- What's up modern rockers and riff enthusiasts, this video is designed to help get you started with developing your right hand technique in the modern rock and metal genres. I think you'll find this video informative for developing your right hand palm muting technique. You'll also learn a little bit of history on the term djent from my perspective. So for Djent I need a noise gate, a tube screamer and then the amp. Because I have the most basic fender amp with very little sound settings and no pedals or anything. Because playing muted strings pretty much just sounds like nothing so far
I'm a huge fan of Line 6 Helix stuff, Yamaha THR, Brainworx Plugins among others for djent. To play djent through your Fender, I think you would need a noise gate (Boss NS-2) is a good one, and some type of Hi Gain pedal. If you've got a high gain amp, any old tube screamer or OD and a noise gate will do.

Great video. Thanks for the lesson without the cringe like almost all the other YT vids these days. I'm having a hard time with what I call instantaneous chugging. I can move my pick really fast but I have to start at a moderate speed. I can't seem to just quickly chuggity chug stop. Chuggity chug stop. An example song would be Danger Line by Avenged Sevenfold. How the heck do folks do this so well? I can't get my hand to consistently do this. It almost seems like a twitching motion. I've been practicing a lot too.
Great comment Drew. My suggestion would be to use a metronome and try playing sixteenth notes at 100 BPM. You can practice playing groups of 4, 8, 12 or 16 while stopping on different beats. I'm working on a second djent lesson and I can definitely go over this.

I took off from playing for 6 years and my biggest struggle is locking up while alternate palm muting fast. I can do it in spurts really fast no issues whatsoever but man.. once I do straight up and down alternate palm muting and I fall apart. I also keep changing pick gauge every two minutes like a tool lol

I have an Axefx 3 now but I just want to say to the people who use real amps and stompboxes, check out the BBE Sonic Maximizer foot pedal. I RUclipsd to see what was out there and found many people hating on it. I don't understand why because when used correctly, it makes your tone come out of the mud and into a crystal clear lake, so to speak. And I highly highly recommend getting one if you're using a Metalzone because it cleans that signal straight up and helps you get crushing brutal tones. That's my pro tip.

The rack unit was used on countless records in the 90s from both the metal and rock world, then people grew a little tired of the sound and moved away, then the pedal and other iterations came out and it came back into popularity in the mid 2000s, right around the time I started playing guitar. A ton of my fellow touring guitar buddies in the deathcore, metal core, hardcore and metal scenes were using the Sonix Max stuff. It really enhances the high end and the low end for that incredible scooped sound. Great suggestion my friend, and thanks for watching!!!

I have a shecter demon 8. Scale there is also 28. I can not adjust it in E. The string tension is too tight already at D #. String gauge 9-80. Can you please tell me what string gauge do you use on your hellraiser? Can't Demon 8 be played in standard tuning at scale 28?
I believe that I was using 9 to 74 in this video. I did not mind the string tension with that string gauge, but if you want it to be looser I would look at getting a set of .008 gauge strings and then buying a .064 and a .074 gauge string separately. Great vid. I've been doing djent with bass. If you don't have to mix high notes in or play terribly fast, it works. Great drones, control, and rhythm. I started doing that in dorms since bass generally makes less noise. I never knew it had a term at that point. You can mess with the treble and turn a cheap bass into something sinister. I had a B.C. Rich Warlock... what else do you do?

How come there is no mention of whatever you have strapped across the strings past the nut? I see ppl use string clips and all other velcro straps at the nut or the bridge. Talk about technique and all, but what's that velcro strap?
Hey Robert, thanks for watching the video. The velcro Gruv gear strap around the neck on the other side of the nut mutes any noise that can come from high gain and string ringing on the other side of the nut. This helps mitigate some of the excess noise. Another use for the Gruv Gear strap is to help mute the strings like during tapping. The best thing to learn is to mute with your hands though. Convinced you changed my life because I went to catch 33 after watching this and played entrapment randomly and that's the craziest intro to a genre so thanks.
If you don't mind me asking, as a guy that has been playing on a 7 string playing songs from Polaris and staying in the metal core sound but not so much djent, would learning scale shapes on my JS 227 dinky improve my technique that I feel sounds weak
Catch 33 is still to this day my favorite album in the genre! Very cool of you to mention that album. Yes! I would definitely recommend learning scales on your 7 string as well as learning your favorite metal tunes to challenge yourself! Best of luck man!

Hey Barney, thanks for your response here. First of all, yes you are correct, djent is the closest thing to weigh lifting in the music world, and all good djent artists spend at least 50% of their time at the gym. Since I've never seen you play djent or lift weights, I'm going to assume that I'm at least 10x more powerful than you.
