Some things to note for common comment inquiries:
#1 Flail does strike damage. Yes, it does, but so do hammers, great hammers, colossal weapons, whips, fists, and a lot off extra different movesets. This is not exclusive to flail nor does it have a bonus like piercing damage with counter-hit mechanics, so it is not mentioned.
#2 Horseback flail attack. This is a great move for flail (I agree). The problem is the majority of the game (arguably the harder parts too) and any form of co-op is not available with horseback attacks, so I tend to not discuss mounted attacks in detail.
#3 Guard Counter: This is more of a middle-ground thing for flail, doing more poise damage than lightweight weapons (shares poise with hammer). It even deals the same amount of poise damage as some of the heavier weapons. This is indeed a good point for flails, but keep in mind the guard counter is still slower than faster weapons and deals less damage than heavier weapons. So, it is more of a middle-ground guard counter. It doesn't necessarily make it very outstanding. It probably feels exceptionally good because the rest of the one-handed flail moveset is garbage.

      >flail does strike damage, but so do hammer, colossal weapons, whips, and fists
This is pretty frankly an irrelevant point for Dex build, which are the only builds that want to be using flails anyways. Hammers and colossal weapons are only good for pure Strength builds, and whips and fists tend to have an extremely poor Ash of War selection due to their unusual weapon designs.
Flails by contrast have the same dex scaling of whips/fists but also a larger repertoire of Ashes to use, including the extremely powerful Wild Strikes and Lion's Claw ashes.
Lion's Claw in particular is one of the best ashes of war in the game due to its ludicrously high stance damage, with Flame of the Redmanes being the only skill that comes close to matching its knockdown strength. Flame is much less useful though, as far as I'm concerned, because it has a much shorter reach overall. Lion's Claw both launches you forward to allow you to attack from a distance, has hyper armor during the animation, and virtually always triggers a knockdown against human-sized opponents.

Once someone looks through the charts they realize flails were basically copypasted from hammers, then slightly tweaked
Pretty much every argument for flails, including guardcounter, is really just arguing for maces
Making any hammer keen will do 99% of what a "dex flail" does, infusions get underestimated -- someone asked if 60/60 quality would be a good way to rock his desired dagger+zwei style, it turns out 20/80 with both keen (ie keen zweihander) is stronger even with 20 less levels, just keen it
      GC? hammer
      strike? hammer
      dex flail? keen hammer
Everything about flails are hammers when you peel off the sticker and read the original label

The thing in the gameplay loop of Elden Ring I enjoy the most is stance break and riposte. I mean, that's where my dopamine kicks in. And in this department flails are pretty shiny and even have the area where they are the best pick -- guard counters.
Flails are literally best guard counter weapons and no other weapon can beat them in this department. On guard counter they deal Colossal Sword-level of poise damage (outclassed only with Blunt Colossal Weapons), while having straight sword-level speed of guard countering. The latter is extremely important, as it dramatically improves the number of occurrences when you can go for guard countering without being stopped with the next enemy attack.
So no. Flails don't suck. They even have an area where they excel.

    • @green929392

    • @_claymore
      @_claymore 2 года назад +2

not disagreeing with your overall points, but I think your summary is a bit misleading. yes, flails have good guard counter attacks - but everything else sucks. and in PvP you'll usually not land guard counters very often, if at all.
and having a single, slightly above average move doesn't make up for the lack of useful moves overall.
I used the Nightrider Flail for some time during my PvE playthrough and it was lots of fun, but sadly in PvP, flails aren't a very good option.

I went through my first play through with the night rider flail. One thing I noticed is that the flail will swing in an arc pretty far to your side and almost behind you. You can catch enemies as they move off to your side, and that can be a real saving grace.
Also, don’t overlook the way it laughs off shields. Shields can block it, but it doesn’t make your weapon bounce and pause like it does with swords. You can batter shields down with brute force.

I picked the Nightriders flail just because it's the new weapon type and so i wanted to try it out and i LOVE it!

  • @Armameteus
    @Armameteus 2 года назад +1

One of my favourite things to do with powerstanced Nightrider flails is a fire/ice infusion. It works on a wide variety of enemies because strike has high poise damage and doesn't bounce, allowing you to break through high defence to apply ice status and then immediately dispel it with the fire flail to allow ice to build up again. Flame of the Redmanes on the fire flail lets you break their poise even faster, allowing for frosty ripostes.
Really, as with many weapon classes and movesets in this game, there's a difference between the raw statistics and practical application. There's other factors to take into account when using any given weapon that don't directly apply to the hard statistics of said weapon, which can leave noticeable gaps in a build when focused too much on a single weapon/weapon type - gaps that can theoretically be filled with other weapon types. When used properly, flails can shred through almost anything faster and with fewer innate drawbacks other weapon types have, especially in the strike weapon class thanks to their faster attack speed than most of their contemporaries. This is especially true in regards to guard-counters.
All that said, this is still a very useful video to get you into the right mindset to use them properly. There's definitely going to be diminishing returns on the furthest edges of min-maxing though, so it's best to use this knowledge to inform your choices on a weapon around a build, not a build around a weapon.

Tried the heads flail you get from necromancer. Maybe my int was wack, but that thing just didnt feel great.
I loved how often you stagger mofos with flails, almost as hard as a heavier two handed weapon. Unfortunately i felt that the jumping heavy was THE BEST dps. Not sure if thats true or not just felt that way.
I also love that they bled and were strike weapons cause i rarely came across anything i did just wipe.
Lastly, not sure how important this is to people.
But flails are my favorite weapon on horse back. Really good damage that staggers. Oh, and another useless bit. They DESTROY the little rock things on the walking mausoleum when on horse back.
I used the dual psion swords, meh.
I finally upgraded from using them exclusively when i got placidusax thrusting sword, and the bleed great thrust sword? The one that has the twisty blade, and the cool soul calibur raphael ash of war? Forgot the name.
Anyways, i didnt hate them, i actually enjoyed them. Their range was a bit iffy to gauge, but overall i never felt at a disadvantage and i could slay most enemies in one or two heavy attacks. Worst thing about flails for me. Is that i dont know of one you can get in the early game that lets you upgrade via somber stone. That hurts flails alot in my opinion.
    Alright, imma shut up 🤣

I use flails as a utility weapon basically just for Crystilians. It’s not the only striking weapon, obviously, but for it’s balance of speed and stamina I find it to be my fav. Especially when summoning Mimic Tear to double up on the beat down, it never fails.

Currently running a chainlink flail that's lightning infused. Gets C Scaling at +4 which is nearly unrivaled by any non dagger weapon for lightning scaling.
Using lightning strike aow for extra damage. Blunt is good. Lightning is good.
Range seems better than expected tbh. Seems to be higher than most males anyways.

When I first started Elden Ring I went with flails because I got the Nightrider Flail early on and because it had a high dex requirement I assumed it was a powerful weapon. The main problem with the flails is the lack of range. The bleed and the stagger are the main advantages, although the flails are slightly too slow to take full advantage of the stagger. In the end I restarted with a new character and decided to use other weapons. I went with claws; they have short range too, but they are fast and build bleed much better. I think short range is much harder though - you always end up taking more damage.
Ultimately though, the lack of ashes of war is what kills flails for me. It's also a problem for claws, fists and whips. Potentially great weapons hindered by being more of an afterthought in the game.

Flail on its own is pretty rubbish, so I dual held knightriders flail and normal flail. Double jump hit is very strong. Prod bleed is quite good, but it’s not really a blood build. Spinning slash is very good on big enemies in certain circumstances as well and can melt bosses if you can stun them. Godskin bosses were really easy

Flails are uber with a shield. They have a very long reach with their guard counter they hit with more impact than most one-handed weapons in the game. Spinning weapon is hilarious on flails. Especially the chain link flail. Because the movement of the weapon's hitbox appears to leave a white trail as it spins, flails do this funny thing where, because the flail appears to have physics that affect the hitbox, the white trail just kinda... flops around all funny like.
Overall, it takes an absurd amount of effort to make flails viable in PvE and PvP. I like to use them, but man does it feel like punching yourself sometimes, more often than not reminding yourself that you could be making life so much easier for yourself.

I've also found that you do have an advantage that a lot of people might not even think of when it comes PVP with flails. It's the fact that they're NOT meta and they're super rare to find in PVP. I'm running dual flails with flame art ashes of war, a Knight's great sword with flame arts, and the giants talisman for my Giants Flame build. When I swap from my sword to my flails more often than not most people will try to parry me and I get to punish them for it. They're not the flashiest weapons or the strongest, but the amount of free damage you get because people don't know how to counter a flail is pretty solid. I don't think it'll ever get to be popular, but if you want to confuse most players into baiting certain attacks I think Flails are the way to go.

One thing you didn't mention is that flails have arguably the best guard counter in the game, both in speed and poise damage. If you're going for a shield-centric build, they are a strong source of strike damage and bleed. And while they don't have the best ash of war selection, they're still able to use Wild Strikes and Lion's Claw, which imo is good enough. I still think they're largely unimpressive, but they still perform reasonably well.

I’m surprised more people aren’t interested in great hammers. They have great movesets either 1 handed or two as well as dual wielding. I don’t like the pickaxe rolling light attacks though and it gets a different two handed heavy which I don’t like. Both the single handed and two handed rolling light attacks look great and are fun to use.
The great axes get the same dual wielded moveset as great hammers as well but great axes don’t hit as well as great hammers.
I think most people aren’t talking about them because they usually go for a bleed build or some other super high damage instead of lore stagger weapons. Even if the moveset imo is better.
Normal hammers have crap movesets same with flails. They have the same dual wielded moveset as well which isn’t great.
Are you going to do a great hammer comparison?

Flails are such a cool weapon. They're so satisfying to wield.
At times it's a shame the game is really focused on the over the top armour and weapons. I wish there was a way to turn early weapons into higher end versions. Mainly because the basic flail really fits the simple, understated, cleric type build I initially envisioned, that didn't have any fancy gear but relied on faith to give them power.
Another thing is that in real life, flails, maces and hammers were generally more popular in battle that swords, as they provided more force against armour and shields, wearing down enemies stamina and defense. As well as potentially being able to cause damage through blunt force.

    • @jaydenlobbe7911
      @jaydenlobbe7911 2 года назад

Maces and Hammers yes, Flails not so much, any Weapon with it's striking end attached via a Chain or Rope is always going to be outperformed by a Weapon with a Solid Construction, this is because with a Weapon like a Flail you will always lose Kinetic Energy the moment it strikes, because there is nothing driving that Energy into your target, this is also why Nunchucks are an ineffective Weapon that are easily outperformed by any decently sized Stick you could find lying about outdoors
