I found your video just as I was reaching the depths of despair and I'm deeply grateful! As a side note, the auto start/stop feature is the worst example of corporate overreach and virtue signaling that I have ever seen. It's no different than having someone reach into your car and turn off the ignition when you're at a stop light. Shame on ford for letting the marketing guys take them over the cliff. And shame on the cowardly engineers who didn't push back on management when they first proposed this stupid idea. I would not have purchased a ford had I known of the start/stop feature. Yes it has to be for the model of your vehicle. The "thing in the middle" is inserted into your car's communications network. The messages are often unique to the model of the vehicle. So the start/stop device IDs for different cars and trucks will be different. For example, I have a Ford Maverick. I wouldn't expect the F150 thing to work in my Maverick for this reason. It basically works like >> Push button, the button talks to the network "Hi I'm the ASS button (auto-start-stop) on the Ford Maverick [device ID 12345] and I just disengaged my ASS." This is what the device "remembers." It remembers that it sends a "disengage" or "engage" message to the car communication network bus. There may be a way, using forscan, to make the F150 device work! I recall a video where a guy installed an upgraded temp control device and it didn't work until he went into forscan and changed the device ID for the temp control device. Then the device worked fine. I imagine you could do the same thing by telling your system the ASS button ID is that of the F150 and it too will begin to work. Now, what that device ID is, I don't know. There are F150 owners out there who could probably ID what forscan settings are needed to make that change. But the device is essentially "spoofing the ASS button" or probably directing a specific mode setting (not a toggle) somehow. Alternatively, the seller of the F150 device might also be able to help you reprogram the thing for your model so that it spoofs the device you have.
The two wires that you disconnected is to your BMS which is your battery monitor sensor. I am not sure that's a good thing to do, you may overcharge your battery or under charge it. I have to do some reach on this. How is your battery? I would think just pulling the fuse to that component would be safer for your battery. Did you connect a OBD2 scanner to see what happens. I just ordered one to pull codes. did your battery light come on? Thanks for the video it was good. It got me thinking.
I owned the Ranger for 8 months with NO battery problems. It's a ground sensing wire, I am sure it tells the computer that the charges is sufficient to restart the engine, thereby making it ok to shut the engine off. When you disconnect that wire, the computer won't shut the engine off. It is NOT a charging wire. Read through the comments, this is a safe method of disabling the Auto Start/Stop feature and is easily returned to factory specs! Thanks for watching!
@@HowToHeaven The reserach I did said that disconnecting that sensor also disables the entire BMS. BMS is used to monitor the altenator charge for the battery. I want to disable auto stop, but an fearful of also disabling BMS.
I disabled mine by plugging a little nightlight used in my bathroom into the 120 volt outlet between the seats in back of the console. If the light has a light sensor make sure you block it out with tape to make sure it stays on. Don't worry, the outlet shuts off when the car shuts off.
This works? It will disable if that port is in use? I have a Ford Escape and don’t want to pay 500 for a freaking new battery. If the auto stop shit isn’t there it costs 150
Yes, I heared similar thing. Or get a broken ac/dc convert plug or remove the fuse or . That way it senses power and wont kill the motor. @@alexmcmullin6649
Just tried it with a nightlight. 100% works!!! lol!!! If the light is plugged in the Auto start/stop is disabled. Turn the Truck off and the Nightlight tuns off so💯💯. Best mod ever!!
Only way to find out is to try it. I know that many people have commented that this method will cause issues, but I didn't have any! It's so simple that you should try it and see, but please comment so others may learn from your efforts!
That is most likely because a 110v accessory will drain the battery, and Ford wouldn't want you to have auto stop prevent you from completing your journey.
Another thing is it will save your turbo (ecoboost) the turbo can get hot and shutting down a turbo quickly hot will damage it. Also why we should let our engines warm up before driving in the cold. Sudden temperature changes will damage turbos.
An excellent point!! When the engine shuts down, especially after hard acceleration, the turbo may still be spinning and turning off the engine increases the likely hood that the bearing may not get enough oil, which will wear the turbo bearings quicker. Thanks for watching HowToHeaven
Well done amigo.....what about the Horne ? When you go to convenencie store ...is really cold this time in idaho ...you leave the car and door shutts and BEP.BEP...what i been doing doing if i have passenger in my truck im just leave the keys inside ...or no body in my truck im just don't shut my truck all the way.....gracias amigo ...hello from boise idaho
Hey I appreciate your video I also have a 2020 ford ranger always wondered how to get a bypass from the auto stop and start but now I know thank you very much
Hello, it’s Mr. Pete. Your videos are very well done and the editing is excellent. That is how I fixed my Toyota. However there was a price to pay. I get a big warning on the dashboard that I cannot get rid of. And the warning covers A lot of the other information on the dashboard. No good deed goes on punished. Ford had a better idea. I am surprised that this feature does not seem to bother most people. I can tell that it annoys you, as much as it annoys me. Happy new year.
I have heard about how this autostart/stop ruins starters but have Yet to see or heard of anyone having such a problem. As they say,,,show me the bodies. THAT being said this video is great. I hate the auto/off and on function as it is a PITA. So I followed the instructions here in and did the deed. I have to say it took longer to watch the video than it did to apply what I saw. GREAT HELP. With that in mind I looked at my 2020 Explorer. Guess What ? It also has this same little plug on the battery cable. NOW it is disabled on that to. Thanks so much for the Help. Amen
Doesn't unplugging this connector have some effect on the BMS? (battery management system) In your video, you "guessed" unplugging it had no effect on any other system . . .
@@HowToHeaven You completely misunderstand the BMS......and the starter system in these vehicles. Is it annoying, yes, but your advice, while stopping Auto start-stop, causes other issues.
@@wmichaels1 Thanks for the information. Since the fix is only a simple ground wire disconnect, the intrusion into the "BMS," (which in itself sounds like you know what you are talking about...maybe you should enlighten everyone with the definition of "BMS", and while you are at it, the "starter system"...in your own video), is minimal at best, and those effects have been discussed here already (of which the solution would be to reconnect the ground signal), I believe this is a valuable video.
Yes this works BUT, be advised, this also takes out the REMOTE START feature. IF you don't have it all good, but if you DO and you like your REMOTE START more than you hate start-stop this fix may not be for you. Even though I don't use the remote start very often, this was still a deal breaker. Mine 2017 Fusion SE. Other years, other models, try it, then check to see if remote start still works.
but the "start/stop" definitely DID "go away"? all I'm saying is on my 2017 SE the remote start was also gone, no coincidence, because it returned when I plugged back in @@pmaint1
One other question, my neighbor has a '22 Buick Encore GX ... it doesn't have the quick connect, but an extra ground wire with a small bolt on the negative cable ... will that by chance do like your Ranger did?
Easiest way to determine that is to try it. You won't damage anything and you can just plug it in if it doesn't work for you. Many people have commented on other Ford models that this worked for them. Give it a shot, and please write back to others may benefit from your comments! Thanks
That's the battery minder. If you have the touch unlock on your passenger side door lock, it will no longer work, as well as possibly some higher level features.
I saw another channel that was doing something similar on an F150. they did it with a plug under the dash. it did the same as this but also effected the lights on a trailer if you have one connected. so I just wanted to know if you thought that might be a concern on the ranger as well.
I have been running my 2020 Ranger with the autostop disabled since I posted this video with NO side effects! It's only a ground signal to the computer, just unplug yours and try it!
today i learned my 2022 didnt come with auto start/stop, im so glad lol i hated it on my f150 , i was reading because of the chip shortage that they started no putting it on
Neat, though you have just disconnected the battery monitor. The vehicles doesn't know the battery state of charge anymore, so it just keeps running the engine to maintain charge. No issue there, but if the battery is losing charge you won't know and the vehicle can't implement battery saver strategy.
Yes, but it's a choice you have to make. The charging system will maintain the battery charge as in any car, but the computer can't monitor it, which is why the computer disables the auto stop/start function. I have been told in the comments that it may affect towing although it is simply a matter of reconnecting it whey you tow. The way I looked at it, if you have a battery issue, then it will be apparent and easy to diagnose, whether you reconnect the monitor or not the battery saver strategy isn't going to change that it just prolongs a dead battery condition.
A night light plugged into the 110v outlet behind the console does the same thing. And if you know you'll be sitting somewhere for a long time you can easily unplug it. With ignition off this outlet won't drain your battery.
Im going to try this tomorrow in my 22 ford escape hopefully its thr same way looks like it but wr will see.ty so much i was gonna buy one of those obd2 plugs thanks agsin
I'm gonna unplug mine for sure , Also can't seem to take out my back light so I can splice a light to my brake light . mine is a 2019 ranger lariat FX4
It appears that you have the Lariat trim, so you might have remote start capability. If so, if you remote start your truck on a cold morning and the truck is set to Auto climate, do both your seat heater lights come on with the three bars when you press the brake and hit your Start button? Only my left seat warmer light and bars comes on but not for the right seat even though I can feel that the right seat also warmed up during the remote start. I'm trying to find if this is normal. Even when my wife is sitting in the right seat when I hit the start button while the truck is running due to being started remotely, still on the left seat light and bars turn on. Normal?
Unfortunately, I no longer have that 2020 Ranger Lariat, so I won't be able to help, but I am sure that your local Ford Dealer may be able to help, and if they can't...test drive one and test it yourself! Thanks for watching!
Does not work for my 2022 Ford Maverick. I mean it probably functions right but the problem is this: Big Red "Charging System (new line) Service Soon" message appears repeatedly and never goes away. There might be a Forscan method of hiding that error report but the fact is, it seems Ford caught onto this method and decided to annoy the driver/owner. I have an "eco mode" I'd also like to set as default but can't do that either without some janky solution. I don't know how expensive the "bus insertion" method is (I guess I will look) but that would appear to be the only way. What is "bus insertion"? That's what that not-free device is. It interfaces with the engine/car communications network bus. The OBD2 talks on that bus as does everything else. This "thing in the middle" device just adds a pass-thru in-line device that sends the signal that is the same as the start/stop signal from the button for auto-start-stop. I did get the "ASS disabled" (Auto-Start-Stop) symbol though... just the big red warning as well. Not clean... I would expect if you updated your system control firmware, you might get this message as well.
My car is a 2020 explorer. I did disconnect the BMS cable and yes the start/stop function ceased. Reading more about the BMS function I decided it was not wise to leave the cable disconnected. However, after reconnecting the cable I find that the auto start/stop is no longer automatic, I.e., on the screen when I stop, there is an A with a diagonal line through it. And, no engine shut down. What I don’t know is whether the BMS is functioning or not.
I appreciate this so much I was literally about to buy one of those auto start/stop devices that you connect to the obd port for 100ish bucks but now I don’t have to!
I now fell back in love with my 2019 Ford Ranger xlt again as The stupid start stop feature was not mentioned to me when I bought the vehicle. Every time I get back in to my truck and I no longer worry about my starter about my motor destroying itself as whenever it shut off the oil pressure also drops while there may be residual oil on the internal workings of my motor, I no longer have that problem it took me a whopping point five seconds to disconnect and neatly tuck it away where I don’t even have to look at the connector again. Thank you my friend you’ve got a loyal friend for life and subscriber. God bless you my friend, and I wish you all the success in the world in your Futureendeavors
Great video!!! I have a question, disabling this function, would it affect the warranty of the vehicle? I mean, could it be detected when the vehicle is connected to a computer at the dealership? Thanksssss
The only way it could affect the Factory Warranty is if it was shown to be the cause of your Warranty Issue, which is extremely doubtful as the Starter/battery/wiring would last longer if you disabled it! If Ford blamed your warranty issue on disconnecting the negative connection, then they would have to show that the warranty issue was caused by this disconnection! See also Magnussen Moss act!
Thank you I was about to buy an OBD device for two vehicles. This worked on my 2019 Ranger and my 2019 F150. I know it's petty to complain about pushing a button every time but It can get annoying.
There is another guy on utube that has his son disconnect a wire that is on the driver side in the cab on the left side where there is a block with a bunch of leads and I have a 2019 xlt that I did this a few years ago. Not sure if its the same wire that goes to the switch inside the cab. I wish I had the link to where he tells his son to pull the wire and no more start stop. I heard that if you have one of those fancy Lariats or higher model there might be some issue but thy were either taking that module off completely off the battery or just doing what this guy did. But I dont tow so I dont know if that would effect that option on my xlt. But so far eveything works like it should and its been a few years since I pulled that wire out. The block of wires is on the driver side and I wish that I could remember the color anyway its night ti,e and its cold so im not going outside to look sorry. but see if you can google or search on utube for the guy that had his son pull the wire remember its for Ford F150s...
Mine was a Lariat, I didn't notice anything otherwise, I would have put that information in the video. All I know is that I did it on video and it worked, others who comment say some other effects are possible, however I haven't seen any videos. Sometimes I get trolls, I take them with a grain of salt or less!
@@HowToHeaven I checked on my wife's 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee and she had the same wire connected to her battery. I unplugged it and now no more Auto/start stop!

Thanks for this!!! I've had that feature on many a rental car and have hated it. I am taking delivery of a new 2021 Ranger this weekend and knew that I would want this gone, but assumed I'd have to buy one of the OBD2 connectors. Thanks to you, I don't have to! That said, a lot of people are complaining about "government overreach." I'm confused by this as some people want this and it does provide some value (depending on how you drive and where you drive). The "problem" is not the feature, just that Ford did not create a setting to disable it for the situations where there is no (or a negative) value for the owner.
Valid point! I look at it as a cost benefit analysis. I don't think the wear and tear and replacement cost on the starter is worth the gas savings! It is also an inconvenience. Thanks for watching!
Yes, you are correct that some people may want this, however for me, I would gladly trade the fuel savings of this feature for the cost of a new starter and the labor $ to replace that starter!
On my 21 Ranger, I've gotten into the habit of turning it off but sometimes I forget and I'm like "What just happened". I might try this. I saw another video about this. My only concern is, shouldn't that little coupler be taped off or something instead of just leaving it dangling?
Has anyone had any issues with remote start after unplugging this plug? I did it to my wife's 2017 Escape, and now her remote start only works for 30 seconds then turns off. I was told this plug also feeds the remote start system with a voltage reading. I'm going to plug it back in and see if it fixes the issue.
Not sure about the remote start being affected but makes sense . This wire provides the signal for the Battery Management system so un-hooking it does affect other things . It will force the battery to charge at 100% all the time even if it doesn't need to . There's always consequences .
Works great on my 2021 Ranger. Only side effect I’ve seen so far is after being parked for a day I got a notice from the Ford app on my phone that the remote start/stop has been disabled to conserve battery. I assume that the sensor being unplugged has something to do with it.
Yes, I believe that the signal wire from the battery, being disconnected, fools the ECM into NOT activating the Start/Stop feature, because it thinks the battery is Low. It is basically a Ford safety signal so that, in regular use (Start/Stop activated/wire connected), if your battery is LOW, your car doesn't STOP because it will be unable to START.

I would like you to help me with a problem I have with my 2022 ford ranger because when I stop and release the brake it feels like it hits when the gear is engaged I don't know if it's right or not because it's a new truck
That's right it is a battery sensor. I followed your steps and about three days later had several warnings come up on my Ford App. I then had to book it in with a dealer. In short your hack works but it stuffs up the App.
Thanks, brother it was getting annoying after 25 miles I couldn't imagine doing it for the life of my truck. It stopped the auto-stop but now there's the battery icon lit and have to acknowledge the power problem before starting.
I want to do this but I am wondering if disconnecting that wire also sends a low battery signal to the charging system causing the battery to overcharge and fail.
No possibility of a short, your entire car is Grounded to the negative side of the battery (the same negative that the plug is connected to), you will be fine leaving the connector alone, but if it gives you peace of mind put plastic bags around the wires.
Thank you! its fine if Ford wanted to install this but they should have the option to either always have it on or always off... I hate that I have to turn it off every time I start my truck.... thanks!!!
Calling that dumb auto start/stop forced on Ford owners a "feature" is like making a flat tire a factory option. Thank YOU for this easy trick to end the constant headache of having to push that danged annoying button every time I start up my truck. Sub'd your channel.
This also works on F-150s but you will get a charge warning message every time you start it. No big deal unless your battery is really draining. On a newer vehicle you should be fine. Bottom line is this trick works.
I was just wondering if disconnecting that plug affects any thing else & after plugging it back in if a Ford diagnostic computer can tell That the engine has been running with it unplugged ? Btw I like your videos, I haven’t put the letters on my tailgate but as soon as it warms up I will. Your video really showed the best way to apply them.
No, unplugging the connection does NOT affect any other systems, in fact, once you unplug the Light on the Instrument panel activates the Auto Start/Stop light just the same as if you pushed the little manual override on the console next to the switch. Ford service cannot tell that the plug was undone, as long as you plug it back in! This is as FREE a MOD as you can GET!!!!
@@HowToHeaven thanks for answering my questions . It’s my first new vehicle in a long time & I was a little apprehensive about doing anything to it. I have installed everything except the letters following your installation videos. Keep making videos & I’ll keep watching. Thanks again.
Thanks, NO, disconnecting the ground plug has no affect on any other system. Just remember to plug it in before taking your vehicle to the dealer. Thanks for the compliment! Also, a viewer commented that using water with a drop or two of soap will allow you to place the letters and reposition them a little. I have used this technique on larger stickers, but not on these letters. It may be helpful, I just figured they were small and might shift after being placed on the tailgate. Hi i did this on my 2022 edge and it puts a code in the BCM ,the dealer found it because I complained that the charging message comes on when you start the engine and to cancel it I have to press the ok button on the left steering wheel switch, that would be ok but under warranty they will find codes and could charge you. food for though
I have ford edge 2019. The auto start/ stop is absolutely ridiculous if you ask me. However I'm a little bit hesitant as to unplug that connecter next to the negative side. Since it may effect electronic related components in the car. Correct me if I'm wrong? I'm willing to subscribe to your channel.
The negative wire won't affect anything else or set off any Check Engine Lights. If you have any doubts, try it out as many others have on many other ford models, as noted in this comment section. You can always plug it back in and re activate the Start Stop System.
@@HowToHeavenMy system went off on it's own. I did not have to pull the plug. The battery had to be recharged three times for some reason. The computer doesn't trust the battery anymore. I will not reactivate it. Works fine.
Pretty sure that symbol is default "on". Press that button again and it will go off like mine did. I haven't driven it yet, but disconnecting that connector tonight didn't change the way the symbol or button behaved. Before I discond the symbol was "on" until the button was pushed, remained the same even after disconnecting. We'll see....
I discovered another simple fix for this. The regular defroster button, (not high) this + fan set to 1 or 2 (silent) also switches the AC on-LOW. On my 2017 SE, this blocks the auto-stop/start. AND unlike the console button for the stop/start, this fix stays on when you restart the car. And to my knowledge, this is also the only way turn the A/C on "low". and for the record, I still get over 27mpg (city) with this left on. Another reason I know this is doing what I think it is, if I'm stopped at a light, and I want to switch on "recycle", (you have to turn off the defroster first). The INSTANT I turn off the defroster, the engine stops. lift foot off break engine starts. Or, tap the defroster button, engine starts.

It basically works like >> Push button, the button talks to the network "Hi I'm the ASS button (auto-start-stop) on the Ford Maverick [device ID 12345] and I just disengaged my ASS."
This is what the device "remembers." It remembers that it sends a "disengage" or "engage" message to the car communication network bus.

That has been bugging me for the last 14 months, Ill disconnect ASAP! You’re a life saver!! Thank you..
Thank you very much, I tried it on my 2020 Ford Ranger T8. It works very well. What a relief to no longer press the button when getting into the car.
You're welcome!
Be carful this also turns off a lot of other stuff and puts a strain on the battery. Not worth it.
Thanks for saving me the pain of trying to remember to push the disable button every time I start my Ranger, your the Ranger King.
Will this work on a 2024 Ford Maverick 2.0 ecoboost?
Only way to find out is to try it. I know that many people have commented that this method will cause issues, but I didn't have any! It's so simple that you should try it and see, but please comment so others may learn from your efforts!
I noticed if you have something plugged into the rear 110v outlet it’s automatically disabled 👍🏼👍🏼

Hey I appreciate your video I also have a 2020 ford ranger always wondered how to get a bypass from the auto stop and start but now I know thank you very much
That was awesome advice just did it. Have you noticed any problems since doing it?
I didn't when I owned the Ranger, but read all the comments for some great tips.
It's Great to hear from you! You really do care about your viewers! Thanks for the comment!
Most gearheads are annoyed by the feature.... most non car people and tree huggers put up with it 🙄🤦🏼♂️
Thank you! Only 1500 miles on my Ranger and I was so annoyed about this start stop thing !
Thank you for this video.
Amen
Your welcome and thanks for letting us know that it worked on your 2020 Explorer too!
Doesn't unplugging this connector have some effect on the BMS? (battery management system) In your video, you "guessed" unplugging it had no effect on any other system . . .
Yes, it will maximize your battery charge as you will NOT be draining your battery by constantly restarting your vehicle at every light!
This certainly works but my 2024 shows a 12 Volt Charge System Fault on my dash lights up. Goes away when plugged back in.
Works! Just did my 2019 Ranger.
Only the remote start on the APP, not on your Key FOB!
@mixxmastr My remote starter still works after unplugging it.
but the "start/stop" definitely DID "go away"? all I'm saying is on my 2017 SE the remote start was also gone, no coincidence, because it returned when I plugged back in @@pmaint1
One other question, my neighbor has a '22 Buick Encore GX ... it doesn't have the quick connect, but an extra ground wire with a small bolt on the negative cable ... will that by chance do like your Ranger did?
TY ! TY! TY! I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW EASEY THIS WAS FOR SUCH AN ANNOYING THING. I'VE HAD MY 2019 RANGER SINCE 9/2019 AND JUST FOUND THIS OUT.

OK ... will this simple unplug work on the Maverick w/the eco-boost engine? Saw the same type of plug on it's battery? If so that's great ! Thanks.

Hi Will this mess up my battery charging system please let me know thanks
Man I Appreciate this ! Thanks for Sharing!
Thanks!!! Do u have info on retrieving the door code on a truck with a key ignition?
Sorry, I didn't have that accessory. Some of those keypads that mount on the door actually use a battery!

How long has this been disconnected from your truck and does it hurt anything
Sold the truck, but had it disconnected for months, with no issues or warning lights.
There's a feature in the cluster menu to disable that...but it's like the button, it doesn't keep it disabled when you shut off and restart the truck.
I disabled stop/start from menu and it does keep it disabled even after starting and stopping. Just my experience.
You just made my driving world a better and more comfortable place😁 thank you👌
Thanks for watching, happy to help, I know it drove me crazy (pun intended)!
Does not work for my 2022 Ford Maverick. I mean it probably functions right but the problem is this:
Big Red "Charging System (new line) Service Soon" message appears repeatedly and never goes away.

Great video!!!
I have a question, disabling this function, would it affect the warranty of the vehicle? I mean, could it be detected when the vehicle is connected to a computer at the dealership? Thanksssss
Just reconnect it prior to service.
FYI, it is logged into the vehicle, and yes it does show for the service techs that is has been unplugged for the previous time frame.

Is this a bad thing?
I have a 2018 Edge 2.0 .If I disconnect it will it work for this car? Thank you
Try it, if it acts differently, just reconnect it, you WON'T break anything by trying!
On my 21 Ranger, I've gotten into the habit of turning it off but sometimes I forget and I'm like "What just happened". I might try this. I saw another video about this. My only concern is, shouldn't that little coupler be taped off or something instead of just leaving it dangling?
Since the entire car serves as a ground, leaving the connector as is shouldn't have any affect.
Yes it does and isn't conserving the battery one of the benefits of this mod, besides reducing wear and tear on you starting system?
I just unplugged this and my Ford Pass app will start my Ranger no issue. I got no errors so far. I love this fix.

Should I be worried about water getting into the connector (since it’s disconnected) and possibly causing a short?
No possibility of a short, your entire car is Grounded to the negative side of the battery (the same negative that the plug is connected to), you will be fine leaving the connector alone, but if it gives you peace of mind put plastic bags around the wires.

That the engine has been running with it unplugged ? Btw I like your videos, I haven’t put the letters on my tailgate but as soon as it warms up I will. Your video really showed the best way to apply them.
No, unplugging the connection does NOT affect any other systems, in fact, once you unplug the Light on the Instrument panel activates the Auto Start/Stop light just the same as if you pushed the little manual override on the console next to the switch.

I'm sure that procedure may help someone! Thanks for watching!
