My GF just bought a new fridge. When we went to install water line (which she has never used for 20 years), no water comes out of the valve. Do plumbers/contractors ever install a secondary shut off maybe under the house?
Thank you Jeff! Your video was a money and time saver! Our water in the reservoir was frozen. Your video helped us fix it in minutes! Thanks you, again!
What an excellent video! I haven't tackled the project yet but I am now armed with the knowledge that I need. I loved your 5 point presentation describing the possible causes and I just replaced the filter about a month ago so I know that isn't it. I'm guessing the solenoid connection, but I will check the others. Thanks!
After watching this video I used the hair dryer for 3 minutes inside the fridge and the water worked!!! Yea!! Thanks so much as the water has stopped for than once and then came back on...now I know what to do it it happens again! Great video with 5 ideas for why water might not be flowing! Simple FIX!!!
I can't thank you enough! I tested my line just before the door and had no water, but had water through the filter just before the solenoid. Metering the solenoid showed 360 and 180ohms so I pulled the water line and sure enough had water directly out of it. The water line from the back to the front was getting pinched under the fridge! You only get handy, but trying to be and finding mentors along the way. Thank you!
It worked!! Even though the filter was just two months old, replacing it fixed the problem of no water coming through. The explanation was clear and I started instructions in the order given. The simplest one worked. Thank you for your service.
You saved me a service call! My reservoir was frozen after my teenager lowered the temp in the fridge. Five minutes with a heat gun and all was right with the world. Thank you!!!
Although our Kitchenaid Architect II refrigerator is different than the one in your video, your suggestion on how to repair a frozen water dispenser worked wonderfully well! I removed both crisper drawers, then ran my hair dryer over the water tubing (ours was built with an enormous amount of tubing) for a few minutes. I heard the water dispenser click and, sure enough, water came out! I can't thank you enough!
just thought I'd let you know that this video is still useful several years later. I was able to diagnose my problem with your help (frozen filter) and fix it for free!!!! I appreciate you!
After watching this, I realized it could be that the water filter wasn’t put in right. I took it out and put it back in, and voila! The water dispenser is working! Thank you.
Oh wow! Glad to help out another one! Been getting a lot of people reporting the hair dryer trick worked. Too bad our's was a lot more work to do changing the filter head in another video.
I can't believe you actually had me blow-drying my fridge. But I really can't believe it actually worked! Thanks! FYI, my reservoir was inside a little door under my veggie drawers when I pulled them out. And I had a single outlet water valve, so this fixed my water and ice!
Worked for me too! I got out the hair dryer, put it on high, and glided it back and forth across the "hidden" reservoir for less than 3 minutes. The water dispenser immediately worked perfectly again ... on my first try! Thanks for the video and instructions on how to fix. Your solution was not included in the Kithenaid manual.
Jeff, we followed your video instructions and are not screwed! In the end, it was a frozen water line but that issue wasn’t immediately apparent. We took the hair dryer to the door and, with still no water, looked at the water inlet valve. After ordering a new valve on line ($100!) we pushed the fridge back against the wall which I think jostled loose the frozen bits in the line. After getting it back in place we decided to give the water dispenser more Hail Mary press and we had water! Needless to say we are returning the inlet valve once it arrives. Thanks for your video.
I just want to say THANK YOU for helping me fix the problem. We thought it was the Water inlet valve, but yeah still no water after changing it out. We did not however know about the jug thing in the back of the fridge..... Well, that was it. Took my hair dryer to it for less than 3 minutes and bam we had water. Thanks so much for posting this video you're a real life saver. Keep up the great videos.
An added advice is to make sure the temperature of the fridge isn’t above what’s recommended. As well after warming up the water reservoir place a foam , type of insulation, behind the reservoir to prevent it from freezing up again.
My issue were the two white dots. I pushed them in with a pen and received a blast of cold water to the face!! We don’t have a water filter installed so I just put back on the bypass cap and voila. It works again! Thanks for the video
Yes! Thank you for your comment! I first tried the blow dryer and it didn’t work. But I read your comment. So I took a pencil and pushed in the dot and got sprayed in the face too 😂 So right then I knew that there was running water getting to the filtration unit. So I pushed in a second time just to get more in, and then I twisted the filter much more this time. My wife always has an issue with how much I twist things and asked me not to do it again… well… once I twisted it enough I could hear the air release from the filter and knew I was in business! Thank YOU for the comment and thank the man that posted this video for getting me on track!
#3 fixed mine. The water reservoir was frozen and 5 minutes with a hair dryer did the trick. Turns out, someone left my fridge open all night so it must have been cranking cold air over night and froze it. Thanks Jeff!
After checking filter, clogged water line all of which were fine, then I used hair dryer on water reservoir. Bingo!! Now we have water in door!! Thank you soo much!! You were a life saver
Hair dryer is now part of my DIY tool bag - thank you so much!! Frozen reservoir was my problem. I will look for you the next time I have a fix-it issue!!
THANK YOU!!! The fix was either the blow dryer or the two little buttons where the water filter connects. We can now dispense water without the sudden jack hammer noise that alarmed both the dog and us!!
Thank you helping to check register.. My refrigerator has an issue that contact between water filter and water contractor. It somehow doesn’t go all the way in. Great trouble shooting. Thank you again !
YOU ARE THE BEST! Root cause #5 bad filter head . Water was POURING from the water filter like no tomorrow big water damage in less than 20 min 🤦🏻♀️ basement ceiling ruined. Thanks for the great video 👍🏼
We changed our water filter and the water stopped dispensing. Thanks to you, I decided to check the water supply valve and what do you know it was off!! All fixed now for free lol. Haha thanks for the video!
Thanks! Would like to add that my filter head unit was frozen! I removed the filter, heated the head unit for about 30 seconds with hair dryer, then it sprayed water everywhere. Reinstalled filter and BAM it worked. Cheers
Your tips were great but I discovered reason number 6. The filter froze. Fridge was stuffed full and set at 7, the coldest. Hair dryer resolved that too!! Thanks
Thank you for putting the video on here. I had an issue with no water coming out! Used a hair dryer for 5 mins over the water storage unit inside the fridge. Water is working fine now, thank you👌🏻
Thank you. In my case, I was making ice, but not getting water from the front of the frig. At the water dispenser, you could hear the humming when you press the button, but again no water. I'll be replacing the valve assembly soon to resolve this issue.
Jeff, you’re amazing!!! Thank you!! Had no idea the water reservoir (and tubing) was behind the crisper! I was ready to pay a service call, thinking it was something serious!! Thank YOU!!!
Thanks Sir for the good Video...I have the same or very similar fridge my water started freezing then stopped. Items in the fridge are frozen as well an ideas. The filter is almost new..Thanks Rob
Watched your video after speaking with KitchenAid support that were no help. I do usually look for the most common easy solutions first. (ex- is it plugged in?) In my case it was Root Cause # 3 Frozen reservoir. My wife's hair dryer did the trick in under 3 minutes. Thank you so much for the useful tip.
Great to hear! Yes yours is the most common issue that people report solving it with the hair dryer. In our case it was the filter head which is like the worst case scenario to have to fix so you got off lucky
Thanks! This one helped me! Mine was kind of #4. I went to look at the valve and found it had somehow come unplugged. The refrigerator came with the house, and it had never worked. Your video and 30 min of troubleshooting and it was working!
"OL" = Open Loop. (not overload)... It may be interpreted as "Out Of Limits" depending on the test function selected and the meter's design and manufacturer. Sometimes the water line is okay in the water tank inside the refrigerator but it's frozen up inside the freezer door on side-by-sides that dispense from the freezer door on the outside.
Yes Jeff you're a lifesaver I was getting zero water out of my water for my fridge I went on Frigidaire to find a manual when I typed in my model number toasters came up so my biggest problem was those two little plastic tips you have to push in so I took the airline and the wife blew it out I pushed the plastic tips I heated up the inside of the fridge to thaw my water reservoir then I blew backwards through my water reservoir the wife caught all the water then I took a large syringe and I pumped in a couple of syringe's full of vinegar in the line that feeds everything right from my RO machine I don't have a filter because I use an RO machine. You were a lifesaver now my wife and I can quit fighting for a little while.
Awesome, glad to hear you fixed it Bobby! In my fridge, unlucky me it was the expensive and pain in the butt fix. I had to replace the filter head and hose assembly, $65 part.
I completed Step #1 with a new water filter. Step #2 does not seem to apply. Step #3 is in full effect as I type. Hair Dryer on low facing the reservoir. It did seem to be frozen, but what the hell do I know. How does water get frozen in the refrigerator when nothing else gets frozen? I also opened the freezer after dumping all the ice and no ice is being made. So that leads me to Problem #4, the Water Inlet Valve. Great. However, I am going to leave my refrigerator door open for a while and allow it to thaw on its own. So, how does water freeze in that reservoir to begin with? And if no ice is being made, could it still be the water reservoir or does that point directly to the water inlet valve? When I press for water, I hear an actuation trying to give water but no water is dispensed. Is that the prime indicator that water is frozen? Again, how does water get frozen in the line?
Thank you so much for all the info. I was able to fix my fridge and avoid the expensive of a tech. We first checked the water lines in the back which seemed fine. I then replaced my filter thinking it was clogged or just old cuz I'm sure it was overdue. The water was still not dispensing. My daughter had mentioned the soda was frozen this morning so I tried the hairdryer technique and I got some flow but was still not normal. So I pulled the fridge back out and it seems when my husband checked the lines he also kinked the line. We had 2 issues, original issue frozen water reservoir, ours being a coiled line in behind the veggie drawer, and then a kinked hose. Lol Thanks again!
@@jeffostroff I did already. And it worked like charm. I have LG Refrigerator that has two water valves. One is on the back and other on left door at the bottom. I had to replace the one that is on the front door.
Thanks for taking the time to do this, Jeff. Our issue is, indeed, a frozen water reservoir. I did the hair dryer tricks several times and it worked, but it JUST KEEPS FREEZING. No something's cracked inside, so I definitely need to replace the line. I'll check your channel to see if there are any videos addressing that, but it doesn't take care of the constantly freeing reservoir issue. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Make sure nothing is blocking the reservoir, as trapped cold air not circulating will make it freeze. Put a high quality temperature gauge inside the fridge as close as possible to the reservoir to read temperature for an hour or so. You might experiment with raising the temp in the fridge it should be 38 degrees or higher
good video you helped me solve my issue. the two buttons on the water filter connector was my problem. one was stuck, likely mineral or calcium build-up. i used the end of a pen to free the corrosion and they depressed/retracted freely. thanks, Jeff
Jeff, very helpful. We have a GSS25LSTASS GE Side by side. The reservoir was frozen, and the set point was 34F. Adjusted the setpoint to 38F, thawed the reservoir. At the same time, noticed that the solenoid that controlled the ice flap door was rusted. We had observed that when the water or ice button was pushed, the display went blank. Removed the solenoid, verified that it was not open circuit, and then removed the solenoid plunger, sanded it lightly and now we have both water and ice!!! Thanks!
I replaced the filter due to slow flow, then both solenoid valves, still had slow flow. Found the filter inlet was worn out and just deleted the inside filter and bought a good inline filter and placed it behind the fridge. Now I save $20 each time I change the filter AND vacuum out the back of the fridge every 6 months.
I wrote that I couldn’t budge the filter, but I used my hairdryer for about 5 minutes. When it didn’t work, I started revving up to fix the switch. As I was pursuing this, the fridge made some noise (my husband was finally able to get the filter off and changed). We went and tested the water dispenser and voile! It worked. Think it was the hairdryer that did the trick.
Thans Jeff, the water reservoir line was frozen and thr hair dryer worked. My fidge was set to 35 degrees, what would you recommend setting it at as to prevent this from happening again. I have a Viking VCFF036SS
Very informative video, thank you!! Trying to troubleshoot a brand new fridge dispenser, it looks like we're dealing with a bad filter/ push points! Do you think a new fridge can have a bad inlet valve, if everything else looks ok?

good video you helped me solve my issue. the two buttons on the water filter connector was my problem. one was stuck, likely mineral or calcium build-up. i used the end of a pen to free the corrosion and they depressed/retracted freely. thanks, Jeff
Great to hear congrats Ron, and thanks for watching!
Great solution Kobek!
Thank you! I just followed your tips and fixed my dispenser easily with a hair dryer!
Glad I could help! We've had a lot of people respond back they this helped their problem.
Thank you so much! The hairdryer did the trick and we now have water again!
Glad I could help! Wish my own fridge had been that easy, I had to change out the filter head
Thank you, Jeff! The frozen reservoir was my issue and the hairdryer did the trick.
Glad it helped Jacob!
Did you ice maker stop working also? We r having the same problem since yesterday, no water and won't make any ice either..

Thanks for posting this!
Our pleasure!
Why did you replace the valve? It tested good.
Thans Jeff, the water reservoir line was frozen and thr hair dryer worked. My fidge was set to 35 degrees, what would you recommend setting it at as to prevent this from happening again. I have a Viking VCFF036SS
Thank you so much! A frozen water tube inside our fridge was the issue. Hairdryer solved it!!
You're welcome!
Very informative video, thank you!! Trying to troubleshoot a brand new fridge dispenser, it looks like we're dealing with a bad filter/ push points! Do you think a new fridge can have a bad inlet valve, if everything else looks ok?
Thank you for this video!! I have the same model you have. My water reservoir was frozen. Hairdryer did the trick.😃
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
Awesome!!! The hair dryer trick worked like a charm. Thank you!!!
Glad it helped!
Can you tell me why this particular dispenser might be dripping? This is the only video I've found with this particular dispenser. Thank you.
Just replaced mine. I know it would have cost at least $500 for a tech to repair....MUCH APPRECIATED!
Thank you , it was the frozen waterline first video I watched fixed my problem in less then 10 mins
Sweet!
Hair dryer worked beautifully! Thank you.
