  • My old filter is quiet but dispenses water very slowly. The new every drop filters make a loud pulsing sound and spits water out. I've run about 10 gallons through each filter and it doesn't work any better.Any idea what could be wrong?

Holy Shit! Finally, got it fixed-water wouldn't dispense and no ice. In my case it was the small pin on the end of the water filter (where the water inlet and outlet are) that activates the bypass(?). Anyway, it was too long. I snipped 1/16th off the end of the pin with wire cutters and that's all that was needed,,,,,,After buying a new water solenoid thinking that was the problem, tracing the water flow through the whole fridge, taking apart each connection to make sure the water would flow/no obstruction in the water line, and a few more things. BTW !!!! the water solenoid was $99 from whirlpool, $96 from another online parts store and $29 through Amazon for the EXACT same part-same brand, part #, same manufacturer.
Thanks to whoever suggested snipping the pin a little and yes my whirlpool ice and water dispenser works without a filter in it. Thanks to all of you for your suggestions.

Steve Zelev: Thank you for posting the pin clip idea. I had been working on my filter, trying several iterations of the "paper towel trick" without success. Examining the new and old filters side by side, I could see no visible external difference. Swapping the old filter, water flowed fine. New filter, NO GO. -Clipping about 1/16 of an inch off the activation pin made the new filter start working at full flow. Thank you so much for posting (or re-posting as the case may be). Everything is now copasetic! 😊

Hi Folks I would like to try this as well . Where exactly is the activation pin located ? Is it the small needle sticking out at the top of the filter on the outer edge ? Also to take off 1/16 of an inch can i just use a filer and file it ? Please help.

THANK YOU! The pin trick worked like a charm- I kept stuffing more and more paper towels and for the water to flow I had to put more than the filter door could handle. I got so frustrated that I screwed the door shut to force it. This saves me hours of pain I would have experienced in the future. Thank you!

I came here because my whirlpool water filter door kept popping open after I installed a new filter. I've used the same every drop filters, changing every six months, for the last four years and everything has been fine. But today, TWO brand new filters kept causing the filter door to spring open when we would attempt to dispense water, and water would pour out everywhere from the filter compartment.
I didn't see anything here from anyone experiencing a similar issue, but I did take note of how many people were trying this "paper towel trick". Even though the thought of inserting MORE space between the filter and the filter door seemed illogical in my situation, I decided to give it a try. And, it worked! Geez. (I folded about 1/4 of a full paper towel in half over and over until it was about the size of a half-dollar, and stuck it in right before I shut the filter door)
I suspect that the change in water pressure when dispensing water was causing the filter to pop out. But the addition of the paper towel must add the additional space needed to create a better fit or seal, and the system is now able to stay closed and function properly.
I hope this information is helpful to others!

IF THE PAPER TOWEL TRICK STOPPED WORKING READ THIS!
So the paper towel trick worked for my fridge for 5 minutes but then stopped and I couldn’t seem to get the right amount of layers. So I found an easier trick.
NEW TRICK: All you need is a tiny piece of tape and a water hose rubber gasket/seal. Tape the seal to the back of your filter, replace the filter and close the filter door as normal. That should work a lot more effectively without the guesswork of folding enough paper towels.
PERMANENT SOLUTION: For those with older fridges like me. I think our permanent solution is to eventually replace the filter head in the fridge. Either that or whirlpool has figured out a way to make us all upgrade refrigerators by slightly changing the size of filters so our older model fridges aggravate us to death.

I had purchased 2 from amazon as well. They wouldn't dispense water at all. The old filter functioned normally. I tried the paper towel trick and now have water with the new filter. However I have to wonder if the additional depth could also be bypassing the filter as the pressure is exactly like the pressure when there is no filter installed. Does this ring true with anyone one else?

I've tried the folded paper towel trick and the extra thikness causes the filter door to pop open. There looks to be a bit of a bend to the door latch (hook) so I may have to buy a new door just so it holds the filter and paper towel "fix" in place.

For everyone that tried the paper towel trick and it didnt work, I partially closed my water supply valve to the fridge and the reduced pressure/flow seems to make the noise stop. The newer filters seem to allow much more flow than the older ones. In bypass mode my system still made the noise until I partially closed the valve. It still makes a slightly loud noise at the very beginning but after that 1/16th of a second it's fine. Guess my water pressure is too high for this refridgerators water filteration system.

I had this problem with an everydrop (3) filter. I cut up and old drivers license and duct taped it on the top of the angled part (left side). Top meaning towards the fridge front. Works like a charm.

    • @mcoguy72
      @mcoguy72 4 года назад

Zack Russell are you talking about the little tab piece that sticks out from the cylinder of the filter body? You taped the piece of the driver’s license to the “base” of that triangle or the long part? I guess the base as that’s what faces the front of the fridge. So silly we have to do these things. I get a trickle of water or no water when the filter is locked in place, perfectly fine water flow if it’s unlocked and out of place by just a hair, but then need something (like a driver’s license?) to keep it from popping out lol. Hoping you check this thread still.

I have this same issue with mine. My fridge uses the #3 filter. The blue filters made by PUR worked just fine no problems at all, when it came time to replace it in 2018, instead of having the blue PUR filters, they have these white everydrop filters. So I chose the same model that’s for my fridge, installed it and flushed it. It worked fine for 2 years until the pandemic happened. It started to make the same noise. I assumed the filter was clogged so I replaced with a new everydrop filter. But then couple weeks later it started acting up again. I was confused as this was a new filter not even a month old. My mom then found a video that said to take the filter and re-install it, so I did the same thing and it worked, but the filter always acts up sometimes making a slight whistle when dispensing water and making the same clicking, so I kept on doing the same thing taking it out and re-installing it. Until today, I had to put up a bigger fight with it, I took out the filter and re-installed it about 4 times until I took it out and ran some water through it from the tap. Re-installed it and it worked. Then I said enough is enough, I had enough with these everydrop filters. I’m choosing a different brand until they start using the tried and true blue PUR filters. I still don’t know why whirlpool hasn’t done anything about it.

After paying top dollar for inline filters several times a year, we pulled the original filter and installed a 5 year inline filter into the hoses in the back of the fridge. Voila- cost dropped from $400 over 5 years to less than $40. And no clogged filter.

I switched from the everydrop filter to the HD # 4 ( whirlpool) filter. I actually have a kitchen aide fridge, but that’s irrelevant here. The HD filter is a lot lighter in weight and may not “pull away” from the fitting as much. This is where the paper towel came into play. I knew it had to be the filter as my bypass plug stopped the vibration/noise as well. Hope this helps someone sometime.

All of this seems to suggest the filter is a fraction smaller than the original and it needs to be pressed in further for it to seat properly and work.

Kevin Kinyon I tried everything and never got mine fixed. I think it's bad filters and the manufacturer could careless. You could run an inline filter behind the fridge. This is a perfect example of planned obsolescence

so I just got a brand new filter for my whirlpool fridge from Amazon. I got to replace it, arrows lined up and filter door closes and everything. I go to run the 5 gallons and it starts making a noise like it has a hernia from doing some heavy lifting. Also, no flow.
I go to remove the filter to try to reinstall it, and water comes gushing out the filter door. Wtf. So this has never happened in the last 5 yrs I've had this thing.
I come to RUclips before I call a guy and see mention of the "paper towel trick". I try it, it fuckin works! No fridge complaining like it's got covid noise and Flow is back to normal. I'm guessing they're making the filter size wonky for some reason to fuck with us.
Anyways, Thanks for saving me money, RUclips citizens.

I am going to install a needle valve in the supply line to the back of the refrigerator. They're only about $7. It might be possible to throttle flow to reduce the filter flow rate therefore preventing the cavitation.

Try trimming a few millimeters off the centering peg on the bottom of the filter and trim the corner off as well. Mine worked great after doing that. The peg might stop filter from seating all the way in.

I tried the paper towel trick and it did not work for me. At most I got a trickle, which told me that the two inputs weren't seating all the way in to the filter head. So I trimmed that center post about an 1/8 of an inch (maybe slightly more I cut just a little bit off at a time until it worked properly) and reinstalled the filter and water came pouring out! FIXED! Didn't even need to put the paper towel in. Thank you Mike for adding your comment because it was the only one on here that worked for me.

I have been having the same issue, and tried the paper towel tip too. It seemed to work a bit, but then the water dispenses slow again. Also my ice maker is not getting any water into it, and it’s not making ice. This all happened when I changed the filter. I have been through 3 filter (2 from EveryDrop) and I’m still having issues with the ice maker and water pressure not being as strong as months back. Any suggestions? Thanks

I just went back and added the filter the new filter I had before the EveryDrop brand. I still have to do the paper towel trick, but this one actually works and produces ice. Strange thing is I had the same kind that I used last year (2 pack) and the first unit worked perfectly (no paper towel needed). I think I may just go back to Sears and find the older brands I have used in the past. Thanks

I have bought 4 filters. The first 2 from amazon they didn't work. I thought maybe it was a an aftermarket problem. Then I ordered one from walmart it didn't work. I thought maybe it was the wrong filter. (After a smart*#s comment from my husband).lol

I wonder if the filter is defective. I had bought the same filter 2 or 3 times before, and never had this problem, only the noise problem. Has anybody encountered the same problem as well ?

Each of the two extended tubes in the filter (where water enters and leaves the filter) have a slanted end in the center designed to push in a perpendicular direction a small plastic pin that opens the water valves to the filter. In my case, it seems that when I installed the new filter, it bent back one of the pins instead of pushing it in. This, of couse, damaged the part where the filter connects. Fortunately, the fridge dispenses water without the filter installed, so I'll fix this with an external line filter.

We have the exact same fridge with the exact same problem. I can not figure out why the new filters don't work like the old blue filters. Have you figured out what the problem might be yet?!?

My frig uses the #3 filter and I had not been replacing the filer as recommended. Actually left the last one in since 2016. Some time in the last two years, the water dispenser would chatter when dispensing water so we stopped using it. (Sounded like the inlet valve chattering to me as the ice maker water valve did not chatter when the ice maker filled.) The ice maker continued to work and I could hear it when filling. This week we ran out of ice and realized that the ice maker had stopped making ice. I see that the ice maker water inlet sluice has a frozen plug of ice. Removing the plug did not help as a new plug developed over a week. I decided to order a new water valve to fix the abandoned water dispenser and hopefully the ice maker fill problem (this all might be the result of the 7 year old filter). Unfortunately, I did not test the water dispenser after removing the old filter when I installed the new water valve. After I replaced the water valve, the water dispenser dispenses water but at a slow rate without the old filter (15 to 20 seconds to fill 8oz glass). After about 30 minutes, the ice maker cycled and I see that the ice maker is full of water. Deciding to put in a new filter (I can't find the original PUR #3) I purchased the #3 every drop filter and installed it but it popped out. On one insertion attempt I heard a chattering and water flowing (possibly into the filter as none leaked out). With the filter installed and clicked in, I get no water flow at all at the water dispenser when I tested it. Removing the filter I get the 15 to 20 second fill rate. I put the Every Drop filter back in and again - no water at the dispenser. After dinner, I tried the dispenser again and water flowed about 4 oz into a glass and then slowed to a drip. I suspect that water is slowly moving through the filter and collecting in the cooling reservoir, I see other comments where it is suggested that the short pin between the water connections be trimmed back about 1/16 inch. I'll try putting in the old filer just as a test before I hack on the new filter.

After the filter was installed at 17:30 on Sunday, I returned to it at 14:20 on Monday and tried the dispenser before taking any other action. Lo and behold I got a solid stream that filled a 13 oz glass in a 10 second count. I ran 48 13 oz glasses and the water flowed solidly for every one. The water is clear and tastes good. Additionally, I could hear the dispenser valve cycle and hear the water "rushing" through the valve. I can't explain it. All my previous experience was with replacing with the PUR filter and I never had a problem with the filter clicking in and water would flow immediately without the flow issue.

I also had a chug chug chug noise coming from my whirlpool ref. Put a folded paper towel at the end, and tried to close the door. Once it was pushed (would pop open though) I could hear the swish of water as the filter seated. Took the paper towel out and everything is perfect.
