Nobody sais Autostop doen, we say liften

In Nederland zegt men inderdaad liften. In Vlaanderen doen we autostop. Een lift nemen wij in plaats van de trap.

@@VloeiendVlaams nee wij zeggen ook liften, ik heb nog nooit van autostop doen gehoord. Het zal ongetwijfeld wel bestaan en ik geloof je dat het dan ook enkel in België in gebruik is maar dit als voorbeeld nemen voor verschil in taal is gewoon ver gezocht en als mensen dit leren om te gebruiken in België denk ik zelfs dat vele Belgen niet gaan verstaan wat het betekend tot je liften zegt.

Flemish nor Vlaams are languages: they are umbrella terms for Dutch-based dialects as spoken in Belgium.

    • @MustardSkaven

      Flemish is two things:
      1. The collection of dialects spoken in Flanders
      2. A term for "Belgian Dutch", which is a language

@@nurailidepaepe2783 Flemish is a word used to indicate "Belgian Dutch", which is a language. Sorry to break it to you.
The term Flemish itself has become ambiguous. Nowadays, it is used in at least five ways, depending on the context. These include:
An indication of Dutch written and spoken in Flanders including the Dutch standard language as well as the non-standardized dialects, including intermediate forms between vernacular dialects and the standard. Some linguists avoid the term Flemish in this context and prefer the designation Belgian-Dutch or South-Dutch
      Further information: Dutch in Belgium
A synonym for the so-called intermediate language in Flanders region, the Tussentaal
An indication of the non-standardized dialects and regiolects of Flanders region
An indication of the non-standardized dialects of only the former County of Flanders, ie the current provinces of West Flanders and East Flanders, Zeelandic Flanders and Frans-Vlaanderen[12]
An indication of the non-standardized West Flemish dialects of the province of West Flanders, the Dutch Zeelandic Flanders and French Frans-Vlaanderen
      Further information: West Flemish

It’s not really possible to compare the two since ´flemish’ is not really an official language. It’s more of an accent. A variation on dutch. The official language in Belgium is Dutch, not Flemish. Meaning if I would say ´botten’ the teacher would correct me and make me say ´laarzen’ just like they say it in the Netherlands.

    • @MustardSkaven
      @MustardSkaven 4 года назад +2

There is a de facto, semi-standardised variation on Dutch that people refer to as "Flemish". Never seen TV shows where people use "hebt gij..." instead of "heb je..."? It's what most Flemish speak when talking to someone from a different region. As a Limburger, I can't properly understand someone from West Flanders so I would use this unofficial version of Dutch we call "Flemish".
I don't know any Flemish people that actually use "je" or "jij" outside of the educational system.
So just because it isn't official doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

kinda yes. We have words that derived from French. Like briquet, which is a lighter. But it's only the French words we use. :)

The thing alot of people seem to forget is that the dutch spoken in Southern Nederlands is closer to Flemish (personally i think it is Flemish). There is a reason both countries have regions called brabant. So using geographical maps is not doing the dialects any service.
