    Apple really should be doing something about this rampant epidemic of touch ic failure on the iPhone 6/6+. Is it really that hard to train people to replace the touch ics? Let's find out. Here I invite a local teen who has never even seen the inside of an iPhone to try his hand at touch ic replacement---and it's a success!

    LOL. I recently hired someone to help me with screen repair while I work on other things. I could of hired someone with experience, but chose this guy because he is a fan of yours & Louis's videos. He broke a tester backlight and I told him you broke it, you fix it. 1st time I let him on the equipment, he nailed it : ) I left to the restroom as not to make him nervous and bam, 1st time no instruction. Never soldered. Watches me while I work and your guys's videos and nailed it.

    Have you ever seen an iPhone 5S BSOD while it was on the setup screen. I found one on eBay that said it was crashing to a blue and black screen, but it is at the set up screen and they said they have had no issues since then. Is it possible it was a software issue?

    Hey Jessa, your shirt is wrong. Reword it to say "It's almost never the coil", then you got it.
    I'm an electrical engineer and a harley -davidson motorcycle tech of about 40 years plus I've worked on cars for close to the same amount of time. In an older ignition system, (similar to a boost converter) the ignition coil is almost never to blame in an ignition system failure. But, on very rare occasions, it is not just a culprit, it's the ONLY culprit.

    Hey Jessa,
    Any reason you don't use a small vacuum suction pen to lift chips straight up (obviously ones that aren't underfilled) to avoid tweaser slips and component displacement?

    • @RyanDanielowski
      @RyanDanielowski 6 лет назад

      Simon that might be a good option, but anything for a price to performance ratio might prove it to be more than needed if you can Just do it manually? I can't say as that is why she chooses to do it the way she does, but maybe it might help you.

    When replacing a bga chip, what is a good temperature to set the hot air gun? Thanks

    • @JessaJones
      @JessaJones  7 лет назад +1

      +Jesse Alford you have to just experiment with your own setup. Stated temp and actual temp are really really variable

    • @JessaJones
      @JessaJones  6 лет назад +1

      Somewhere between 300-450c depending on the job. This always differs. iPad Rehab highly recommends the Quick 861DW bit.ly/2xGDTXo for a cheap, affordable, powerful hot air station with an easy interface. It will remove all different types of chips without a problem, unlike weaker stations that can't stay hot enough long enough to do the job.

    • @RyanDanielowski
      @RyanDanielowski 6 лет назад

      Jesse Alford as Jessa replied, stated temp and airflow mean nothing when put next to actual time playing with your setup. Remember, never field day a new tool on a customer board, always get a feel for tolerance on donor boards, etc

  • @simonrees4631
    @simonrees4631 8 лет назад

    Do you have to replace with new chips, I thought the issue was with the solder balls fracturing due to lack of underfill, could you not just replace the old ones after cleaning them up and re-soldering? Or am I missing something - Thanks.

    • @ibjessa
      @ibjessa 8 лет назад +1

    I am definitely going to start doing that stuff... Expensive when you start up for the equipment (mind you, might start at a much lower grade though, and build up toward more expensive stuff), but probably one of the least expensive investment to start an actual business. I am pretty manual and a fast learner and your videos are very explicative; and if that guy off the street can do it on a top dollar cell phone and not screw it up, I probably could. Good job buddy on your first attempt, must be fucking rewarding to see it worked :)

      Mario Dupuis, I have to say a few words. Since I became aware of jessa, iPad rehab, Louiss, and Jason of sts, I have had a remarkable journey. I've even got a couple good friends taking serious steps of their own. This kind effort requires many different hats, and there are some short cuts that can be made, tool wise at least. I will tell you honestly that you do not NEED the tools THEY say are good. But I will also say that they have tried other tools. What they suggest to you, they would suggest to eachother. I bought almost everything I am using based off the recommendations they make, and they are SERIUOSLY saving you time, tears, and heart ache. Again, some tools you can roll the dice with, as I have. But everything I buy that THEY recommend, very truly is a boon of gold.

    When you resolder the new chips in using hot air, how comes that the little resistors next to it are not blown away. Wouldn't it make sense to put some copper scotch on top of them to avoid them getting blown away (I mean something like www.sparkfun.com/products/10561 ) - just to make the heat go away?

    I like Jessa's remarks about the trailer park. And "you picked up a dude". Teaching young ones these types of skills can change their lives and 'keep them out of trouble". Otherwise a slave to Apples repair service. They wanted to charge $260 to replace the camera in my iPhone 5s. And it is probably a factory defect. I will do it myself with a new $10 camera from eBay.

      We use NC-559-V2-TF flux which can be purchased here: mailin.repair/amtech-nc-559-v2-30-cc-16160.html It is the best stuff there is. You can also get it with a plunger & needle tip for a small fee.

    Hi Jessa - great site. I have discovered that Inventec/Amtech have a UK distributer. Insat International. They are selling the NC-559-V2 flux on ebay so I guess this must be the genuine stuff. You can get a smaller syringe (10cc) for £16-99 and free postage so cheaper and quicker for UK viewers than buying from the US. Hope this helps.

    Hi Jessa, I have a question: I work for a cellphone repair shop. Last two weeks, the first time I changed iphone 6s plus LCD, everything good at begining, but next day, customer came back with half screen was dark. When I opened the phone again, I saw on the top of connector, one of resistor was burned. I guess, I did something wrong, therefore, I brought it to apple to fix it(I put back original screen, and took back new screen). They charged me $359.XXX(and my boss said he will refund it me, but I thought I did it wrong, therefore, i said I would be responsible for that). Now, I bought a Iphone 6s plus with cracked screen, I used the previous screen to put on my phone, this time, I did very carefully, once again, my phone burn out exactly like previous. I told my boss about that, he called his friends(in cellphone repair business too) and they said maybe screen is defect and cause it filter burn out. What do you think?
    Thanks a lot

      @JessaJones  8 лет назад +1

      I think you plugged in a screen without disconnecting the battery and burned up the backlight filter. Totally repairable.

      I'm 100000000000 sure I have disconnected battery(turned off and then disconnected battery).

    • @JessaJones
      @JessaJones  8 лет назад +1

      If you're sure the battery was off the whole time---both when disconnecting and then reconnecting the screen, then the screen would be the next thing i'd think. I'd test for a short within the backlight of the screen itself. Something shorted one of the backlight lines to ground, who knows what it was.

    Weird question: Have you ever run into any iphone 6 that literally caught fire? I just received a couple iphone 6 with antenna circuit literally fryed. After further inspection the GPS chip literally exploded and put a hole in the logicboard, wifi antenna melted, standoff near wifi antenna burned, dock connector antenna area burned and also that small antenna near the camera melted. Screen backlight melted and fryed as well. I've worked on many phones and have never seen this before. Quite scary actually. Any idea what could have caused this? I can send you some photos if you'de like.

      Yes, this happens all the time. Mark used to think it was a sport to watch C5202_RF turn red and glow like an ember on the water damaged phones after battery was connected.

      @rootsdat 8 лет назад

      +iPad Rehab funny thing is, the phones i have are not water damaged and never have been worked on before. both absolutely torched on all antenna bands. That small blue inductor coil burned a hole right through the logicboard near the wifi antenna.

    being nervous is natural... BUT, concentrate on the instructions. don't understand the instructions? stop and ask.
    a great teacher (like Jessa) can help you much better if they have input.
    @23:00 for example, the instructions were repeated to hold the tip of the iron for longer in the problematic spot, what does the student do? repeat the previous move in an energetic effort to solve the problem w/o following the instructions :}

    Damn, patience patience patience when a stubborn blob of soldier just doesn't want to come off that board with flux!!!!! It drives me nuts. That is where I get my trusty Oryx soldier vacuum pump out and I suck the snot off the board. It is what I affectionately call, my Snot Sucker.
    Jessa, may I ask, what flux you use?

    • @RyanDanielowski
      @RyanDanielowski 6 лет назад

      I think she might be using one of two flux, the stuff rossman suggests, or quick chip. I am curious if solder wick would have helped in the specific scenario

    What the hell is wrong with Apple? Samsung has 36 phones out of 2.5 million with problems and they do a world wide recall, Apple has had 10000+ phones with IC disease and they won't do a thing about it and make their customers pay out of pocket to get it fixed! Disgraceful!!

    Are you trying to prove that a kid with no experience can do this? He made lots of mistakes which you had to correct him on and take over, and you held his hand (not literally, judging by his hand steadiness) the whole way. He can't do this. No more than I can repair my car engine, without a professional telling me what to do and fixing my mistakes.
    What's the point...
    Frustrating because people will be fooled into thinking they can do it, when they don't have $1000's of equipment and an expert pulling the strings. Love your work otherwise Jessa.

    • @JessaJones
      @JessaJones  8 лет назад +2

      The point is that it is more instructional to watch someone new struggle than to watch a deft expert. I'd argue that this video does the opposite of what you imply---it makes you think "that looks hard" In comparison, videos where experienced experts swiftly swap chips with no mistakes make you think "that looks easy" This video is just what came to mind. This kid is a family friend who spent a day in the shop. I wanted to see if I could actually teach a complete newbie to phones in general to do a difficult job just for fun.

      iPad Rehab I like your approach, but I also like another aspect. The young man ways to do some surgeon worm. A cheap pcb is only worth so much. Currently, a body versus a cadaver is completely different. While the young man can develop a skill that is transversal to both means, he can also learn to appreciate a high-skill trade and, if he finds himself so inclined, might prefer a different profession. That is good on all accounts above, since we need more of both in this world as it stands.
