Something I've noticed while watching the Animated Series is how Batman treats Two-Face. In ever instance I can remember, Batman calls him Harvey whenever he's talking to him. He's constantly trying to bring Harvey Dent back. The upstanding guy that was doing important work for Gotham, and his old friend. He sees his friend in a bad place, and that's all he sees. His friend.

    • @michaelandreipalon359

And there's also him hoping and promising that Dent will eventually go back to the light and sanity... but alas, unless we deem Fatal Five as truly part of the DCAU, it appears his wishes just weren't guaranteed, which makes it all the more sadder.

I remember when I met Kevin. It must’ve been Megacon Orlando 2015. I told him that he was MY Batman, how even when watching a different Batman series with a different actor, I always knew it wasn’t Kevin. I got his autograph, and in the most knee-shaking nervous voice, I asked him “Mr. Conroy, can I hug you?” And I received the biggest bear hug imaginable, a single tear dripping from my eye. I then spent the rest of my money on a Play Arts Kai Arkham City Batman figure. I went back to Kevin’s line, and I apologized as I knew it wasn’t fair, but I told him that I no longer had any cash, and that this was my first ever Batman figure, and it’d mean the world to me if he could sign it, and then I heard him say “Do you want me to sign the figure, or the box? Hey, do you want blue ink, or black ink?” And that was easily the greatest day of my life.

Exactly! Joe Chill gave him darkness, but his Doctor Father taught him respect for all life and his Philanthropist Mother taught him his compassion.
Batman exists so no other child suffers like him and that above all is what his crusade is about. Not just justice or vengeance. Compassion is why he took in Dick, Jason, Tim etc. It's why he's a hero not an anti-hero. I just wish more people would know that.
    Edit:
And it's not just the DCAU (heck Bruce is still on the meaner side of the huge spectrum of Batmen here, at least in TNBA). Batman: War on Crime, DC New Frontier, Grant Morrison and Scott Snyder's Batman, even Tom King's Batman in I am Gotham, and even recently, Detective Comics #1017 by Tom Taylor, all show Bruce's compassion for others, especially other children suffering pain of loss or loneliness or former criminals and people in poverty.

I think I replied to that Twitter post where I pointed out that Batman's entire reason for existing is borne out of compassion. Some people look at one aspect of a character they like, and think that's all the character is.
As an aside, I've heard people say they don't quite get Baby Doll before. What some might not be aware of is, Baby Doll is very loosely based (intentionally or not) on a real person. In the 80's, there was a sitcom called Webster which featured a then 12-year-old boy playing the part of a 5-year-old orphan. He would continue to play that little boy until he was 16 and never grew more than a few inches his entire life.
He didn't become a super villain, but he never did much acting outside of playing other children or just himself as a guest star. Audiences at that time, at least the older kids, would have picked up on that reference.

While people always envisioned Batman as this dark, gritty, edgey, and maybe even violent character who punches out criminals indiscriminately. And they are not wrong entirely, Batman is all that but he’s more. Most people forget how compassionate and kind he is, even for his enemies, Clayface, Two-Face, Scarecrow, and even Joker, he still strives to help them if he can. He puts on the mask to fight crime so that no one else will suffer through what he did. This also extends to the mainstream comics from before and after the DCAU, what separates him from Punisher and Rorscach, is he is driven by a sense of Justice not purely anger. Not to say other interpretations of Batman like the Dark Knight trilogy, BvS, and Frank Miller are wrong but they focused to much on the dark and not in the light in Batman. He is both, it’s why Batman is still my favorite superhero of all time and everyone else at number 2, the scene with Ace cementing that. He cares, he’s compassionate and good(not always nice but good).
Also awesome what Kevin did for you, man. Condolences to your grandmother. And now that we have a clip of Kevin saying the qoute from Batman Begins we can edit it into the scene.

This video was so needed. It's everything people miss about Batman summed up in three words. The Batman moments that truly blow me away have nothing to do with his muscle, or even his genius. They're about his patience, his sacrifices, his willingness to understand where people are coming from. The dress scene at the end of Harley's Holiday melts my heart every time. The clash between his frightful appearance and his deeply compassionate actions is so beautiful. The fact that Bruce can be terrifying and adorable in the exact same costume speaks volumes about his capacity for human connection.
One of my favorite ever Batman scenes is the one from Two Face, where we cut to the Batcave, and psychology books are strewn everywhere. After his accident, most people would have focused on fixing Harvey's deformity. But Bruce's first priority is Harvey's MENTAL state. I feel this is one of the best examples of Batman's philosophy. He doesn't assume that Harvey looking like a normal person again will make him okay, just like he doesn't believe that Harley is permanently broken because she's done bad things. Life is not black and white for Batman; he may live in the shadows, but he thinks in the grey. The criminals he deals with aren't "evil". They're damaged, hurt people crying out for help, and Batman is often the only one reaching out his hand. It's why I love him so much. He inspires us all to open our hearts and think about WHY someone might do a bad thing, rather than just being mindlessly angry at "the bad guy". Alright, enough rambling haha. I adored the video, you absolutely nailed it with your analysis. I especially loved "We care about this Batman... Because this Batman cares about _us_ ." Like, damn, that's exactly it. I've never heard it put that way, it's SO true.
And I'm so sorry about your grandma Mattie, good luck with this trying time. That ending was truly beautiful, and by sharing your personal pain with us, you also shared with us an amazing perspective on this character and what makes him important. Thank you. Special mention to how Amanda put it to Terry: "For all that fierce exterior, I've never met someone who cares more deeply for his fellow man as Bruce Wayne." One of my fav episodes is ‘lockup’ as it is the peak of Batman’s compassion to me anyway as it shows that he truly cares about the rouges and how he feels about their health. And how he is willing to admit as Bruce that he made a mistake in hiring Bolton and does everything he can to make sure they are safe from Bolton. It just shows that he takes responsibility for them and not just when it comes to taking them off the streets. He feels as broken as them and wants them to feel safe (as Alfred made him) so they can grow and change and not just have the rouges see him as another Bolton. But as someone who truly wants to help them. Because Batman May be the night, but the rouges are trapped in it.
(Keep up the great work guys)

This is the main thing I’ve been hoping to see in the Matt Reeves movie. This and white eyes. Every live action version of Batman, no matter how good or how bad, have just lost this heart that made the animated series so grounded and enjoyable to adults as well as children. Nolan came close-ish during Bruce’s young adulthood when he wanted to kill Chill but realized he’s just a desperate guy (which is paid off when he refuses to execute the farmer), but it doesn’t leave half of the impact as THAT Epilogue scene. I’m usually literally in tears by the end of THAT scene.
I blame it largely on Frank Miller’s success. Every Batman has to be a dang Clint Eastwood Dirty Harry take on Batman now. Let’s have more Batman like the animated series or pre-Millerian days, I say. Not that I don’t like cold, grumpy Batman, but it gets stale and predictable when it’s all we get. For a good read that leans into this aspect of Batman’s personality, I’d recommend Batman: War on Crime by Paul Dini and Alex Ross (big surprise - a talent from TAS)

I’m comin across this vid quite late but I gotta say, I agree 100%.
One of the main factors that draws me to the BTAS/DCAU Batman is how grounded and compassionate he is. So many episodes focus on him trying to SAVE someone from themselves, or prevent trauma, or stop them from doing something they’ll regret. Batman in the comics and movies might be a badass, but he often lacks that compassion that BTAS Batman does.

That dumbass tweet from the start is a great example of not paying attention. Ace could read minds completely, Batman couldn't have hidden malicious intent even if he tried. Ace even specifically mentions knowing about his lack of desire to use the weapon on her. She could feel his compassion and empathy radiating from his brain.
Batman related to her, as Ace mentions, and he hates that another child had their bright future stolen from them. She feels his genuine anger at her captors and sorrow for his team's inability to save her. Ace knew that Batman cared for her and wasn't going to use violence because he opened his mind up and shared these thoughts willingly.
Batman knew she would respond well because ultimately he has an unshakable faith in humanity. Where others could only see a threat to be conquered, Batman saw a scared little girl who desperately longed for connection. His gift to her before she died was understanding and recognition, and that's why he's the best.
It's all very clearly present in the scene, all you have to do is actually pay attention.

Hey, just wanted to say thank you for making this video. For the past couple of years I have gradually fallen out of love with the DC Universe and, almost to an equal degree, superhero comics in general. Almost every comic anymore is less about crafting a compelling or enjoyable narrative or even characters, but more about sensationalism. Everywhere you turn nowadays, DC is trying to push a “gritty” and “mature” version of the character that loses sight of their fundamental nature. It's comforting to know that what I used to love isn’t really gone. That version of Batman will always exist, if not on the screens then in our hearts.

Where we see an older Bruce saving a hostage from a group of kidnappers and the stress causes him to have heart problems, collapsing to the ground and forced to defend himself with one of the kidnappers gun. This is what forced him over the edge and makes him retire the mantle. A gun, the possibly he could’ve killed someone and becoming something promised to fight.
