The 2019 Ford Ranger is the revival of the Ford Ranger name. The Ford Ranger is back in the United States, and today I'm reviewing the 2019 Ford Ranger to show you if the new Ranger is good enough to square off against close pickup truck rivals.

Trucks are so big nowadays, these "compact" trucks are the same size as full size trucks 10-15 years ago
I made the mistake of saying that one time. I personally think this statement is true, the douchebag I told it to though had to bitterly argue with me for two days like I had insulted his mother's honor and actually went and compared wheelbase sizes. As I recollect he was right, and no, I don't talk to this guy anymore unless I absolutely have to.
It’s because trucks aren’t actually about utility anymore. The majority of them are used as luxury vehicles, not as a work vehicles. A lot of the people I know who work in traditionally “truck friendly” jobs like handymen or construction workers use old Japanese trucks or compact SUVs. New American trucks are gigantic and usually saddled with BS luxury features, making them too expensive for the demographic that actually uses trucks for their intended purposes.

@NPC 1z-y64n1 Where'd you get the extra wheel?

“Performance is fantastic.”
“This feels like the fastest midsized truck on the market; it’s really, really impressive.”
“The powertrain is fantastic.”
“If acceleration matters to you [...], this is compelling”
“Shockingly quick”
Acceleration: 2/10
It has great performance for a truck.
The truck feels very fast.
Unfortunately, acceleration in the Dougscore is measured globally, so of course a Compact truck can't compete with the Audi RS3, for example.
When you consider a 918 Spyder is a 10, a compact pickup getting a 2 actually is impressive. It's all relative. Anything slower than 4 sec 0-60 gets a 5 or lower from Doug.
That's why some of his reviews are BS. Makes no sense at all.
Exactly, the Doug Score with acceleration is useless. You have to score based on competitors, not against a $2MM Bugatti.
Dougscore acceleration scoring is done the right way. It is vehicles vs vehicles. It makes no sense that a car with 8 point acceleration would be slower than a car with 4 point accelereration. 0-60 mph times are only thing that matters in acceleration.

In South America we have a Ranger Raptor, but not the F-150 Raptor.
In the US we had the ranger raptor last year but don't anymore.
They only sell the Ford Ranger Raptor to areas where the Ford F-150 Raptor isn't available and vice versa. Here in the Philippines, it would take you alot of paper works and government-dealer agreements to have an F-150 Raptor shipped and delivered to you whereas the Ranger Raptor is readily available at any given time
Its crazy Ford didnt think the US was good enough for it all these years, they only did it because of Chevrolet. If you look the ranger up its the same truck from 4 years ago in Europe and South America
kingg one they didn’t want to abuse product mix maybe. Even though the sport pickup segment is so hot right now. Even here in the philippines, the ranger raptor nearly outsells their wildtrak partner.
@@vicjr.1813 you are the guinea pig for the Raptor , they would not just launch this in the us without testing . Or maybe not, some major tabloids love Ford besides their issues . But in another country they can test this without reputation issues reflecting on you paying the price and americans not knowing of the issues you had and will still sell them with original problems in the us .

These are everywhere in Australia, always in the top selling vehicles. The only time you see them though is when they're 2 inches from your rear bumper trying to intimidate you because you're driving too slow at 5 over the speed limit
Do they call them trucks or utes, though?
@Rick C It's a ute. Truck starts at tow truck or box truck and goes all the way up to B-Doubles. After that it's a road train. That's my understanding of larger vehicles but if someone knows better then feel free to correct me.
And ours dont have that weird front bumper and the visible exhaust
Rick C uterus.
Do you need a truck license? Do you sit over the engine? If neither it's not a truck.
I'm guessing that blind spot monitor is printed on the tail lights so you don't cover it with a brush guard.
That and so you know where it is if you ever have to replace it, as it's probably built into the taillight and the parts bloke at the Ford dealer will certainly ask whether or not it's equipped with one.
The sensor/module is right where the print is. I would also guess the print is to explain why there is no "light" in that area of the lens. Same with the F150's, it is dark where the sensor is.
Also so people don't smoke the tail lights
its nice to know where it is when there is ice and snow on your vehicle. it bitches a lot at you about not working when its covered up on Toyotas

I own a 1995 Ford Ranger. I have owned it since 1998. It has the old 2.3 liter 4 cylinder engine with the 5 speed manual transmission, and 2 wheel drive. I still get about 27 miles per gallon around town or in the mountains, and 35 miles per gallon on highways. I keep up with regular maintenance, and have replaced some things like the brake lines and the radiator that have gone bad just because of age. It is completely reliable and serves me well. I really like it. I have looked at the new Ranger. It is much bigger now, and way more complicated electronics wise. It has a 10 speed automatic transmission, forsooth. an over complicated piece of crap just waiting to give you major problems. The same goes for the turbo charged engine, which they are pushing to the limit, and won't be nearly as reliable as the old version. I won't buy a new one. It is WAY too expensive, too much complicated crap to break, and they don't have the manual transmission any more. Where I live in the mountains of Tennessee, I won't own a vehicle without a manual transmission, which helps augment the braking going downhill.
Why can't they make small affordable trucks like they did back then? My 94 Ford ranger splash is still kicking and is all I need. Tired of the massive trucks that cost $50k.
Trucks costing $50k? Well, get ready for year of our Corporation. Cause trucks are going to hit the $75k+ or more price margins. Btw, in this same year...Ford is coming out with an all new Ford Courier that will be a small compact unibody truck.
Because inflation. Also technology. 94 cost plus inflation and quality. $100 in 1994 is equivalent to $170 today.
My 17 Colorado has none of the technology of most new vehicles and it was nearly 40 grand.... so I'm not buying all the tech mumbo jumbo price increases.

Right?I fell in love with the old ranger because of its size. A humble Ford, man. We need more of those.
These are actually the size of what used to be the Ford F100 before Ford discontinued them and increased the size of everything to gigantic proportions. They need to go back to the smaller Ford Ranger. Not everyone needs something big enough to haul an army tank.

Agreed. These reviews are much more relatable and realistic for consumers as well. No need to drift every car around some track telling us how great it handles when that will never be how the car is used

This new Ranger isnt a compact, and the mileage is horrible. Was so excited when I heard there was a new one coming out and I can retire my 2005 and get a new truck that would replace it, not going to happen with this thing. THE #1 PROBLEM with this truck is the price. It starts too high and after just going to XLT and 4x4, you're already in F150 territory.
BASE F150 territory. In my area where these are in limited supply, a Lariat is about the same price as a 300a XLT F150. That's quite a lot of equipment for the price if you don't need a full size truck. The base just isn't really cheap which is a bit surprising.
complain, but why don't you price out other trucks? ranger starts at $24,000, tacoma starts at $25,700 and Colorado starts at 22000.. yet a fully loaded all bells and whistles ranger is $45k, Tacoma loaded... $45k... and colorado loaded is also $45k. So say what you want about price, but you're going to pay the same no matter which one you buy. as for "f150 territory" again, go shopping... fully loaded f150 lariet is going to cost you around $65k and up... if you get just the xlt f150 4x4, you are at 50k... ranger xlt 4x4... 35k... do a little research... thats the msrp pricing... look it up.
@@iPlayDrums4You the difference is, rebates. Huge rebates on the F150 but not the ranger. I bought my 2017 F150 4x4 with the 302a package, nav, and a ton of extras for 34k. MSRP of 49k. You won't find a ranger with 15k off.

It's amazing the difference in sizes. In England with our small roads and short distances, the little ranger is pretty much the only pickup that counts. It's perfect for us. About 90% of pickups here are rangers
I think your acceleration score should be slightly weighted for the type of vehicle it is. I’ve always thought that.

My friend had a 1994 regular cab with the 4.0. and a 5-speed. Rangers were actually small trucks back then and by 1994 non sports car standards that thing was freaking quick.
Needs the eco boost v6 from the Taurus and the explorer as an option
This is not a Ranger. It's too big to be a Ranger. You can barely reach over the side of the bed, much less reach across the bed to get that thing that slid to the other side. As an American, that likes pickups, What is the deal with American pickups getting larger and larger?! This "ranger" is almost as big as an F150 ten years ago. I'll stick with my 20 year old beater Ranger, at least it is sized appropriately for a *small* truck. (You are not suppose to need a step ladder to get into the bed of a small pickup.)
Us Americans have a size obsession. Food portions, beds, weight lifting. If it isn't big, then it's not American enough apparently. The reason why the general population will will stay unhealthy for years to come . That's also what she said.
Oh I totally agree. I want Toyota to bring back a true small pickup truck too. I’d scoop one up in a minute!
Well, I just compared overall lengths between the new and old one:
2011: 203.6"
2019: 210.8" (also applies for the Crewcab)
You won't likely notice that difference whenever you go or park your truck.
@@luisinhoens90 You act like length is the only factor...
Width, weight, height, and cabin to bed ratio are far more important
@@luisinhoens90 Overall length is not a very good indicator for truck size. Perfect example is that my 1997 Ranger has an overall length of 198.2". Much smaller truck right? Well not where it matters. I have a 7' bed, which is not even offered on the new truck. The 2019 tops out at 6'. The max bed size for the crew cab is 5'. So right there mine is more useful as an actual truck.
"The drivetrain is fantastic!" Acceleration 2/10.
@C Pr oh I'm not talking shit. I just thought it was just funny.
Most trucks are a 1. To have a pickup be anywhere on the range of acceleration compared to sports cars is very impressive.
there is more to a drive train the speed, reliability and gas milage also matter. stop being small minded. although speed is fuckin fun as shit tho

too much fuss over dougscore. who cares, dougscore is only doug's opinion.
No objectivity, no systematic analysis, just some young guy's opinion... Geez just calm down...
Doug DeMuro: The Ranger has the best acceleration in its market segment.
Also, Doug Demuro: The acceleration gets a two out of ten.
Simple, the DougScore doesn't take market segments into account. It ranks all vehicles against all others, so the Ranger is being compared to Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Bugattis, etc. The acceleration score is determined by an objective scale based on 0-60 times, where anything that takes longer than 7 seconds gets a "1".
That's incredible on the horsepower. I owned a 1994 Ford Ranger with the 4.0L V6 and it only had 160HP - and it had some serious get-up-and-go.
Because of the torque, which was 225 ft/lbs. The 4.0 was the largest engine you could buy in a ranger. I imagine in a standard cab truck it was very peppy, especially in 1994 when most full size trucks had that kind of power.

It was designed and developed in Australia, one of the best selling truck from a long time here with a ranger raptor available here
Doug, if you're surprised about leaving the truck running for 15 minutes with the remote starter, you've obviously never lived somewhere cold.
Do you remember when Doug lived in Pennsylvania? Pepperidge Farm remembers
@@nickdohle Pennsylvania doesn't get that cold. Never below 0F unless in the mountains. It doesn't really go below 20. I live in Maryland so I get pretty much the same weather.
NatoriousGamePlay even ct gets to the single digits
Yah when it get to literally -30F in the Canadian Prairies, leaving a vehicle running for 15, even 20 mins, is actually very normal. Only people who have lived in a cold climate would know.
It gets below 45° & I start my car 15 minutes in advance.
Ford completely missed the point of the Ranger with this truck .
Dr. Westside this sells really well in Australia so maybe the American market just isn’t suited to a pickup/ute of this size
This size? The truck is almost as big as a full size. People have been wanting a compact truck for years since this was discontinued and the Colorado switched to the global platform. This truck isn't even in the neighborhood of a compact.
Koko Costanza I want tricks the size of the S10 and the original ranger, not this crap
You definitely aren't the only one...this looks like it's about the same size as a half ton from 10 years ago
I loved the old style ranger. Hell I had one. This truck here is too big and it's a 4 cylinder.

Sadly, the closest thing this vehicle comes to the older Ranger is simply the name.
@Spencer7445 _ this truck is the extended cab lol.
Yeah, it seems to be vastly better in every way...
Do you realize how much s#@t Ford would get these days if they still made something more like the old ranger?
There's a ranger raptor available in South Africa and New Zealand though
Ismaeel Dealmeida also Australia
Also asia
Ranger raptor is shit here in New Zealand it costs $90000 waste of money
Rumor is Ford doesn’t want the Ranger Raptor to steal sales from the F150 raptor.
@@chaoticsilentium yea that is why there won't be a ranger raptor in the US, an off-road ranger would be great but dont call it the raptor. in Australia they also have the wildtrak version.
It's so big compared to the previous generations...
We can thank (or not) safety regulations for it's size. The older Ford Rangers fondly adopted the nick name "Danger Ranger" because of their piss poor crash safety ratings. It was a cute little death box. All the same I do still love those old rangers & see a lot of them on the road today. But Ford had to give the ranger more rigidity & ability to absorb more collision inertia in order to meet today's market regulations. Not to mention the door dinger that everyone must love so much because it is standard in every ford since like 2014.
@@SugaryPhoenixxxIf safety has to do with size then how are they able to make and sell small Fords in the USA like the Fiesta, Focus, C-Max and EcoSport?
Also in foreign markets dont have our full-size pickups. So a big midsize is needed

Joseph Brogna why don’t foreign markets have full size pickups

I was just in the Philippines and theses are all over AND they come in a Raptor Edition too. They have a 3.2L V6 or a Diesel.
Actually the 3.2 engine was an inline 5 cylinder.
It blows my mind that they’re trying to to make these trucks more and more fuel efficient but they’re getting bigger and bigger
Agreed, but bigger doesn't necessarily mean the trucks weigh more than the older ones. That's where the market is going, since people are buying more trucks/suvs than cars for some reason. That high seating position really turns customers on.
An acquaintance of mine who was an engineer at Ford said that Americans have gotten so fat that they have to make vehicles larger to make them comfortable.
@@georgeklimes7604 I'm sure they are getting larger vehicles to compensate for other shortcomings that they have.
Bigger trucks with better mpgs sounds awesome to me!

I don't know if you are seeing this ? But, I improved the ride on my 2004 F-150 Lariat by installing an air-bag under the driver seat... A "Feature" which apparently Ford has no desire to pursue......No body cares...... if this is the best ford can do with a "small" truck, toyota has nothing to worry about when it comes to tacoma sales.
Caleblanc145 it looks about the same size as the new tacomas
I like the Tacoma better, I never bought a truck for fuel economy...LOL It's why we own a sedan also.

Mike Normandy ford still did it first... they were doing it on full size trucks in the 80s and probably before that too.

Way bigger looking than the Aussie ones.
Yeah, new mid size trucks are getting pretty big. They're as big as older full size trucks
@Matthew Moore it's because of all the safety regulations now. Look at the old 4 runners compared to the new ones. The old ones were nice sized perfect for offroad. The new ones are huge soccer mom cruisers.
I drive a 2008 Ranger for work 300-400 miles each week. I drove the new Ranger at the FW auto show, and it didn't feel a 10000x bigger. It is more truck, but felt nimble and easy to maneuver, in contrast with today's full size trucks. A friend of mine bought a 2018 Silverado crew cab a few months ago. He stopped by the other day driving a new Tahoe. He said he couldn't park the Silverado in one stab, and traded it in. That said, I'm still torn between the midsize and full sized trucks. I did own an 2003 ZR2, I loved it, but the 4.3 was slow and thirsty, 16 MPG Hwy, 12-13 in town. It would have been a great truck with a 5.3, faster and better MPG.
FINALLY! Someone tells right away that this isn't a "new" truck
This is what a truck should be. Solid power plant, and the rest of it is whatever. 90% of pickups these days never actually get used for truck things.
I disagree. I think what you notice is that the trucks are grossly UNDERUSED for "truck things." But anyone who owns a truck uses their truck capabilities. For example, you buy a fridge or a dishwasher, it goes in the bed. Yard waste goes in the bed. The truck goes easily into partially unplowed parking spots. I don't think you'd have an easy time finding a person with a truck who has owned it for a full 5 years, the average duration of a loan, who would say they've driven it strictly as a commuter vehicle or Sunday driver and never used any truck features.
I bought a new Ranger STX in 1987. Traded it in 2010. Loved it, but rust was killling it. This thing is Ranger in name only, but it is really nice.
God I hate that you cannot buy a new mini truck. They are all oversized and over priced now...
There's rumors and spy shots of Ford coming out with a mini truck based on the Focus chassis.
Nissan frontiers arent too big
Check out the fiat toro we have in latin america, that's a proper small truck!
pinfarmer I bought a Nissan Frontier. Get the Desert Runner. $24750, 2WD. I love mine. V6, crew cab, off road tires and suspension. Never need 4WD since it’s a weekend warrior truck and daily driver. 46k miles, no issues.
It would never pass emissions regulations. Thats why they had to discontinue the ranger in the first place. Emissions based on vehicle size and weight. The 2011 ranger would have had to get around 30mpg in 2012 to continue production in the US and EU. It got 15.
