I upgraded mine almost the same way. Same RAM, though from Crucial not Kingston, same SDD, and I upgraded to the i7 4765t cpu. I'm glad you mentioned the USB to HDMI converter. Any recommendations on a good cheap USB 3.0 hub?

So question, I'm a photographer and I'm looking to buy a desktop pc for editing purposes. I'm looking at the entry level alpha, without knowing a lot about pc and performance would this be a good choice. I only need it to run lightroom 5 and maybe upgrade to lightroom 6 along with photoshop. In addition everything I shoot with my DSLR (Canon 70D) is RAW files. An answer would be amazing!!
I have a few Alienware pc's. The Alpha i3, Alpha i7, and an Alienware 15 R2 i5 laptop. I bought some 2tb external hard drives for the Alphas and was thinking about making some performance upgrades. What do you think the cheapest upgrade to improve performance would be for the Alpha i3? And is it even worth it? I want it to be able to handle more things at once. Especially software that puts a lot of stress on the pc.

Was the cpu turbo boosting while running Cinebench? it scores slightly higher than my 3.5 ghz i5 4690k and if the 4790s scores higher than mine at 2.8 ghz, I'd feel ripped off.

You kind of made it sound like you're not even getting the full horsepower from it, so I think I'll try to play it safe. Maxed the ram already, but yeah dude I hear ya on needing the ssd!

you can use the exp gdc to upgrade gpu on alpha but it doesnt use full power of gpu, but I was still able to play The Witcher 3 at ultra settings with 35-45 fps with a RX 580
I use Kingston hyper X BEAST memory...its awesome, plus the name is cool

This is my first gaming pc, i got this when the xbox one came out as an attempt to start modding games i got the lowest end i3 it was over 500 when i got it and im seeing the higher end ones for half what i paid for mine it doesnt meet most of the requirements of most of the games i play but i cant complain too much
smcfadden1992 I got mine with the i7 and two tb and 8 go of ram. It meets almost all requirements of any game. Sometimes you have to download certain software to play certain games that's about it. If you upgrade it you'll won't regret it.
Ya, its a great little thing. I got mine on Amazon Prime Day in 2015 for either $330 or $350. Had 16gb ram and a ssd on hand from a laptop I wasn't using anymore. Later I upgraded the 4130t to a 4170 for ~$20 after I sold the 4130t (at 3.7GHz locked, the best single core performance outside of a 4790 if it hits its boost without hitting a power or thermal throttle). Still good these days as a htpc or if you are really space limited. Can still run most games on low settings or lower resolution.
My only issue with it now is that its been retired to a bedroom TV that is only 720p, so for games like GTAV, trying to find the right graphical settings where it doesn't hit a cpu bottleneck is harder. Its actually easier for my to dial in better fps at 1080 than 720 on this thing, haha.

Something else to consider, these days with people running there own small businesses/self employed, like yourself, some people rent desc space so they can have a separation between there work and home life. I think they're called Co-Working Spaces.
Something very small and portable like this might be a good alternative to a laptop. Witch might not be as flexible with the upgrades.

I do have trouble hearing so while I could understand MOST of the video, however, I especially couldn't hear the section where you listed the parts you upgraded the Alpha with, no matter how loud it got to the point where it started to hurt my ears, I still couldn't catch on. Foreversouth0 Well, first off, there's tons of fighting games on Steam. That and fighting games are usually not that demanding, so even the cheapest model with run these games just fine. I'm sure the i3 will handle Mortal Kombat X easily.
The reason why PC versions of fighting games are not in tournaments is because desktops are not as compact as consoles, but the Alienware Alpha addresses this issue.

I have an Alienware Alpha i5, base configuration, and I bought the Startech USB to HDMI adapter knowing it would work because Rich was using the same exact thing on his.
It doesn't work. I am pretty sure it's because I'm on Windows 10 and Rich was on Windows 8.1 for this video, but the support guy I have been talking to swears that he has never seen this issue before and that it works on Windows 10.
After installing the driver, whenever I plug in the adapter is just resets my entire computer. And it goes into a boot loop if I leave it on. The only way to fix it is to recover to a point before I installed the driver or to remove the adapter from my computer.
Does anyone have any idea what could possibly help this? I have tried reinstalling it, redownloading it, plugging it into USB 2.0 instead, using USB hubs, and so many other things. Also tried installing as admin and every compatibility mode.
Furthermore, when I use it on our super old family laptop, which is running Vista upgraded from XP (yeah that old), it works like a charm. This computer is almost dead, and it works perfectly. Through USB 2.0 nonetheless. That's why I've deduced it's a Windows 10 problem but you know, the tech guy swears that it isn't.
A Hybrid Drive would work as well. You get SSD like speeds with standard Hard Drive space.
can you use the alienware external gpu with this?
The reason they put a 5400 rpm drives is to reduce heat. Sadly like you said, they just are not fast enough.

I am currently a PS4 owner. However the Alienware Alpha intrigues me. Money is no object, and I would like to know if the i7 model is worth the investment, with necessary upgrades? I don't have time to build a PC from scratch, and I HATE the PS subscription fees, Lack of Backwards compatibility, etc. I already own an HD TV etc. But I enjoy gaming with friends in my living room. Is this possible with the Alienware Alpha? Like CoD split screen? Or MkX 2 player?
Why not just put an i5 4690k? It's not like you will run the i7 at full speed anyway.
With the startech adapter it wouldn't be uncommon to see degraded performance even in gaming ( not to mention its a laptop GPU used) but with any 3rd party display adapter Physx is automatically disabled, honestly i don't see the the point in units like these they have a market i suppose but for the price w/upgrades you can build a rockin gaming rig.

I have upgraded my Alienware Steam ASM100 (Alpha R1) from i3-4170T to i5-4460S and was great (and 16GB and SSD), saw higher FPS everywhere. And then to i7-4790S and I'm not sure that it was a great upgrade. Temps are really higher, almost all games are GPU limited with i5-4460S and cant see *any* fps upgrade with the i7-4790S. Maybe its great for apps that use 8 threads like OBS, but for gaming? I don't know. Maybe a Core i7-4790T would be better, lower temps, lot of cores, but I can't find any cheap anywhere. Current 3DMark Time Spy Score with i7-4790S wtihout any GPU OC: 1169
I have the alienwear with the i7 processor and it has the 1tb harddrive that runs at 7200 not the 5400 you said it has.
i have just a Sata drive in my laptop from years ago and it loads faster then a SSD my laptop turns on in 7seconds and opens anything in less then a second way less but my Sata3 takes 8times longer wtf

There's really no difference man. Just the steam machine will have steam os and u can just download steam os on Alienware alpha

I have had the alpha i7 for 3 months now, got it for 799, and looking back so far, it has been a very good purchase for me. I have been playing next gen games dying light, evil within, shadow of mordor, and a ton more that were on xbox 360, I have had barely any trouble with it. The only issue was with dying light, and I think the pc port wasn't that great. I know this because a lot of people are having problems.
As for the slow hard drive, I removed the Alpha UI. It's slow and it's clunky. The only slow part for the hard drive is pretty much only when you boot up the system. I have had no problems with choppiness or even starting the game. It might be 20 - 30 seconds when you start the higher end games such as this current gen. 10 -20 from last gen.

Arturo Rosales No, but there are videos of people doing it. Alienware also has a video of the i3 model doing it. With the latest drivers you should not have much of a problem playing it.

R2 Alpha Comes with SSD as an option. Might be more inexpensive to get an SSD second hand like yourself though.
