i own an Alienware alpha and I'm using it right now. I'm new to gaming, and was told to build a PC. I thought of both, but I have to travel a lot (Due to my parents being divorced) so getting a custom built PC was something I was going to do...but then I saw this...thing. It's no console. Don't listen to them. It's a micro-pc. I got the cheapest one and I already put some extra ram in there and I'm close to putting in a quad core i5. The thing is magical, but I saw 1 and only 1 flaw. no audio jack. you have to go out and buy an audio jack for a mic. What I do is use the 360 controller and plug the mic into it and I had to set it up, but it works. Great for 32" TVs. Oh, and you get a wireless dongle already built in.
10/10 Starter PC. Don't listen to your friend who is a rich fuck and has a 14 core intel processor and a titan in his computer. Start with Alienware. you can even take the tower ones and just take all the parts out and put them in your own case. Oh, and you get the free games, awesome PayDay masks+weapons. All in a little $549 textbook sized micro-case. Enjoy!

I realize that. But it gives us no idea what it's capable of. A gtx 750 could have 2 gb o VRAM and so could a 770.

It's a custom Maxwell GPU so it's basically a laptop 800m series GPU. So it's more powerful compared to a 700 series GPU.

I am well aware it's a GTX, I am just saying that it is in the category of an 800m series. So this GPU is a GeForce GTX 800 something.
Hi, thanks for this video. For some reason, I am having trouble removing the GPU fan. It seems like it's getting stuck on the shroud and the metal towards the back of the computer. Anyone know a way to get past this?

Can this handle a 45 or 65 watt tdp i7 Intel Haswell cpu? Also is it possible to make a barebones unit with 8gigs of ram n just the integrated nvidia gpu?
Question about upgrading: Where is the HDD stored at, is it easy to get to, and is there space to add a SSD to pair with the HDD?
itchyisvegeta Under the unit. Easy to get to. Only one HDD slot there. You can install an SSD.
whats the maximum room temperature it can withstant?
I first saw this yesterday while at work( Walmart ) in our pre-order booklet.. I currently own and use an Alienware X51( i5 3330 and upgraded it to a GTX 750 Ti ), My question, would it be at least comparable to what I get performance wise now or better. Thanks for your time
Since we don't know much about the GPU, and an i3 cpu is a really good cpu for the price..and honestly cpu doesn't matter as much in most games nowadays, i'd say that it would be probably comparable, but watch that skyrim video of the alpha base model; even with a few graphical mods that add more foliage and the like, it still stayed generally above 50 fps. I don't think it will handle the latest games like shadow of mordor on the best settings though.
You would get worse performance as the i3 is not very good at handling high amounts of bitmap streaming when rendering textures at a fast rate .....your i5 in your x51 was kind of meant for that. PC games nowadays, don't let you fiddle with CPU settings because indie titles that want to make it big in the gaming world rely on people with powerful systems to build profiles that would improve optimization for the others. The problem.......this takes a long time and optimization for some games is terrible unless you have a good CPU such as the i5.
How sturdy would this machine be if it was being used as a mobile gaming console that was hooked up and stationary inside of a camper van? Would I need to worry about anything snapping off? Would things like speed bumps pose a threat?
What about the HDD??? I want solid and they don't give option neither I saw here any glimpse of changing it...
I do have a question for Alienware. Will drivers be provide to back the OS down to Windows 7? I've preordered an Alienware Alpha as well. Looks like very nice small factor machine.

How power is the fan? What games can the fully upgraded version play, as in how much can it handle?
One thing im worried about is not being able to upgrade the GPU. I think no doubt if you bought a PS4/XB1 today and a Steam Console today (for a $150 more btw) in 8 years the console will still be able to pull of great graphics and run it at 30-60fps. While PC might have to run it at low-medium to maybe get 25.
Id rather build my own. But seems the only way to achieve this kind of processing power is to go to like a mini tower, which is something you cant keep next to a TV. Any suggestions?

Why didn't you make the GPU upgradable?
Only problem , I have is that the video card is having problems, with failing, can I buy a new video chip and replace it like you would the CPU, if so please advise, as the drivers keep failing, and screen goes black restarts 1-2 x then fails over and over til the unit reboots, and the failures start again. So I want to buy a new video card chip and replace it, if this is possible where can i buy it!

great build!!! REALLY compact and powerful and nice attention to details. i did a mini-itx build myself but limited to normal PC desktop hardware and internal PSU hence a bit cheaper and bigger but id say the price you ask is fair because you always pay a premium for the smaller formfactor. Mine : 300W TFX PSU-bequiet. Pentium G860 (might upgrade that one). KFA2 low profile GTX750TI. 128GB SSD / 1TB 2.5" HDD and custom case wrapped around it. not as small as the alienware alpha but not bad either.

What kind of graphics card SPECIFICALLY does the base model have? I bought the base model Alpha and I just want to know what number GTX the alpha has.
ChronoJustin It's a custom 2 GB Nvidia GTX video card, based on Maxwell architecture. It's equivalent to the 860m.

How will the HDMI-IN feature function? Does it do a split screen mode in the UI or would the console video feed itself be bypassed?
The HDMI function is a general pass through. Basically you call to Alpha to switch the video feed from internal to directly passing through the HDMI feed. This is all done via the Alpha UI console interface, with just a controller.
With the alienware alpha basic model, will I be able to use my nvidia shield tablet or handheld for game streaming from AW alpha to shield?

You can only use a 45 watt cpu, I think. It would be safe to look it up for yourself.
i pre-ordered my alienware alpha base model with the core i3 but trying to search for a 4590T core i5 because I will want to upgrade later brings up no results. Amazon sells the 4590 core i5 but there is not T next to it so would I be able to upgrade to that particular processor? it does have a higher clock speed than the T variant. The core i3T and core i7T exist on amazon just not the core i5T.

I'm definitely gonna buy this. Could I put a core i7 4790K into this? Or would I have to stick with the i7 4765T? They both have the same sockets (LGA1150).
I see this question was previously answered earlier posts. I think Ill upgrade i7 4765T later and just go with the base model.

The power requirements are different for those. Therefore, the power adapter may not be able to supply enough. However, we've seen users with this setup and no issues at all.

The HDD is located at the bottom of the unit. I did not mention it, but it's fully upgradable as well. Stays cool down there and is easy to swap quickly.

On your second question to add onto Marc's comment, the system only has 1 HDD slot.

Hunter Lawson No optical drive, however you can use and external optical drive or external hard drive to add content that is not digital download.

Nikkibruuuh TheBeast Yes, the processor can be upgraded; from i3 all the way to i7. You can upgrade RAM, CPU and HDD but the GPU is embedded on the motherboard to increase performance.

Can you upgrade the alien ware alpha's dual core to quad core? I have the alpha i3 with comes with a dual core and I heard that most games in the very near future will require a quad core which will make my alienware alpha usless.

Omar Omar The Graphics Amplifier is not compatible with Alpha. But you can use the embedded 860M+ Nvidia card included with the Alienware Alpha.

Makoto Hikami A lot, the difference lies in how fast the memory communicates with the computer. DDR3 is a whole different technology released years after DDR2 was available.

SirCharles The battery is located on the bottom on the motherboard, it requires a whole system disassembly to be reset. Nevertheless, there is a password jumper by the RAM modules.
Can this potentially fix issues from electirc shock? I had pluged my Asus Based Tower into a non grounded outlite and it made my games start having glitchy rendering and texture errors, I put the pin the in back of the motherboard and it fixed the issue. Will using the password jumper do the same thing? Thanks so much for responding
How many watts are left for usb slots?
The Ultimate Limit Battery Doctor might be able to give you a more specific number, but: "A unit load is defined as 100 mA in USB 2.0, and 150 mA in USB 3.0. A device may draw a maximum of 5 unit loads (500 mA) from a port in USB 2.0; 6 (900 mA) in USB 3.0."
Alpha has 2x USB 2.0 on the front and 2x USB 3.0 on the back.
We need more info on that "Custom NVIDIA GTX GPU". If it's the only non upgradable component we should have all the info we can. What is it comparable to? What series? 700? 800? 800M?
Well 700 aint maxwell. It's a 860M custum GPU I believe and from what I have seen it is that same GPU in all the different iterations that you can buy, you only upgrade the CPU mostly.
You can upgrade the storage, the ram and the cpu. According to IGN it's a Geforce GTX 750 Ti that's just a bit more powerful than the PS4 but I want to hear it from them... Alienware itself.

No because that would be stupid. AS developers wouldnt have any clue what specs the users have and you'd have different requirements for different games. It would defeat the whole point of a console.

I absolutely do but the whole point of a console is to develop your game for a set hardware allowing you optimize way better. PC games are hardly optimized and a lot of it is lazy back porting of console version. PC rely on the vastly better hardware to over come these things.
Clesarie is right, the point of consoles is to not have to develop for different sets of hardware. On the other hand, Alienware Alpha is not a console. It is in fact a PC. Most comparable to a laptop minus the monitor. People usually don't switch out hardware on laptops so it's a bonus that Alienware thought about that part.
And yet a lot of excellent games are console exclusives... If you can afford buying a 1500$ PC then good for you, but you have to see consoles as an extension to PC gaming, buy your multiplatform games on PC and leave the consoles to their exclusivities which are just as good (if not better in some cases) as PC games.
Will I be able to use my Scuf Controller instead of the Xbox 360 controller?
