Dear Jessa, I came to the comments section only to express my admiration to you. Your explanations are so clear, you're incredibly charmful, completely skillful, and I just love how didáctic and calm you are. Zero arrogance, very mature and an absolutely lovely personality. I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but at least this video of yours contributes against a true sad era of impersonalization through brief and reductionist tutorials about almost anything in RUclips. I mean, the extension of your videos, your naturalness and your charm gives a very pleasant, human vibe. I felt like it was a personal advice tutorial video, not just a generic, synthetized, step-by-step, impersonalized video. Your style of teaching is unique, or at least, extremely uncommon in RUclips. My best regards.

Jessa another great video. I love how you mention all the details and all steps. I really do have much respect to you. Only thing what I do different is that I also desolder shield from flex cable on lcd and clean components underneath. Sometimes that can save you LCD. A lot of time lcd needs backlight change which is not hard to change. Good work.

Speaking from electronics experience, if you measure across a capacitor for continuity or resistance you may get a reading or a short beep depending on how large the capacity of the capacitor is. Your meter is putting out a small voltage DC to the circuit you are measuring and so any capacitors in the device will take a short time to charge up. Most meters will register a continuity beep up to 30-40 ohms so that cap charging up is going to look like a short for enough time in most cases that the meter will see it as a momentary short. One other thing to add to this is many of the more expensive meters use a latching circuit on the continuity tester for the length of one beep so even if your meter only reads under the 30-40 ohms for a micro-second it will audible as a full beep.

    1. Disconnect the battery ASAP
    2. Disassemble the phone
    3. Put the board into distilled water to dissolve any minerals
    4. Put the board into methylated spirits to blow away the water
    5. Let the methylated spirits evaporate (it evaporates quickly), and reassemble

Hi. Thanks for another great informative video.
You mentioned that one of the shields was harder to remove, due to a higher melting point solder and I was wondering if it would be any easier if you were to use a board heater on the underside, like you get on BGA repair stations that pre-heat to about 150 Deg C?

I too am an admirer of your skills, candor, and effort for this free info. I'm not an electronics expert. How do we know if it's safe to just remove a capacitor and not replace it? I think that's what you did for this repair or maybe you replaced them and I couldn't see. Thanks for all of this. I just ordered my microscope -- not as fancy as yours. I went to S.U. so I might want to visit again and take your course.

Yeah my phone was in a broken lifeproof case underwater for approximately 10 minutes. First thing I did was hit the home button. Phone heated up, probably short circuiting. Dried it when I got home and put it in a container full of silica gel. Set up an appointment at the Apple Store for Sunday. I guess I'll see if it turns on tomorrow or if I'm going to have to get it repaired. Funny thing is that the exact same thing happened to me 2 years ago. Had to buy the early upgrade last time. This time though, I want to get the phone before I go on vacation and am willing to buy a replacement if necessary.

Hi Jes. Thanks for the time you put into your videos. One quick question (not questioning your knowledge) - when you say if there is a short to ground and you get continuity on both ends of the components that means the phone won't turn on? I've done two water damaged iPhone 6's in the last two weeks both with this short to ground fault and both phones turn on and work perfectly fine?

I remember leaving my Game Boy on the swing and the rain came... I dried it on the heater. Game boy works to this day after that but I know it's probably due to bigger components(corrosion has to be much bigger to make critical damage). I will take it apart and see if I can find any marks of water damage. Just for fun.

Rice worked for me. My iPhone was soaked in water for about 2-5 minutes in sink. It was iPhone plus with a plastic cover. The phone was dead. I was planning to buy a new one at the moment, but my mother immediately put the phone in rice and told me that she rekindled 3 phones before. Honestly, I did not believe her. Guess what, it took less than 10 minutes before my phone went back on itself. There were some problems: the hole for the ear piece was plugged by rice, the speaker phone did not work, the Bluetooth did not awake. But the WiFi and other functions worked. About 2 hours later in rice, speaker phone worked. Next day morning, the Bluetooth came back. Rice works.

She dropped in a gutter and it was boot looping.
Turned it off. Shook as much water out as I could out the sim card slot. Was going to drop it in a container with dessicant, but saw this.
Next morning I picked up a kit from iFixit and opened it up with a hair dryer.
Was a bit nervous I'd break something, but everything looked good cept a few potential mineral deposits on MB. Pulled it and soaked in 99.9% alcohol, let it dry.. and like it never happened...
Wishing I didn't have to reopen it to replace the seal in 2 days once it comes in the mail, but I think I'll be fine.

One thing I learned in college was when you use a meter to test a component while it's still in circuit you're testing all components around it in the schematic. You could have a resistor and a capacitor parallel in a circuit. If you test the capacitor it's going to show resistance.

Incredible video Jessa. I've worked at Fluke for years and have worked as a technician so I really respect what you are doing here. Honestly a lot of companies got out of board test because of the extreme miniaturization you're dealing with. We had digital testers that probed legs along the IC, we had probes that even probed those original Motorola and Intel CPUs. I'm just fascinated by your videos......being that I'm coming from the test world where we basically threw in the towel on trying to fix devices like you're fixing! By the way, I'll say it again thank you for standing up to Apple. It really infuriates me they ban you from their forums for trying to help their customers. What ever happened to common decency? Ooooooh, it boils the blood.

Also, what temperature do you use with your Crest Ultrasonic? Louis's video said 60-65 degrees for macbook logic boards...is it the same for iPhone boards?

Now off to a practical thought. Most people do not have Isopropanol or Isopropyl alcohol at home on the shelf. So here is the question. What do you think of using concentrated windshield wiper fluid as a substitute? As far as I know the only issue might be the coloring agent used in it which does leave a bit of a residue. Personally I use it as a screen cleaner and general cleaning agent around apparatuses.

Is it necessary to also replace the components that you took off? Or will only taking them off solve the shortage problem?

Would it be worth using water protective resin on all the boards and components at this stage to protect from future water ingress? My local electrical boffin did this to my water damaged Volvo car computer.

hmmm that give a idea why not put the full pcb of any phone into epoxy and only exposing the anttena and cpu for cooling

Number one, cost. A distant number two may be heat distribution. Conformal coating tech introduces a lot of extra testing and cooling requirements.

instant rice I say and feed a supply voltage double the actual required voltage ...surely it will provide a smoky trail to one or more defective components which should cook the insant rice

my note 3 hit the water for a second with an otter box cover. took it apart, could not see any water but washed the mother board with alcohol . it works then the screen freezes goes black. dried it with hair dryer after the alcohol. now I think the screen is OK cuz it works then it doesn't. i think the screen or the part that make the screen work is probably bad. not sure what to do. I hate to buy another this one has worked great. any Ideas? Thank You, Matt

Not being into electronics at all, I wonder how the removal of two components doesn't affect the functionality of the device. Why are they used then in the first place? Can somebody perhaps enlighten me about that?

    • @ibjessa
      @ibjessa 8 лет назад +6

There are a lot of components on the board that have a minor practical function. It is always best to put them back and conform to the original design. Since this is my personal phone I left those off, but if I ever noticed a cell reception deficit or dropped calls I'd put them back.

+Jessa Jones Thanks for the explanation :). Though I'm still really astonished that the device is able to cope with that o.O . BTW I love your videos and believe it or not actually find them entertaining :D. It fascinates me to see somebody do something they are really good at ;). Also you convinced me of the trustworthiness of independent repair which I used to be skeptical about. Thanks for that ;).

Some times these components are included in the device so that they don't interfere with other devices. Hypothetically: How would you feel if your device interfered with someones pacemaker giving much pain or even death due to you removing a component? Your suck it and say way of just removing cap's and not replacing them if the phone works is not good practise in the same way as just putting the phone in rice. All the cap's are there for a reason!!!

Well this taught me a fair bit about water damage and everything. I too went swimming with a phone for 30 minutes before realizing that it was still in my pocket. Suffice to say, I attempted the rice method. though i did take it all apart. Luckily it was a fairly inexpensive phone, but still really bad luck with phones for a while.

never have a water damaged phone before.. but does caps actually get shorted because of water? it make no sense to me since those ceramic cap are not affected by water, I think the corrosion is what actually doing the short and when you remove the cap then it get removed together

My iphone 5S got dunked good today and I slung as much water out ass I could immediately. I've looked at your video. I removed the 2 screws and got it open but it looks like I have a flat wire? going to the fingerprint button so instead of opening all the way like your video shows, it only opens an inch or so before the wire becomes tight. Any advise would be appreciated! Thanks.

+robb5706 you're on the right track! Use tweezers to remove the little bracket that clips over the home button connector and then disconnect the home button and screen will come up to show you the battery shield --unscrew that and pop off battery. Go to iFixit.com for detailed guides on how to do this. You can follow instructions from there to take out logic board and clean with 99% alcohol and a toothbrush and you'll be on the best path to DIY water damage repair!

I tried to turn it on, and charge it. Am I fucked? or is there still a chance I can get it to work. I didn't know doing that would make it worse. At the time it stopped working I didn't know it was water damage, so i tried those things to see if it would make it work again.
