    Batman had to have been born in the early 60s. Since if the animated series is canonically in 1992. The main reason being is the Robin issue. Bruce Wayne clearly had been Batman a few years before the start of the series, since he adopted Dick Grayson when he was around 7-10. Dick Gray is at least 17 or 18 by the start of the animated series since he's in college. So this means that at minimum he was Batman 7 to 10 years before the start of the series. Hence he had to start his career around 1983 to 1986. Batman is clearly in his 30s during much of the animated series, and its heavily implied he's at least mid career at this point. Outside of Mask of the Phantasm we get very few accounts of early Batman adventures in this universe

      Oh, but I think these people DO think about it. The people behind Batman always find little ways to mess with our heads. For example, if you freeze-frame the scene that introduces Vicki Vale in the 1989 movie, you'll notice that the newspaper Kim Basinger is reading mentions "President Truman" - who, of course, stopped being President in January 1953. This despite the fact that we also see color televisions in the movie (color TV not being introduced until 1954 at the earliest) and hear Prince music on the Joker's boombox (Prince's first album being released in 1979). Of course, my reasoning has always been that Vale is inside a newspaper office, and that what she's reading is a back issue.

      I'd say 35 in his first appearance and throughout the 3 seasons of BTAS. Then 38-39 in The new batman adventures. 40 - 45 in JL and JLU. 85 in beyond and early 100s in epilogue when Terry is in his mid 30s I'd say.

      Yh. I seen an image a couple times of DCAU Bruce throughout the DCAU from childhood to elderly citizen. They always make him too young imo. It annoys me when they do for some reason. Like DC heroes are are quite up there in age in general I've found or at least imagined. I like that they are older. I also imagine Clark as being maybe 7 years younger than Bruce. I'd say when they meet in the DCAU I have Clark at around 31-32 when Bruce is 38-39

    I guess it works because he will be at his peak at 20's to 30's. Around his mid to late 30's he will have to get help some how (The Justice League). As time progress, he will gain experience and start figuring out ways to get things done more effectively. People will know him so you will start seeing his collaborations here and there.

    So Bruce Wayne left Gotham and started his training to become Batman at 18 in 1980, that works I suppose. Given, that the The Grey Ghost episode of BTAS showed the cover of a magazine with
    date of October 19, 1992, that means that Bruce was born in 1962, so he was 30 in 1992. Wow, so that make Bruce 15 years older than me! I assumed he was in his 30's in the 90's considering he was a kid in the late 60's to early 70's. This makes a lot of sense.

  • @thecarolinabull01

    I'd say this is pretty much spot on. I'd like to go with 1963 as DCAU Batman's official birth year, since, in my mind, Bruce can be no older than 55 during the prologue of "Rebirth." Yet, at the same time, I can't imagine him being younger than 30 at the beginning of BTAS. Either way, I enjoyed the video.

    In The New Batman Adventures he is 35-39.
    In Justice League he is 39-45.
    At the very start of Batman Beyond he is 56.
    In the TV Show he’s 70-75.
    At the end of the show he’s 80.
    Oh, and int just scene where Tim Drake is tortured by The Joker, I believe Bruce was 45.

    As someone else who grew up watching this animated universe, I always assumed that Batman & others would work multiple cases at a time but individual episodes focus on particular cases. Therefore, the passage of real time doesn't affect the passage of time in the animated universe properly/synchronously. *several epsiodes would take place in overlapping timeframes, so years don't pass at the same rate as it took us to watch them*

    I'm sorry that I can't quote where I read it, but I once read a Marvel editorial on time and aging in comics and they stated that Daredevil has been 32 years old for his entire comic book run. While Spider-man aged under a decade during the same time going from getting his powers at age 15 (in the 60s) and only aging to his early 20s and stopping. Comic book Tony Stark built his first suit of armour during the vietnam war but he isn't in his 80s in the comics. They had to retcon his origin to "Fix" the inconsistancy. Nailing down an age for a superhero and then trying to force it to be concruent with our own timeline just doesn't work, but it is fun to try. Very well done. Great video. :)

    Great video! Keep up the good work! There is another subject that I believe would be important to ask ourselves. I was always wondering for how many years each Robin was working with Batman. I don't know if the animated series and the Arkham games would have different results, but playing the Arkham games it would seem like during the events of Arkham Asylum, we are already at the point that Robin is Tim Drake, while Batman still looks in his mid 30s (or his prime). That would mean that each Robin has not been with the title for very long, but on the other hand we usually see each Robin starting pretty young as a Robin, and getting visibly older before they stop or "die".

    I wouldn't say that each year that passed for us was a year for them. Some episodes cover a week or more of time (Tyger Tyger, for example), some cover less than a day (Harley's Day Out), so it's hard to say exactly how much time passed, unless other dates were posted in the DCAU. In general, he tends to hover around 33.
    Here's some fun math... figure out Amanda Waller's age in Epilogue... I'd say she looks DAMNED good for how old she likely is.

    DCAU's Bruce Wayne was born in 1960. Here's why:
    _ In the Mask of Phantasm, which runs in 1993, it is stated that he became Batman 10 years later. In the flash back, he seems at least 20, but less than 25
    _Batman Beyond's action does not seem to run from 2039 to 2042. In that case, I think Terry would have turned 18 and go to college, it did'nt happen. So I think he was born in 2023, the shows runs in 2039/40 and he is 16/17.
    _ Bruce is both mentioned to be "in his 70s" and "80 years old" during Batman Beyond, I think that's because he is 79 first, and then turns 80.
    So, he was born in 1960. He became Batman at 23, was in his early 30s at the beginning of the Batman TAS.

    • @dcauwatchtower
      @dcauwatchtower  6 лет назад

      Pretty solid logic. Only real thing I disagree with is the Batman Beyond part, as it does run to at least 2042. Terry is stated to be 16 when he became Batman (we learn this in “Epilogue”) and is said to be 17 a few times throughout the series. Mathematically, yes, of course he continues to age, but we’ll be doing a video on Terry’s age down the road too.

    • @jockonde9661
      @jockonde9661 6 лет назад

      What make you think that Batman beyond run until at least 2042? I've not watched every BB episodes so perhaps I have missed a clue in this regard. In this case Bruce could have been born in 1962. 21 when he become Batman, 29-30 at the beginning of Batman TAS, 31 in the mask of phantasm, 77 in 2039 and 80 in 2042.

    Bruce says in one of the Batman Beyond episodes that he was eight when his parents died, he flat out says it, which adds to the JL and JLU episodes. So any other media that says that he's any other age, should be incorrect, because he says it at least three times on screen.

  • @obvioushieidude7668
    @obvioushieidude7668 3 года назад +3

    I know this was posted 2 years ago, but this was pretty in depth. However I just cannot imagine Bruce Wayne being only 28-31 at the start of Batman: The Animated Series. Aside from the fact that he looks well into his 30s, he'd have to be at least old enough to be Dick's father, as the two clearly have a father son relationship. I doubt a 28-31 year old could be a father-figure to someone who's college aged. Now a 34-35 year old, that makes sense?. Since he went abroad to train for several years when he was 18, I'm guessing he returned sometime in his mid 20s. In the Mask of the Phantasm flashbacks he's supposed to be in school, but it's possible that he started late due to traveling abroad. Let's say Bruce was around 23-26 at the time of the flashbacks. That would make him 33-36 at the time the show starts.
    In the episode Harley's Holiday, Harley Quinn mentioned to Veronica Vreeland that she had met her "a few years ago" when she had a gun on her head. Now we know that Harley Quinn joined the Joker as the events of early episodes took place. In the episode Beware the Creeper, Joker is celebrating his 7th anniversary. Most of TNBA takes place in 1999 (except for Holiday Knights and Growing Pains), therefore he would have become the Joker around 1991 or 1992 depending on the month. Harley probably joined later on in 1992 or possibly early 1993, meaning Harley's Holiday probably takes place around 1994 or 1995. Therefore Bruce would be around 35-38 (or 36-39 if the show ends in 1995) at the end of the series.
    By TNBA, Bruce could easily be around 40-43. Even though he doesn't look any older than he did in BTAS, he does show concerns over aging in the episode Mean Seasons. So him being in his early 40s around that time would make sense. Of course this would mean he'd be 42-45 at the start of Justice League, I don't think him still being in tip-top shape well into his 40s is out of the realm of possibility. I mean there was the Near Apocalypse of 2009, during which Bruce would have been in his early 50s (After he comes out of the Lazarus Pit in Out of the Past, he looks to be in his early 50s). Also I think it was either Bruce Timm or Paul Dini would said he always pictured Bruce Wayne to be around his mid 30s. So it's possible that they kept that upper 30s design in mind when they did TNBA and Justice League/JLU. Obviously the exceptions being Batman Beyond, when Bruce Wayne quits being Batman in 2019 and the elderly Bruce Wayne in 2039.

      I agree with those points, but Harley must have joined the Joker several years after he began, because when Harley was the Joker's therapist, he was already a well-established supervillain. I think we need to accept that the year a show came out does not indicate the year in which it happens.

      @@Blokewood3 That is a good point. All we know is that by Harley's Holiday, she's been with the Joker for a few years. But my main point is that there's no way for Bruce Wayne to be only 28-31 in Batman TAS.
