    I have been riding a twin for a couple of years now and love the speed! Previous board was/ is a 5 fin Bonze. My personnel favorite riders are Torren M, Mikey F and Josh K., all 3 have such style and grace.

  • @lukkeras
    @lukkeras 3 года назад +26

    I think the reason most people complain about twin fins sliding out and not being good for high performance maneuvers is because the change on the feel and the way of riding vs a thruster is so different. You don’t learn instantly when switching from one setup to the other, you have to invest time and relearn how to surf on that new setup. If you give it the time your begin to rediscover new ways of applying force and release that goes along with your new equipment. When I got my custom twin I almost regret it instantly. It wasn’t until the 2nd month of having that board that I begun to really enjoy it. I now love and do not ride anything but twinnies

      Bro I really need to ask you an advice because I just switch to twin fin… when I take off I don’t have speed as usually have with thruster set up… is it normal?? Do u have an advice?? Thank you 🙏

      @hqd5844 8 месяцев назад

      I was just reflecting earlier today about that. I just made the switch from a thruster to a keel twin, and ya like you said you definitely need to relearn how to surf almost. To movements are so much different I feel, and when ur riding a twin fin you definitely have to use your whole body vs the thruster doing most of the work, and kinda of helping you when u make mistakes. That’s just how I felt from riding it a few times.

  • @drewfinn2

    I think of it as setting the rail in the bottom turn on a twin fin. A little more in an extra pause at the bottom than you would on a thruster, and more smooth and gentle shifting of weight to back foot either front side or back side. it’ll also get you to blast up through the lip. as there’s no better feeling than an off the lip where you get pushed back out onto the flats (for me at least). The speed through carves and coming around from a round house cut back to go up and hit the foam bounce are also nice and faster feeling on a twin fin, but off the lips are the most fun in my experience. sort of a fine line between losing control and having the board right where you want it, it also looks the best style wise bc you’re pushing the envelope...

    I just began surfing on a twin fins, yesterday was my second day on it. I dont know how to explain it, but it just feels pretty good :) I feel a more spontaneus and close relation to the board, like, me and it, we are riding the wave together, as in a normal three fin setup sometimes I felt I was like a passenger on the board, I didnt catch so naturally how it responded to what I was doing. The speed and the skatier feel is also very nice and fun. thanks for the video, very informative and useful. best regards from Santos, Brazil

  • @danhitman2684
    @danhitman2684 3 года назад +4

    Can I sugest the most important difference is that doing a single or even double drop wallet is not a style thing but a functional thing on a front side carve. Rasta does this all the time because it works and keeps the rail engaged longer and bringing the board around. If you dont drop the wallet( drop your back arm first ) I reckon you will never be able to feel like you can push it.

    Old video and niche subject but any chance we could see something that deals with the opposite scenario? I’ve ridden singles and twin fins all my life because of the effortless speed and drive, and am finding it difficult to switch to a thruster when I feel like I want that extra grip and control. Something about the fact that I’m so used to being able to project way out onto the face has me finding difficulty making proper use of that cluster of fins.
    Also in San Diego, which aside from a few specific waves, lends itself more to twin fins the majority of the year.

    Awesome - how does a quad set up compare to both the twin fin and thruster set up?

    • @mcdance1311
      @mcdance1311 3 года назад +17

      Most would say a quad is less ‘pivoty’ than a thruster, but more ‘drivey,’ than thruster and the twin, and Less ‘glide’ than the twin fin.
      With a twin fin I just think about all that water flowing freely between the fins, giving you that glide and slide freedom, but less control. The center fin in a thruster fin feels to me like a rudder, a point to pivot off of for a more vertical approach on the wave face. The quad dials in aspects of both, some of the speed of a twin fin with more control.
      All depends on the feeling you want- I personally love the out of control, ‘who knows what it’s going to do’ aspect of a twinny.
      Also good to think about what shape they’re in- a quad fish and twin fish are going to surf similar compared to a standard hi performance short board. How flat, how thick is the board, how much rocker etc..
      Hope I helped!

      @@mcdance1311 nicely explained and mirrors my experience too. Quads are great on fast down the line type waves allowing - indeed promoting - speedy slices both bottom and lip where both manoeuvres will generate more speed. The central flat area like a twin allows almost as much face glide without loosing speed enough to lay a full rail swooping cutback. They aren’t as naturally snappy in the pocket, so a thruster 9 times out of ten is better in wedges, peaky beach breaks. Both the thruster and quad are arguably much better on a rail, however, my own twinny as well as many others I’ve seen well ridden are more than happy to hang in on only one fin submerged at virtual right angles to the water. God bless (or whom/what ever) the twin fin. It turned my surfing from very average performances to ones that won me some club outings. Regrets? I have had way more than a few, putting surfing on the back burner easily the most painfully stupid. If there is a god I wouldn’t blame him for displaying the ‘no vacancy’ sign once he learns of the chance I simply squandered.

    I’ve been loving my twin + 1 setup lately. Ive gone straight twin plenty of times, but my surfing style is more of a power surfer with long hard carves. The straight twin doesn’t let me do that without sliding out, and for me on bigger days bottom turns feel to loose on a straight twin. However the Twin + 1 for me is the sweet spot. It gives me the hold and stability where I need it but still looser then a thruster allowing me to slide the tail off the lip, carve and hold on my drop ins. If you haven’t tried it I highly recommend it 🤙🏾

    I have a question for you. What about size of the board? I am 1.73 cm tall and 65 kg weight, so what size would be adjusted to me?
    My normal board is between 5'9 and 5'11, 25/26 lts, and from what i've been investigating, a good size for a twin fin, let´s say a Album twnisman to have a good reference, would be somewhere between 5'4, 5'5 or even less and a few liters above my normal, so i guess 28 would be ok. Does it make any sense?
    I love the skateboard approach that this twin fins give to surfing, and myself coming from a 30 years plus of skateboarding, makes total sense to me :)

    Shit hot vid man!!!!!!!!!!!!! Surfing singles in the 70’s then 78’ got a sky twin fin shaped by Michael cundith. Figured it out pretty quick and what a Rocket! Completely different surfing. Of course, MR a legend of twins and buttons to name 2 kings of twins back in the day. Then, big Simon came up with the thruster and first one I rode 1981and again something different again and soooo good but, still have a great love of twins. They just rock!!☮️❤️🙂
