This movie's twist is probably the greatest plot bomb in cinematic history. You never see it coming until the end, and it's amazingly written. There's a reason this movie is so iconic and the twist is a huge part of it. The most heartbreaking part is that Bruce Willis can no longer act because of frontotemporal dimentia which heavily affects his motor and communication skills. My heart goes out to him and his family.

Out loud in theatre, "Oooooh fuuuuuu...." as it hit me what happened. In a film of amazing performances, my favorite is Kyra's dad. A moment to pay respects to Bruce Willis. What he's going through no one should have to. He had been trying to work through progressing aphasia for years. They were tailoring his roles and schedules to minimize the demands of filming and eventually just became too obvious and overwhelming. Only for it to lead to a diagnosis of FTD (Frtontotemporal Degeneration). Thoughts go out to his whole family. It reminds me of Christopher Reeve, the 1978 Superman, being paralyzed in a horseriding accident. An indestructible hero crushed by abject mortality. Bruce Willis may not have been Superman, but he is our Everyman. I hope they unlock the key to curing dementia very soon.

If you go back and watch it again, that's why Cole is running when we first see him. Like all the others, Malcolm scares him. It's also why he says "I'm going to see you again, aren't I?" One of the best shots in the movie is Willis sitting across from Toni Collette's character. Your brain just fills in that they must have just been talking while waiting for Cole to come home.

    • @oliverbrownlow5615
      @oliverbrownlow5615 5 месяцев назад +7

Indeed -- one assumes that Malcolm and Cole's mom have been talking, and it appears that they have suddenly stopped talking when Cole arrives. And when Cole's mom says to him, "You've got an hour," it seems obvious that she is talking about the hour he will be spending in therapy with Malcolm.

Kyra's mother most probably suffered from "Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another" (FDIA), also known as "Munchausen syndrome by proxy".
It is a mental health disorder, in which a caregiver creates the appearance of - or even causes - health problems in another person, typically his or her child. This may include injuring the child or altering test samples. The caregiver then presents the person as being sick or injured. Permanent injury or death of the victim may occur as a result of their caregiver having the disorder.
Kyra's mother's need for attention was pathological. She may or may not have meant to kill Kyra, as keeping attention on herself was the goal. She then started making her younger daughter ill, to keep the attention coming. The mother also wore bright red to her daughter's wake, to attract attention to herself.

Wonderful reaction ladies! One of the best plot twists I've ever seen, and it took me completely by surprise the first time I saw it. But as much as I tear up watching this, watching you two crying made me cry even more. Sending hugs to help with the trauma!
All three of the lead characters were absolutely amazing. Haley Joel Osmet was scary good as Cole. It was so easy to believe that he was actually experiencing everything that was happening to Cole because he acted the role so amazingly well. Toni Collette was absolutely top notch as Cole's mom. She was absolutely heart and soul invested in her role and she played it brilliantly. And Bruce Willis was absolutely great as Malcolm. None of them felt like they were acting. They all seemed to be living their 'real' lives. Stellar performances.
And kudos as well to M Night Shyamalan who created a perfect storm of a movie with absolutely stellar writing and direction, plus a cameo as the emergency room doctor who had examined Cole.
And I want to say that my favorite secondary character who doesn't get enough credit is Cole's teacher. Even though Cole told his secret and embarrassed him by making him stutter in class, the teacher still chose him to play the role of Arthur in the play at the end, relegating Tommy Thomasino to being the village idiot. 😀 I really think that the teacher, having stuttered and been made fun of when he was in school, understood how Cole felt and tried to put him in a position to feel better about himself and to be included and a part of the rest of the class, like when they all fell down and were laughing and having fun together after carrying King Arthur on their shoulders at the end of the play. I loved that the teacher did all he could to give Cole that experience. 🙂

9:14 his wife doesn't respond, doesn't look at him, pays the tab herself and even when she says "Happy Anniversary" she does so looking to the side.
10:30 this is where the kid's mom first saw somethin is different but she didn't want to accept it or even consider the notion that her kid is actually talking to ghosts/spirits.
11:18 first time he doesn't confront his supposed "rival" for his wife's attention.

18:59 you kinda expect him to say it but when he does, it still gives you the chills.
19:28 this line is incredibly important - "They don't know they're dead"
19:49 looking back at this moment - can you imagine how much this kid already trusts this random ghost, who has been trying to help him? Asking him to stay next to his bed until he falls asleep.
23:27 this is another very important line - "it gets cold"
25:05 this scene, showing us how the mother has flaws, she's human
25:50 and here, she shows just what a great mom she is - they fought before, minutes away, and she still allows him to stay with her in bed when she sees how scared he is.
27:32 second time he doesn't confront his wife, or his "rival"
29:34 they finally figured it out, both of them. Such a relief, when you see that exchange between them.
30:15 the third time he doesn't confront his "rival"
33:08 this was a bit too jumpscary but we have to give it to them, it stayed in theme with the previous ghost encounters. Just because the kid finally understands what he has to do, that doesn't make the ghosts any less scary.
36:00 what a heartfelt idea from the kid and such a heartbreaking realization right after - "I'm not gonna see you again, am I?"
37:00 this is probably one of the best parts about this movie - Cole finally confides in his mother and convinces her that he can actually see and communicate with ghosts.
39:00 no matter how many times you'll see this scene, it will always hit like a truck. The first time you're too shocked to process it but after you watch it a second time, it will hurt more and more.
Thank you for the beautiful commentary and the emotional reaction ❤

Everyone talks about the plot twist, and for good reason, but IMO what makes this movie great is its focus on characters. Even knowing the reveal, the characters are so good that they make the movie worth revisiting. When I search for Sixth Sense clips on the internet, its usually not the twist I end up watching. The scenes where Cole opens up to his mother, Cole is talking to the dead girl's sister, Malcolm says goodbye, etc. are the ones that I tend to gravitate toward.
IMO Shyamalan's golden trilogy is this, Unbreakable, and Signs for this very reason. They seem far more character-focused than anything I've seen from him since (though admittedly, I haven't seen anything recent).

It is a hint about the writing process. The penny has to be in one hand the whole time, but tell the story so that from the audience's perspective they think something else is happening entirely.

I felt for Vincent even before everything was explained because of that actor’s performance. It’s easy to say therapy “doesn’t work out for everyone” but imagine being the person it didn’t work out for. And imagine the therapist who didn’t help you at all to be praised as a hero who saved children. Now that we know what Vincent went through, hopefully you feel for him by the end.

Cole was terrified of Malcom at first, like all the other ghosts, but he knew Malcom was a good guy when he saw that he was able to come into the church. Anna could not get over Malcom's death because he was still there! "Everything will be different in the morning". There are so many little things....great movie!

Very mysteriously creepy yet hauntingly sweet movie as well. CLUE!: Every scene when the color RED is a hint that there is a ghost near or about to appear also when you see cold air from the breath. AS his first feature, this became the signature style of the Director and his absolute best compared to the rest to follow. The twist is well hidden yet it makes total "sense" when revealed. You need a strong 'sixth sense' to catch it! LOL

Shyamalan really did a good job with this movie, I'm fairly certain this is the movie that put him on the map in Hollywood. He struck such a nice balance of suspense, horror, romance, and tragedy. With one of the greatest, if not the best twist in movie history.
It's been parodied more times than you can count, truly one of the great movies to come out of the 90's.

Love the twist but if you pay attention to the signs you can figure it out. I was shocked by it and personally this is M.Night's best movie also M.Night himself was the doctor at the hospital that Cole's mother talked to. The scene in the car when Cole tells his mother the truth gets me everuytime and I am not one to cry in movies so that is saying a lot. As someone who saw ghosts from the age of 5 until I was 9 years old I can tell you that this movie is the closest thing to how it really happens when one sees ghosts but in my exparience the room doesn't get cold or anything like that and yes listening to their stories helps them move on but that is a lesson I had to learn on my own despite the fear I felt when seeing them. Sadly now I only sense them when they are around which makes it worse because when they are angry I don't know where they are in the room. Grate reaction girls and glad you liked the movie.
