    I had the opposite experience. Too Fish beat out the Seaside in both initial speed and snaps in smaller 1-3ft surf, regardless of choppy beach break conditions. Super fun board, but I wouldn't say it's ideal for beginners. Paddle experience on the 5'6 Too Fish is about the same as my Shane Stoneman board at 5’10 12.75 x 19.75 x 15x 2 5/8 which was previously my fastest paddler. The Too Fish just definitely makes the small stuff way more fun. Every board style has it's place and purpose and I think the Too Fish is that sweetspot board for someone who already knows how to surf and is looking to just have more fun on the small mush days without going to a mid-length or longboard.

      Thanks for sharing!! The Seaside is more user friendly vs the Too Fish IMO. I agree on paddling speed. If you could share your weight/height/skill level/city where you surf that would help someone to make the right decision. It's a fun board but not for everyone!

    I wonder how much the conditions change our perception of a new surfboard. However, I've found that a good board is never "an acquired taste." My favorites over the years always seem to work great that first session, no matter the conditions.

    Thanks for posting your reviews, they have been a great help. I have purchased the seaside and beyond and the solo shot 3 plus with your advice and I’m happy with both. I would be interested to know how the Machado Too Fish Keel Fins go in the seaside and the seaside and beyond. I have seen a twin fin review in the seaside and heard twins also go well in the seaside and beyond giving your more pivot. With the more upright twin template of the Machado twin fins, compared to the quads, I think they would work well in both seaside models and would be interested in your thoughts. I’m considering the seaside for a future purchase.

    Why not wait for better conditions? Not many boards would do well in those conditions. Also...id like someone to compare the old model to this one. I dont think most average surfers could tell a difference in the same session. Next year they will have a seaside 2 with minor changes! 😂

      I wasn't able to meet up with Anwar earlier when the waves were much cleaner. Btw, he is the owner of the Too Fish. So I paddled out in bad conditions. However it was still surfable. I think it was a good test to see how Too Fish would perform in below average surf! I'm pretty sure it's going to be fun to ride it when the waves are great and between 3-5 ft+ I just can't wait to try it!
      Next year there might be a Too Fish & Beyond as well! Stay tuned!

    This board looks rad, I think it’s hard to compare your go fish at 6’1 to a 5’4 at 30 L though, same with the seaside. It’s a twin, it should have a little more volume, you’d probably like a 5’6 or 5’7 a lot more!

    • @SkipperSurfReview
      @SkipperSurfReview  Год назад +2

      Thanks for watching. I personally wouldn't go any bigger.. may be 5'5" for the winter when I use more rubber 5 mm wetsuit, 7 mm boots & gloves! Firewire has added more foam up front. There is a trade off. It's great for paddling on the other hand. If roughly compare 5'4" Go Fish ~28L vs 5'4" Too Fish 30L. So, don't oversize it unless you are a heavy front foot surfer!

    • @tokyomassa22
      @tokyomassa22 Год назад +3

      I’d say a 5’5 anything is going to be slower than a 6’1 anything. That’s probably where the difference in speed is from?

      I appreciate your comment, I want a Too Fish and wanna make sure I get the right size. Rob Machado himself commented on an IG post saying to size up 1 or 2 Liters for this board from you usual shortboard volume. • @mikeuptegrove

    I just bought the Too Fish, and agree. Seaside better. I thought I was getting the Too Fish for small crappy surf but it works horribly in crappy choppy small surf. It loses speed through the deep single in any wash you take off in. It tracks left and right when you’re trying to take off and is unpredictable even. I had the board sliding sideways taking off late almost as if I had no fins on it at all. The sweet spot is small. Because of the deep single I don’t feel it catches wave nice at all if there’s any chop at all, and even if it’s clean, if you don’t fully fully fully set your rail before you pop up, the board can have a mind of its own, unlike the Seaside which is very reliable and user friendly. I’m a bit disappointed because I didn’t buy it for good days. I can just grab my Seaside and not have to guess if it’s gonna do what I want when I want irrespective of changing conditions. So I think you nailed the review quite nicely. Thanks.

      @@SkipperSurfReview thanks, I took it out again today when the wonk and chop were gone, and it’s much much better. Almost felt as predictable as Seaside, but not under the lip on late takeoffs. Those still don’t work. But on a clean entry, No chop, no bump, no wonk, it was easier to set a rail before popping up when the chop was gone. But you definitely can’t pop up as fast as on a seaside and hope the board will go where you want it too like it does on the Seaside reliably, even late under the lip. It requires a more clean, almost roll in entry and that rail needs to be set well before you pop up. I almost have to keep a hand on the rail and make sure my front foot is fully set too before I let the hand off the rail, just to make sure the rail stays set for that split second between when my hand leaves the rail and foot replaces it. If that makes sense. The Seaside will take the line you put it on and hold it no hands, whereas the Too Fish will track randomly unless you hold it on that rail line and keep it there until that foot is solidly in control. Even a split second mistake on the Too Fish is enough to ruin a takeoff. You almost need to be more smooth and more flexible, and you can’t rely on faith and the board’s predictability like the Seaside. But the wraps and bottom turns set up virtually the same as on the Seadide. Maybe it’s easier to get release and blow the tail, if you want to. The sweet spot is definitely smaller though.

  • @thestow35
    @thestow35 Год назад +10

    The Too Fish outline, rocker and foil looks a lot like the Christenson Fish. A board that doesn’t grovel and is better suited for good waves. It would be interesting to hear what others think.
    Unless you are on an uber-groveller or log, those waves you surfed aren’t good for reviewing any board meaningfully.
    I think it would be better holding off on any judgements about the board’s performance until you have some average or better waves to surf

    • @SkipperSurfReview
      @SkipperSurfReview  Год назад +3

      This review was in small crappy waves which is somewhat what we usually get out here! Most boards will work great in good waves and sometimes you can barely see any difference unless the board is clearly going slow down the line. It would likely go much better and if I went with 5'6". However I do think that it will get pretty corky at that size! If I get an opportunity to borrow Too Fish again in better waves, I will post another review but I'm not planning on buying it new. The resale value is ridiculous these days.Cheers!

      Thanks for watching! Good question! I would say that Love machine Will’s fish in Varial foam would have more control and hold on bigger days. It won’t be as skatey as Too Fish. Too Fish would be more responsive and have more buoyancy. It won’t be enjoyable when the conditions are not clean. It depends on what conditions you’re aiming to surf. Overall the too fish is more towards intermediate surfers vs Will’s fish that would be more stable and suit better advanced beginners and above. Hope this helps.

      Hey buddy! Thanks for watching! They looks almost similar in terms of the design but FW is EPS and Chris Fish is PU. I have a Seaside, 5'10 39 Litres, when you talk about the waves being too big for that board at 8ft + , can you tell me why that is and what the ideal board is on those sort of waves? Cheers :)

    • @SkipperSurfReview
      @SkipperSurfReview  Месяц назад

      You get a lot of buoyancy in FireWire boards. When you’re on bigger wave you get more speed and the board gets more responsive to any bump/chop which make throw away your balance and control. So on bigger days I don’t prefer riding eps boards especially when it’s windy/choppy. The ideal board for bigger days would be either some step up shortboard or midlength. For instance 6’1” CI Twin Pin. It’s got a good amount of rocker and hold on bigger days. It’s a twin fin but when you turn, it feels like a thruster. That board is great for 3+ ft days. Midlength: 6’6” Daniel Jones Twin Pin. It’s an amazing all around board. Hand shaped. That’s one of my favorite midlengths.
      Hope this helps!

    • @SkipperSurfReview
      @SkipperSurfReview  Год назад +1

      This is one of the most responsive ones! It's very quick to move around but it's lack of glide when you hit flat spots in small surf! Of course, if you get it in bigger size, it will likely go a bit better but the trade off will be less performance and more buoyancy! I would prefer to get Lovemachine Will's Fish in Varial or Album Plasmic (EPS foam) instead of Firewire Too Fish if they would come in the same dimensions. Again, some people would find Too Fish as a really fun board. Hope this helps! Cheers!

    Going slow is not a good sign. Question: is the thickness too far back? Generally speaking from exp too much thickness would prob not slow it down. What would slow it down might be excessive nose rocker, and maybe even too much tail rocker. Or, even thickness too far back i noticed makes a board a bit slower IMHO. Now that too fish i would say try in a solid 3- 4'+ and see what happens.

    • @SkipperSurfReview

      I think the problem is that the Too Fish has a very small sweet spot up front. It can change the way it's supposed to work. If I get a chance, I will definitely try in better waves. But as a groveler, it's not working for me. Cheers!

      I watched the video again and those wave's are not lined up w nice peaks... I would say take it out in sum better wave's. Cos i noticed it looked like the wave's had low push.
      I saw Rob's personal vid and him and his buddy were getting some decent wave's in the 2-3' range and they got it to squirt a bit of water. Dunno, but i would say try it in 3'+ if you can? I'm spoiled i live close to spots that regularly get over 3-4'.
      I guess the too fish is running a concave bottom which I've heard is better surfing in some juice. So what I'm thinking is, try it in better surf. Try taking off more at the peak, or closer to it. That should get you tons of speed right out the gate. Just curious what will happen.😸
      I plan on shaping another fish, but i gotta mini simmons, and an egg in the 8' size on the burner. Gotta whack out the egg, and i cut out the 6' mini simmons already.😸🤙

The other a freeline 5'4 w sum vee, flat 2 vee the thing was a rocket ship! I never threw a rooster in bottom turns n cutbacks as big yet! It had moderate vee prob in last third?
