What a great video. I'm going to try and make one. Thanks for posting. I have a question though. On the last side of the bottom that was sewn, why couldn't you just sew the last side like the others and then use the holes to pull the right side out? Thanks again.
I make my holes smaller.... so the whole cube couldnt fit through such a small hole... I dont like making my holes bigger because it sinks the sides in... but your more then welcome to make your holes bigger so the whole cube fits through the hole but for me I just dont like that style. Plus it gives my pigs more coverage rather then having a huge hole taking up the entire side, and I know no other cozy maker does this since its more work on them, but for me I dont mind adding extra detail and work to my items. :)

You are such an inspiration! Thank you for putting up this video for those of us wanting to try our hand at making these! One question though; why the heavy duty foam over the regular .5 inch foams out there? I have never seen the heavy duty, so just curious as to what the difference would be. Thank you again for sharing your experience with us!!
The regular foam is easier to rip and not as flexible... You can for sure use it. Just know it may not last and it will lose shape over time... Its also harder to sew with due to its lack of flexibility and that it falls apart easier doesnt help... Haha... Thank you so much! I hope you are able to make your own cube! Just takes practice. :)))
I'm gonna give this a go hun wish me luck, I'm worried all these layers won't fit under the foot of my machine if not I have a lot of hand sewing to do 🤞🤞🤞🍀🍀🍀 xxx love your videos hun 😍😍😍
Love you channel! I want to make huts and cubes for my rats that will stand up and hold their shape. Have you ever used Bosal In-R-Form Sew in Foam Stabilizer?
Hi, I love this cube, but what is Haul? I have never heard of this, I live in the U.K. so maybe it's something that we don't have here. So what is the alternative? Thanks Val.
Valerie Poole : can you rent u-haul trucks when you move to a different residence or when you purchase furniture that’s too big for your vehicle, so you rent a truck for overnite or for a few hours. U-haul is the name of the truck rental company in the U.S. the company sells blankets for about $8.00 per blanket. You use the blanket(s), to cover the furniture so it doesn’t get scratched. The blankets are made of recycled denim. So we call the blankets u-haul. This is used in the cube or potty pads or liners for the bottom of your pet cage. The u-haul absorbs the pet urine, so your pet is not standing in or sleeping in the wet urine. When you are making these cage accessories, you have to condition your fleece. You wash the uncut fleece, in hot water with detergent that does not container perfumes, dyes or anything that could harm your pet. Then you dry the fleece and wash and dry 2 more times like the first time. I always use the recommended detergent on the bottle, for the first wash. When I get to the 2nd and 3rd wash I decrease the amount of detergent. The first time, you are washing away any fabric sizing or whatever the fabric manufacturer puts on the fabric. By the time you’ve washed and dried your fleece 3 times, you have conditioned your fleece so the urine goes through the fleece, bamboo batting and finally to the u-haul. Before you wash and dry your fleece the first time, pour a tiny amount of water on the fleece. The water should kind of pool up and it takes a little bit of time for the water to get absorbed by the fleece. After the 3rd wash and dry, do the water test again. The water will be absorbed by the fleece immediately. So imagine if you have all the layers sewn together. The center fabric ( in this case, the u-haul) will absorb the urine all through to the center. Now if you don’t have a truck rental company selling the moving blankets, a lot of people will go to Goodwill or a 2nd hand store ( I don’t know what you call them in the uk). Some people will buy used mattress pad covers, old towels or even flannel baby blankets, to use in place of the u-haul. It works just as good. The only complaint I’ve heard about the u-haul, is it takes a long time to dry in your dryer. And line drying could take a few days. I hope this helps. And I’m sorry for the long explanation, but I wanted to paint a picture with words, so you could visualize the sewing process. Start out with something easy like potty pads. Your pet will be happy and their little feet won’t get sore from standing in wet urine. Give it a try, it’s fun😇🐹🥰, Nancy
wow. Just...Wow. This is magic! I am so doing this and following your video the whole way. Also, how do I know if my machine can fit fat fabric without jamming and breaking the needle and activating the safety device every 5 seconds? Halp!
Thank you! Just know not all machines can go through thick layers, Also are you using the correct sewing machine needle? I use denim needles, if you just use a standard needle, most likely it will break if sewing through thick layers. But again it could also be the machine you are using. Everything I used in this video is linked in the description of it. :)
@@GuineaPiggiesDesigns I use a Brother Project Runway limited edition. It has an LCD screen, a thousand stitch designs, automatic thread cutting and presser foot lifter, and has buttons to control it without a pedal. But it is as useless as sewing with a carrot and some rope. I have other machines that are older and better quality probably so I will try that out. I just can't wait to make them and see the turnout!
Get a different sewing machine. Most home machines are not meant to go through thick layers. A great affordable starter machine I recommend is called a Singer Heavy Duty.
Hi Guinea Piggies Designs! Thank you for sharing. This is such a great video, you have inspired me (first time sewer) to have a go! Not sure if it will work or not, but going to give it a try, anyway. Any ideas what to use to mark out lines where you need to cut your fabric, if you were using black or dark coloured fleece fabric? My Mum used to used taylors chalk but it doesnt seem very efficient to me! ANy ideas? Thanks again. Cant wait to see how I get on :-)
have been making liners and pads for a yr now. decided to make some cubes following your video. how to you keep your presser foot from catching the foam? i am having issues with it sliding through while sewing the opening before cutting it
My sewing machine has a double feeder so I do not have that issue. My advice is to get a heavy duty machine. Regular at home machines are just not meant to sew through thick layers. So sorry.
Hello-I have just discovered and am in love with your tutorials. Would you tell me what kind of machine you use? I am not having much luck sewing through all these thick layers. (But I’m new to sewing so I’m not really sure of it’s the machine or just something I’m doing wrong. Anyway, thank you for any information!) Sarah
Hi Sarah! Check out my cozy essentials video! Everything I use is in that video! But quick answer I use a Janome 6600, goes for $2000.00 on amazon, I do talk about affordable machines in that video too. Check it out for more info. :) Also most home machines cannot handle the layers I sew through, so use less layers for your projects. :)
Wait whoaa. Pause ⏸ video to cone ask. Where hiw did you get a healing mat that big? Did you take obes together from the back to make a giant one. I just finally got a 18×12 and it$30 that was already more than I wanted to spend.
I got this big mat on amazon, the link should be in the description. :) The huge mat I have was around $300 but I have had it for 5 years so far and its still going strong.
Omg 300 on a mat I'd die lmao 😲 but I'm sure its made you that much money 10x over from its use. So I get it. Thats so cool though I didn't know they came anywhere near that big!! I got a 8×12 one at the dollar tree. It has actually held up being used compared to the one I got from Amazon.
@@amyeethomas2495 You dont need a huge mat, I started out with a smaller one too, just took up more time for me because I had to constantly move it if I was making a big cage liner, so the big mat just saves me time. But a small mat works too.
You mean instead of sewing it, use velcro? I mean you could.... I do not think it would wash up well, and I also think it would be a pain to put together.... But you could try it. As for me I would never use velcro, also know velcro is not safe for small animals that chew... So as long as your small animals do not chew it it should be fine. :)
@@GuineaPiggiesDesigns thank you for the tip but at the moment i do nit have a guinea pig but on the 7th my aunt is bringing two baby piggies that they had and is not from a petshop so i hope they do not chew as much
Do you add the bamboo batting just for extra cushion? Also, do you prewash and dry your fleece and uhaul before you sew it together? Btw this is the most easy to follow comprehensive video I've found on these thus far. Thanks!
I use bamboo batting for more protection so you dont have to wash them so much... haha... and no I do not pre wash my fleece. I wash after its made... :) And thank you so much, im so glad it was easy for you! I hope to have more up soon! :))))
Thanks so much for this tutorial. Question: if I don’t have Uhaul, can I double up with foam, fleece or batting? Can I pin instead of clip? Sorry I’m an amateur 🙈
Well the U haul is what absorbs the liquid, fleece, batting, and foam do not absorb anything, the liquid would pass right through those layers, you can use old towels, or terry cloth for your inner layers, but I would not recommend using fleece or batting as a absorbent layer.
Can’t wait to try after getting better at making liners! What needle do you use when you’re going through the sides and pads that have so many layers? I have a Singer Simple and am scared about sewing that many layers. I’m VERY new to sewing so maybe I don’t know exactly how strong sewing machines are?
Yeah I do not think your sewing machine can handle something so thick. I always use Denim needles for everything, but my machine also has a double acu feed which helps, but you can for sure try it on your machine, for me though if I had that machine I wouldnt. :)
Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial! Are your rotary squares true 12x12 and 10x10? I'm asking because the links you provided are for a 12.5x12.5 and a set where the largest square is 9.5x9.5. I'm new to sewing and not really familiar with the standards yet! Thanks again!
This is a great tutorial. One of the better ones for sure. But I did have a hard time reading the instructions. Some of them went by way to fast to read and trying to pause it was a pain. Thanks for sharing this though.
Thank you, and sorry it was going by fast, cubes take me a long time to make, maybe 3 hours, and no one wants to watch a 3 hour video. But one day ill do a updated version of this tutorial, maybe ill do a voice over one. But im glad it helped a little. :)
How much fleece is needed? I love your instructions, and how the video so clearly shows what your hands are doing. This project actually seems doable! Thank you for inspiring me.
This was amazing. One day I will attempt it. Question, what are the ribbons for? Are they necessary? Also, can you wash this even though it has foam in it? I’ve never washed foam so sorry if that’s a stupid question lol
The ribbons are used in case you want to hook it to your cage somewhere, but they are not necessary. And everything I make is washable, so yes you can wash this. :)
Do i need to use a special foot? I dont think my sewing machine can sew through stuff that thick. I tried to do 4 layers of fleece and it had a hard time. What can i do to sew thicker stuff like this? I have a Singer from the big box stores in the 90’s. Just a basic model
I thought i had a reasonable home sewing machine but there is NO WAY mine would go through that many layers!! Lovely though - gonna see if i can adapt it in a way so my machine can make it.
Its a Janome 6600... I do have a sewing video on my channel that lets you know everything I use and links for everything is in the description of that video. :)
@@GuineaPiggiesDesigns I recently purchased janome 6600 after watching your videos ! Can’t wait to start making things for myself / cats/ piggies 😍 thank you !
I have a question. I love this tutorial, but I don't like the wavy seams in the middle of each cubepart. Are they for decoration or are they for stabillity? Love your tutorial!!!💕
You can use any kind if stitch you want, I like the look of the wavy stitch but the seams on the cube are to ensure the layers stay together after washing many times. But you can use a straight stitch instead. :)
Sorry for the late reply but the foam is not really absorbent which is why I add U-Haul padding to the bottom. But it will not get messed up if you do not use U haul padding, its just the liquid will go right through it if that makes sense. :)
I will be doing tutorials on the basic stuff... but none on my original designs... So ill do one on the Tunnels, Hay Bags, I already have one on the cuddle cups... :) But once I get caught up on my orders I will be uploading again soon! Right now im working on a custom order video for my channel that shows my process... I hope to have it up soon! :)
I’m a little late to the party since this video was posted a while ago, but if you can answer this question thanks! Sooo what kind of needle and foot do you use?
No worries! I use Denim Sewing Needles and I use the foot that came with my sewing machine which is a Janome 6600, the foot I use will only work with a Janome 6600 because its a double feed foot...
I was wondering if is posible to flip through one of the holes or if it has to be through one open corner because the foam makes it too thick. And wont go through the hole. Thanks in advance.
I'm sad, I really loved the vid so I went on your Etsy to see what else you had because I wanted to get some new hides for my piggies but it said you have no products for sale at the moment😢
Hey Kate! Right now I am not accepting any new orders.... My wait list is full. but once I get caught up on my current orders I will be announcing on my facebook page when I am caught up.... But once I get caught up I will be working on premade items and only taking one custom order at a time to keep the wait time down... :)
Can I ask where you buy your bamboo and your 1/2” foam? I am assuming you purchase it by the roll. Thank you, I really enjoy your videos and it is putting my sewing skills to good use. I only sew for my guinea pigs. I have a custom cage, so it is saving me a lot of money. 1 more thing, where do you buy your fleece? Thank you, Nancy
Everything I used in this video is linked in the description... :) I also have a video where I share all my supplies and everything is linked there also. :)
@ sam. Do you use a machine? I'm usually able to just let the fabric pull it self along. Trust me I get the straight line struggle. I wear glasses with light prisms to correct me seeing at 2 different levels. I don't drive because I have such issues with depth perception. Its crazy lol
@@amyeethomas2495 Yes I use a sewing machine, link is in the description but I do hand sew up the openings on the pads, takes practice, but the more you do it, the easier it gets. :)
Great video! What kind of sewing machine are you using? I am looking to buy a sewing machine that can sew this many layers. The machine I have now can't handle it.
I use a Janome 6600, they are kinda hard to find... and they can range from $1000.00 to $2000.00 depending on the condition... Just know its very different from the 6500... the 6500 is cheaper and doesnt have the double acu feed like the 6600... But thats the best machine I could find for the price... :)
Yes anything is possible. Keep in mind this is very difficult. But if you somehow know the special techniques to do it by hand I dont see why you cant. For me, I couldnt. :)
I finally got one! My Janome 6600P should be here today! This is going to be the first thing I sew on it. Thank you so much for getting onto the kind of rugged sewing machine I needed. :)
How many yard of fleece fabric would I need for this project and how much foam ? Also how would you wash this item so that it looks as good as it last ?
and Six 10x10 inch squares of foam. as for washing, I wash my items on a normal wash and dry on a normal cycle. This can vary for how you sew your item. If you dont reinforce your seams then gentle cycle and let it air dry.
Yes everything is well! I posted a update on our facebook page... I was editing the video for the winner reveal and my computer crashed and i lost all my progress! Ahhh so I have to start over.... But we have the video recorded and its 2 hours long which im trying to edit it down to 15 minutes or less haha... Ill have it up soon no worries! And once I get that video up, hopefully I can get another tutorial up. Just also trying to get caught up with custom orders... Video editing takes a lot of time since Im still new to it... but once I get better Ill have videos up on the regular just need to better my editing skills before I do... hehehe .. :)
No it will not sew through thick layers.... Basic machines are only meant for clothing and basic sewing. I recommend you up grade to a singer heavy duty, it is the most affordable machine that can go through multiple layers.
@@GuineaPiggiesDesigns I’ve been checking prices for the Singer Heavy Duty machines. Is there a specific model you would recommend for “all things guinea pig”?
@@tammywebber5893 The Singer Heavy Duty does come in different models.... But just know they are all the same machine, only difference is the higher the price goes, the more stitches it has... So if you get the top of the line one it will just have more stitch designs... The cheaper model just doesnt have as many stitch options but all you really need to do is a straight stitch so the lowest model will work. :)
This video is old... I used to make my openings small, so I couldnt fit the whole cube through the opening hole, it was too big and therefore I left one of the bottom sides unsewed so I could pull it right side out and then I would hand sew up that hole to hide the seam... Now I do sew up all the sides and pull it right side out, but a long time ago I didnt do it that way. I learn from trial and error so these are things I tried to figure out on my own. :)
I’ve just rescued a guinea pig so definitely going to give this a try thank you for the great tutorial

But it is as useless as sewing with a carrot and some rope. I have other machines that are older and better quality probably so I will try that out. I just can't wait to make them and see the turnout!
@@ronfnswanson9790 Yes I used to own a Brother 350, and it didnt work for me. But hopefully your other machines work out. :D
@@GuineaPiggiesDesigns Thanks! Appreciate your support hope you have a good Holiday! and a happy new year!
Hi i was starting to sew the cube and my sewing machine won't go through the foam do you have suggestions? Btw you are so talented!
Get a different sewing machine. Most home machines are not meant to go through thick layers. A great affordable starter machine I recommend is called a Singer Heavy Duty.
@@GuineaPiggiesDesigns Ok thanks! I will try that out
Hi Guinea Piggies Designs! Cant wait to see how I get on :-)
I really do not mark my fabric but I would recommend a wax crayon... it comes off with heat so its a great option... Thank you so much!
Does anyone sew and watch these so that they have a sewing buddy, no just me, ok
Thank you Anna! Im so glad this video is helping you... :D
Haha nope I do the same thing lol
Anna Bella meee I dooo lol
have been making liners and pads for a yr now. decided to make some cubes following your video. how to you keep your presser foot from catching the foam? i am having issues with it sliding through while sewing the opening before cutting it
My sewing machine has a double feeder so I do not have that issue. My advice is to get a heavy duty machine. Regular at home machines are just not meant to sew through thick layers. So sorry.
If your machine has a plastic foot I found that to work better with the foam... Still requires some manipulation but better than regular foot
Hello-I have just discovered and am in love with your tutorials. Would you tell me what kind of machine you use? I am not having much luck sewing through all these thick layers. (But I’m new to sewing so I’m not really sure of it’s the machine or just something I’m doing wrong. Anyway, thank you for any information!)
Sarah
Guinea Piggies Designs Thank you! I will watch that essentials video and start saving for another machine! :-)
@@seran72ify Also, if your machine doesn't have it, a walking foot is a MUST HAVE for fleece projects!
Jessica Bickley Okay, good to know! Thank you! 🙏
I would love for you to remake this video with your voice over it. 😍😍
I already plan on doing a updated tutorial on this, just trying to finish my sewing series first. Thank you!
Will it be posible to make a cubehouse with velcro to atach it in MANY different waus
Thanks again!
for those pads, they are so thick i love them! i have an se400 brother machine... could that sew something so thick?? my piggies would love this
You can try. :) But I doubt it would be easy like my machine. I wouldnt recommend you use a regular home sewing machine. Try a heavy duty one. :)
Oh this must have been quite hard to sew, looks like super thick and sturdy, hope your animals didn't destroy it too quickly :D
How much fleece is needed?
I love your instructions, and how the video so clearly shows what your hands are doing. This project actually seems doable! Thank you for inspiring me.
I woulld get 2 yards to be safe of each fabric... Thank you so much!
Thank you! :D
Can you Tell me the model of your sewing machine please? It is awesome
Janome 6600
This was amazing. One day I will attempt it. Question, what are the ribbons for? Are they necessary? Also, can you wash this even though it has foam in it? I’ve never washed foam so sorry if that’s a stupid question lol
The ribbons are used in case you want to hook it to your cage somewhere, but they are not necessary. And everything I make is washable, so yes you can wash this. :)
Hi Will this foam be okay if you put it in the washing machine. Thanks 😊.
Yes, it is washable. :)
@@GuineaPiggiesDesigns Thanks for your reply😊. Your designs are really amazing and very creative.
Have a nice day!!!!
I’m completely new to sewing so this is probably a silly question but what kind of thread is needed?
I use a 50wt cotton thread, link is in description, but you can use whatever works for you.
You could always use different materials! Use what works for you. :)
may i ask what sewing machine model you have?? its so cool! my machine would cry at that many layers!
Its a Janome 6600... I do have a sewing video on my channel that lets you know everything I use and links for everything is in the description of that video. :)
@@GuineaPiggiesDesigns thankyou!!
@@GuineaPiggiesDesigns I recently purchased janome 6600 after watching your videos ! Can’t wait to start making things for myself / cats/ piggies 😍 thank you !
@@therealbosswivesboss5837 Thats awesome!
hey so this is probably a stupid question but... is the foam absorbent? it won’t get messed up if it doesn’t have a pad?
Sorry for the late reply but the foam is not really absorbent which is why I add U-Haul padding to the bottom. But it will not get messed up if you do not use U haul padding, its just the liquid will go right through it if that makes sense. :)
Can you do a video showing how you make tunnels, couches, and beds?
I use denim sewing needs and I use a double acu feed foot that is only made for a Janome 6600.
I was wondering if is posible to flip through one of the holes or if it has to be through one open corner because the foam makes it too thick. And wont go through the hole.
Thanks in advance.
I used to make my holes small so the whole cube wouldnt fit through the opening.... But if you make the opening bigger it does. :)
Hi, is it washable? Does the foam and U Haul stand up to a washing machine? Thank you :)
Yes its washable! :D
Nice tutorial! Could you just turn the whole thing right side out through one of the holes and machine stitch that last side seam??
You can if you make the entrance hole bigger. That's what I did.
how good is that
hello its very nice ,i make it for my rats ,she love it 😂🤣
Thank you!
me: “how hard can it be to sew in a straight line pppffff“
*me gets everything I need and tries it*
“how the............”
Lol. Just follow your seam allowance, never look at your needle. :)
What’s the difference between the bamboo and uhaul fillers? Just bamboo being absorbent?
What is the benefit of the Uhaul material? Besides padding, of course. 😉
it absorbs the Urine/liquid.. For foam it will just sink right through. The Bamboo batting also helps absorb Urine/liquid... :)
Question do I wash the cube cube sense it has foam or nothing happens to the foam
Foam is washable. Everything I make is washable. :)
Can I use cotton batting instead of bamboo? Does it make a big difference?
You can use whatever works for you... Bamboo absorbs way more then cotton....
Guinea Piggies Designs
Thank you for the information. 😊
Can you do it without sewing machine
Yes anything is possible. Keep in mind this is very difficult. But if you somehow know the special techniques to do it by hand I dont see why you cant. For me, I couldnt. :)
I finally got one! My Janome 6600P should be here today! This is going to be the first thing I sew on it. Thank you so much for getting onto the kind of rugged sewing machine I needed. :)
Hi just wondering where do you get the foam from
Link for the foam is in the video description, I get it from Joanns
How many yard of fleece fabric would I need for this project and how much foam ? Also how would you wash this item so that it looks as good as it last ?
I would say 2 yards of each fabric.
and Six 10x10 inch squares of foam. as for washing, I wash my items on a normal wash and dry on a normal cycle. This can vary for how you sew your item. If you dont reinforce your seams then gentle cycle and let it air dry.
@@GuineaPiggiesDesigns Thanks 😊
hi!!! firstly i wanted to say that this video was really helpful. but how did you sew such thick layers? and what sewing machine are you using? :)
Chenibbles it takes practice. I use a Janome 6600. :) Thank you!
Hope all is well with you! Haven't posted in awhile :(
Yes everything is well! Video editing takes a lot of time since Im still new to it... but once I get better Ill have videos up on the regular just need to better my editing skills before I do... hehehe .. :)
Guinea Piggies Designs just making sure you were OK :)
I have a basic sewing machine. Will it be able to handle sewing through 6 layers? What setting should I need to adjust.
oof I'll be trying this soon for hedgehogs
What does the bamboo batting do for the pads?
It helps absorb and provides comfort.
I make small animal bedding ... when i make cubes i pull them thru the hole.... why did you do it the opposite then hand stitch?
This video is old... I used to make my openings small, so I couldnt fit the whole cube through the opening hole, it was too big and therefore I left one of the bottom sides unsewed so I could pull it right side out and then I would hand sew up that hole to hide the seam... Now I do sew up all the sides and pull it right side out, but a long time ago I didnt do it that way. I learn from trial and error so these are things I tried to figure out on my own. :)
@@GuineaPiggiesDesigns thank you for the video. Ive never worked with foam so this very much helped me.
