This should have been last years review. I believe Forbes had done thise benchmarks back before launch in 2014. The UI has been significantly updated, and you need to compare with other AAA releases from this current gen.
Just as a heads up, you can play any modern 2018 games on this system. Some will run at 60++ fps consistently, some you'll need to frame cap between 30 and 50.

I notice this is a new upload yet is already out of date as the Alpha upgraded its UI to the Hivemind UI some weeks ago... a massive improvement. You may want to edit!!
The R1 needs max ram and an SSD upgrade to function well. In 2020 it is great as a retro gamer for games up to Farcry 4 at max settings. If you are intrigued about the alpha, get the R2 instead, it has a better GPU and can use an external video card. I use a R1 like a console and am enjoying it, on Farcry 5 and Fallout 4 , it is on par performance wise with a PS4.

I added another 4gb stick of ram and this thing does surprisingly well. No problems in most games. Sure theyre not on the highest settings, but very good for what it is. I have it in my game room, along with my other consoles, and it works perfect for when I get the pc game itch
did you change the power settings to high? and did you notice that some games use too much ram and 4gb is not enough to run smoothly because of hdd smart cache. my games would dip to unplayable fps because of these two things.

I don't have a gaming pc yet and i think that the alpha would be a good start and I like the portability
stewart cox It is very comparable to a console but if you build one (Not hard at all to do. I'm 12 and I built one 2 months ago for my uncle) you're getting much more performance for around the same price. Even though a mini-itx case is a bit bigger than this, I still think it's a better deal all-around.

Can i play games with keyboard and mouse? I would like the precision of a key board and mouse when i play FPSs I played PC at a buddies house and i loved it to the precision of keyboard and mouse in FPSs to smooth gameplay for running a game at 60 fps. Anyway would this be nice to start gaming on PC? I want to play CS:GO, Overwatch, Gmod, TF2, CIV 6. Can i edit videos on this? What all can i upgrade in this Processor, Graphics Card, etc?
yes you can play games with a keyboard and mouse. CSGO 1080p plays at 100-150fps, overwatch low 1080p gets you 60fps, gmod lol old game 1080p max approx 130+fps, Tf2 basically the same as gmod, civ idk I don't own it. Yes you can edit videos on it, and the processor is upgrabeable and the graphics card is nonupgragable assuming you only get the R1.

Quite the Contrary, The GPU is soldered to the Motherboard making it unupgradable, However; You can run a full sized desktop GPU Externally on the R1. You'd have to remove the internal Wifi Card to free up the PCIE slot and then run a PCIE Extension to your external GPU. After you've done that, you can even dedicate the 860m to processing Physx while your external handles everything else. So say you get a new 1070, drop an i5 in there and upgrade the Ram to at least 8gb, you'll be running everything pretty much Ultra @ 1080p above 60fps. Now keep in mind that the PCIE slot inside the R1 is a x4 slot not a full x16 so you'll only get about 80% of the performance of whatever card you drop in there but it's fine because anything will run better than a 980m (a laptop GPU) compared to a modern desktop gpu, not to mention if you dedicate the 860m to Physx.
Personally I have an i7, 16gb of Ram and a Titan X running off of my Alpha and you can get creative making your own External GPU Enclosure. I used a .50 Cal Ammo can for portability and bad assery factor. Its not impossible, just have to be creative.

Great review. But i have questions. I am planning to purchase the i3 version of Alienware Alpha R2 but I am curious about its gpu which is the Radeon R9 M470X. i couldn't find any benchmark for this gpu. How is it? Is this better than the gpu (gtx 860m) of first Alienware Alpha? TIA.
I know this is late but get the I5 or I7 version, the I3 version does not have the graphics amp port for an external GPU
so this runs like a normal PC? will I be able to record Minecraft, CSGO, GTA, and my Xbox, as well as edit and upload and search the web.
You will 100% be able to do that if you upgrade the RAM to 8gb or above.

Yes 8 gigs of ram will make a huge difference. My friend upgraded to 8 on this exact model and it performs a lot better. He can run bo3 on it will decent settings and good FPS. It's not much for another 4gb stick of ram ($20) so I would go for it. You won't be disappointed. And to install the ram stick is quite simple. Look up a tutorial and find the right ram and you are set :) Hope this helps

Hi. Since the Black Friday is coming, I am planning to get a new desktop. Do you recommend me to get a this Alienware Alpha or a desktop. I will mainly use it for programming, daily work, and a little bit for game. I understand that desktop would be better, but it also cost more money. I just want to know is this thing works good for programming and daily work?
+Alex Xiao This thing works as a desktop, and is an insanely good deal on amazon right now. You can upgrade the cpu and ram which are both important for programming and daily work. Now I'm no genius, but the alpha is a good deal if you are on a budget.

Gabe Newell Im going to point out the alienware alpha i3 is $400 on amazon. You cannot build a PC, with windows, that will preform as well as the alpha and be the same formfactor for less than $400
Gabe Newell Windows 10 is free upgrade, not a free OS. And steam OS is mainly for gaming, which this guy is not looking for, and the i3 on amazon is $400.
Gabe Newell Why buy the x51 when you can build a way better PC at the same pricepoint. I know i'm arguing against what i said above, but the alpha on amazon is at a price point where you can't build it for a better price. The X51 on the other hand, is at least $700, and you can build a way better PC at that point. The X51 also has a tower that makes upgrades a lot harder.

nope the i3 is great. not many games use more than 2 cores and there's a lot of people who use an i3 with powerful GPUs.
+ATW Tech plus it has hyperthreading with 2 theoretical cores, effectively working as a quad core in many scenarios.

+Folded I have the i3 with 8gb ram. Seriously, it outperforms xbox one particularly in the antialiasing and frame rate deppartment. Unless you plan on running multiple demanding program simultaneously then just get the i3. There is very little graphical improvement between i3/5/7 due to all 3 versions being a low power system with the same graphics card. By all means upgrade to at least 8gb and you can decrease load times with SSD but processor is really only going to give noticeable gains with multitasking.
Just buy a 15 dollar ram card.

MARSHY BOY For editing, get the mac. The operating system is faster in general. This PC for more intense editing like 30 minute 4K renders. Mac in my opinion for editing.

ProhvokedFPS . How is he stupid ? You do need 8 gigs of ram as a result of GTA V being intensive. If you are judging the game based on the intro, then you are the dumb one. The intro doesn’t have nearly as much going on in the game world compared to the rest of the game. So after the intro the game stutters and is unplayable at 4 gigs of ram.
