yeah it just fits the concept of amazo much better. first starting out as a literal blank slate but then becoming a literal golden god.
But what makes it even better is it doesn't do the schtick of removing all the comicbook elements from the design as other design overhalls/redesigns tend to do. his design omages classic 1950s scifi B-movies which does keep the feeling of retro comic art
when he showed up in Young Justice (before that show went to absolute shiɬ) I was like _"THAT'S_ AMAZO?" it's such a dumb look.. but yknow, old comics. that's how it is.
I liked how Amazo saw his creator Dr Ivo as a father and was tenderly watching his body before it got blown up

We're not gonna remember every line from just any movie, the video the way it is I wouldn't care to add more with how informative it already is. To forget what to include after the final product is done is what comments are for. For the times we forget to include certain material given people will step up to let us know what could've complimented our makes. In the DVD commentary, the writers talk about how they always got complemented on how forward thinking they were when planning the season and how they made this big speech, hinting at Lex's quest for immortality and godhood.
They also say this while laughing their asses off and follow it up with "actually, we just kind of pulled the Lex AMAZO bot out of our butts because we needed a big threat and it got connected by the fans that are way smarter than us.
Justice League Unlimited's interpretation of Amazo will always be my favorite and although he only appeared in very few episodes his growth was very interesting and quite deep. The philosophy Luthor's gives him is quite simple but also deep and genuine.
I loved this version of Amazo so much that I’m grateful they added to his story with the comic justice league infinities

Yeah. It's unfortunate that the writers put themselves against the wall by making Amazo very powerful and adaptable since his debut episode that they had difficulty writing him in stories (and even to where his presence would invalidate the need of the Justice League). :c
His overall design is super unique compared to many others, making him a literal blank slate allowing him to morph and stuff, and when he becomes Gold it just shows how much power he's obtained

Considering Luthor "defeated" Darkseid by literally _handing_ him the Anti-Life Equation (or something Darkseid confused for it), I always thought the implications of that were supremely not good in the very near future...

I love this episode because it really contextualizes immortality. Amazo realizes he's advanced and evolved to the point that he will live to see the last star burn out, and now he wants to find a purpose in anything. He also acknowledges his own sense of desire, seeming to be malcontent with the notion of being DC's Watcher.

Justice league tas is so deep with how it builds up so much for it's characters in all the connecting tv shows and movies.
Seeing it as an adult I'm surprised how many layers of complexity are in this kids show when adult shows can't even touch a single fraction of this greatness
That’s something I noticed as well when I watched it for the first time last year, a kids show from the early to mid 2000s somehow has more adult themes than actual adult shows and movies
pretty much, strange the "kids" shows that can go in deep while still being tasteful and entertaining as oppose to "adult" shows that usually does the opposite in most case on the Cartoon front
I think that's kind of the point. Giving kids something to grow into and live up to rather than perpetually infantilizing them. Choosing to give kids better aspirations rather than cheap "representation".
That’s what great writers can give you. This show is way more mature than any of the live actions DC films

Even when I was a kid, I thought Amazo was OP. And terrifying. It's good that he was only used sparingly because the showrunners would've written themselves into a corner-well, they kind of already did.
Also: this Lex Luthor is my favorite version of the character. Underrated villain. Clancy Brown is to Luthor what George Newbern and Tim Daly are to Superman; what Kevin Conroy is to Batman, Mark Hamill is to Joker, and Susan Eisenberg is to Wonder Woman. Brown just _is_ Lex to me, and it's always bummed me out how he's never recast as other iterations of the character.

did he not already? Man that was a great one. the Batmen scenes were fantastic, and the ending is kind of amazing because the Lords are so certain that their way is the only way, that they're willing to force it on others _in another dimension,_ yet the only thing they accomplish is the BAD parts of 'doing the hard thing for the greater good.' pretty much everything in JLU season 2 is their fault, their plan backfired magnificently.
The show young justice gave a weakness to amazo that in hindsight makes sense: he can only use one power at a time, but can swap almost immediately. I also think he is less powerful than this version. This version is awesome.
The takedown on Young Justice’s Amazo was one my favorites in all of animation.

In a way, that kind of is the meaning of life. Creation. We were created and we go on to create. Further growing, learning, expanding. Life is creation.
As a bona fide nihilist, existentialism really irks me. Your mind doesn't make things real.
Fulfillment isn't meaning, but it is tangible and real.
That's basically been my personal life motivation since i stopped being religious and turned towards optimistic existential nihilism.

I just LOVE how this show used "Amazo".

That got a good chuckle out of me. No way Luthor would be so ignorant to proper attire.
The bald jokes from steel create uncontrollable laughter. That just makes it funnier.
Episode was insane to watch, like we're used to seeing the Justice League overcome every challenger thrown their way, but the way Amazo just bulldozes through everything they've got and in the end it's Luthor who saves the day with a therapy session is kind of insane.
This episode was part and parcel of a series of inspirational quotes from which I regularly derive meaning in depression. You gotta stay in the game.

As a Christian my purpose is as simple as to love and to serve, not because "it's the right thing to do" but because we care, love pushes people to improve to grow to lead to hapiness for the future
But seeing other people's interpretation is always food for though
This gives the same vibes as when Bender became a "god" in Futurama and had to deal with the conflict of how much to help. Amazo could easily declare himself god but then he'd have to decide how much he'd help and what would be the ramificiations of answering every prayer or being selective or just not helping at all and ruling through fear

I like it when a cartoon treats its audiende likevfully functioning adults.
Captain atom is living energy, no longer human, so makes sense he can go into space he doesn't have lungs anymore or a living body. just pure energy in a man shaped suit.
Something of note for Fate, his actor also plays a character from The Mummy series. He's the lead Medjai Ardeth. Helps that Oded Fehr has a voice that lends itself to a grandiose presence.
He's a great actor that can frequently run off with a scene, but can also turn those skills towards enhancing the shot instead. He's great in every appearance in ST:DIS too.
My favorite scene from this episode is when the second team begins to attack Amazo. Supergirl is easily deafeated and while we see Fire shocked and even a little bit scared about facing Amazo, here comes Rocket Red, Full throttle and ready to give it everything he got, even tho he clearly cant even make a dent to Amazo. Rocket Red appeared like 2-3 times on the show including this one, but that scene alone made me a fan of him.
I re-watched JL and JLU recently, it's so good man.
It's honestly a crime that DC did not just copy this thing's homework for its Cinematic Universe. They had such a great blueprint for its characterization. Lex Luther in particular is an unabashed villain who is nonetheless very interesting and defined, with this being one of many episodes that demonstrate that. It also gave such great definition to the often underserved characters like Flash, J'onn, and Hawkgirl and gave us what is possibly the best Batman without just making it 'Batman and his extended cast overshadow everything' as DC projects often become now.
I'm sure you've got a dozen things you want to prioritize, but if you want another DCAU thing that could make for a good discussion though might I recommend Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker? That actually might be my favorite use of the Joker in anything.
Whenever I even watch one video or clip of that show I am tempted to binge watch it all again. It is so good!!! Time to get started

Shady, as someone who literally grew up with the DC Animated Universe, please keep making videos in this universe! The very first DC media I ever watched was the invasion of Earth by the White Martians in the first episodes of Justice League, and I've loved the whole universe ever since (except for BrucexBarbara which I hate immensely)

This version of Amazo is my favorite and through him I also questioned my own purpose as a kid and I’m glad other people appreciate this character and this episode “The Return” which is my absolute favorite JLU episode and that’s saying something.

The reason most people love the classics so much is because they bring us back to a time when hero's were hero's. Not just people with powers that act like being heroic is a burden.

Amazo makes a strong counter to Brainiac. Despite claiming to be of a higher intelligence, Brainiac still bases it's entire life on it's programming (Only with the extreme leap in logic of gathering data from a planet, then destroying it so it can no longer advance and create more knowledge to gather), whereas Amazo needs to be taught how to find his own purpose, deviating from Ivo's original programming and becoming borderline nihilistic due to it

Oded Fehr is the voice of Dr. Fate. No the biggest actor, but he was Ardeth Bay in the Mummy movie, he was the O.G. gigolo in Deuce Bigolow. And he was Carlos in Resident Evil 2 and 3. Did some other voice work for what seems to be just animated shows based on comics. I got an ear for voices too. I freaked out when I recognized Robert Englund as a new version of the Scarecrow. Appropriate too
For those who are avid D2 players, Dr. Fate is voiced by the same guy that does Osiris. Really cool since both are related to Egyptian symbolisms and such

Some head cannon for Amazon killing red tornado. It’s clear amazo isn’t trying to kill people who aren’t Luther. And he has telekinesis and can tell if something is alive, which is why he didn’t kill the other members. He probably checked red for life with his telekinesis, didn’t hear biological thoughts, assumed it was a drone, and destroyed him.
I know this could be discredited by John telekinetically talking to red. But do we ever see that. Also I know amazo is also a robot, but it’s different he’s on a higher level.
Amazo's whole existence outside the comics tends to be pretty one and done because he's so OP in principle. 1 episode, sometimes just one scene like the Red Hood movie you mentioned. He's somewhat key in the Crisis on Infinite Earths Part 1 movie, but often it's just "Hey here's this cool android...and they're gone,"

The Terror Beyond (Justice League) and Wake the Dead (Justice League Unlimited) are some of the most emotional and thought provoking episodes from both shows in my opinion. They explore the merit and purpose of faith and the moral implications and conditions for taking a life when there's no other option. A review of both would be awesome 👍

Listening to Mr Krabs as Lex Luther really takes me out of any super villainy this guy's up to.
For real? To me it makes it better... Krabs is the ULTIMATE villain - he's just too enjoyable as a character
My experience is the opposite. Clancy Brown *owns* this role. It's interesting to hear the extreme ends of his acting range because he's equally good at both.

Clancy Brown has played other villain roles far before Mr. Krabs, and plenty more after. The bad guy from Highlander, the guard from Shawshank Redemption, a mook in Flubber, and Baron Praxis in Jak II.

This was one of my favorite episodes. Seeing all of these heroes fighting against one ultimate overpowered threat has always made me nerd out as a kid and I still those type of episodes as an adult.

Always loved this episode and my favorite part is how Amazo didn't destroy Oa just simply teleported it to another dimension because it was in his way. Then when asked if he can move it back, he just DOES. No going back to return it, just simply eyes glow and it's back in it's original place.

Even Molecule Man, who’s not only in the episode, but understands the universe on a molecular level, would’ve been an interesting choice to have dialogue with.
I mean yeah but what you guys are all missing is that AMAZO _chose_ Lex. Because he has so much, and still strives for more. He isn't going to take the advice of Superman or Atom the same way, because they don't have that much. They choose to give all the time, and he hasn't really questioned why that might be fulfilling yet. For all he knows, that's just what lesser people do, while people who have everything they could want do... something else, and he's trying to figure out what.
The answer, of course, is that there is no answer. When you are allpowerful, life has no meaning to you. That's why nobody is. and no matter how rich you get, you always want more, because wanting-more is how we stay alive. It's completely wired in.

Yes I wish we saw where he went after his fight with Grundy. They did show him again in the justice league infinity comics
I love the justice league era of the DCAU brings back characters that had a base level of depth in the earlier appearances, and makes them have some of the most emotional scenes in all of DC, showing a noticeable change since we last saw them.
Not going to lie Grundy made me cry in both his final scenes in a way that made me wish Grundy appeared like that more, since a Zombie with no connection to the monster he used to be lends itself well there.
I don’t know if it’s intentional, but for Lex’s “see where it’s all going” line, it does make sense that he’d lie like this.
Amazo is unstoppable for all we know and could easily become some cosmic dictator if he wanted. If Lex said his purpose was to *determine* where it’s all going, he might accidentally give him the wrong idea. By claiming he just wants to *see* where it’s all going, he’s subtly encouraging Amazo to take a more passive role in the universe, which is about as good as you can get in terms of neutralizing the threat he poses.

I love the episode because it completely show off just how awesome Lex is . Absolutely nails every dialogue check, and even goes so far as to insult a godlike being knowing full well he'll succeed.
Also gotta love John McGinley in this episode. It's a shame they didn't have him on more (Though in my younger years, I thought it was Jeffrey Combs).

3:44 This might just me overthinking it but considering the just saw Amazo pulverize the Green Lantern Core and destroy a planet, shouldn't the League basically be pulling out every member they have? I get the animators can only do so much but if feels like the League isn't taking this as seriously as they should
