements? I always thought it took 2 hand ar for weapon ash of wars like sword dance, giant hunt, and something like godrick took weapon upgrade level as well as your strength and dexterity rating, and not the actual AR of Godricks axe itself.
It depends but yeah. For most ashes of war which involve hitting something with your weapon (lion's claw, giant hunt, stamp, unsheathe), 1 handed AR is used to compute damage. The exception to this afaik are roar ashes of war which change your heavy attacks. 2Handed roar heavies use the 2 Handed AR.
@@common_undead what about if you can only meet requirements if you 2 hand? It seems like it takes 2 hand ar in that case, otherwise one hand you lose a lot of damage?
@@johndang897I would be interested in knowing the answer to your follow up question as well. Good question 👍
I'd honestly prefer if they focused on improving the base game weapons first, rather than adding a ton more weapons.
Like giving Gargoyle axe the unique slam the mobs use and making The Greataxe have the highest AR of it's class.
Winged Greathorn has only one use case - debuffing PvE and destroying it in next 30 seconds with hard swap to any good weapon xD
debuff lasts for 60 seconds!
@@Chrightt yes, but the most efficient use is about stacking buffs multiplicatively so you need to do it faster than in minute.
Anyway it's kinda useless in PvP (what I guess is metadata about)
Are counter hits the same as guard counters ??
you mean from pierce damage? No, they are different. Explained here: ruclips.net/video/NaAa7cSPqW4/видео.html
@@Chrightt ty for clearing that up
AWWWWWWW YEEEAHHH BOY
I'm confused as to why quality affinity is so bad. There are Somber Weapons (Axe of Godrick or Winged Greathorn, right here in this video, case in point) that rely on a quality stat spread, but for normal weapons, it's always a bad choice unless your stats are absolutely cranked. Did the devs intend for it to be that much worse? Did they decide that a damage hit was warranted in exchange for having the stats/versatility to use almost any non-magical weapon? It feels like making a quality build is a waste, when you could choose mainly STR or DEX, and invest in a magic-oriented stat to use some other special weapons instead. Doing that doesn't feel like it punishes you, it feels like it rewards you because you will then have access to magic, AND special weapons that suit your stats, AND elemental affinities for standard weapons.
It just doesn't make any sense. I think if you are willing to split your stats and go hard into both STR and DEX with no magic, you should deal a lot of fucking physical damage as a tradeoff. Instead, a much simpler and more efficient STR build can achieve better damage with most weapons. That's pretty dumb. That being said, I made a quality build because I wanted to fool around with Axe of Godrick, Ghiza's Wheel, Sword of Milos, Watchdog's Staff, and a few others. I want to see for myself what benefits the Quality Build can yield. I want to do a comparison with throwable weapons (since those tend to scale with both STR and DEX pretty well) and such when I reach more of an end-game level. But I will say that Ghiza's Wheel and Sword of Milos are absolute winners. They are great. Axe of Godrick is fun too but I want to compare it to a crescent moon axe with Hoarah Loux's Earthshaker to see if the Godrick axe has anything unique to offer, or if it's just worse.
Babe wake up Elden ring stat guy posted
Chrightt the greataxe is the highest damage greataxe why have you discarded it so early?
If you've skipped to the end you should go back and look at the AR comparisons (roughly 1% higher AR at best) for 15~20% of range loss.
greataxe best weapon
Currently going trough my 1st elden ring playtrough and I really want to make a viking ish build and use a greataxe (because I never used one before in any other souls games) I was thinking godrick axe just because it looks so good. Idk about performance tho
Yo! Great timing dude, I have- well.. had zero information of anything about Elden Ring other than tiny bits of lore. I've been saving up a crap ton of money just to be able to buy this game till my Dad made a deal with me, any grade thats basically 96% or over will result in a fat wad of cash and I studied the hell out of it. Now I'm starting my first playthrough and I decided to go full strength with the axe weapons. Been having so much fun lately, the small stories are so cool and sad. I knew it was coming but it made me sad to come back to Irina's dead body and her Father crying over it.
Thanks for sharing your story :)
@@Chrightt thanks for listening :D cant wait for the "Who Asked" replies XD
Did you realized you studied bc you are capable of it, after the incentive?
@@Wishmaster145 No I already knew I was capable of studying. The incentive was just there to really get me going. Dad was kind enough to even let it.
Stifle is pronounced like rifle
Yeah, someone told me about it >.> thanks!
Laughs in Executioners
So, I'm assuming attack speed isn't a significant factor here? I mention this because I know for some other weapons (I'm thinking of Katanas personally) the attack speed can make up for the lack of reach for me. Or is that just not as useful in PvP as it is in PvE?
If they share the same moveset they share the same attack speed. The frame data of each weapon is set to each individual animation. For example, all greataxes share the same light chain which means that their light attacks all have the same 15 frame startup. This is the same for katanas or any of the other weapon classes. If you're feeling faster with your katana on any moveset it has that's the same as other katanas it is purely placebo.
@@Chrightt Really! That's very interesting. Thanks!
Crescent Axe is the best one simply because it's a Dane Axe.
Yes brother
The regular greataxe has the HIGHEST ar for cold infusion on a STR/INT build. It is the best option and I strongly disagree that the slight range difference outweighs having the best INT scaling.
If you want to cast spells and use a greataxe, use the regular one.
howdy
I WON'T stand for this anti-Gargoyle PROPAGANDA.
Or rather, I'm just here to say that the offhand gargoyle (regular and black) make genuine use of their low weight and almost regular-axe like profile as a hard-hitting offhand option. Don't discount them entirely, they can really pull their weight in the right setup. The low scaling and high base damage of the black gargoyle weapons really suggest using them one-handed, while the regular axe becomes a very light weight ash of war stick. They're far from meta-defining, but don't scoff at them. They are perfectly capable weapons, just don't use them alone.
The problem with them is the endurance cost to upgrade them to something better to get more AR and a ton more length is just too cheap. That is why they're eliminated. If they had the same or more AR than equivalent options of higher weight, that would be a different story. But, sadly they just lose out on everything except weight which is a very easy fix by shifting stat points.
