The way Daggett talks about the residents sort of reminds me of how the US government and media has talked about the people in Gaza. It’s so grossly dehumanising it makes my skin crawl, “died” “a 5 year old woman”. And what makes it worse is that both Daggett and the Politicians benefit from the suffering of the people they are dehumanising. Ah yes. The Israeli Bombing of the Gaza Strip. Funny enough,Donald Trump of ALL people would have been first to go to bat for Israel. But Joe is not really doing anything for Palestine either.
Villains like Daggot are a great reminder of way Bruce became Batman. Ideally, Bruce would be able to solve most of Gotham’s problems without becoming Batman. But with people like dagget influencing the system so heavily, Batman needs to go outside of the law in order to stop him. (I think that might have been part of what the dream sequence was alluding to, but I might be wrong).
I read the dream as bruce wanting to help but worried that nothig he do will matter and that there will always be people he isn't able to save somehow, and that eventually there'll be too many people for him to be able to do anything for even with his wealth

This indicates to me he is either a migrant, a federal European union supporter or generally a reddit tier pseud who sees himself as le citizen of the world, national identities are so backwards man type of person.
I saw the handouts part of the dream sequence akin to Bruce realizing that he can't just throw money at this problem. He is saddened as it dawns on him that these downtrodden are in this position because of a neglectful system that leaves him wondering if he can do more. Giving them some money might help now, but unless he does something to provide stability, these people will just end up right back where they are sooner than later.
2:11 its actually not about donations being pointless, its about that even rich people like Bruce cant help EVERYONE. Its not saying "Dont donate!" but "You can't donate to everybody."
Honestly, I'd love it if The Batman 2 continued to throw shade at the elite. Like, if the villain is Mr. Freeze, they should make it clear that Mr. Freeze is the sympathetic villain who can be reasoned with, even though it would be hard, and he has understandable motivations, wanting to save his dying wife. And Mr. Boyle is the vile villain, the man with the heart of ice, who uses his philanthropy to improve his image, but in reality, he is willing to let a woman die if that would save him a few pretty pennies.
Welp, I was going to try to sleep after staying up for 6 hours past when i normallygo to sleep, but I guess that now has been thrown out the window time to watch this 30 times on repeat
I legitimately needed to focus on something else, but absolutely could not. I felt compelled to re-watch the entire thing right away, because the image on screen became more and more comical as the commentary went on. I nearly laughed out loud when his picture suddenly appeared with the description of Boss Biggis.
Roland Daggett's use as a way to showcase corruption in the show was quite effective and hycertainly wasn't the only culprit but having him be a recurring figure coupled with Ed Asner's great performance is what made Daggett much more memorable than other culprits with similar roles. Was it surface level, yeah quite a bit, but it's better than some other shows at the time did when it came to their themes. Speaking of other examples of corruption, there are quite a few examples like Ferris Boyle, Derek Powers, Penguin (in TNBA), Lex Luthor (my favourite) and so on, but the one instance where I felt it actually detracted from an already existing character and made his story less interesting is Daniel Mockridge with Riddler (sidenote I'll always say Nigma with an I). I felt that having Riddler's origin be that he became the Riddler for revenge because he was tricked not as compelling for the character as him becoming Riddler because he needed to prove his intellect and superiority and found normal life dull. It's still present through his dialogue but it's not as prominent until "Riddler's Reform" and even then I wouldn't say it's too focused on. True, Mockridge doesn't appear again but the effects of the episode he appeared in are still very prevalent in "What Is Reality " and I would just have rather they had moved on. It's one of quite a few issues with the DCAU Riddler which you would know since you made a video about him. I think The Batman 2004 handled the approach of him becoming Riddler for revenge in a much more interesting way as it showed that he was always this obsessed and the revenge was just an excuse he used for himself. I've said it before but my favourite adaptation and portrayal of the Riddler is the one voiced by Wally Wingert.
A policy of hiring cheap stupid goons fits the whole vibe of trying to maximise profit rather than efficiency, so i suits the character. He probably doesn't pay on time either.
Roland Daggett reminded me a lot of Lex Luthor and Kingpin, someone you knew was a criminal but you couldn't prove it and was always a master of covering his tracks. He was a cool throwback to the old retro villains that you used to see in the old 1930s gangster movies and while he wasn't an evil madman like The Joker, he represented a different kind of evil: corporate. Daggett was a very wealthy guy who throws a lot of weight and commands a lot of influence in the criminal underworld but always got everyone to do his dirty work. He's not a villain you physically throw down with, Batman has to find ways to outsmart him and hopefully catch him out. I wished he made more apperances in the show as i would have loved to seen him eventually get his comeuppance
The Dream Sequence (in my opinion) is more over about Batman's fear that nothing will ever be enough to fix all the problems. But again, that is my veiw of it.
Here’s an idea for a future topic, Tony Zucco use it as a comparison between the animated series and the Batman cartoon. I think one shots villains are easier to start out with than recurring villains, after all characters who are basically one and done how much easier to comparison to recurring ones
I always Dagett, especially in Appointment in Crime Alley, as a take on Trump (similar to Max Schreck in Returns and certain versions of Lex Luthor). Imagine Roland now, a senile politician backed by a far right movement.
I said it last time so I'll say it again he's probably loosely based off of Robert Mosley who's pretty much responsible for so many black communities getting bulldozed for freeways (not to get too real)
The thing I love about Roland Dagget is that he is a deconstruction of the "Crooked Businessman Who Indulges In Villainy To Make More Money" we got in kids shows in the '90's: The schemes are so impractical that they cost him a fortune, his reputation is ruined when his crimes are revealed, he ends up goin' broke from legal fees, he is stuck workin' out of one of his shuttered businesses, and he ends up in prison due to no longer bein' able to afford his expensive lawyers.
Hands won't help everyone since that may make them greedy and demanding so that's something I disagree on. The better option which we do see Batman do is getting them a stable job so they can earn the livable wage instead of just handing them money and expecting them to use it to fix themselves.
Does anyone else I was thinking in Romans first appearance he basically could be seen as a metaphor for plastic surgery in his first appearance. He is offering it to someone who would need facial reconstruction surgery and then he’s planning it to sell it to the vein which is what plastic surgery has become in the mind of most people and I think, even in Japan at one point plastic surgery did cost money and that does have public healthcare
Hmm. WB copyright claims the video talking about how the stand in for the rich industrialists abusing people for money is the most despicable villain in the series. One could almost think that they were . . . offended by it? Nah, I'm sure it's coincidence. Also, I want to apologize for the outburst in the original video. Without the context of what was going on in my head, that might have seemed a little strange. Of course, if it had been an actual psychotic episode, context probably would have been irrelevant because it wouldn't have been any more sensible. Fortunately, that was not an episode, or at least not a psychotic one. It was just a case of what psychologists call "catastrophic thinking," an anxiety induced state of panic where one leaps to irrational worst-case scenarios. I'll leave the full details for therapy, but to sum up briefly, because that stupid capitalist vs. socialist argument was adjacent to an actual episode I went through in 2017, the fact that I brought it up again in a context where it wasn't actually that relevant brought memories back and . . . well, you can imagine why that panicked me. And in that panicked state, my brain was racing too fast for me to use standard coping mechanisms, such as reminding myself to think in the first person in order to avoid depersonalizing my thoughts. Fortunately, I have arrangements with my family to check in on me regularly in case things like this happen, so I had help to work through it, though it did take time for me to calm down enough that I could visit RUclips again. So much stress over nothing, but at least no harm done. Aside from the embarrassment. Anyway, thanks for your understanding.
its weird how little dagget appeared in later seasons as his early appearances made it seem he'd be one of the BIG villains of the show, the face of "legitimate" criminals in our society who abuse their positions of power. Instead a lot of his comeuppance happened offscreen and is jsut implied after catwoman and batgirl defeat him.
Gotta love how, years later, Dr. Milo would finally get his comeuppance for his own role in Daggett's schemes when Doomsday squashed him like a bug. The DCAU never once allowed the truly evil characters to get away scot-free, even if it took nearly a decade to punish them.
Well like I said that both Roland Dagget and Boss Biggis are people that should never be alive and I wonder that Dagget should have been in Mystery of the Batwoman were he teams up with Penguin, Throne, Carlton and Bane Glad you added the Dark knight Rises there as I think they change his name to John instead of Roland because of how it sounds like Nolan and that would have used Roland during Bruce’s final years before retiring and that in my Head canon that Bruce did married Selina.
This video shouldn't have even been copyright claimed, it is all pure fair use. Even the use of footage is used to explain a point or a theory. I'm disgusted by warner bros. on this front.
Daggett is just too one-dimensional for my tastes. Like Boyle in Heart of Ice, he’s just meant to be a character that kids will realize is a villain even though he doesn’t rob or punch anyone.
I love how that show has some villains with literal superpowers. Anything from werebeasts, to mutants, to straight up wizards. And then there's just some random dude named Daggett, who's just a rich asshole
Both socialist and capitalist medicine have significant downsides that cannot be overlooked. You're either paying an arm and a leg for untested treatments, or you're waiting forever because you're not a "priority case." More people need to call out the flaws of both of these economic systems.
@jordanloux3883 And I'll take the one where I don't have to be practically bleeding out to get immediate care. Take the good parts of both systems, and you'd have healthcare perfected.
By "best parts," I mean basic care and ER visits being totally free, but anything above that requiring a _reasonable_ out-of-pocket expense. I'll make an exception for reconstructive surgery, but cosmetic procedures should not be covered by basic healthcare. If it's for vanity, you're footing the bill yourself.
No. I asked Dan Riba and he said they had already created Daggett before any of them saw Batman Returns. They also were weirded out that their episode The Mechanic shared the plot point of Penguin taking control of the Batmobile with Batman Returns. It’s funny how these weird coincidences happen.

@@constantinethecataphract5949yeah, I don’t know why he said that either. It’s about Batman’s fear of never being able to do enough as one man
@@waltergaming817
Also he calls himself European.
Europeans identity with their countries first they would say their country first before European. This indicates to me he is either a migrant, a federal European union supporter or generally a reddit tier pseud who sees himself as le citizen of the world, national identities are so backwards man type of person.
Truely ironic how the video you make about an egotistical industry man gets taken down by an egotistical company. For shame, Warner Bros.
Roland Daggett is definitely related to Derek Powers
2:16
It seemed like Bruce was stressing over never being able to do enough. Not a statement on handout policies
It's uncanny how Dagget's voice is very similar to an IRL modern person who is doing the same thing. Like talk about foresight....
Ed Asner is the voice of Roland Daggett in Batman: The Animated Series. Rip!
2:11 its actually not about donations being pointless, its about that even rich people like Bruce cant help EVERYONE. Its not saying "Dont donate!" but "You can't donate to everybody."
Bro I’m so mad for you that the vid got taken down but DAMN that edit is CUTTING 😂
Well done 😎
Huh. Not what I got from the dream sequence. The take away I got was "No one person can solve all the world's problems"
Roland Dagget's design and demeanor also closely resemble Spider-Man villain Norman Osborn (minus the "Osborn Cornrows").
Malicious compliance at its best. Chef's kiss! 😘🤌
Sorry your video analysis was copyright claimed. Though it does reinforce your point about corporations and people at the head of corporations.
That’s what I was thinking
David Zaslav.
The Dream Sequence (in my opinion) is more over about Batman's fear that nothing will ever be enough to fix all the problems. But again, that is my veiw of it.
How did you filter the clips? The perfect black and white actually looks really cool
Hate that you were forced to alter your video, but love your take on the moral repugnance of Roland Daggett. Keep up the good work!
It’s ok, I got to make a fun joke about it!
Daggett industries is also referenced in the Arkham games. The company is frequently mentioned in newspaper headlines.
Here’s an idea for a future topic, Tony Zucco use it as a comparison between the animated series and the Batman cartoon. I think one shots villains are easier to start out with than recurring villains, after all characters who are basically one and done how much easier to comparison to recurring ones
Hi, Serum Lake
Howdy!
I'm not Serum Lake, but I *am* interested in propane and propane accessories.
Thanks for the reupload.
I wonder if the reason Daggett's minions are so pathetic is because he hired the cheapest ones.
Eh, Germs is a pretty solid combatant. That can't have been cheap.
Warner Bros keeping it in character I see
I always Dagett, especially in Appointment in Crime Alley, as a take on Trump (similar to Max Schreck in Returns and certain versions of Lex Luthor). Imagine Roland now, a senile politician backed by a far right movement.
I said it last time so I'll say it again he's probably loosely based off of Robert Mosley who's pretty much responsible for so many black communities getting bulldozed for freeways (not to get too real)
"It's like he just hires the first people that walk through the doors!" 🤣
No problem, I'll also try to keep that in mind for the future!
its weird how little dagget appeared in later seasons as his early appearances made it seem he'd be one of the BIG villains of the show, the face of "legitimate" criminals in our society who abuse their positions of power. Instead a lot of his comeuppance happened offscreen and is jsut implied after catwoman and batgirl defeat him.
I feel like giving him a big showdown would just be validating his ego.
Besides, he causes his downfall, which is hilariously karmic.
Gotta love how, years later, Dr. Milo would finally get his comeuppance for his own role in Daggett's schemes when Doomsday squashed him like a bug. The DCAU never once allowed the truly evil characters to get away scot-free, even if it took nearly a decade to punish them.
Well like I said that both Roland Dagget and Boss Biggis are people that should never be alive and I wonder that Dagget should have been in Mystery of the Batwoman were he teams up with Penguin, Throne, Carlton and Bane
Glad you added the Dark knight Rises there as I think they change his name to John instead of Roland because of how it sounds like Nolan and that would have used Roland during Bruce’s final years before retiring and that in my Head canon that Bruce did married Selina.
Dagget doesn't seem like he's good at playing nice with others.
@@jordanloux3883I thought so and that he is pure evil
Maybe people like him would be a perfect exception from the No Kill Rule. Granted that would lead into Batman or rather Bruce being a dictator.
As an American I appreciate this vid.
This video shouldn't have even been copyright claimed, it is all pure fair use. Even the use of footage is used to explain a point or a theory. I'm disgusted by warner bros. on this front.
Uuuuuuuugh, this guy. Batman should have just let Clayface end him.
Daggett is just too one-dimensional for my tastes. Like Boyle in Heart of Ice, he’s just meant to be a character that kids will realize is a villain even though he doesn’t rob or punch anyone.
My guess why he’s got incompetent henchmen is that’s he’s a shitty boss who underpays them so all the good henchmen won’t work for him.
I think this role contributed to me hearing Ed Anser when I read original post crisis Lex. Also hope you cover his turn as Granny Goodness.
0:22 personally, my favorite of all of the original btas enemies. I love that episode so much
I love how that show has some villains with literal superpowers.
Yeah well I'll take the one that doesn't put you in debt for life
@jordanloux3883 And I'll take the one where I don't have to be practically bleeding out to get immediate care.
Roland Dagget is the most dangerous mob boss. He can give lex luthor a run for his money
Just leaving a like. Have no time to comment properly for the video as of this writing.
I think that Ronald daggett own,s Ace chemicals
Suddenly this essay hits harder. . .
I think Hagan should have been allowed to kill Daggett tbh
Did Ed Asner have some kind of contract that he had to be in every truly Great animated series of the 90s? I swear this guy was in everything.
at 9:21 thanks for the cameo of me luke and the mention of me at 10:12
I really hate that Daggett never got what was coming to him. He always seemed to get away with everything by passing the buck to someone else.
I don't think he's incompetent in hiring idiots. I think he purposely hires people who pose no threat to him.
"Appointment in Crime Alley" is about Batman combatting gentrification.
Dang why dose Warner bros hate you I feel bad I have make sure I have my notifications on for your channel
Is there any truth to the rumor that Dagget was originally supposed to be Max Shrek?
No. I asked Dan Riba and he said they had already created Daggett before any of them saw Batman Returns. They also were weirded out that their episode The Mechanic shared the plot point of Penguin taking control of the Batmobile with Batman Returns.
It’s funny how these weird coincidences happen.
@@SerumLake Thanks for answering, that was one of those rumors that persisted forever!
