    I feel really bad for them. So many people backed them and everything seemed to have high hopes. Then right after out its released, everything came crashing down and they have not been able to get back up. All of their supporters gone in an instant. That has to feel terrible. I don't know what they did to deserve this.

    It's sad, but the people behind the Ouya screwed it up. The Ouya could have succeeded. The interest was there but they botched it by having a half-baked, uninspired and laggy GUI, not having nearly enough *good* cheap software on the thing that can't be had elsewhere already, and an unresponsive, buggy and cheap feeling controller. It also didn't help that the store consists of expensive downloads you could buy on other platforms, bedroom-developed shovelware by middle school kids that aren't even worth the price of "free", and retarded distraction apps that don't belong on a game console. There were a lot of things that should have been fixed, but overall the Ouya ecosystem feels half-assed, even now after several updates. What a waste of potential.

      Austin Mackert
      would have been better had it been running *either* a better version of Android (as-in, all the normal stuff works), or a more full-featured Linux distro (maybe with a nice shell on top of it), and was more friendly with being plugged into PC monitors or capture cards (vs requiring an actual TV).
      a lot of this stuff made it virtually unusable for the most part.
      actually much more enjoyable to develop software for the Raspberry Pi, IMHO. then one can write all their code in good old C and C++, with no need to deal with NDK and ADK funkiness.
      likewise goes for the rather mutilated versions of both the C and Java runtime libraries (though, Android in general isn't such a great platform for people who aren't really so keen on writing code in Java).
      like compiling stuff on the RPi is *slooow*, but at least the development environment isn't a mutilated half-broken mess.

      Austin Mackert Some of this is to be expected such as shitty apps. That is how a truly free market works. If you want a closed system with approvals in place, that's what the Nintendo and Sony consoles are for. Well, at least did. I guess all that shit will be available on their markets as well. Still, most of what you said nails the issue.

      ***** Darren Childs They recommend 5-10 Mbps for 720p 30fps and 30-50 Mbps for 60 1080 (which also needs wired.) Ive tried the 720p 30fps (wireless) and it works fine, and don't have great internet.

    • @Hobojo153
      @Hobojo153 9 лет назад

      Welcome to Hell It does, you need around 10Mbps for 720p 30fps (which can be wireless) and 30-50Mbps for 1080p 60fps (which must be wired.) You can also steam your own PC game to anywhere now which probably has the same requirements.

      Cherry Pauper steam machine prototype but kickstarter.
      it allowed people to mod it to play whatever old school game they wanted or homebrew games or pirate games. it also let you play android games.
      it had a slim exclusivity game list that got quickly ported to steam, xbox, playstation, and wii u E-Stores.
      a lot of people who looked into it, thought it was the shit, but that's the sad reality, it wasn't advertised as user-friendly enough to keep someone's interest.
      it marketed itself as a "android console" so people got the impression it played games you can already play on your phone, thus no one gave a shit about it and people who understood it, knew they could do what it does on a PC.
      Ouya is ded.

    I still have my Ouya, is the best thing EVER if you're into emulation, just this little set top box you can plug in to the tv and just have all your retro gaming stuff on there from Atari 2600, SNES and even some later consoles like the dreamcast, n64 and ps1 :)

    • @scottthewaterwarrior
      @scottthewaterwarrior 9 лет назад

      RubberDucky How much do emulated games cost? I've been thinking about getting into retro gaming and buying a Sega Genesis, but if I can get all the games I want on the Ouya it would probably just get that instead. What is the selection like? Most the Genesis games I want are rather obscure and not that popular.

    • @thatssomegoodpie
      @thatssomegoodpie 9 лет назад

      scottthewaterwarrior LoL, this is the best part about it, they are completely free. you will have to download the emulators from the Ouya store and most them are free, other cost like 2 bucks maybe. And after that you just go to a website like Coolrom.com and download all the retro goodness you want put them on a USB and just plug that bitch right into the Ouya and the emulators will recognize the roms just like that :)

    • @ToadsBloopers
      @ToadsBloopers 9 лет назад

      RubberDucky The only thing is most games have glitches. For example, Jet Moto 2124 has many glitches concerning floors and skies. Also, you can't run emulated PS1 games at 1080P, which a 400$ PC can do.

    The only people "excited" for this had no idea of what the players already have and what devs are about (you know, "cash").
    Nobody wants to develop for a new obscure low tech console when you can already have wet dreams (yet almost impossible to achieve due to lack of luck) of a "flappy bird success" on android / ios. Making a shitty game and getting huge cash out of it outweighs the free spirit of indie devs (who are just as greedy as anyone, really).
    And for emulators ? Come on. Any pc + xbox360 controller + hdmi can do it for the tv and if you want a portable gaming emulator, you can get yourself an old cracked psp that will run anything around and below the ps1 era.
    Don't get so naive from any shit announced on kikestarter.

  • @OutlawMantis
    @OutlawMantis 9 лет назад +1

    I use my Ouya all the time, but not for its intended purpose. It's a very low-power device (meaning small power bill) and I run XBMC (media centre software) on it, which allows me to access several terabytes of (legally obtained) films, TV show and anime. The Ouya plays all of my media with no quibbles. However, I can count the number of games I've played on the Ouya on my hands.
    Still, it's sad to think that those who bought the device as a game console may effectively be left with a paperweight. Think. If they go completely out of business their marketplace will shut down too. If the games (I'm not sure if they do) require Internet authentication they will stop working. It sounds like it'll end up a real fiasco. While it is possible to load software onto it with APK files, this requires a little bit of technical know-how that I don't think the majority of customers will have.

    People were giving them money and they were working on a console that took far too long to produce. By the time it was ready to go, it was already technologically obsolete. There were phones that could do everything the Ouya could, and there was no need for the thing to exist.
    They didn't think long term, and I think that was ultimately their biggest mistake.

    I swear, gamers make me embarrassed to be a gamer. Whoever thought "oh wow, an android console is going to be awesome, regardless of my tablet and phone doing the same exact thing" was a good investment (8.5 million dollars worth), they need to never do anything financial ever again except pay bills.

      samus1225 Except the idea is to play android games on a TV, it WAS good at the time until both Google and Amazon killed it by enabling the same thing a full year (if not more) after it came out.

      OUYA killed themselves by having their own Android based OS which resulted in a very delayed launch, which then left the console dated at launch. And the games had to be ported from Android to the OUYA instead of Android games just being released on the system like Android phones and tablets.

    I don't see the value of an android console when I can easily hook my phone to a controller and a TV and get the same experience without unneeded restrictions. My game library would consist of mostly emulators though lol. You know what I think we need? Someone needs to create a decent PC Console based off something like the raspberry pi. But with hardware capable of playing AAA games. THAT would sell. I'm sure someone will try it at some point. Just gotta get around the issue of re-compiling everything in ARM.

  • @Corristo89
    @Corristo89 9 лет назад +1

    For a little more you could buy a decent tablet with micro-HDMI, hook it up to your TV and use every app you wanted! Also apps like Netflix weren't available for the Ouya and had to be manually sideloaded. And the app stutters like hell, so the Ouya can't even be used as a simple streaming box for your TV. And if that's what you want, then Amazon (Fire TV and Fire TV Stick) and Google (Chromecast) have better products for less money.
    Basically the Ouya failed because it banked on a small niche market. Those who already owned consoles, PCs, good smartphones and tablets didn't really need it in the first place, since all those devices could do what the Ouya did.

    I remember first hearing about the Ouya and, after seeing the unit's shape, it got me thinking about the mock commercial for the joke console called the iBox, basically mocking Apple's line of products at the time. I liked the ideas that went into producing such a console, but eventually it got eclipsed by companies like Amazon, Google, and Mad Catz producing the same kind of system, only better. It's hard for me to see myself owning an Ouya now that I have a Fire TV and a Nexus Player. They did their best for what they started off with, and I hope the best for them wherever the people of the company go from here.

    Ouya needed to be released in 2010. Had they found a way to stick two duel-core SOC together and gave it 2 GB of ram back before phones started using quad-cores; I think Ouya would have generated enough sales momentum to hold on.

  • @dragonrider0601
    @dragonrider0601 7 лет назад +2

    The failure of OUYA should serve as a lesson for fledgling gaming companies to do their homework and understand how the game industry actually works. The whole Android operating system was a terrible choice for the OUYA, as you could just buy a tablet and download similar games from the app store, as well as having MUCH more functionality than a dedicated game console. It's like pushing two-way pagers as an SMS communication device; why not just use a cell phone? The free-to-develop and publish model they used sounds good on paper, but as we have learned from the video game crash of 1983, you need to have publishing control and ensure some kind of quality standard so that consumers don't get burned by crappy games again and again. And not to mention the low-quality OUYA controller which might was well be a crappy 360 controller knockoff; you could plug in other controllers, but that defeats the purpose of even designing a controller for the console in the first place.
    Developing a successful console costs hundreds of millions of dollars. You have to design all the hardware, the firmware, software, online functionality, first party games and launch titles, etc., not to mention the costs for marketing, localization, and testing the damn thing, and finally, manufacturing each system. It's one thing for a big company like Sony or Microsoft to pull together the funds and develop a next-gen console; it's another thing for a startup company to try to mimic this process using Kickstarter funds and 3rd party investors. Don't get me wrong, developing a console that can compete with the current gen systems can be done, as we've seen with the Sega Genesis, the Sony PlayStation, and the Xbox 360. It isn't cheap however, and requires a serious investment that most small companies simply aren't capable of.

    This is really challenging nowdays for small companies in tech world. They have idea, gather money, go to production and finally sold to consumer. But from the time of idea to final product for small group it takes long time and by this time idea already became old because technology has moved ahead to next generation and final product became out dated even before coming to market.

    I have an ouya. It was a very cheap console. Given the price I got my moneys worth out of it. played some games on it. I think the one of the reasons it failed to take off was the lack of official channels. (Netflix,Hulu, etc) The other big weakness was its crappy wireless reception. It would have been awesome for cloud based gaming. I bought an nvidia shield a few months later and really haven't used the ouya much since.

    If the OUYA came out three months within the Kickstarter project, the console might have seen more successful, even to a point where we would have seen version 2 by now, but they took too long to come to market.

    For some reason, the interface had very laggy scrolling and many 2d games too. I wanted to play a version of giana sisters with a joypad, but was put off of how jerky the scrolling was. I don't know why, because the specs are good for even 3d (shadowgun looks very smooth) but some of the 2d games have buggy scrolling, maybe it's not the machine's specs, but something the developers didn't do right?
    But it was nice for what it was (I am not expecting AAA, it's just homebrew and indie, but many titles which is good), I was actual impressed they managed to pull it and have over 500 titles on the market.
    One does not expect commercial console or PC qualities from hobbyist consoles.

    The problem was, first, technologic. The Ouya is a mobile phone and as all mobile phones, as soon as you try to run both the CPU and the GPU at full speed at the same time, it overheats even with the weak fan they added. Because of that, the CPU and the GPU throttle. But it also affects the controller. People thought there was a problem with the controller itself but it works perfectly with a non overheating device. And then, the biggest games were only android versions not optimized for the OUYA. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, being an open source device, moding and piracy is even a bigger problem on OUYA than it is on PC.
