    When I was in Amaco's glaze group the food safe question was brought up all the time. According to Cara who helps run the group Amaco's take on food safety is that they test each individual glaze and mark it accordingly as food safe or not food safe, they can not vouch for the food safety once glazes are layered as that combines ingredients that they haven't put together and tested and so they say you have to get your pieces tested if you want to be sure they are food safe and sell them as food safe.
    I'm on the fence with it😅
    Love your glaze brush bowl❤

      Hi and thanks for sharing your knowledge from Amaco. I think it's a pretty easy way for them to avoid being sued! I can't see that if one product is layered over another product, both of which were food safe, that this would alter the outcome markedly. 🤔. I'm sure the debate will continue....

    You look amazing au naturel my friend. Few can rock that look. Re the food safety, Amaco are really good testing and giving info. Echo other comments re their website. I have been using Spectrum glazes since the Amaco supply issues. They too are lead free and food safe but there a paucity of info from that supplier on layering combos or any Q&A’s on social media.

    Thanks for the shout out Sarah. I nearly spilt my coffee when I heard my name....
    I wonder if a coat of clear glaze would work over the chips, if folk are worried about food safety? I have only used them on non-food items so far but would love to use them on plates. Look forward to your collaboration with Monique.
    Hope to have a Wonky pot and Luminarie to show you soon. Being bisqued as I type! Best wishes xx

    Wow! Beautiful pieces as always! I’ve heard from several people that they have had problems with some of the elements at cone 5-6. It’s not that the Elements line isn’t supposed to be used at high fire, it just changes and looks much different than it does at cone 06. I’m worried about having pinholes with it since I bought 30 pints of it!! Uggg. So as long as both glazes are food safe and don’t contain anything bad in them they won’t make anything bad when they are layered. So think of it this way. Good plus good = good. Jessica Putnam Philips with ClayShare has a few really great videos about how this works and she explains it really well

      Thanks Michele- I'm on the same page as you regard good plus good = good. I can't see that the glaze suppliers could get away with no warnings on this subject and sloping shoulders as well! Amber Ash is gorgeous but I definitely fire it too hot (at 1212 degrees centigrade) I really need to do more testing! ❤😁

    Thanks for another informative and interesting kiln opening. You look fine with no makeup. You have beautiful skin. My little hydrangea pendants are still sitting on the glaze shelf with my note saying not to tilt them due to the glass frit. I do not know if they will ever get fired! One of my plates which is a gift is still waiting after 7 weeks! I may have to buy a kiln!

    Just a thought about food safety. It may be worthwile to find a lab that tests for such things. I think the glaze manufacturers could advise as to the lab they use. I would think that if the glazes individually contain nothing toxic, mixing them should not be a problem. Another great video. Were it not that I live in NYC and would have a tough commute, I would totally come to your studio ❤😂

    Hey Sarah oh I get so excited to see yr beautiful face pop up in my subscriptions list!! The main thing I have heard from Cara at amaco is that if u layer pc glazes they r no longer guaranteed food safe as they all have different chemical makeup. However u can layer and mix all amaco celadons with each other (incl mixing clear) because they r all the same chemical composition they will remain food safe. That is the extent of my knowledge lol. The amaryllis drooling!!! Omg gorgeous!!! U know me pink girl! It’s been added to my wish list! I have thrown my pinched rim bowl today and plan to glaze it in blue rutile outside oatmeal inside in your honour! Stay tuned! Love love love yr honey pots would love to see a how to please. I’ve never seen blue hydrangea alone look that pretty. How many coats do u know? Another lovely unload. Nat xx

    Love a "Naked"/Natural face, my typical look in the Shack. Well, honestly any day I don't have to clock in I stay Natural. I love your results here, and happy to see that someone else is into the whole Sphere mode. Addictive. Really impressed by the honey pots, but frankly what do you ever do that isn't impressive! LOL Congrats to all the students on their results for all their hard work! Thank you as always for sharing with the rest of us.

    Hi Sarah just looked at my Ancient Copper it says food safe on the tub. I hope it’s food safe as I’ve made plates with it. Also, I’ve just heard Ancient Copper is being discontinued but I’m hoping it isn’t true. Great video and your students make beautiful pottery 😍

    Hi, in regards to food safety I believe Old Forge creations has a lot of info on their website. Not with Amaco glazes specifically but in general.
    I have also heard of a lemon test or vinegar test at home to check for relative food safety.

    Great opening! Diane I think your fluted first piece is adorable! Great save! Have to admit Sarah your tempting me together some Amaco glazes. You know me, I'm a Mayco girl at heart, but only because I've not tried Amaco yet.
    What Cone do you achieve in these firings? I currently fire Cone 6.5 and thinking that may be too hot for the Amaco?
    Beautiful little honey pots!!!!

      Hello my lovely. Great to hear from you again. I fire to a good cone 6. My old program was to 1225 centigrade but I've reduced to 1212 centigrade - mostly due to electric costs. Doesn't seem to have made any difference whatsoever 😕. Amaco can go high but some of the Elements misbehave. ❤😊

      @@thepotterycorner that's a great help thankyou. My kiln fires hot so I'll have a play with my programmes and give Amaco a try. Blue Rutile and Smokey Merlot keep calling my name lol! Youre a bad influence on my purse lol

    Love your 100's of bits bowl. The colors are wonderful. Question: when refiring, due to the "not so nice" outside of the pot, could you turn the piece over & place on a stilt without too much change to the inside??

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  9 месяцев назад

      Thanks so much for watching. Unfortunately stilts will damage the inside too much which is a shame. This reglazing will feature in a future video so stay tuned! ❤️

    Amaco’s RUclips channel said that they only test each glaze separately for food safety because there are so many variables and combinations that they couldn’t verify every possible scenario. And they do recommend having the pieces tested for food safety if the glazes are used differently from the recommended instructions. It would be nice to know for sure, though.

      With the exception of using the glazes already labeled non food safe -- made me think and it would seem to me using the "chip" glaze layering is like the layering done with brushing. Sometimes examples on the Amaco glaze Facebook page shows pieces with so many different glazes layered (brushed/trailed/fluxed) it makes my head spin. Even the company has glaze layering reference tabs on their web page and print literature showing examples of layering -- maybe they tested all those layering combos??
      Anyway - I think common sense and applying good judgement when making is appropriate. My other thought is that the company has to say the maker is advised to send things out for testing because it covers them in the liability realm. 🤔
      Back to making 😃

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for watching and commenting. This is obviously a very confusing subject! Interesting that Amaco are slightly dodging that question 🤔 😊

    Love the kiln openings.
    What I have heard is when layering or combining glazes, the minerals can combine, and their percentages can go up. 1 glaze with 10% chemical A and 2nd glaze with 15% chemical A now equils 25% chemical A.
    Is this a true fact? I do not know, but that is the concern.
    I keep most of my stuff, so Im not worried about it.
    Allen from Michigan U.S.A.

      @thepotterycorner  10 месяцев назад

      Hi Allen and thanks for watching and your helpful comment. Must admit that is how I look at it. It is just the quantity of the contents when layered that would be a problem but as most of the Amaco/Mayco glazes are food safe I can't see that there would be dangerous levels of anything in them. A very useful and helpful comment to the other viewers. Many thanks - Sarah 😀
