One fairly minor detail here is that the city where this movie is set is the city I was born and raised in -- and I have never in my life EVER heard an actor get the accent right. But Toni Collette NAILS it completely. She got every single detail, every vowel, every tone contour. She is magical.

Toni Collete (who plays the kids mom) is one of the most incredibly underrated actresses in history. You reminded me when you said you reacted to that scene in the car so strongly. What made the twist so ingenious was that it was not a "trick" ending...it right before our eyes the entire time. The director made clever and effective use of the presumptions movie audiences have been trained to make about what we see on the screen.

    • @peterpike
      @peterpike 2 года назад +18

Yes, that and the fact that even without the twist it's a damn good movie. Other movies that try hard but suck except for the twist, you can't watch it again. This movie is complete and solid even without the twist, and the twist isn't just icing on the cake, it's another cake on the first cake with extra icing on top of that.

@@peterpike that's so true, and that's why I think shyamalan's other movies have not done nearly as well. His other movies have relied too much on the twists. This movie would still be a fantastic movie even if they omitted the twist at the end.

I have never seen another movie with such a clever twist, one that's right in front of you but you can't see until the end. On top of the twist, this movie has a really strong and powerful message about love and communication, which others movies don't.

The dark haired psychiatric doctor was, in fact, the movie's writer AND director, M. Night Shyamalan who, like Alfred Hitchcock, always writes himself in the film in some sort of cameo. The movie opened on his 29th birthday, Aug 6th, 1999.
Another thing, and I didn't pick up on this the 1st time I saw it (at the theater), he gives you hints about when something is going to happen. For instance, every time a ghost is going to appear, something red will be featured prominently in the foreground, like a red door knob, a bright red sweater, red balloon, red ball, etc. Another tell is that it always get scold whenever a ghost enters the area. You see all the characters react to it throughout the movie.
The Sixth Sense, even when watching this reaction video, like you, still brings tears to MY eyes when the mom (Toni Collette) breaks down and starts to cry in the car, and when Bruce figures out that he's been dead the whole time ... wow, just wow !!!
    Great reaction, man.

Now, as an adult with kids, I have a completely different view on it. I can't help but see this from the mother's point of view; how overwhelmed and worried sick she must be. The emotional car scene never really hit home before. Now I cry my eyes out every time. Even though this movie has always been highly regarded, I STILL feel like it is underrated. Bravo

It's not a special power, it's a skill that can be learned and practiced. Some people are born with it already "active" and others just need training. After some months of dating my now wife she confessed to me that she had this skill. I won't lie to you, some times it's scary, mostly when you get visited during the night out of the blue, but it is what it is. Since I was a kid I felt attracted to this kind of things and for me to be able to know someone like her was like winning the lottery.

One thing that I didn't pick up on for a long time and a few viewings, was when Cole first sees malcom when he comes out of his house and malcom is sitting on the bench, and then is following him, Cole runs from him and tries to hide in the church. He even puts up his soldiers to try to defend against him.
He is scared of him at first like all of the dead people, but Malcom wins his trust.

He made some very good films which was not good for his image and probably didn't recieved very much money.
His healt remember anyone can have reals problems.
I think , he knew he had a problem many many years before we know it and decided to be on films he could have made later.
Don't care about what he did a little after 2000, for me the problem was already here and he knew it since some years.

It's incredible that M Night Shyamalan gets stick for a few odd choices in direction, when he made this, Unbreakable, Signs, yes The Village! And more recently The Visit, Spilt, Glass.. he might go off track sometimes, but you never forget the movie!

The Sixth Sense has such a compelling visual design too. If you watch it again notice how the color red is used I'm many scenes that gears the audience toward a sense of warnings: red balloon , red door, read doorknob...

I'd like to suggest two movies starring Humphrey Bogart and directed by John Huston:
    - Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)
    - The African Queen (1952), co-starring Katherine Hepburn

Hi George, a movie I think you should check out is "Ordinary People". I won't tell you what it's about but the performances in the film are so realistic and moving, I think you will appreciate it. It won an Oscar for best film in 1981. Great reaction to this movie!!

Seeing this move in the theater was one of those experiences that you cannot replicate. It's one thing to watch it alone at home, but but being in a crowd when we all got hit with that ending was indescribable.

I saw this movie in the theaters and when the twist came everyone including me were shocked about it. This is the movie that made M.Night on the map so to speak, other good movies of his are Unbrakable and Signs all with amazing twists and hints throughout the movie.
Seeing ghosts isn't exactly a special power it happens when one is a Medium or when someone has a near death expirience so they are close to the other side so to speak. Ghosts are not things to be scared of and they can not pysically harm the living but there are the darker ones that can be dangerous.
This movie is pretty accurent on what happens when they show up exept for the fact that it doesn't have to be cold when they show themselves. Lost souls are those who only want to be heard so that they can move on and yes most of them just relive the moments leading up to their deaths so they don't know they are dead.

The Deer Hunter is an absolute epic movie not to be missed, brilliant story and top class cast including Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep and Christopher Walken. More great movies starring De Niro are Casino, Goodfellas. Cape Fear and Heat. And yes George, movies and music are a great way to 'lose yourself' for a while. We're all thinking of you and Patrick.
