Open source means that anyone can see the code and confirm that there is nothing malicious about it. But for those people who are less technically oriented, a closed system where one puts all of one's trust in a corporation, Apple in this case, might be better for that particular person. However, I can easily say the free and open-source is the future.

For those who wonder, there is also a thing in some linux systems which is called a package manager (rpm, aptitude, pacman, yum), that existed long before Apple store that precisely centralize the installation and updates of programs on the computer and can download the program from a controlled server completely free of viruses. So this is not an apple thing, this is not something new, this is not something particular to mobile and this doesn't imply to pay for it.

    • @Aussiex77x
      @Aussiex77x 8 лет назад

Apple added a whole bunch of safeguards that Linux package managers don't have. There's no organisation managing the package manager so it's going to be far less controlled and filtered.

Well ... This is embarassing ...
Backports is not a package manager ... Try APT instead ...

    • @alphazar

The precursor to Apple App Store was Electronic App Wrapper, which was the first ever app store. It was developed for Next OS, utilizing package manager already existing in Unix systems before Linux existed. The app store is much more than a package manager though. Apple bought Next and Next OS become the precursor to Mac OS and iOS. So the history of Apple App Store is much older than Linux.

This is not really different than how Google Play works, they also scan code for malicious Apps, pull bad ones from the store, etc. etc. The main difference is that Apple REQUIRES you to download from their AppStore, REQUIRES devs to write apps on SDKs that only work on overpriced Mac computers, and PREVENTS you from running your own code on your own device without paying them. Basically, thinks you can't handle yourself in a big scary digital world. For most people, that's probably true. This is why I consider iPhones/iPads entry-level smart devices. When you don't need a digital nanny telling you what you can do, there's Android waiting to give you full control of your digital world.

    • @CRogers
      @CRogers 10 лет назад +10

jackendy cherenfant What are you on about? Both Apple and Google have had malware in their App stores, that had to be removed manually by both companies on several occasions (so again, yes it works exactly the same way). With Android you don't have to root to run your own programs. That's a freedom you get out of the box. You just check a box in your security settings that says "allow installation of 3rd party apps". If you are talking about direct hacking, it has been shown time and time again that both can be hacked directly, just as any computer system can be hacked. The odds of that happening to any one person are about the same as tripping on the sidewalk and dying from it. So yes, you can probably be a little safer with Apple's clandestine restrictions. Be sure to wear your crash helmet when you walk down the street just to be sure! ;)

Anyone remember when apple made stuff that people with brains wanted?
Before they just made shiny things and charged the earth for them even though cheaper products dud more.
All jobs said was that apple is still as virus prone as anything else, it's just that apple will know, cry and stop other people downloading the program IF... it comes from their application store as opposed to an antivirus picking it up because you torrented it and it had a virus or you downloaded it from some other dodgy place.
I suppose the plus is that if something bad happens, you can sue apple (although they've no doubt excused themselves of liability for anything that happens by using applications from their store in the small print).

The good thing about widgets is that you can get things like weather, news, sports scores, store updates and whatever else within one screen. I know the title of this video is wrong, but I have to say this, one thing I really liked about Steve is that he was really big on quality, and knew when they made mistakes, and always worked to fix them. The problem with Tim is that he likes to just say that IOS, and iPhone is flawless, and little fixes are needed, I don't think Steve would of put up with Siri, or Apple maps, and the overall quality decline in their products, Tim has done things that are good that I don't think Steve would of done, but I just don't think he and Apple don't have a clear vision like they used to.

Both operating systems have cons. So far the most reliable os is ios jailbroken . Even with all the tweaks I have the phone doesn't lag unlike some of the high end android smartphones

    • @KristopherWilliams_tahmson

The way Apple is designed, and the methods they use for their products, work extremely well for some technological aspects. When Apple, or a third-party app publisher writes software, there aren't a ridiculous amount of devices that they must keep in mind. The OS on their products have been optimized beyond belief almost, since they stick with a minimum amount of products. This is the reason why you've noticed the smoothness of the iPhone, and the lag on Android is immediately apparent.
For most people, that is reason enough to use Apple products, and personally I respect that and appreciate the company for their methods. However, I'm partial to technology that inhibits creativity and opportunity. Obviously you can be plenty creative with any device, or anything for that matter, but I'm speaking more on customization. With an Android device I'm able to take the hardware inside of the phone's shell and use it however I'd like. There are limitless possibilities with Android, since Linux from the foundation is built upon a philosophy that's hard to disagree with, unless you're a corporation and your main priority is profit.
Anyways, I thought I'd throw that out there. By the way, there are several methods to eliminate the "lag" on Android phones. One method is simple, tune the home screen animations, or any animations you've set with the phone. Most times, default is set to a silly amount, demanding immediate RAM usage. Most times after using your phone, you've many apps cached, and that subtle but noticeable stutter is your cpu dumping apps for resources. If you're even slightly tech savvy, there are apps that allow you to fine tune how much memory can be used by cached apps, and just so much more...
Check out an app called, System Tuner. It's extraordinary

When you root your android phone, it just makes it even faster depending on what you do with it (overclocking the cpu, killing unnecessary apps, etc). Rooting the phone doesn't make it slower. Rooting the phone in itself changes absolutely nothing about the phone until you do something.

I admire Apple being closed source to keep solid, however they have tightened that rope so tight that their consumers now see how uncustomizable they are. Windows and Android today have a ton of security protocol behind them and fully customizable to meet the customer needs. Apple is clearly deciding what we should like instead of giving us the liberty of what we really want. Case in point, iPhone OS with apps all over the homepage hasn't changed since the original iPhone was introduced.

Sure it is can you customize your iPhone without jailbreaking it? Can you have different ROM's to choose from? Can you overclock your hardware? If it can do these things please show me if not then shut up. Plus in my book no OS is better than another as they do things differently and everyone has their own opinions on which OS is best for them. The only time an OS is better is in your own opinion of an OS as everyone has different opinions their choice in OS's may be the same or different from yours.

***** So why hasn't tht apple user experience improved?
The term "it just works" is just a marketing phrase created by Steve Jobs If it really "just works" then how can anyone explain :
      1. Antenngate
      2. Scuffgate
      3. Mapsgate
      4. iOS 8gate
      5. Bendgate
these are just a few along with many other problems like:
      1. Rattling power button
      2. Overheating
      3. Mic not working
      4. Touch ID not working and easily hacked by Chaos Computer Club
      5. Battery failing
      6. Battery going on fire
      7. Apple pay charging customers twice or more
      8. Purple haze on camera
      9. Compass and accelerometer off by several degrees
      Etc. Etc. Etc. Etc.
I'm sure there are plenty more that I don't even know about, but just take a look at the Apple help pages on their own website and you'll witness lots of other people saying how shit their apple products are. Come on, its not just me saying this.
So remember, when you're about to type "it just works" ask yourself, does it really "just work"? or is it just a phrase that's been repeated over and over again until you sheeple blindly believe it?
Had NONE of this with my non-apple phone!

Steve Jobs was the best because he wouldn't take no for an answer. Theses days if you go up to a company and say hello I'm not happy with my new laptop but I can pay you to make it smaller faster and 3x more powerful. THE COMPANY SAYS oh I'm sorry sir that's not possible because we don't have the resources. And you say ahhh ok then no worries. But Steve Jobs always got what he wanted 😎 he definitely had a personality disorder but he forced the impossible to happen. AND NOBODY ELSE CAN DO THAT BECAUSE THERE FUCKING SCARED AND SELFISH!!!! In 2001 the iPod was pretty impossible and everyone told Jobs that it couldn't happen. And he told them to all fuck of and made them do it anyway. Hundreds of people got fired in the process. He was right and they where all wrong. The problem with to day is that nobody wants to develop something that hasn't been developed yet. An 8 GB phone won't be released for another 3 or 4 years. When we could make it right now. But why would companies make it now when they can make million selling the same old shit next year and the year after.

      @andrewmriv 10 лет назад +1

Steve Jobs is obviously a bit biased and is bringing up the worst case scenarios because there are many dumb users that don't take good care of their PCs.
You are obviously good at managing your PC by doing things like staying away from clicking on incorrect links, you probably have a good anti virus since many free ones exist, but at where I work there are SO many users that acquire malware and constantly make their PCs unusable.
It's unfortunately those that are not very tech-savy that usually get into those.
There are also other known issues like incompatibility (or not very stable) with a mix of hardware which cause a less stable environment as well as things like the Blue Screen of Death that can happen out of nowhere.
I'm glad that you love your PC. I build gaming PCs and have never had an issue with it because free anti viruses like Avast plus some common sense will keep your PC safe and it won't be the way Steve Jobs describes them to be.
I also own Macs (so I use both almost equally) and the difference is big.
Since Apple chooses the hardware and software of all Macs, they all just work super well together and you don't get incompatibility issues as often as you would on a PC which utilizes several different combinations of Hardware.
Also, this could soon change, it is nearly impossible to get any sort of malware on a Mac. I would not say impossible because that would be untrue but it is pretty much unnecessary to have an anti virus on a Mac.
While having a free anti virus might not seem like a big deal and it really isn't much upkeep (just let it always be up to date and when clicking a link, listen to your anti virus when it stops you, and scan regularly), many users will not do that. Many will be a PC from Dell or HP or someone else and have a free trial for an anti virus, let it run out, and then get their computer screwed up. Or others might get horrid anti virus program like Bit Defender and not really be safe. Others even fall for the ads that say things like "Click Here to clean up your computer" and then get malware.
      Bottom line:
Steve Jobs exaggerates trying to advertise that ALL Windows PCs suck. That is not the case. However, he has been successful in making Macs easier to use and be a lot more stable.

You don't have to "take care" of a Mac in order for it to be safe. We learned to install certain Anti Viruses in order for out PC's to be safe. I have no APPLE products and you can still call me an APPLE fanboy if you want but I'm not preaching you what you are trying to preach I'm doing... Dig? If you didn't know what Anti Virus you need and you didn't already know what things to avoid on the internet, how would you be in this tate where our PC's are safe? People with no knowledge usually get their PC's slower or infected by a malicious malware, but Steve's point is that it's 99% impossible on APPLE products.

The app store doesn't violate privacy as much as it violates freedom. When you buy something, it should be yours, just as when you buy a house and paint the walls, you should be able to buy a mobile computer and install or modify it as you please. More often than not they're just blocking apps that denies them profit, such as anything licensed under the GPL.
