Hello iPad Rehab, good video as always. For the case that you only need to save the information i think that you can manually light the screen and do the backup. The way I do it is solder 2 wires to the 1st and 3rd pin of the backlight on the screen, disconect the filter right next to the annode pin on the connector, just in case that there is a short on the other side of the filter and isolate the voltaje on the screen. After doing that feed the two wires with 17V with a power supply and that way you can temporary have access to the phone. It works for me, hopefully can help you too. Regards

just wondering if you ever worked on an iphone 6s backlight problem where the pads where missing on one of the filters? is it possible to do a jumper connection? do you have any advice in the matter?
I recently replaced my backlight filter as shown on your video. It all worked perfectly. When I tried to take a picture using the front camera and when the home button was pressed to take a picture the backlight filter blew up again. Have you ever came across a problem like this and what was the solution? Thanks
sounds like bad parts
Solder blobs are a manufacturing defect, most phones have some sort of solder issues due to placement or parts preventing proper wave soldering or components are just too close together preventing complete soldering.
If my iphone gets wet and has the backlight problem, will the two problems be fixed if the backlight is repaired?

Two questions, I'm working on an i6 w/ backlight right now and removed the short from one of the caps (as suggested), replaced driver and diode and small cap between diode & coil...still no backlight at all. If coil was bad which I'm replacing today, wouldn't I still get some dim image?

I've fixed many backlight problems like these when there is a short circuit on the PP_LCM_BL_ANODE line, and I always find that the diode D1501 got blown and most of the times the coil L1503 looks like the one in this vid. I change both of them, remove the shorted capacitor and problem solved. I rarely get a faulty U1502
+Leon Stacey it can be either the C1505 or C1530 or C1531. Any of these can get shorted and make damage to the diode, the coil and sometimes the IC
which side of the diode is the short on?
That line has zero resistance to ground and you've taken off all three caps and the driver ic? I would expect that from a prior repair attempt with exposed ground at the filter that is making contact---I would look wherever the circuit was burned most for a mechanical connection to ground plane

Great video, i now just need to brush up on my soldering skills. I was wondering if you could shed some light on an issue im facing, i've repaired around 500 iphone 6 screens and out of those 500 i've had 4 backlight fail on me. The issue is these happen around 48 hours after the screen has been fitted. I always use ESD mats/wrist bands and have never mixed the shield screws so i know this is not the cause. I am using China made LCD's could this be the issue ie drawing too much current?
I am very lost as i thought this issue would happen as soon as i reconnect the battery and turn it on?

No it doesn't say that lol, that's what I did in order to reach the screw on the power button, but while doing that I scratched the motherboard and the screen never turned on again, so searching on RUclips I found your video, great information by the way! But I don't know why the screen does not show any signs of life!

I don't have any shorts but no backlight either. It worked just fine until I reballed the baseband today. I guess the heat messed something up or is it the driver ic?

Is it possible or have you heard of the front camera on an iPhone 6 not working as a result of the heat that's generated at the time a back-light goes out? It wasn't confirmed the front camera was working when the back-light went out, so the issue could have been caused by the back-light repair. The phone was taken back to the same repair shop who replaced a resister/filter and the camera started working again. But it only worked for a day. You can access the camera app and controls, but the display is black for the front camera. What do you think?
in order to troubleshoot this you need to have full details of what was done at the backlight repair and what resistor/filter was replaced. My guess would be the backlight repair had heat on the board near backlight chip that lifted one or more of the small components under silicone near fcam connector. It sounds like one was put back--troubleshoot the rest.
iPad Rehab turns out that after re-soldering all the fcam components, it started working and is still working.

I got an iPhone 6 with no backlight issue
So I removed the backlight diode (that seems burnt)
Now I'm measuring the anode pad on the board (while phone is on, the screen is on and set it to full brightness)
and it shows me 3-4V
What conclusion I can get with this?
Shouldn't I be measuring 22V on that line (PP_WLED_LX)?
no, that line will always measure low if there is no load. you need to put the diode back and go from there.

A shorted circuit does NOT imply a short to ground. If simply means there is a very low resistance current path or no resistance path through or around a component. That component does not necessarily have a connection to ground.
You make excellent videos but every time it's about an iPhone 6 I watch mine with a bit more anxiety. It currently works perfectly and I love it and it has about a year of AppleCare left but still...
You should probably upgrade when you can. I think that iPhone is the most trouble prone from Apple.

I have the same problem of the LCD not working. I can leave it for a day and it will come on again sometimes and then after a while it will go off. I can see that the screen is working while under a light but the LCD doesn't work.
Where should I start to look as this doesn't seem like a burnt/blown part.

I had changed diode. Coil. Back light driver chip And the capacitors near CPU which were shorted. Now my mother board. Heats up near display chestnut and the there is a voltage leakage of1.75 volts. I have similar issues with 4 mother boards.

That diode could become shorted (normal failure mode for diodes) which would then pull more amps through the circuit than it was designed for causing another component in line to short to ground
Watch the video. Then answer this. "The backlight diode can not itself become shorted because it has _____ ______ ___ ______."
+iPad Rehab "no path to ground" yes but I'm saying the diode could just go bad itself and when diodes go bad they fail shorted, thus this could (in theory not saying this happened) draw more current than is normally there taking out the ic and or caps in the line.
+mrsemifixit NO! "When diodes go bad they fail shorted". Think here and tell me---how they hell can something with no path to ground ever become shorted to ground? If I hit it with a hammer does that give it a path to ground? No. If I light it on fire does that give it a path to ground? No. If I put a piece of tinfoil between the diode and the frame does that give it a path to ground? Yes. So unless you are regularly opening iPhones filled with tin foil, there is no path to ground, ain't gonna be a path to ground, and the diode will not magically make a path to ground no matter what happens to it.
The diode itself will never be shorted to ground. Ever.

+Jessa Jones Lol think there's a misunderstanding here, I'm not saying it could be shorted to ground I'm saying it can become shorted (not to ground just shorted as in become a piece of wire) and that could then draw more current to other components and potentially fry the ic or caps in that line

What you are suggesting is "maybe the diode fails in a way that the normally low resistance is even less". That is not a short. And that is not how a diode fails. You can't make a resistor become a wire. You can't make a diode become a wire.
These are the kinds of things we talk about in Practical Board Repair school. What are these components? What do they do? How do they fail?
All of these are the foundation for troubleshooting and diagnosis in board repair.

I have an iPhone 6s plus with a screen issue. The iPhone powers on, makes sound when clicking home button or when plugging it in. iTunes recognizes it as well if that matters at all, but the issue is that the phones screen just stays blue/black the whole time. When you press the power button the screen will turn on (blue-black color) then when you press the power button again it will turn off. The LCD cable isn't cut and doesn't look damaged but the screen isn't emitting any picture or background just the blue/black screen. Any ideas?

when you took off the shield and you were taking fill off ,that capacitor moved from the trace ,may be you missed it because of divided concentration
Not sure I understand---it is common for components to become dislodged when removing the silicone coating or underfill. A shorted capacitor has become a wire. It has nothing to do with whether or not it is currently secured to its solder pads. ???

Dear iPad Rehab, love you work, it is great. Hope you could help with a little advise and where to look at with my iPhone 6. It can not be restored but restore process starts fine, recognizes iphone and shows s/n. Tried many many times, swapped board with different screens, housings, batteries ..etc. DFU mode, latest itunes, other laptop, usb ports, tried apps to kick out recovery mode, - every time same story, it stuck on apple logo with spinning wheel and itunes shows us "waiting for iphone".
I have other donor logic board iphone6. If there is a hardware issue, micro parts can be used to build 1 working board? Going to take to local repair shop and explain them an issue. I will appreciate if you could point to the specific hardware problem, what has to be replaced. I see you have got massive experiece in it. I'll appreciate help very much.

Hi, we also did a lot of backlight fixes on iPhone 6, and we also found that some of them had small solder balls between the filtering caps, but not on all of them. The problem seems to be the filter caps that go bad, we had to replace a few of them. Currently we have a iPhone 6 that came in with backlight problem, we desoldered the shield and cleared some solder balls between the caps. After the backlight came back on and we tested it for a day. After a few days the client comes back in with a intermitent backlight problem, so we remove the shield again, and replace the driver, but now the phone refuses to start, it draws 0.09A from the power supply, but no power on, and on charging it jumps around a lot. We mesured the main voltages coming from the PM but all seems to be in place, we removed the driver but still no power on. Maybe you cand give a pice of advice? We used a lead solder and did not overheat the area, also we have changed over 30 pcs and had no problems.

I bet you nudged a pull-up resistor near backlight driver ic when you changed it. Look hard at tiny resistors near there
+Jessa Jones Hi again, yes i saw that the backlight driver is controlled via i2c but the problem now is not the driver the phone does not turn on anymore... As i sayd the phone does not boot anymore, its drowing 0.09A but no boot, mesured all the main voltages from the PM and all looks ok.
My guess is that you nudged a pullup resistor like I said. Go look. I bet you'll find one lifted, shifted, or missing.
Hi, after having the same problem with another one, we managed to get to the bottom of the issue. Its not a overheating problem, so the CPU is still ok. We found that if the soldering process is not perfect you get a short between C1 and D1 pads on the backlight IC, that in turn sends Vcc_main voltage through the PP1V8 line, this line is used for pull-up resistors in I2C and SPI interfaces. The current board has a short between PP1V8 and GND. The problem is that the PP1V8 line is used by a number of IC's and also there are caps that are rated 4V, so tomorrow we will try to remove the caps to see if the short disapears. We have supplied 1.8V from the power supply directly to the rail and the phone boots normaly.

hello, Did a backlight fix yesterday replaced the IC and the 5 caps above the ics and the diode (which originally had a whole in it) backlight now works but i cannot adjust brightness at all. its half brightness no matter where the slider is. Is there anything i can do about this?

Haha, I'm not proud to admit but theres been a few of these backlights kick my tail for hours and I finally give up, strip the entire circuit off the board and replace the whole mess.

When I recorded this, I did do the backlight driver ic for one of them in the video, then the next day did the other one. The first one should be in this video unless something happened during encoding.

i think you should not be changing components that have no hope of actually being the cause of a short, and instead learn what a short is, and what types of components can be the cause of a short.

I can pick up a piece of paper off the ground an it can say "Kick a cat or you're fired" but that doesn't pertain to me. It is a private agreement between two other parties. If they don't like the fact that Joe Blow shared their schematics, then take it up with Joe Blow. What I have is just information that may or may not even be factual. You can't believe everything you read on the internet!

Thank you kindly! Have you ever come across a Note 5 that doesn't respond to the S-Pen touch? All s-pen options are turned on in the s-pen settings menu.....and the device recognizes removal and insertion. It brings up the blank screen notepad and the air command menu.....just doesn't respond to the pen touch. I have 3 pens here, all same same. If you have any ideas what I might want to look for, I'd be grateful.

Most of the vibrator wires are insulated, try a different one
