    Stick holding, absolutely essential to progressing with the instrument.

    With my younger students, we have a saying: “LEADERS!” (Thumb & Forefinger), and “HELPERS!” (Middle, Ring, Pinkie). Little memorable sayings like that help a lot.

    All this time I thought you hold the drumstick by the skinny end and gnaw away at the meat on the big end till it's all gone .... As for hair , I say "Hair today , gone tomorrow" .....On a serious note, thanks for all your effort making these videos .... They are very good .....Have a wonderful new year and we'll keep in touch .....

    I'm interested in one thing as a beginner, I hold the bats just like this, on the bottom third, and when I practice, the bat happens to slip in my hand, and when I grip it a little firmly, my palm starts to cramp... is there an explanation? ?

    • @NickC84
      @NickC84 7 месяцев назад +1

      I have the same issue, I'm starting to learn there is a super fine line on how hard/soft to grip, I also find if I push the stick into the crease on my finger (the joint) it can rotate and bounce but not slide as much. That and trying your best to keep your stick bouncing on the fulcrum where it teeter totters back and forth but doesn't bounce and slide everywhere. It's a lot of moving parts and I'm fairly certain it's just a lot of practice to get it right.

      I've had the same problem. It takes a lot of practice. It took me a year until I was comfortable. I used to get frustrated. And now its 2nd nature.

      I used to have that same problem, it took me a year to train my left hand. I used my sticks the old fashioned way too

    Is it okay if the butt of the stick hits the fleshy part of the palm?

    • @NickC84
      @NickC84 7 месяцев назад +1

      No, It'll kill your rebound. Rotate your hand a bit more and don't be afraid to move the stick away from your hand a bit with your fingers. Drumming is more with the fingers than with the hand. The stick should be parallel to your palm.

    • @garyswartzlander8781
      @garyswartzlander8781 6 месяцев назад

      Plus, your hand will cramp up.

  • @NickC84
    @NickC84 7 месяцев назад

    This is no knock on you, I see it a lot when watching tutorials as a new drummer as I'm sure for experienced drummers it's so natural they don't think about it anymore but... You show the thumb on top but when you start playing you rotate your hand where your thumb is on the side. Won't the thumb on top impair the rebound? I get better rebound with my thumb loosely holding on the side like I did when you played.
