    Thanks for all the great constructive comments and discussion everyone! Camera quality is comprised of many aspects, but in the end it really comes down to personal preference in what we each like to see. With that, I ask that we keep the comments to being constructive and appropriate conversation (i.e. no name calling or inappropriate comments please).

      after a long time i'm happy to see sony capturing the camera division again with a phenomenal camera system.... thing is that customers seem to be more interested in a beautiful photo than a realistic photo
      the more they realise the fact the better the sony's future would be

      Yep, its true. Its all about the services. :)
      I dont know why Sony's keeping their smartphone game when theyre already excelling with their Playstation division.
      Yes they sell but only in a few.
      What if they just limit their expenses only to those who really want their phones?
      Like in UK
      And cutdown the cost with their Sony stores.
      Their Sony stores here in the Philippines are quite big and a beautiful place to visit.
      But theres always no people in there. Just their staffs and people who buy PS4s.

    low-light performance, both have wins and losses
    xzs seems to handle light and dark scenarios easily very much while Samsung takes the better details in low-light
    and sometimes, Sony has a better color but other times, Samsung look better
    For the selfie-camera and stabilization, there is no contest, xzs takes the cake with its wide FOV

    Wow look at that inconsistent exposure of the S8
    Is that the effect of Multiple Frame Processing? Very noticeable at the last part of the video on the front facing camera
    Daylight - XZs (color is subjective, but detail is nailed it on the XZs)
    Zoom - S8 (despite having more grain, you get more detail)
    Color - XZs (seemed more realistic throughout every scenario)
    Focus - S8 (slightly faster, but XZs focuses more accurately)
    Stabilization - Tie (XZs looked more stable in daylight but S8 looks more consistent in low light)
    Detail Photo - Tie (XZs for daylight, S8 for low light)
    Detail Video - XZs (far more natural without too aggressive sharpening)
    Sound - Tie (While the S8 is louder, XZs is better at cancelling the wind noise without a sacrifice too much for volume)
    Video fluidity - XZs (S8 often looked dropping frames when you panned)
    I'll give it to the XZs, but both are exceptional shooters

      Zoom s8? Kidding dude? I dont like the blur u get on the s8 focus. But both are great when it comes to camera. But i would never buy the s8, the camera is the same as the s7, it has a smaller battery and no home button and a weird display. so you get black barrs at videos Samsung flopped for me at this one.

    • @mirceabyd
      @mirceabyd 7 лет назад

      Batvolle wrong. so many diffrences between the s8 camera and s7. Also, s8 is the first smartphone with 10nm microchip(save energy) and that s why 3000maH is enough for s8 :)

      color is definitely not subjective. its whatever accurately portraits the real life. Color has always been Sony's strong point.
      also, video quality is always unmatched its superior on the sony in ever way including stabilizaiton

    • @PaulHojda
      @PaulHojda 7 лет назад +4

      They don't use the same camera module. The sony has a 1/2.3 inch sensor and f2.0 aperture, while the S8 has a slightly smaller 1/2.5" sensor but a wider f1.7 aperture. Also, not all S8's use a Sony sensor. Similar to the S7, some of them have Samsung sensors

    Great video man. Thumbs up .
    Video Footage- (Daylight)
    4K- Sony (Excellent stabilization)
    auto-focus - sony.
    Zoom - both performed same. Sony was shaky while zooming and Samsung's was noisy when zoomed. So it is a tie.
    Front facing- Sony (Again stabilization)
    Photo:
    Daylight: Tie. Sony is more realistic, so shadows were darker (as it is). While Samsung produced overstated images but with good dynamic range. So it depends on personal preference. (I prefer realistic images from sony)
    Night-shot: Samsung. (I'l never trust auto mode in sony for night shots). Samsung has less noise since it as lower 12MP, so it seemed better. But color reproduction on both was bad. Samsung produced washed-out colors while sony's was more yellowish.
    Video footage (Nightlight):
    4K- Sony (though it was dark). Samsung tried to brighten up and it appeared so noisy.
    1080p - Sony. (Stabilization and colors were better).
    Front camera- Sony again.
    Selfie (Daylight): Personal preference, but i liked colors and details in sony.
    Selfie (Night-shot): Personal preference again.

      Stranger_in_black
      Fair points, but for Zoom, I'd give the slight win for the S8 for pulling out more detail
      For low light, it's the S8's game, but I'm kind of impressed at how little the XZs is far - usually low light shooting is a night and day of difference between Sony and Samsung, but it's getting closer and closer. Good to see Sony is improving. Hoping the XZ Premium with SD835 process things better

      J. Williams agreed 💪😁

    • @freddywayne
      @freddywayne 7 лет назад +1

      J. Williams - It all comes down to software algorithms because both phones use Sony's Exmor sensors. Samsung's camera software defaults to bring in more light resulting in brighter dark areas & it's front-facing camera is better. Sony's camera software wins everywhere else with better Macro, color accuracy, less noise (less grainy) & better image stabilization.
      Overall, I think the Sony XZS is the winner in this head-to-head.

      No I would have to disagree about the LG G6 camera. Check the comparisons. The S8 is way better camera wise. There is something wrong with this video, if you notice each time he switches to the S8 voice-over it shows the true coloration. It's as if the video gets more grainy and brighter a few seconds after the voice kicks in. This is NOT how my S8 looks. Mine looks less grainy and less bright.

      S Saini Yeah, but still weird, cause most flagships that I've tried and contains OIS don't have such issues

    • @ssaini5028
      @ssaini5028 7 лет назад +11

      Johnny Pigman degradation would probably get worse reason why samsung put a 10 min 4K recording limit. It's a major issue not really being covered by major media tech outlets.

    • @Slash310579
      @Slash310579 7 лет назад +1

      Jello Effect on 4k is only there when you have OIS + digital stabilization activated. Disable digital stabilization in the settings and the jello effect is gone but then the image is a bit more unstable.

    • @GrantLikesTech
      @GrantLikesTech  7 лет назад +1

      I did not notice any heat issues, which did surprise me especially on the Sony as they have a history of overheating. The S8 has a 10 minute limit on 4k recording. I did several takes back to back, so it was at least 10 minutes worth of 4k footage on each device all together for this. I would need to do a continuous 4k recording to see how long the XZs can go.

Overall the S8plus was the winner but I wasn't expecting much from the XZ and it was actually pretty good. I liked the Sony better, overall for daylight shooting, but the S8 was better for low light. That said though, S8 low light performance in these conditions didn't seem particularly good either, it just seemed better.

      Goran Petrovic Audio is actually a preference here. While I do love the volume of the S8's microphone, XZs has incredible noise reduction for wind noise, hence why I could barely hear any annoying wind noise

    I had the Xperia Z,Z2 and Z3 and Galaxy S6..and now iPhone 6S Plus. I never liked the camera on the Sony, but this time I am really impressed. I am really surprised how bad can be the S8 in some situation. I think the XZ is winning in most of the situation. It is true that at night the XZ is not that light but it is more realistic than the grainy S8. I really like the XZ and I think I might get it soon. The 6S Plus is good in daylight but so poor in low light. Great review and well done Sony!

    Grant, excellent comparison video as always. The shooter on the XZs is fantastic. It looks like both cameras perform well and are a toss up depending on the situation. There were some shots where the XZs made the S8 look like a budget camera haha. Although the low light shots on the S8 come out brighter, they look a little overexposed compared to the XZs. The famous shot looking out from the fountain produced some insanely deep blues. Makes me think about my S8+ purchase 🤔 lol. Keep up the good work!

    • @GrantLikesTech
      @GrantLikesTech  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks Reggie. I agree, these great phones went back and forth. I've learned camera quality is measurable, but at the end it all comes down to personal preference and what we each like to see and hear. Low light, some like the bright but sometimes over exposed pics, and others like photos with more contrast that may be darker and more realistic to the moment.

    Daylight video - Easy win for XZs. Slightly softer but more natural details, and MUCH MUCH better stabilisation. S8 is utterly rubbish with its horrible jittery + choppy panning and a lot of frame drops.
    Night time video - S8. Slightly better stabilisation and even though it is less natural, every object in a scene is clearly identifiable and I would take it any day over dark mess of XZs(even though it looks closer to what you see on your eyes)
    Daylight still - S8. Much better dynamic range, but that's about it. XZs performs very similarly in terms of colour saturation and details.
    Night time still - S8 all the way. Better details, more natural colours (XZs renders amber street ramps as being completely yellow while S8 shows it as containing both yellow and red light), better dynamic range etc.
    Overall I will still take S8's camera, but XZs comes close - Now imagine if XZs had OIS and allows up to 1/4 of the second shutter speed... It would have been surely one of the best camera in the market right now.

      Dreamscape Actually, your Z3 only has poor camera hardware, but a good image processing
      XZs's image processing is too aggressive at noise reduction and oversharpening that often results to softer photos in low light. Z3's lack of detail is from the 8mp max resolution for S. Auto

Me personally they both have fantastic cameras, also I don't own any of these two brands but I think that Sony took the crown in this review. Just for being far more realistic in colour saturation depth of field and also when zooming in on the building. Really nice job with the video though fantastic.

    I find images to be personal preference, however, each camera seems to take turns at getting the 'better image' throughout. Note I find the white balance to be more accurate and pleasing from the S8. What's with the flickering and choppy 4k on the S8 too, mine never does that in video, rather strange. I agree that the Sony stabilisation wins hands down in any case, (I did prefer the 1080p footage in low light from the S8 on the front camera however). Also the S8 seems to push the low light exposures and heavily sharpen everything. The audio from the S8 seems to be better throughout. One feature that may push you over to the Sony side for good is the amazing 960fps video, which the S8 cannot compete, I only wish this was included in their mirrorless systems. Personally I like the S8 images and you can't go wrong with either phone. Owning an S8 I am envious of the stabilisation and the high frame rate video :(

    S8 FTW! Audio definitely better on S8 and low light..front camera could go either way when in comes to pics. XZS was slightly better for front facing pics (sometimes) rear pics was neck and neck! so that would be also preference. rear video was clearly better on s8 could see more at night and also audio was better and stabilization was better on S8 XZS seemed a little choppy while you were running, could really tell the difference when side by side!

    • @troy5568
      @troy5568 7 лет назад

      lance gilliam Fair points, but the inconsistent exposure of the S8 at night is so annoying to me - blacks will sometimes turn pure black then suddenly go back to being grayish again especially at the very last test, but I'm good with the amount of detail it can pull out in the dark, though XZs looks cleaner and more realistic. 1080p test was a closer fighht than 4K test at night on both.
      Regardless, even if I choose the XZs, the S8 would remain an excellent camera shooter and indeed is one of the best today

    At 1:02 XZs has better stabilization, but heavily overexposed the background.
    At 1:40 S8 has the weird chopping and frame drop. Also, zoomed in video is grainier.
    At 3:18 XZs sacrifices sharpness for stability.
    At 4:11 S8 has better dynamic range
    Low light photo and video: S8 destroys XZs

    Would have to say the S8, most flagship smartphones can take nice photos in good light. Deciding between them is just dependent of personal preference and situation-based performance. Most of the time i still prefer the S8's output but obviously it depends on the shot. XZS breaks down completely in low light, that's the deciding factor for me.
