Oh this movie. You know the beginning of this movie is sad but the scene that makes me tear up the most is where he’s reading the adventure book and reads “thanks for all the memories now go have an adventure of your own” 😭
Yes, it's the real emotional climax of the movie. Also, if you look closely at the scene with Ellie in the hospital you will see a tape dispenser and scissors on the nightstand - just what she might have used for adding those "Stuff I'm going to do" pages, just before passing the book on to Carl.
You may not have caught it, but Ellie placed those photos into the book while she was in the hospital (there was a scissor and tape on the table next to her hospital bed). She knew Carl would need encouragement to move on without her.
My wife and I watched this film for the 1st time just after we'd had a miscarriage in an effort to cheer ourselves up. Little did we know that at the start of the movie the characters go through the exact same thing. It was a moment neither of us will forget. The pain was unbelievable when we saw that scene. We managed to stick with it and watch it all the way though though and we really enjoyed it. Its one of those movies that reflects the real pain life can throw at you but also the joy of the adventures that await you afterwards.
I'm sorry you had to go through that. I've never tried to be a parent, but my mother had a lot of miscarriages before my older sister was born. I talked a lot with her about the experiences she had. It's a horrible thing. That said, this movie is baller, and I bawled my eyes out when watching it.
Same thing happened with my wife and I. We both cried for several minutes remembering our little one. A year and a half later, we have a healthy three month old baby boy. That scene still hits so hard.
we saw this in the theater and sat next to a family of four, two kids. when the scene pops up where ellie loses the baby, the mom starts sobbing and i hear one of the kids go "daddy why is mommy crying like that"
Bob Petetson, the co-director and the voices for Dug and Alpha, worked as a camp counselor in the 80's and a kid said to him "I just met you and I love you!" which inspired Dug's line.
True. Other breeds that give off the same energy: pitbulls (no, I'm serious), labradors, and bullmastiffs. Worked at a grooming salon for 7 years, so I've made the rounds.
Before Up came out, I never thought Pixar would top the When She Loved Me sequence in Toy Story 2. I can't believe they managed to perfectly capture true love in minutes and the scene where he finds the book shatters me. For me, Up is Pixar's magnum opus.
The beginning of the movie always rips my heart out, folds it into an origami swan, then sends it down the garbage disposal. It’s so fucked in the most wholesome way
The first 10 minutes of this movie is the greatest romance ever depicted on the screen...and then you get your heart ripped out. I saw this in the theater and people were sobbing.
There are 2 parts that really break your heart in this movie. First one, the first 10 minutes. Secondly, when he going through the adventure book and realizes that Ellie was living her adventure with him already and now wants him to begin his.
28:45 A genuine loving and caring response, to a dog being thrown off a cliff. Even though it was a cartoon dog... It's very telling of your compassionate personality. 🥰
The opening sequence of their life is emotional of course but the one scene that crushes me every time is actually at the end when Russell is alone at his badge ceremony and before he has to explain why nobody is there to pin his new badge on, Carl shows up and so lovingly and sincerely awards him the Ellie badge, his most cherished item.😢
Up's opening scenes of telling you Carl and Ellie's entire life story is so heart-warming, and so soul-crushing, that it is amazing to think that they were able to tell it with ZERO dialog. Just world-wide recognizable images of relationships at different stages, music cues that both guide and shift the tone, and that's all you need. Storytelling 101.... Simply show, don't tell, and the audience will understand it. BUT, it is also so important to go through because it actually explains where Carl's "mind and heart" are when the actual "main story" kicks in. And it places you (the viewer) in a position to see BOTH where his determination is his best quality, AND his focus on one thing can be his WORST quality. Simply by going through the opening, Karl himself because a FULLY ROUNDED character that has his good parts, his bad parts, his needs, wants, desires AND room for growth as a person so fully mapped out that he becomes the "grandfather" type figure you WANT to have at your side for anything from just getting ice cream to going out on an adventure in the wild.
This movie does a fantastic job not just of hitting you in the feels from start to finish but it's also one of the best movies to serve as an example for setup and payoff: 1. Muntz's obsession gets introduced at the very start of the movie and it proves to be his undoing. 2. Carl gets his membership badge from Ellie and he obviously considers it an incredibly precious thing - he gives it to Russell in the end, the highest honor he could bestow upon him. 3. Ellie's adventure book gets introduced at the start, with plenty of pages left blank for all the adventures she will have - we see it filled up towards the end, by Ellie herself, and the best part is she filled it with memories of her life together with Carl, not her childhood adventures in a faraway land. 4. Carl and Ellie's house, which we've seen just how much it means to Carl from the very start - he finally gives up on it to save his newfound family: Russell, Kevin and Dug. It's satisfying to see how Carl could let go of those parts of his past that held him down, as opposed to his childhood hero, Muntz, who died consumed by his obsession and the cruel things he did in pursuit of it. Ellie's adventure book helping Carl to rediscover a reason for living was so heartwarming, she kept helping him even from beyond the grave. Thank you for this beautiful, emotional reaction ❤
And, of course, Russell says he has to help Carl "cross SOMETHING" to get his Assisting the Elderly badge. In the end, by helping Carl get his house to Paradise Falls, he helps him cross his heart.
@@stevenhenry9605 Carl did not need Russell's help, but the latter did not want to understand this, for which he later paid. This will teach him a lesson in humility(It’s good that Carl was humble, so he doesn’t ask anyone for anything), that if people told him they didn't need his help and weren't going to listen to him, then so be it. And don't care what he thinks about it
33:36 Seeing that photo reminds me of my grandfather. He had this small space in front of his house in the village. It was like a place of meaning to him. Whenever I went to visit Mexico, I always catch him sitting in his spot all the time with his dogs, with his faraway look in his eyes. Ever since he died, I made it my place of solace.
I seriously rate any romantic movie on that first 10 minutes. Because if you spend 2 hours... or at times more... and cannot beat that... I will not be rewatching.
This is one of my favourite animations of all time. It's so mature and deep that you can't find any one like this. There are a lot of different themes which are depicted beautifully such as, adventure, oldness, boyhood, true love, idolization, escapism, nature, endangered animals, ... wrapped in a funny and adventurous piece of work with lavish beauty.
Having just turned 65 this movie means more than it did before. My last girlfriend lost her battle with cancer 7 years ago. I no longer do anything or go anywhere. Time is approaching to just let go. Thanks for such a great reaction to this film. Take care.
FYI in English, a "Snipe Hunt" is a prank played on someone to trick them to hunt for a "Snipe", a bird that does not exist. It is also known as a wild-goose chase. Carl plays the prank on unsuspecting Russell and it's a key part of the plot.
first time seeing Laura in one of your video reactions. She is so beautiful. And she looked even better when she was crying during the movie. great video reaction.
I learned about a Snipe hunt when I was a kid. Went to a camp and they tricked so many kids into having pillowcases, making calls and using flashlights. A Snipe is a real bird, but it's used as a trick to keep kids busy as you basically said :P
Young Ellie is voiced by director Pete Docter's daughter Ellie. She along with her brother Nick did kid screams for Monsters, Inc. and she was the inspiration for Riley in Inside Out, Docter's next movie.
I remember watching this in the movie theater..... They did an incredible job telling a story in the first what 7 to 10 minutes everybody was crying in the theater I was a blubbering mess
The commercials for this movie showed Mr. Frederickson as a lonely old man. So when the film introduced his wife as I child I started crying immediately, in the isle seat of a flight to Vegas... I cried through the entire opening. I cried typing this... This is also my favorite animated movie ever, of all time. Second is Wall-E, third is How To Train Your Dragon.
I love that Magy understood how Carl’s laser-focused determination to bring his house atop Paradise Falls is kinda similar to Charles’ obsession with capturing the bird.
The beginning of this Movie hides so many messages. 1. There’s always someone for everyone does not matter how quiet or talkative you are. 2. You can find that person in the most random ways ever. 3. Life is driven by ambitions, goals and dreams. 4. It is possible to be happy with 9-5 or (regular jobs). 5. But He made her feel better letting her now that there are other ways to achieve happiness and he will be there no matter what. 6. Time waits for NOBODY. If there is something you want to do, better set out and do it ASAP bc if you just put it back you will find yourself having lived your whole life without making your dream come true. And you start forgetting about it little by little until it is simply too late…. This Intro is special in so many ways and it’s a montage of pure GENIUS. One of the greatest movies ever
So many memories came out today, I watched UP when I was a kid I've cried to much with this love your reactions girls always came from the hearth that's why I watch your channel 🥰
Whenever a reactor starts watching Up they usually feel good eat the first 8 minutes or so. those of us that know the movie always think to ourselves “they don’t know what’s about to happen”. 2 minutes later the crying starts.
Even people who doesn't cry easily still get shaken by this movie, I know you two gonna cry so many times😂 Such a good heart-warming cry near the end though
a woman and a man building a life together.. a beautiful story as old as time itself. with the modern world and social media and material things, we forget the value of proper real relationships up is devastatingly emotionally real. a genius piece of animation
If you guys are ever in the San Francisco Bay Area you can actually visit and eat at Fenton's the ice cream place at the end. It looks different but it's the actual place the animation was based on.
A pop culture classic that is animated in which I believe that you'll enjoy is called The Last Unicorn 1982, that is based from the book The Last Unicorn. A film I highly recommend as it has the elements that makes any story amazing that are Adventure, Fantasy and Horror but not too much, just enough to give the element of suspense. As for the reaction, it gives such nostalgia when my folks used to take my and my sisters or other family members to Disney Paris or going around different Parts of Europe when we'd go travelling in the camper van/motorhome and Stopping during the evenings to relax, have food with a film to watch together. Yeah... Good and quite nostalgic memories.
When we are in childhood we enjoy animated movies. When we grow up, we also enjoy them, but we learn their meanings. I love UP, childhood memory without a doubt! ❤️❤️
This is another movie I had never seen until I saw you did a reaction to it so I got the film & watched it first special so that I could watch this reaction. I loved the film & your reactions. 🥰
My dog died recently and it made me appreciate life even more and then I came upon the movie up after not seeing it in like 10 years and I didn’t know how sad that beginning was fr,
Thanks Magy and Laura for reacting to my favourite Pixar movie. I love Carl and Ellie's realistic life story. Russell, Kevin and my favourite Dug make the movie even more epic. Such a heartfelt, heartbreaking story especially Ellie secretly filling in the adventure book. "Thanks for the adventure, now go have a new one!" ❤❤❤
My name is Kevin, and it was so cool to hear you both saying my name in the movie....but I'm not a girl haha🤭 Thanks for the fun reaction. Keep smiling 👍🙂
This spawned one of the best dad jokes. Rick Ainsley is notoriously stingy with his animated movie collection. No matter how much you beg him to let you borrow it, he's never gonna give you "Up."
Such a beautiful movie. One of my favorites. I would strongly suggest another Disney animation called "Encanto". Yes, you'll cry, but it's worth watching. I think you both would love it. Thanks for another great reaction.
Disney Pixar up (2009) is gotta be one of the My favorioute and the Best Disney Pixar animation ever Made to this company Disney Pixar, the Paradise falls is baced to the el salto angel or angel falls from Venezuela the place then i Ever living forever in My life, and the hold story about carl and ellie being together like a couple is kinda like a couple in real life and soo sad and emotional rollercoaster and perfect Masterpiece animation of a great emotional movie😢.
Pixar Animation Studios is responsible for Up and all the creative genius behind so many other animated features that are shown as 'Disney/Pixar'.Disneys' involvement? They bought Pixar, put their name first on the credits,(to take the credit)and collect the money.Apart from this,Disney has nothing to do with the story, the animations...any aspect of these movies..yet.Luckily we're spared soppy musical numbers every ten minutes in a Pixar film.
I cried too, but I had to watch certain parts in pauses, like I had to pause and play the movie in some parts just because I kept crying, but yeah, UP is a good movie, it tugs on your heart strings, its the only movie I’ve seen that makes me cry (the only movie that makes me cry so far at least)
Oh this movie. You know the beginning of this movie is sad but the scene that makes me tear up the most is where he’s reading the adventure book and reads “thanks for all the memories now go have an adventure of your own” 😭
I agree with you on that point when he reads the book and the line hits me hard.

It's kind of crazy how Ellie, who we never even hear speak as an adult, is one of the most beloved characters in animation. Genius.

Me:" Oh, you will."
Laura: "I'm not going to cry."

I’ve watched Up probably dozens of times and I never noticed that detail!! Thank you!

When I saw that scene, I was shocked. It was heartbreaking that Ellie wasn’t able to have a child. She and Carl would have been great parents.
Oh she felt that in her soul! I also feel bad for the kid not understanding then & dad trying to know what to say/not say in a theater.

The first time I saw this movie I was 19. Now I'm watching this movie again at 34 and I'm crying.
This is another movie I had never seen until I saw you did a reaction to it so I got the film & watched it first special so that I could watch this reaction. I loved the film & your reactions. 🥰
36:44 Hasta la vistaaa 😎🫡
Here are a few recommendations for animated movies.
RATATOUILLE,
THE IRON GIANT,
THE INCREDIBLES,
& SNOW WHITE AND SEVEN DWARVES.
Enjoy your journey.
Yeah that opening "life" scene is just downright incredible. The whole film just hits you in the feels
The only three certainties in life are death, taxes and crying in the first 15 minutes of the Up movie!
I saw this in the theater and after ten minutes you could hear people weeping.
Awesome reaction of my favorite Pixar movie!!!!😊😊😊😊😊
My name is Kevin, and it was so cool to hear you both saying my name in the movie....but I'm not a girl haha🤭
Thanks for the fun reaction. Keep smiling 👍🙂
The talking Doberman reminds me of David Hasselhoff in Click. 🤣🤣
This spawned one of the best dad jokes. Rick Ainsley is notoriously stingy with his animated movie collection. No matter how much you beg him to let you borrow it, he's never gonna give you "Up."
Anyone who watches the first 10 minutes of this movie and doesn't cry isn't a human.
You guys gotta watch the mini series “Dug days”. It’s hilarious. Plus, I never saw Laura cry so much before.
Thanks for the memories.
Your reaction to this movie was epic. You two are fun to watch.
If you aren’t too destroyed by the beginning of the movie, and you’re able to stick with it, this is an amazing film.
It was the greatest first 10min of a movie I've ever seen. I bawled my eyes out, and I was a 55yo man when I saw it.
