    Game over.

There's a video out there that has a journalist who talked to a person who may or may not be part of konami but apparently (according to the source) they are trying to burn MGS and silent hill to the ground so they can focus on mobile games and gambling. I'm annoyed that MGSV won't be fully realised but konami are trying to burn their connections to the gaming industry.

David Hinkle hmm. There's a lot of conflicting stuff about kojima leaving but if you're correct i take back what i said about mgs v but silent hills is a very sad case.

Cant they just sell Silent HIll Brand to another publisher? PT was huge last year, if your talking about making money, the fact that this news is exploding all over the internet proves that this was a much anticipated game, this might be the most disappointing cancellation in gaming history. They would be stupid to abandon it altogether.

I highly disagree, despite it being severely underpowered, it really is the best out of the three.
Also I never said the Wii U was elite, my argument was that the games were.
"Wii U is by far the worst console Nintendo has ever released." I personally would give that title to the virtual boy, even though I guess you could argue it's not really a console.
What would I call the SNES? A masterpiece, but the Wii U? A blast.

BLACKB0ND It's because the brainless higher ups at Activision and Ubisoft, pushing yearly Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty games up the industry's butt.
Thanks to those games you can't survive in the industry anymore, UNLESS you release something yearly that's stupidly generic and the same but consumers love it more than anything.

Jon Snow We're not gonna get another vania from konami ever again. Koji Igarashi already left the studio like 3-4 years ago. And if you'll recall, the last games, LoS2 and Mirrior of Fate, sucked.
The only way we'd get another official castlevania game is if the rights get sold to someone else.

    Very simple:
-Konami want a yearly release of MGS
-Kojima likes to keep his team small and take many years to create his games
-Konami fired Kojima so they can do whatever they want with the franchise
    -No kojima=No fox engine
    -No fox engine=No silent hills

Souls games aren't difficult at all, they just require much more patience than the majority of triple A story-driven titles of today. Dark Souls and Bloodborne don't hold your hand, in fact they stab it repeatedly, drench it in oil and light it on fire.

THQ tanked because of their other investments, it had nothing to do with their games. They made ridiculous, very risky investments. Atlus for example is doing great!
So no, Rich. Companies just need to stop thinking games market works the same way as the frozen foods market, and these shitty pay to win/ horse armor DLC are sinking the market. Rockstar makes a game ever 3 or so years, they're doing extremely well and they're not always cashing in the same game.

    • @happyhuman3

      @lxXSuddenDeathXxl 9 лет назад +3

Rich sounded ridiculous. I almost unsubbed for putting false information out his ass.
He needs to do his research more especially since his channel is huge, you don't wanna be feeding assumptions that are way off.

    • @akiflyer
      @akiflyer 9 лет назад +5

      *****
No, my argument is reinforced. I wasn't disagreeing, I was praising rockstar. Even if I were wrong that one point doesn't make my entire argument invalid. THQ did tank because of terrible investments.
      RyuSaarva
Yes but they are making a profit even in this medium scale gaming. Which is my point, Rich says you can't be in the middle ground to profit, you gotta go big or indie. That's not true, most publishers are failing because they invest everything making a huge AAA title but then litter it with shitty DLC and paywalls, then the game falls flat and they blame piracy or the pre-owned market. (Or they pull a capcom and say there is no market for horror games)

    • @dreamerabe
      @dreamerabe 9 лет назад +6

***** Actually, both the PS4 and Xbox One are in the top 3 of the fastest selling platforms. They're doing good. It's the costs of developing games that might bring gaming down one day. That and microstransactions and day one DLC that makes gamers wary and makes them buy less.
Publishers and developers need to do it like Nintendo. They need to cut down costs on production, making them more viable as a business. Because by the way they're going they're going to go out of business when 1 or 2 games don't sell what they need to sell.

Hayden Latemore ya because their parent company got involved with some shady business and ended up going bankrupt due to the charges against them. They sold off their studios to companies to cover some of the fines. No amount of money that Atlus made could've saved them from the colossal fuck up that their parent company did (I can't remember the name off hand)
Now it's scary that they are in the hands of Sega....and well Sega.....I just hope Persona 5 sells a lot. Then again Sega should advertise games other than Sonic cause they do put out some good games, but nobody ever hears of them cause Sega never markets them.

This is all because the industry believed it's own hype about needing the biggest explosions and best graphics. Look at all the people we hate in the industry, the EAs, the Ubisofts, the Activisions, they pump out trash and half finished games and then nickel and dime us for content that should have been there in the first place. Now who is it we love? Lower budget but finely crafted full games from the Atluses, the From Softwares, the various indies, and yes Nintendo.
The poisonous "bigger is better" attitude has destroyed the industry and closed many a studio, Konami is just the next victim, it's only a matter of when.

You know, people have been jumping off on companies like Nintendo for being behind in third party games, Capcom being ignorant with their fans, and Ubisoft for pushing their games far out to the market too quickly. I agree with you, Rich, that our current gaming generation is absolutely out of whack to the point that it's scary. Personally, The chaos began when mobile phone gaming came to be, because I've noticed how well those games have sold because they're piss easy to pick up and throw away after a few minutes. That market has rounded up so many casual players that they don't want to move on to something more unique or complex (if that's the right way to put it). But then, you have those audiences who will play and only play the same crap for $60 per year. Now most developers are too frightened to innovate because the industry took a huge step back from what makes gaming great. That's why the indie market has sprouted into popularity, because the bigger companies have lost their touch and have know clue that there is a market to appeal to without relying on yearly blockbusters.
Well, after college, I'd like to become a game creator myself so that I can revive the gaming spirit that many have lost over the years. And I guarantee you, that anybody should take a chance. You never really know who's going to be interested until you try.

The problem is that these companies need more realistic expectations. Most of the JRPG market for instance exists in that "in between" space that doesn't seem to exist in the US. I don't think the Atelier games sell even a million copies by the time their runs are finished (Escha & Logy sold 57,550 copies in its first week in Japan and this broke their records), yet they sell enough for Gust to keep making more. AND they continue to do so without selling out to appeal to the lowest common denominator!
It's all a matter of what you expect. If you pump so much money into a game that it is considered a failure if it doesn't sell at least 10 million copies, you are setting yourself up for failure unless you have a guaranteed audience (GTA, CoD, etc.). Each individual company just has to find its groove, like Gust did. They know roughly how big their audience is and plan accordingly.

Couldn't development costs go down if the devs decided "Hey we don't need everything a AAA game does, including looks." And say it does good, isn't that less of a risk? I mean episodic games are doing good. Devs need to stop thinking they have more money than they do or that the game will sell more than it actually will.

It's simple, as a corporation Konami has bills to pay. They're making less and less money as their games get more stale and boring. We're living in an age where game developers are utilizing less effort and passion to dish out the same games every year. Activision is sitting on a gold mine with CoD. They're so rich that they can retire at any given time because the market for casual gamers doesn't care about the fun of gaming anymore. That's why innovation and TLC is exempt from gaming as a whole these days. At some point, these huge game companies are going to have to realize that risky projects actually sell. Hardcore gamers like myself wan't to play a fun and enticing game that's completely polished. That's why indie developers make so much money, because it's their passion. It's also my passion. One day soon I hope that i'll get my chance to learn the language of game development and make my own video games.. it's my dream and has been since i was in middle school.

Konami- a company responsible for allot of my gaming enjoyment seems like it doesn't give a fuck about gaming anymore. Sega, Nintendo, sony... It isn't hard to understand- Money and capitalism destroyed gaming...
There's no saving it at this point and it's just as RTU pointed out, It's turning into a two sided market now where every franchise gets an annual release, has a bunch of useless DLC, OR it's an indie game... And As far as I'm concerned, gaming is at it's death kneel right now.
Truly innovative videogames and unique titles that blew our minds are a thing of the past now.

One of the smartest things I've heard in a while, and a truth I feel will become more evident in time: "Konami's following the money, and the money isn't in making AAA games." 3:28 in the video.
All you need to do is compare the massive revenue for selling games to the comparatively tiny profit, the profit margins are razor thin, and it's too risky to be good business anymore. I predict that in the future, the market will be limited to about 10 AAA games per year, anymore than that won't be profitable for that market.

They don't care about video games anymore because over half of their money comes from casino games and like health care or whatever. They're slowly dismantling their video game company and wringing it out for all the cash they can get before they shut it down. They're all for the money and they have been since after Silent Hill 4.

4:38 - More than that, it's the graphics race that's causing a lot of this. Companies are so focused on making the game look pretty, and high resolution and perfect frame rates that they're spending so much on development, that they can't make it back if the game even sells modestly well. Unless it's a AAA blockbuster, the company is damaged financially by it. And not just a little, but a lot. It's devastating for one of these games to flop.
I've been saying that it's going to get to the point where development costs are so high that the money companies put into it won't be recoverable, even with AAA game sales. People looked at me like I was nuts when I first said this, but now it's starting to happen.
This is why I think the industry is going to crash as a result of this.

The developers and designers are over worked, so many games are trying to copy each other just to follow the money and many games reward people for spending more money or time on the game. We're also seeing a few situations with Triple A games that are borrowing concepts from indie titles-more specifically Alien Isolation. If it weren't for the likes of Frictional Games and their Amnesia series and its success, that game could never have happened. So what I think may happen down the line is a system where indie titles are the risk-takers, the games that experiment within their limited means to show what works and what doesn't and the Triple As will be taking some of those ideas and expanding upon them with a larger budget. On that note, I'm really surprised at what's happening with Silent Hills. The horror game genre is experiencing a renaissance of sorts and for some bizarre reason Konami isn't going to cash in on that, despite the immense success of its PLAYABLE TEASER?! Even IF Kojima is leaving, they'd still have at least two other people with big names attached and again-horror games are becoming a big thing right now. They have a chance to throw in their hat while the Triple A horror game market is still relatively sparse.

The only company left that tries new things constantly is Nintendo and they've mostly need successful with it. The Wii was major risk since it was so different from the "standard" console but it ended up working and crushed XBox's and PlayStation's attempts at motion control. The Wii U was also an innovative console but it didn't turn out how the Wii did. It might be stronger than the 360 and PS3 but it's out gunned by the One and PS4. It would have sold better but Nintendo didn't give it all the marketing that it needed. The majority of the exclusives on it are tons of fun and use the gamepad really well but a console needs 3rd party support. It seems like devs didn't want to take the time that was necessary to adapt a game to use to gamepad or they were just so focused on how the game looks and needed a stronger console to run it (an example of this is the new Batman, the Wii U isn't powerful to handle the batmobile to the standard the devs wanted). The Wii U might have some of the best and funnest games of this generation but it's not selling well due to it being less powerful than the PS4/One and 3rd party devs not wanting to take the time to adapt their game so that the gamepad will be useful

The problem is that there is a lack of RGDE (Pronounced as 'ridge' the acronym for Rapid Game Development Environment) Thus far the only RGDE is RPG Maker VX and Click team's Game Factory and both are ridiculously limited in scope. Although Game Factory is more versatile then RPG Maker, they still lack a capable RCC (Rapid Character Creation pronounced as 'riss'). While both terms are something That I made up, the fact of the matter that is cost way too much money to make all aspects of game content.
Such tools would significantly reduce both the cost and time it takes to develop various games of various genres. The flaw is that the tools themselves are not very easy to make.

I have felt that Japanese games offered more variety and innovation than most western developed games. Lately now, it seems if I want variety in games both in gameplay and art styles, I have to play the downloadable indie games.

Dj.D I was actually quite surprised with myself when I started playing more western made/inspired games in the previous generation.
Even a game like Vanquish, which I consider fun during the first few hours was great. But it seemed like a chore finishing the game. And the story was really meh, imho.
Don't get me wrong, I still love Kamiya's work.
Mass effect 1 and 2 are the best examples I can think of.
I still haven't finished ME3 though cause it kinda grew stale going into it immediately after playing the previous 2 games.
I'd also jump on the opportunity to play almost any JRPG during my PS2 days, but they've gone really repetitive lately.
Square-Enix made me hate the newer FF installments so much.
I was excited for MGS Peace Walker as well and got the HD collection, but I hated the mission based-chapter structure. They should have made a seemless transition release when they ported it over to the PS3. Same reason as to why don't really have any lans on getting Ground Zeroes or The Phantom Pain. I can just watch the whole game on RUclips anyway. But that's just me nitpicking.

This to me doesn't seem like they are abandoning games like Metal Gear and Silent hill, i think its Konami taking them over and getting ready to make new ones at a much faster pace than what Kojima and company have been willing to do, they would always wait a few years before games. Konami has already said they are making a "new metal gear series" i think that means they are gonna reboot it and churn out new metal gear games on a yearly basis and maxamise they DLC and the ways to nickle and dime you like the whole AAA gaming industry does all the time now. They have been infesting a shitload into the fox engine lately and they shown they could make pretty much any genre of game on it. So i think a lot of classic franchises are gonna have their reputations ruined as they rip you off more and more. ground zeros was a hell of a ripoff for the money you paid and i think we can expect more bite size games like that but this is all just speculation so i suppose we will see what happens

Konami is brokedick now. I hope another company like capcom buy the silent hill franchise from konami so they cant butcher it anymore

The gaming industry is not doing so well lately. It seems that they produce less quality games at higher prices, as if good content is irrelevant and the only thing that matters now is making money and milking the player base. I've seen this in multiple companies like Blizzard, EA, etc... It sure is a sad state of affairs. :(
