I was 19 years old in 1973 when my buddy and I went to see this film. We had to stand in a line that wrapped around the movie theater 3 times - no exaggeration! We had never heard of an exorcist (and I'm Catholic) and had no idea what we were about to experience. After the movie I had to drive my buddy home and he lived way out in the country on a dead-end road. On my way home I was scared stiff and ran from my car into my parents house. Didn't sleep a wink that night. The good old days!

This is not only one of the best horror movies of all time, it is one of the best movies period. It came on like a nuclear bomb when it was first released in 1973. By the way, note that you watched the 2000 re-edit which restored some scenes that the writer was upset were originally not used. It also restored the Spider-walk sequence that was originally not used because they could not hide the wires that helped guide the contortionist doubling for Linda Blair down the stairs. In 2000, it was a simple matter to digitally erase the wires.

But always present somewhere in the back of my mind were the questions raised by this film which is both heinously profane and spiritually profound at the same time. It is basically correct that she played it all the way through, with the exception of a few shots here and there where they used an adult double named Eileen Deitz. She was used for the over the shoulder scenes of striking the doctor, when she lifted her nightgown calling on the doctors to "have" her. Of course the double was used for the shots of her grabbing the psychiatrist's crotch and the cross going between the legs. She was also fitted with the very uncomfortable vomit rigging which essentially hid tubes on the side of the face with makeup which led to a recessed nozzle in the mouth. The first shot of the vomit was an optical shot with Linda Blair though, the cut back shot was Deitz. And then it is Deitz (her longest moment in the movie) who is oozing vomit onto the priest's sash. Deitz was also the Captain Howdy face that was flashed through the film. It was actually a test possession makeup that they thought was interesting, but not "organic" looking. So, they flashed the face in places in the movie.

That was a good question about the Greek writing on the medallion. You asked that during the scene at Father Karras' mother's apartment. I thought maybe you were making a connection there. You were partly right; there is a connection, but the medallion's writing wasn't Greek. It's actually Latin, Sancte Joseph Ora Pro Nobis, Saint Joseph Pray for Us. What's strange is that it is in the dig site in the first place. It is not in the movie, but Father Merrin had battled this particular demon before and cast it out. I believe that the items found at the dig that caught Father Merrin's attention, the St. Joseph medallion and the clay figure of the demon head were a warning to Father Merrin that the demon was ready to battle again and had found its next victim(s). Father Karras wears a different medallion around his neck, but it is similar to the St. Joseph one found in Iraq. The demon head is similar to the sculptures that Regan creates along with her drawing in the basement. Father Merrin knew as soon as he saw the demon head that he must return to the U.S. and prepare to face this demon again.

    1. I was 13 when I saw this in the theater with friends. What rating system they had at the time wasn't really followed. By word of mouth I was aware of the vomiting, head spin and language but what freaked me the most were the demon flashes.
    2. When the doctor is looking at Regan's skull x-ray and says, "Nothing in there" I always 🤣
    3. The spider walk down the stairs was NOT in the original release.
    4. The loud banging with the medical equipment is for our benefit.
    5. Father Merrin and the demon had a previous encounter where he almost killed the father. Merin doesn't acknowledge the receipt of the note and tells Karras there's no need for analysis.
    6. The demon doesn't kill Merrin. From the beginning we know he has a heart problem most likely brought on by the previous encounter.
    7. Karras doesn't kill the demon. He does manage to draw it out of her and sacrificed himself for her.
    8. Karras is confessing because of his lack faith.😇

Couple of things first. I haven't watched many of the reactions because, first, they never show enough of the movie for you to know what they are reacting to. Second, the ratio of the film and the reactor is usually 50 to 20%, and the film is the 20% and you have to squint to see what their talking about. But the reactors faces are huge, nothing but pure ego!!! And also the reactors will go off subject and start talking about personal events or beliefs, instead of a constant narrative of the movie and how it affected you watching it. This was the best reaction I've seen. You showed the big screen of the movie, I knew what you were reacting to, you stayed on point.I wish the other reactors would read this and take note. Looking forward to your future reactions.

EXCELLENT review/reactions. Thank you for letting us join you!! I really enjoyed watching this and “Alien” with you! As other folks may already know, (I have read that) Actress Eileen Dietz was Linda’s “double”, and performed the more “difficult” scenes. The split-second shots of the demon were Eileen, and the “spider-crawl” was performed by stunt-woman Ann Miles.
There are some amazing videos on RUclips regarding the “behind the scenes” activities. One video is the testing of the the 360* turn of Regan’s head. They had mechanical problems with it not turning completely around. Another video is “out-takes” of the spider-crawl, and of Regan crawling on the floor chasing her Mom and Sharon, with her tongue flicking like a lizard. Another video is the detailed lighting test for the exorcism scene. Stand-ins for Merren, Damien, Regan. An incredible movie, Cast, and everything about it.

I was only 9 years old at the time , and I remember even the TV and radio ads scared me! And if you ever are in DC, the creepy stairs where Burk and Father Karris died are still there and are officially known as The Exorcist Stairs. The house used for exterior shots is also still there, but a lot smaller in real life. They built a whole other faux section onto the house so Reagan’s bedroom window would be over the stairs. Georgetown university also hasn’t changed much and many of the scenes that were shot on campus still look the same.

They used a double for Linda Blair for the graphic scenes. Her possessed voice was also dubbed by Mercedes McCambridge. The book and movie was based on a real life exorcism that took place in St. Louis, MO in 1949. Jesuit priests from St. Louis University performed the exorcism. The real life younger priest was Fr. Walter Halloran. A friend of mine attended SLUH in 1972. Fr. Halloran was pointed out to my friend by another priest. "That's the guy who had his nose broken by a kid possessed by the devil." My friend didn't understand what the priest was talking about until the movie came out a year later. Most Catholics had never heard of an exorcism before the movie.

Your reactions were phenomenal! Here's a little info FYI: Max von Sydow, who played Father Merrin, was in his early 40s when he played this role! Talk about acting... You watched the director's cut, which I prefer over the original because the director's cut was more clear. Ellen Burstyn, who played Chris McNeil (the mother) was badly injured during the filming of the "crucifixion" scene. The director had wires attached to her back, so when Regan slapped her, it would appear that Regan was very strong during her possession. On cue from the director, she was yanked across the room so hard, when she hit her back was injured! Also, if you can find the original novel, I suggest you read it and see how different the movie was. In the novel, the demon (Pazuzu) was relentless against Karl (McNeil's butler) and Father Karras. Karl was a survivor of the Holocaust and the demon exposed a side of Father Karras by suggesting he was a homosexual. I also suggest you view The Exorcist III - Legion. It's even creepier than the original!

Gosh, George, this film made a massive impact, as you can imagine, when it came out in 1973. I've read the book but I think I've only seen the film once, that was enough - it is one of the most terrifying films if not the most terrifying film! It's nearly 50 years old and yet it still has the power to shock and terrify you. Another film which has the power to shock, though not in the same way, is Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho from 1960. It's in black and white, but it certainly scared the shit out of me when I first saw it on the TV in the late 60s, I definitely recommend it! Another film I'd recommend featuring devil worship or possession, is Rosemary's Baby, a great film from 1968 directed by Roman Polanski. Thanks so much for your reaction, George, hope you didn't have too many nightmares after watching this! Take care now. 😊👍

i saw this movie in 1973 at the theatre when I was 11 years old. People got up, screamed and ran out. Some got up, vomited right in the isle. There were protesters outside walking with signs over graphic violence. The film was banned in many towns. We use to play with ouji boards back then. The only thing you have to do is tell the spirits to "GO" after your finished. Make your own ouji board. Draw the diagram on paper and get a very light glass. Asked questions and the glass will move and spirits will provide correct answers. Try it. Movie based on a true incident in 1949. The possessed was a boy. The Vatican has sealed the record so not much more is known.
The film affected some of my friends, not me. Guess I got strong will. Your reaction video was good. Much better than many other videos Ive seen recently. i give you a LIKE.

When you said "Merrin has already defeated the demon", CORRECT! The demon used Regan and Karris in getting a rematch with Merrin, round 2...of the demon finally defeating Merrin. Karris's faith was restored through it all...the demon wanted to kill Regan too, but once Karris took possession, he knew it (his hands reaching out to strangle Regan), but he fought it long enough to sacrifice himself...the moment his face returned to normal. That Karris was still alive is significant (his fingers moving), as the other priest could administer 'last rights', which absolved Karris of his sins, even the one he just committed of suicide. A HIGHLY intelligent reaction, to a movie of which it's complexities get lost on A LOT of ppl. Bravo, Gorgeous.

But if you look at the source material you'll see that William Peter Blatty was really writing a king of "supernatural, theological noir" book.

Linda Blair (who played the possessed girl Regan) did have a stuntwoman in the film. Her name was Ann Miles. Even in 1973, there were "things" that a young girl could not portray in a film, such as the actual crucifix stabbing of the body....not the screen shots of her face.....but the actual body stabbing. Watch carefully and you'll see those are two different shots cut very quickly together in just a few seconds. Also, the inverted "spider" scene coming down the steps is also performed by stuntwoman Ann Miles, with blood-like fluid coming out of her mouth......or so I read.
I also agree with the reviewer that Psycho (1960) and Rosemary's Baby (1968) and I'll also add The Omen (1976) are top tier disturbing movies that take your mind on a thrill ride.....movies that you simply do not forget.

I also learned that Eileen Deitz did the other scenes where it was deemed too harsh for a young Linda Blair to appear in. So, both names are correct as stunt doubles in The Exorcist. I'm sorry I didn't provide the full, accurate story before, but I'm happy I discovered what seems to be the complete story this time.

MAN, what a real and genuine reaction!! I loved watching your face the whole time. I hit that subscribe button so I can see more of your reactions
To answer your question, Linda Blair played Regan 99.8 percent of the time. When she came down the stairs in a back bend, it was a contortionist. There was one other shot she did not do, but the rest was her performance.
The scenes at the hospital were real. The director wanted real reactions from her, so he asked her mother to do them. Her mother said yes. So the needles sticking in her neck and arms were real. The blood squirting out of her neck was real The pressure the Doctor said she would feel was all real. And all of the x-rays were of Linda’s brain.
I have TONS more trivia when you want it! Thanks for such a great time!
